William McKay & Nancy McLeod, Truro, Colchester N.S. 1800's

I'm looking for more info on William McKay and his wife Nancy McLeod. They are the parents of the Canadian politician Thomas McKay (8 Jan 1839 – 13 Jan 1912). Most of their children, including Thomas, were born in Pictou County, Nova Scotia, and most lived their lives around Truro, Colchester, N.S.

William McKay emigrated from Sutherland, Scotland, though I'm not sure of the date. He was born around 1810. Nancy was born around 1815, and was born in Nova Scotia. I do not have their parents names, nor any info from their marriage certificate (if one exists).

There are so many McKays and McLeods in those areas in the 1800's, and I'm having a hard time tracking down the two I'm looking for. Any help would be appreciated!

I'm looking for any information on or a connection to Jonathan McKay. He was born in either Michigan or Canada about 1858. He married Marie Crutchfield in Huron County, MI on 14 June 1885. They had 8 children, and moved to Arenac County between 1903-1910. I am not sure when John died. I can't find a death date anywhere, but he is in the 1930 census. Hope someone recognizes some of the names!

Oh their 8 children were:
George
Gilbert
Lillian
Charles
Edna
John
Alice
Ida

Hi, Michael. Did you ever get anywhere? I want to try using the 1940 census, but I don't know what street they lived on. In 1952 I remember walking from their apt across an arched bridge onto an island in the Lake of the Isles. If we knew their street address, then maybe we could find them. Also, several years ago I spoke with a McKay whose family had come in through Price Edward Island in Canada, but his source never replied to my inquiry. Hi to all! Eleanor

I am a descendant of Samuel David McCoy, son of Elijah Albert McKay. Samuel David died in 1935. The McKay name changed in the 1800's as far as I can tell. They left SC and moved to MS where they stayed until the 1900's when they began to spread away from farming into other ventures. My mother and several of her sisters were nurses. The ancestors of my grandfather came from Scotland. Samuel and his wife, Marion Bond, were born about 1735 but we have been unable to find out where in Scotland or who their parents were. Any information you might have would be interesting.

My ggg grandmother was Esther McKay, married to Patrick McCaw. Their son, also Patrick McCaw, was born in Ballycastle, County Antrim in 1836.

The son Patrick McCaw emigrated to the US about 1855. He was in Brooklyn NY by 1862 and lived there until death. In Brooklyn, he lived next door to Alexander McKay who, I think, was his double cousin. Alexander McKay's parents were Alexander McKay and Catherine McCaw.

If any of this sounds familiar, I'd be glad to hear from you.

We have no family history for the Goss side of our family & would love to start our family tree with them included. Christy was born in 1884 so I am guessing Henry (?) was around that age as well. Would love any info that anyone might have. Thx
Hannah Crume McKay

I am trying to solve a family mystery.

On April 4, 1853 William McKay married Hannah Crume in Decatur County, Indiana. She was the daughter of William (Billy) Crume and Rebecca Ann Frakes, living in Clinton in 1850.
In the 1860 US census, William and Hannah were living in Adams Township, Decatur County with their son Adolphus, age 4.

My aunt told me that Hannah was a courier during the Civil War, delivering her messages by horseback. One night her horse shied and threw her to the ground. Her baby was born prematurely and was so tiny
she was not expected to live, so tiny that she could fit into a cigar box. They wrapped her in
blankets and kept her warm on the oven door. She survived but she was always very tiny so she was called “Little Grandma.” Her name was Millie Rebecca McKay, born March 31, 1862 in Decatur.

On August 18, 1863 William married Eliza Jane Pope in Decatur. In the 1870 US census, they are living in Sefton, Fayette county, Illinois with Adolphus, age 14; two young McKay children and three Pope children. Millie is living with her maternal grandmother Rebecca Crume in the same town. She is also with her grandmother in the 1880 census.

I cannot find any trace of Hannah McKay after the birth of Millie in 1862. Did she die soon after the accident or were she and William divorced? I have been searching Indiana death records but no luck in finding her. What happened to Hannah?

Thanks so much!! I do so hope to find what the true facts are. I don't believe I mentioned to you that my Mother is 4 months away from her 96th birthday and it would be so good to be able to give information to her about her ancestry. I will be sure to keep you apprised of any new information I obtain. Within the next couple of weeks I have plans to visit Amite, Ms where Samuel and part of his family went to live. Most of my ancestors settled in Clay County Alabama after South Carolina and perhaps North Carolina. Good luck to you.

I have just found some new information that leads me away from Elijah and to a Thomas Mackie (m. Rosannah McIntyre) from Ceres, Fife, Scotland. I have just litterally stumbled across this information, so I've yet to give it the research it requires. I retrieved the info of Elijah from other member's trees, but I've not found any supporting evidence (birth, marriage, death certs or census records). Once I give this a more thorough search, I will gladly share with you the information that I get! It does appear that Samuel had two brothers (John and William) that travelled with him as well as his father, Thomas from Ireland to the states. If this is true, possible parents for Thomas are John Mackie and Mary Pitcairn (both of Ceres, Fife, Scotland). I will post more info once I have it. If you should gain any info from this and are able to peice more together, please leave a comment and share with me as well!

I too have researched the Elijah and Samuel McKay topic even to a visit to Scotland and conversation with a Professional Genealogist who told me Elijah is not a Scottish name. He suggested that it could well be an assumed name when our ancestor came to this country. I read one account of Samuel McKay which said that he, his brother and probably his father sailed from Scotland to North Carolina, sailing up the Cape Fear River and settled in the vicinity of Craven County about 1745-1750. I have found no ship with their names on the manifest at this time. I believe you have exceeded my research by finding the name of Marion Bond and would like very much to learn more about her. Thank you in advance.

YOUNGSTOWN – Lewis Frank McKay, 87, was gently lifted into the arms of the waiting angels as loved ones celebrated his arrival on Saturday afternoon from Omni Manor Nursing Home.

Lewis was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Sharon, Ohio, the son of LeRoy Heath and Mary Elizabeth (Clark) McKay.

He was a custodian with the Akron Canton Airport for 10 years, retiring in 1978.
Prior to that, he also worked with his father in “Mack” truck sales and had also worked for Lessimore Gas Station on Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown, Ohio.

Lewis was a founding member of the Highway Tabernacle Church from its beginnings on Hillman Avenue in Youngstown to its present day location on Raccoon Road in Austintown. He made regular visits to Omni Manor as a member of Highway Tabernacle to minister to the needs of the residents there. Even after he couldn’t drive, he rode his bicycle for visitation purposes to residents across Mahoning County.

His wife, the former Ruth Lanterman, whom he married Dec. 21, 1946, went home to be with the Lord on May 8, 1980.

Lewis leaves two daughters, Patricia (Christopher) Macres of Austintown, OH and Linda (Thomas) Smith of Youngstown; three grandchildren; one honorary grandchild; five great-grandchildren; and one honorary great-grandchild.

Beside his wife and parents, Lewis was preceded in death by one brother, Robert McKay.

Family and friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at the Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, where services will be held at noon on Wednesday.

Family and friends may visit www.lanefuneralhomes.com
I show that Samuel was born about 1734 in Scotland and Died May 23, 1817. I also show Elijah McKay was born in 1700 in Scotland and died in 1734 in USA with Marion Bond being his wife. Unfortunately my dates of birth and death are the sam for Elijah and Marion. I cannot go any further. I would really like to know where Samuel and Elijah came from. What part of Scotland did they live in? Who were Elijah's parents? Does anyone have any more information?

Re: Lucinda Bell Mckay Ancestors -- Martha? Nicholas Co Ky

Hi! My name is John D. Columbia. I have been researching my family history for about two years now. My great-great-great-great grandmother would have been Mrs. Lucinda Ellen Bell McKay. I too have tried looking for information on her. Her husband's name wasn't Martha. It was Nathan or Nathaniel. Lucinda had five daughters, Mrs. Lydia Taylor McKay Blount (my great-great-great grandmother), Miss Margaret McKay, Mrs. Laura McKay Wilson, Miss Gertrude McKay, and Mrs. Louisa Jane McKay Highlander. All of these women died in Kentucky near or around Bourbon and Nicholas Counties. I know of the Ms. Gertrude McKay because I called the Carlisle Cemetery in Carlisle, KY asking for information on the McKay's. Lucinda, Gertrude, Louisa, Laura, and possibly Margaret are all buried there. Lucinda, Laura, and Gertrude are buried in a plot together. Louisa is buried with her husband. Also, Lucinda had a son, John William McKay whom is also buried there. I strongly believe that Lucinda was born in Nicholas County. I say this because on all death records it either lists her birth place as "Nicholas County, Ky" or "Ky". I have seen multiple things for Nathan; such as he was born in Missouri or Georgia or somebody just doesn't know. Lucinda Ellen Mckay died in 1918. Maggie McKay was the informant on her death record, but did not know of her parents names. I had thought that Mrs. Lucinda was dead because two of her daughters were living with their elder sister in 1900. I have failed to find a census record for the family. The birth order goes: John, Laura, Lydia, Margaret, and Louisa. Gerturde fits in there somewhere. Records from the Carlisle Cemetery state that she died in 1910; therefore we cannot access her death record. You may e-mail me at : amerigo.grant1@gmail.com if you would like to coorespond with me.

Thanks,

John

Just a long shot... My grandfather, John McKay, lived in the Rathfriland area in the late 1800s but spent much of his working life in Newcastle on Tyne. All that I know of him is that he was a magistrate, was married twice and widowed once. He had six children by his first wife, Gertrude(?) and three sons, Daniel, Terence and Charles by my grandmother, Alice Greenan. Charles was my father. John built a house, Cabra Towers, near Rathfriland. He died in 1922 and is buried in Jesmond, Northumbria. The family became dispersed after the war; my grandmother settled in Waterford where she bought the Munster Hotel. I would be grateful to hear any more information and overjoyed to discover some cousins.

Kathryn, I am a descendent of Samuel McKay. My name is Amy McKay Short. My ancestry is as follows: Samuel McKay, Jesse McKay, Samuel P. McKay, Samuel Jasper McKay, Jonathon "Jonah" McKay, William Jasper McKay, Alva John McKay, Wallace Eugene McKay, Denny Lynn McKay and then myself. Would you happen to have any information regarding Samuel's father Elijah? Or would you happen to know Samuel's mother's name? I have found a "Father" McKay as being Elijah's father, but I'm at a dead end and would love any information you could share. I live just north of Ft. Worth, but I lived near St. Louis, MO for 32 years before moving here. Most of the McKays that are related to me are in northern AR, central and southern MO and western IL.
