William H McInnis, b1851 NY, d1902 NV - Sheriff Washoe County, NV

William H. McInnis (W. H. McInnis) was born in 1851 in Monroe County, NY, according to his obituary. There were family rumors he may have been born in Canada. Canandaigua, Ontario County, NY is near Monroe County, so I thought if not Canada, maybe there. There are tons of McInnis (various spellings) from Canada. I just cannot find this particular William.

I find him in Nevada, California by the mid to late 1870's. He married into the well-known Jamison family (From PA). He and Jessie J. Jamison married Jan 1888 in Reno, Washoe Country, NV.

In 1900 he was elected County Sheriff. He was president of the local Wheelman's Club. An injury sustained from a fall during a race became infected and he died from blood poisoning Aug 1902. There are records that say 1903.

According to the 1900 census, his father was from NY, his mother was from Ireland.

I can find several William McInnis (MacGinnis/McGinnes/MaGinnis/etc) in the census records, born around 1851, many in and around NY.

However, I cannot find records that connect to him with any certainty. I can't even follow any sibings from the census family possibilites far enough to find him in a round-a-bout manner.

And, though the NV newspapers loved to share gossip, there is nothing about William or his family.

This man was relatively visible in the community. I have all of the records of his descendants. I just cannot find any parentage or siblings.

Does he sound familiar to anyone out there?

Hi GeorgetteL! I am very excited to see the same information from someone! I am the great granddaughter (I know the username is Larry, I use my grandfather's account here) of Harold McKinnis, son of Roy McKinnis, son of George Allen McKinnis, son of David McKinnis (m. Louisa), who is the son of the same Alexander McKinnis you are mentioning! I have found census records of an Alexander Mckinnis in Smith, TN in the 1830s, and I know he married Delaney Gregory, who was born in Chatham County, NC (I actually live in Chatham Co, and our house is probably right on Delaney's father's land from the 1700s!) I would love to talk more on this subject! Thanks! me email is elefriend@me.com

Their children were Fred, John Alexander, Annie S., Ernest "Vincent", Loretta, Dorothy Mae, William and Allan (JR). Annie died sometime between 1915 and 1920. Family was seperated after her death. If you have a connection to this McInnis family, please contact me. Annie Callahan was a sister to my grandfather, John Francis Callaghan from Dromore, PEI.

Allan and Susan Ann's first born, Frederick Francis McInnis, was my grandfather, though he died of TB in Ticonderoga, NY when my mother was a child. His dates: 7/2/1902 - 8/19/1930.
He married Gertrude Mary Sanders at Fort Ann, NY 1/8/24.
They had several children; at least two are alive: my mother Gertrude who is 85 and in a nursing home, and Mary, who is a nun in Ohio. There are links at Ancestry.com that provide at least two generations further back for both Allan and Susan Ann.
Hope that helps.

Re: Mc/MacInnis' line in NovaScotia

Hi Joslyn. I don't have the surname on my direct family-tree, but I like to try to find out about the siblings of my ancestors. This is an old posting of mine where I mention the sister of my great-grandfather. I wasn't able to find out whether William McINNIS / McINNES came down from Nova Scotia or the Prov. of Ontario. See below.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

FYI:

Hello. I just checked the archives of this Board, and it seems I haven't posted about my gr-grandfather's sister before. Since I don't have any additional information from 2004, I hope you don't mind if I copy/paste a query from then - here:

Hello,

After many attempts at trying to find this couple over the past 6 months, I
think I finally found my great-grandfather's younger sister living in
Somerville in 1900, 1910, and 1920.

My great-grandfather, William KERR, came down from Quebec Province around
1872-1875. He is found in the 1880 Census with his wife, Elizabeth
(HANNAH). Also in the household was their first two children, William and
Louise, and his sister, Mary Ann KERR. At that time they were living in
Everett.

William KERR had married Elizabeth HANNAH in 1876 in Malden.

Because Mary Ann KERR was listed in the household in 1880, I had "guessed"
that she had made the trip from Quebec to Boston with her brother. But,
if I have found the correct couple (below), Mary Ann came down to Boston in
1879.

I had known from my mother's notes that Mary Ann had married William
McINNES, but I had no idea what the spelling of his name was. Today I
decided to try this spelling, and I think I found them:

1900 Somerville, MA
William McINNES, 45, b6/1865, m.18yrs, bCAN/ENG, mig. 1880, Carpenter
Mary A. McINNES, 42, b7/1857, m.18yrs., bCAN/ENG, mig. 1880
Mabel, 15, daughter, b. 11/1884, b MA ..

1910 Somerville, MA
William McINNES, 58, m.27yrs
Mary McINNES, 53, m.27yrs, one child

1920 Somerville, MA
William McINNES, 67, mig. 1878, carpenter, chemical company
Mary McINNES, 61, mig. 1879

...
I had thought that they had had two daughters, but only one is mentioned.
...
I checked the LDS web site for a possible match-up for a William McINNES
born around 1865, and I came up with a William McINNIS living with his
family in Perth, Ontario, in the 1881 Census. He was 15 at the time.

FYI: The KERR's in Argenteuil County, Quebec, in the 1800's, might have
had a close relative, Dawson KERR, who moved to Perth, Ontario, in
mid-1800's.

(Another possibility is a William McINNES in Halifax, NS, in the 1881
Census. He was living with his family, and was 29, which puts his birth
year at ~1852. But, he was listed as a "house joiner," which I think is a
carpenter. Another clue is that his family was listed as Wesleyan
Methodist, and the KERR's were of the same religion.)

(However, William stated that he migrated either in 1878 to 1880 which means
he could not have shown up in the 1881 Canadian Census.)

..Just wondering if anyone knows anything about this couple. William
McINNES seems to have married Mary Ann KERR around 1882-1883, probably in
Everett, Malden, or Somerville.

William and Elizabeth (HANNAH) KERR and William and Mary (KERR) McINNIS remained living in cities bordering on Boston, MA, until their passings.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

If anyone is looking for a Mc/MacInnis line that goes from Scotland to NovaScotia to CapeBreton try looking in a book called "The MacKenzies History of Christmas Island Parrish" written by Archibald J. MacKenzie(revised edition by his son Archibald A. MacKenzie). This book(found at the library) helped me sort out the correct lines and also gave me info I didn't have. P.S.-There are a few other names for anyone who has ancestors from that area. Good Luck Joslyn

McINNIS: Prince Edward Island, Canada/Massachusetts, USA

If there is anyone out there that has been researching the McInnis/Callaghan connection, I sure would love to hear from you. Interested in Allan James McInnis who married Susan Ann Callaghan in Charlottetown, PEI about 1900. Both bride and groom were from Lot 37. Newlyweds relocated to Quincy, MA where their first child was born. 1910 census had Allan/Annie and 4 children living in Winthrop. Susan Ann Callahan McInnis died before 1920. Lost track of family. Susan Ann Callahan McInnis is my grand aunt and would love to hear from anyone who may have some information regarding this family. Any assistance you can give would be much appreciated. Thanks

What part of the country was this? My Alexander McInnis was born in Scotland, 1852. I know he lived in Georgia and Florida. There were rumours he may have also lived in MA, USA. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1873. I also had heard he went to Canada first from Scotland then came to the States.

Matthew Lindsay

I am doing some research for a friend. He knows little about his grandmother, Etta (McInnis) St.Amour Allen. I found the border crossing info for Etta. She entered 12-7-1922 at age 21. Her last permanent residence was Morell, PEI and her brother's name was Ira (who stayed). She was headed for her sister Mrs. Joesph Flynn's house in Lynn, Mass.
Etta married Joseph St.Amour shortly after arriving. He was born about 1886 in NH. I don't know much about him either. The family ended up in Exeter, NH. Supposedly Etta was afraid of being sent back so didn't talk about her family in Canada.
If anyone has any info about this line I'd appreciate hearing it!

Unfortunately I don't know the answers to any of your questions. I have no death date for Sarah Weathers McKinney in my files so perhaps there is no confirmed death date.

As far as the name goes I do know there were no set spellings until sometime in the 1800s so a man might spell his own name differently from one time to another. I have a copy of a deed where one man's name was spelled 3 different ways in the same document.

Thank you for posting the estate distribution information and where the document can be found!

I was wondering if Sarah (Weathers) McKinney perhaps died much before the 1819 date given for her death. There is apparently no specific information concerning this. And Donald/Daniel McInnish/McKinney m2 to an unknown woman.

There is ten years between the births of James Madison McKinney in 1791 and the next child, Sarah, in 1801.

On another note: do you know if the link between Donald McInnish and Daniel McKinney is well documented? Were they really one and the same man? If not this Daniel, then his father? What is the proof?
According to the final settlement of Daniel McKinney's estate he did indeed have descendants by the names of Sarah or Sally Horn and Nancy Crowder. BUT like you said they could not have been daughters of Sarah Weathers with those birth dates. Perhaps someone is mistaken about the birth dates or perhaps they could have been adopted daughters? I too will be interested to know how they fit.

Note: Final settlement of estate: ...... Cash distributions were ordered paid to William McKinny, Rebecah Julan, Jesse McKinny, Seth McKinny, Sally Horn, Nancy Crowder, James McKinny, and the heirs of John McKinney deceased.
McInnish / McKinney in North Carolina

I know that online sources of genealogical information can often be filled with errors. I am interested in the family below. The 'information' is NOT documented and not from primary sources!

Children of Donald McInnish (b. 15 Sep 1742 in Surry Co., VA – d. 6 Jan 1837 in Monroe Co., MS) & Sarah Weathers (b. 1 Dec 1747 in Sussex Co., VA – d. ca 1819 Rutherford Co., NC)

Sarah would have died at age 77 yo and Donald at 95 yo. Unless Sarah was an amazing biological entity her child-bearing years likely ended by the time she was 45 yo or about 1795. Therefore, Sarah #8 and Nancy #9 were not likely her children.

1. William McKinney (b. 6 May 1766 Sussex County, Virginia) m. Amy Susanna Dugger
2. Julia Rebecca McKinney (b. 9 Aug 1769 in Sussex County, Virginia) m. George Julian
3. Jessie McKinney (b. 24 Jan 1773 in Sussex County, Virginia) m1 Elizabeth Masters; m2 Mary Ann Smith; m3 Ruth Missing
4. John W. McKinney (b. 9 Feb 1776 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina) m. Nancy Horn
5. Mary / Polly McKinney (b. ca 1780 Franklin County, North Carolina) m. Archibald Murphy
6. Seth Marshall McKinney (b. ca 1780 Mecklenburg County, North Carolina) m1 Elizabeth [unknown]; m2 Jane Merchant
7. James Madison McKinney (b. ca 1791 in Franklin County, North Carolina) m. Susan Ellen Sheppart
8. Sarah McKinney (b. 28 May 1801 in Franklin County, North Carolina) m. Richard Horn
9. Nancy McKinney (b. ca 1814 Franklin County, North Carolina) m. William Crowder

I would be interested in any corrections or additions to the ‘information’ above!
The McInnis and Ross families sailed from The Isle of Skye. The original plan was to sail to Cape Breton with a group led by Alexander Beaton but actually sailed on a different ship to PEI. They settled in Lot 67 in 1831.See letter to Honorable Charles Grant M.P. London 15th June 1830. See also The Strathalbyn Jubilee, 1845-1895 for families in Lot 67. Most were from Skye. I'm researching Murdoch and Effie MacLeod. Would appreciate any help. I.G.

I have been working on a surname study of McInnis, focusing on those families who spent some time in the Cape Fear River area of North Carolina before moving on. Whereas there is a lot of information on my site, there still is a lot yet to be done and it is a constantly changing story as new data comes to my attention. Numerous individuals who have McInnis family lines have been contributing what they know about their family. So far, we have been able to make connnections that were previously unknown , but also to undo some previously held beliefs that are not so. It takes some getting acquainted with how to move around on WorldConnect but I encourage all who do have McInnis ( of various spellings) roots to explore the site and make additions and corrections as appropriate. The site is Http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/~ncmcinnis. I can be contacted at mcinnis4@bellsouth.net. Jackie McInnis

Seems I need to look a little harder for my family book, if I'm not mistaken it has more "true" info than anything else I have come across. After all it was handed down by the family.
Be patient, I will let everyone know when I find it. I know my brother also has a copy somewhere.
