Looking for information to help me trace roots of my great grandparents, John McMahon Jr. and Anna Laskey. John McMahon Jr. was born in 1881, and he was adopted by John & Mary McMahon from the New York Foundling Home in New York City. He married Anna Laskey in 1901 in Spring Valley, Illinois.

They had 11 children - all born in Spring Valley, Illinois except I believe the last one. They were Mildred (b. ~ 1902), Raymond (b. ~ 1904), Albert (b. ~ 1905), Phillip (b. ~ 1906), Anne (b. ~ 1908), George (my grandfather, born 1910), Christopher, Christina, twins Antoinette and Edward (b. 1918) and Rita (b. 1925)

Anna Laskey (1881 - 1942) was born in Lithuania and died in Chicago. Her parents were Anton Laskey and Antonia Shiller (not sure about spelling of last name) from Lithuania. My information indicates they were living in Kansas City in 1900.

Any information to help me in my search would be greatly appreciated. I have much more to share if we can make a connection.

Looking for any information to help me trace roots of my great great grandparents, Michael Riley and Bridget Price. My information indicates Michael Riley may have been born ~ 1820 in Ireland.

His three oldest children - Nora, James and Mary - were in England in 1852, 1857 and 1861 respectively (according to U.S. Census records). I'm guessing they left Ireland somehow due to Famine, went to England for ~10 years and then came to the U.S. during the Civil War.

The rest of his children were born in Illinois (presumably Chicago) - Thomas (1863), David (1865), Martin (1868), Margaret (my great grandmother, born in Chicago in 1870) and John (1875).

My information indicates Bridget Price may have been born ~ 1835 in Ireland. She died in 1894.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if we might have a connection. I've been researching Peter McGirl(McGuirl in US)b. 1847 Leitrim, my great great grandfather. Wife was Mary Prior b. 1851. They had 6 children, she died, he remarried and had 6 more children. Most of the 12 children immigrated to the US. My great grandfather, the only child whose name I know for sure, Thomas Francis b. 1873, came to RI about 1892. I have come across an Albert b. 1900, Louise (m. Tyrell) and Gertrude (m. Clark)(They lived next door to my grandfather Peter Francis b.1900 in 1930 in Providence) whom I believe were Thomas Francis's nephew/nieces. Also, an Ann b. Jan 3, 1865, and Maria b. July 23, 1866 were born to Peter McGirl and Mary Prior in Newtown Gore, Leitrim. (This makes Mary only 14 at Ann's birth so I'm not sure if this is them). For your interest there is also listed a Bridget b. March 16, 1866 to Thomas McGirl and Margt. Early in Newtown Gore. I'm also pretty sure that Thomas Francis had a brother named John. I think your younger Thomas is about the right age to perhaps have been a brother of Peter? Do you know if they were from Newtown Gore?

Hi...wonder if we are related somewhere along the line. Our family also comes from Ireland, altho' more in the Dublin and West Meath areas. I wonder if the spelling difference is due to listening to the Irish brogue or if someone changed it to make it a little easier. Drop a line if you have a mind to. Thanks. Deirdre

Thanks for your post. Your Dennis McGuirl from Ireland arrived and lived where? Was it in Rhode Island. I have been tracing a family with a Dennis for a while now and think there might be a connection. Was Ed McGuirl born in Chicago? We have a connection to Illinois in Catherine McGuirl sister to Patrick who married a Miller . She moved there and raised her family there. I have often wondered if the family may have spent some time there before they came to NY because I have not been able to find ther in ny prior to 1870 and I know they were here since about 1863.

Regarding the May McGuirl - I have come to learn that the May McGuirl was commissioned in 1887. I believe that she was named for Patrick McGuirl's wife...my great great grandmother. Would it be possible to get a copy of the picture you have? Please contact me by email directly.

My great grandfather on my mother's side was Edward McGuirl from Chicago. I'm not sure whether or how his family might be related to NY McGuirls. He was born in 1871, and his father, Dennis McGuirl, was from Ireland.

However, years ago my family came across a great picture of the "May McGuirl" ... one of the tug boats of the Shamrock Towing Com ... in a museum exhibit. The picture is so good, we had it enlarged and it hangs in my house. So, I was interested to read your message making this connection.

- Peter Winters

Thomas and Mary (maiden name unknown) McGIRL are my great-great grandparents. I believe they remained in Ireland. Four of their sons emigrated, and lived in Providence, R.I. USA.

Given the normal size of Irish families, I'm inclined to think there were other brothers and/or sisters, perhaps who remained in Ireland, or came to America and lived in other states, and in the case of sisters, married, and had name changes.

Are there any other McGirl/McGurl/McGuirl/McGarlS who were the children of "Thomas and Mary" McGirl?

The sons in R.I. I know are:
Patrick, b. ca 1835; m. Jane Arbuckle
Thomas, b. ca 1841; m. Mary Moffitt (of Fenagh)
John, b. ca 1845; m.
My ggrandfather, Patrick I believe was born in Ire. His son James J. was married to Elizabeth T. Gill. They had 4 children: my grandmother Mary Elizabeth (1904-1975) married to F. Joseph Burke, James P.(1907-1962) married to Margaret Curry, Elizabeth A. (1911-1914) and Robert J. (1915-199?) married to Mildred Guilfoyle. As I told you Patrick was married 3 times and his 3rd wife was a Manning who I understand brought a child/children to that marriage. Let me know if there is a connection. Patrick McGuirl started his towboat and barge business in Verplanck, NY and later moved his family to 51st in NYC then to the Grand Concourse in the Bronx.

He was an emigre from Ireland and settled in Ver Plank, NY on the Hudson River and ran a Tow boat co: Shamrock Towing. He was apparently married 3 times and I believe his 3rd wife was someone by the name of Manning who already had a child with the name of Manning whom she brought to the marriage.
