Do you have any info on Francis J.J. McHugh? Born at/near Maidstone. He immigrated to US (Detroit approx. 1889) Specifically, I'm trying to determine who his parents were. I've seen his birthdate listed as Nov. 1857, but on the 1900 an 1910 census in Detroit I see Nov. 1861.

I couldn't get any definite answers from the 1871 or 1881 Canadian census.

Thanks,
Jon McHugh

Henry’s siblings included: John, Bridget, Fanny, Nell, Mary, William, Anthony, Arthur, Denis, Dorothea and Josephine, all born at Drumnabey, Castlederg between 1840 and 1870. Can anyone help me to trace my ancestors – please?

McHugh-From Sligo to Rhode Island

Anybody have any information about the James McHugh/Mary McGuiness family of Sligo Co., Ireland? They had at least two sons, John L. McHugh born about Jan. 1845-1855 in County Sligo, emigrated to US abt. 1870, and settled in Providence, Rhode Island where he married Maria Flaherty on 20 Feb. 1879; Patrick, born about Apr. 1864, emigrated to US in 1885, and settled in Providence, Rhode Island. Looking to find their origins in County Sligo.

Cousins to Patrick McHugh b. abt. 17 Mar, 1856 in County Sligo, son of Michael and Mary McHugh, who married Catherine Theresa Flaherty on 24 Jun. 1886 in Providence, Rhode Island. This Patrick emigrated to US in 1881 and settled in Providence, Rhode Island.

Believed to be related to the James McHugh/Mary O'Donnell family of Providence RI who had children all born in Providence: Mary A. b. 31 May 1873, John F. b. 12 Aug. 1874, James H. b. 20 Aug. 1875, Michael J. 4 Sept. 1875, Alice b. 13 Jan. 1878, Cecelia A. b. 22 Mar. 1879, and Patrick W. b. 6 Oct. 1882. According to my Dad, the McHugh/O'Donnell line are cousins. It is possible that James may be the older brother of John L. and Patrick McHugh.

If any of these families sounds familiar to you, let's compare notes. I have much more on the McHugh familes living in Providence, Rhode Island. Anyone have any idea where in County Sligo they came from?

Chris - Could be a relationship - but in that era there were a lot of McHugh's in the Roman Catholic (RC) Parish of Magheraculmoney (ancient name Culmaine). So, just to be clear - we are not dealing with a village name but rather a large area referred to as a parish. Although the civil parish name was Magheraculmoney the RC parish of the same name contained only a small part of the civil parish. Most of the RC parish was in the civil parish of Drumkeeran which was to the north of and adjacent to Magheraculmoney.

When asked what parish they were from the Roman Catholic soldiers enlisting likely gave their religious parish. McHugh was a very common name and there were McHughs all throughout the area. John was such a common name that I think we would need something more than we have to establish a coonection between our people.

Two years ago my wife and I went to Ederny, a village which is a short walk from the ancient Church of Ireland (formerly Roman Catholic) parish of Culmaine. We walked throughout the area and saw a number of McHugh graves. There are transcriptions of the graveyards in the area and many McHughs in them - but those with markers would be a very small percentage of the graves which actually contain McHugh remains. The McHugh name in that area was something like the Smith name in parts of Engalnd. It appeared over and over.

As I indicated earlier I would like to correspond with you by email so that we can together pursue more carefully whether we share a common ancestry. Even if we don't we might each learn more about our McHugh families.

Thanks.

Jim McHugh
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada

Hi Chris. Thanks for your detailed reply. My John McHugh was born in Coolminnon (apparently a variation on Culmaine just as your John's Culmoney is) in 1803. Your John, although from Culmoney, was apparently born a couple of decades before my John. They don't seem to be the same person - but could they be related?. When you say Peter's brother John turned up, where did he turn up, in England or Ireland? I would be interested to see what you have on Peter and John from the "military website". Do you mean the British National Archives site or the Find My Past website? I have my John McHugh's wo97. I would like to discuss this further and send you the wo97 but would like to do so by email. Although Roman Catholic in Canada my John McHugh may have been baptized in a protestant church (Culmaine) in Ireland. My email address is jimmmchugh@shaw.ca.

Thanks.

Jim

Hi Margaret ...

Yes there certainly are a lot of Ryans - mostly Johns, Williams and Patricks which makes my search interesting.

I don't know where the McHughs came from - I never got that far. I only know of Catherine's name as I have Williams Death Certificate.

My mothers maiden name is Ryan. For whatever reason she doesn't know the whereabouts of (or what happened to) cousins, aunts or uncles. She knew them as a child but lost contact with them long ago.

Thank you ... my little twig Georgia is 7mths.

I was going to send you an email but as my membership has expired it seems I can only communicate via this board.

Cheers,
Katherine.

So nice to meet you Katherine. A cousin has done a lot of research into the ryan family. We here in Australia have Ryans coming out of our ears. Mum's grandmother was a Ryan and her paternal grandmother was a Ryan that is where the McHughs come in. Congrats on your new little twig on the tree. We will be in touch soon. I am away for a few days and I will let you know all the info Chris my cousin has in a family history she has painstakingly written. Was it Doon or Doone where your McHughs came from. Cheerio Margaret.

I notice a message re above. My ggrandmother was the daughter of John Ryan and Catherine McHugh. She was Margaret Ryan born 1842 in Tipperary Ireland. No birth certificate has as yet been found for her. Her father John Ryan was a farmer. She had 2 brothers at least - She married James Lysaght possibly Limerick - and when he died she came to Australia and married Michael Burke. They are my ggrandparents.

So, researching my family shield I actually came across two different shields, both with "McHugh" as their original name or some variation of Son of Hugh (or Aodh). Anyway, below are the links for the two different shields. One with the red hand of Ulster on top, and the other with a yellow lion on a green shield. Can anyone explain to me the difference between the shields? I'm so confused as to why there are two...

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.heraldry.ws/g...

http://www.google.com/imgres?q=MChugh+family+crest&hl=en...

Looking for the family of William and Margaretta McHugh, of Phila. Pa. They had 3 children, Helen, called Nellie, born 1897 Anastasia, called Annie, born 1899 and John born 1903. I am interested in the middle child, Anastasia, as she was my grandmother, and due to TB was taken from her home to a Sanitorium and never returned. Her husband died young, leaving 2 daughters who had no idea where their mother died or was buried. A huge family mystery, and we would appreciate any info. Anastasia was married to Clarence A. Lees, had 2 sets of twin girls [ 1 of each se died young] and they lived on Osage Ave. in West Phila. Thank you.

John McHugh married my great aunt, Elizabeth Norris. They were married for more than 50 years. When Elizabeth died, John lived on for many years in the northern suburbs of Chicago in a retirement home, cared for by my aunt's family. Upon his death, he was interred beside his wife, Elizabeth. However, before any of my family could clean his room at the home, it was reported that his niece from WI came and took his personal belongings home with her. Unfortunately, much of what she took was our family history, in the form of pictures and mementos kept by my g-aunt over the 90 years of her life.

If by some miracle, anyone out there comes across anything containing the names Elizabeth McHugh, Elizabeth Norris, Ethel Norton, Mary, Patsy, Betty, Nancy or Rita Norton, or Mary Crowder please contact me asap. I can't tell you what this would mean to my family and our research. Aunt Elizabeth was the family historian, by way of her squirrel-ing talents. Shortly before she died, she gave me a lock of hair from my first haircut ...

This is probably no more than a coincidence, but I will pass
it on anyway just in case. While trying to track an ancestor of my wifes, one Arthur Reed who emigrated to Montreal about 1900, I came across the fact that on 26th June 1931 a Thomas Mc.Hugh was hung for murder in Montreal.
He had killed an Arthur Reed during the course of a robbery.
Probably no connection at all,but there can't have been too
many Thomas Mc.Hughs in Montreal, especially given the
prevalence of French names.

Hi I have a Patrick McHugh in West Derby Liverpool on the 1891 UK census.from Roscomon, Ireland. DoB abt 1861. He married an Emily Peters (but I can't find the marriage) and the result was my Grandmother Mary Jane McHugh and my Great aunt Agnes Emily McHugh.

Would anybody have these names in their ancestry tree?

Dominic McHugh county Roscommon, Ireland

I am hitting a huge road block and looking for some help. I have my Paternal G-G-grandmother Brigid (bridget) McHugh, born apr. 1840 in County Roscommon. Bridget McHugh marries John Kelly in 1857, Co. Roscommon (maybe Strokestown area). John and Bridget have 7 children before her death prior to 1901.
I have found a birth record for Bridget with parents Dominici (Dominick) McHugh and Mariae (Mary) Owens. I also found a birth record for PATRICK McHugh (1839)I cannot locate Dominick on the griffiths valuation nor any census. I am looking for anyone who might have a connection. I have absolute confirmation that Bridget McHugh and her husband John KELLY remained in county Roscommon, specifically CAMLA/CAMLAGH townland.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
