William McKenna Co. Monaghan Ireland to Scotland

Looking for information about William McKenna b about 1835 in Co. Monaghan Ireland and his wife Ellen Duffy b about 1840, possibly Co. Fermanagh. William and Ellen were married in Ballybay, Co. Monaghan on May 27th 1862. Both were residents of Caddah at the time. The witnesses at the marriage were Thomas Smith and Catherine McArdle.
By May 1865, William and Ellen were living in Edinburgh, Scotland where their second daughter Mary was born. Their first daughter was Catherine. In September 1865, the McKenna family sailed for South Australia aboard the Lincoln.
I'd like to find anything about William and Ellen's parents and siblings.
Thank you,
Heather.

My great grandfather Bernard McKenna (30 Nov 1835 - 10 Feb 1911) married Ellen Kelly in Old St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco 28 Dec 1865. They had a total of 10 children and they moved to NYC where they died and are burried.

Which one of Bernard and Ellen's children are you decenced from?

I have records of many of the decendents but I have been unable to trace our roots to a specific town or county in Ireland. Our family thinks that Bernard came from county Kerry but I have no proof of that.

Let me know what info you want. I'm currently in NJ. Where are you?
Tom Guldner

Thank you for your reply, Lorraine. My Francis McKenna is somewhat of a mystery. Though there is some solid evidence he was born in Armagh, his death certificate records his birth in Philadelphia, USA. Somehow he ended up in Australia marrying Rosina Holder in 1874 in Goondiwindi (Queensland). Their daughter Robina Agnes McKenna was my grandmother.

I think you will agree there doesn't seem to be any possible connection with your Francis McKenna.

Best wishes,
Geo.

Hehehhe yeah John its a maze i'm finding also.
I dunno wot the answer is, i keep thinking one big family tree somehow - for instance a few trees joined up via real connections - into like a family hedge i think.
And that might be a master tree r summat like that
But its very hard when we all split between diff softwares, diff websites we use, etc etc, and how these sites and programs make everything harder if u dont have the money to go full version! But hey this is where we are right now and i ask u to perservere - only today i received contact from a distant relative thanks soley to this message board. And i'm not paid up member. Contact me if u can - and if not reply here and i'll perhaps stick my email up here for hour or two for to establish contact, then i'll take it down agin.
I'll let u view my online tree to see if any use to u.
I have in my ancestry mckena - Franks, Attys, PackyJonnys, and another branch no nickname - from glencordial omagh
Plus i know plenty of nicknamed families up in mckenna country
I'm 20 miles from our ancient hillforts

Well I'm still in early stages of my research - ie
From gathering family info I then:
Used irish census 1901 and 1911 (free to use)
LDS Family Search (free also)
and Griffiths valuation on as about ireland w/site (free)

Also am using free ver MyHeritage software to collate everything. Only now i've started going to relevant parish offices to look at originals.

I've yet to study all my extended ancestors who emigrated as i'm still able to keep going back 1st of all through parish records.

But i'm sure i'll hit a wall or 2 - then my plan to see if i can trace all who left ireland.

I'll prob have to start paying to see American records ie i'm still on free ver here too.

So in summing up - i'm still exhausting all free ways of conducting my research but i'll see where it leads.

I'll keep checking back here for messages but for now here is my email address - contact me with yours and ill invite you to my online tree (MyHeriageSite)

(taken my email address back down)securitysecuritylol

you never know u might see someone - i've about 220 people recorded so far.

But check out free griffiths if not already done so - extremely powerful - able to pinpoint the long buried rubble of ancestors houses - kind of cool

Hi Geo

I'm not sure. my great grandfather was Francis Mckenna born in Glasgow,Scotland in 1874 he married an Esther Heslop from Whitworth, England. Francis' father was also francis mckenna and he married a catharine but i cant make out her maiden name on scotlands people. They were married in Glasgow area of Scotlandin 1872 but there is also reference to Ireland in 1871 (marriage ) not sure if they had to take their vows again with being in a different country. I have a John Mckenna born Ireland as the father catharines father a Colin???? I am not sure that I hawe the right family but my uncle states that Francis Mckenna was born in Rose Street, Govan,Glasgow as stated on his baptism record. Tere were rumours going around that a member of the family went on the run from the police after killing a man for putting a knife to a prostitutes throat but it could be a very tall tale as my grandmother god bless her soul told many as I grew up! Francis born in 1874 came to England after his brother John died after a big mining disaster in lanarkshire. They live in Newcastle Upon Tyne. Mckenna men seemed to like to marry much younger ladies back then. If you think there could be match please let me know as I have been trying to research this family for about six years with not much joy.

Best wishes
Lorraine

Good thing me and the holy father could read Latin. ;> Now, the Archdiosise grabbed all the books to one central location. Just a matter of time before they start charging. But for now it's free.

McKINNEY --> McKENNA from Scotland

I am trying to trace my McKenna family and am currently trying to tie into a particular family. I think they started out as McKinney from Scotland and then for some unknown reason their children started going by McKenna (I think). My grandmother made mention to a name change in her husbands family but no one knows for sure. What I have found so far is below.

According to the 1870 Census

Wm Mckinney [Scotland] 55 [1815] Labor
Mary Mckinney [Scotland] 50 [1820]
**John Mckinney [Scotland 1850 census]	29 [1841]
Jennie Mckinney [Canada] 26 [1844] Millines
Margaret Mckinney [OH] 24 [1846]
Mary Mckinney [Penn.] 22 [1848] Chemical
**Elizabeth Mckinney [OH 1850 Census] 21 [1849]
Samuel Mckinney [OH] 17 [1853] Blacksmith
Willie Mckinney [IN] 12 [1858]
Harry Mckinney [KY] 9 [1861]

** I think that Harry might be my 3rd Great Grandfather.

Later I have found KY death certificates for a John McKenna born 1840, Jeannette born 1842 and Margaret born 1845. All with the mother’s name of Marry Harris born in Scotland, but I’m not sure if that is her maiden name. I am unable to find anybody else in the family so I’m not entirely sure if my name switch theory is entirely correct. If anyone could give me any leads I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!
I am searching for Patrick McKenna who was born in Ireland in Nov 1840. He immigrated to the US in 1868 and family lore says he came with 2 sisters who then immigrated to Canada. In 1900 he was living in Pittsburgh PA with his wife-Catherine McCaffrey (who was born in PA). No one knows where Patrick came from in Ireland and Ireland is FULL of Patrick McKennas! Any hints on how to narrow him down? I have never found a middle name for him. He named his first born son "Patrick Vincent".

Hi and thanks for the quick response!

I'm interested in after 1880, if that helps to narrow it down.

I've been digging on www.familysearch.org, without much success, so I suspect there may be more on the CDs. I've had good success on my Hughes and Holleran lines, but not my Donnelly line.

If you can screenprint to an image or PDF, I'll be happy to give you an email address, to save your having to transcribe.

I have not been able to determine any siblings/parents for my great-grandfather, so I'm looking for a common link.

Thanks,

Ann

Hi Ann. There are over 60 Donnelly/Donnolly marriages in Newark and about 25 in Hudson County, all between 1844-1902.

If you could be more specific on either time frame or names, I can get the info to you sooner. Otherwise, it'll take me a little while to transcribe it.

I've been told most of these are on FamilySearch.org now but I don't know for sure about that.

Re: Charles McKenna - Scotland

I have five Charles McKenna's that I have been mixed up on for a long time. Several others have also have them mixed together. To try and straighten out this mess, this is what I have gleaned from census, birth and marriage records.

1) Charles McKenna, born 9 Feb 1856, Ayr, Ayr, Scotland, son of Michael McKenna/McKinna/McKinnon and Ann McCartney, had a twin sister born on 8 Feb 1856.

2) Charles McKenna, born Feb 1857, Scotland, imigrated to U.S. 1884, married to Isabella in 1897. Isabella was born June 1855 in Scotland. Lived in Pawtucket, Providence, Rhode Island in 1900.

3)Charles Joseph McKenna, born May 1855, Scotland. Son of John McKenna and Margaret White/Whyte. Married Elizabeth McKenna on 7 May 1875 in Kilmarnock, Ayr, Scotland. Elizabeth was the daughter of James McKenna and Catherine Morgan. Elizabeth was born Aug 1856 in Scotland. Charles and Elizabeth's children were James, Catherine, John, charles, Margaret and Thomas Charles McKenna. All but James were born in Pensylvania.

4) Charles McKenna, born about 1838, son of Charles McKenna and Mary Lynch. He married Margaret McNally 13 Sep 1873, Glasgow, Lanark. She was the daughter of James McNally and Mary O'Neil.

5)Charles McKenna, born 29 Mar 1857 Old Monkland, Lanark, son of Hugh McKenna and Jane Boyle. He married Agnes Cairns on 2 Mar 1881, Kirkintillock, Dunbartonshire. She was the daughter of James Cairns and Janet Miller. Charles and Agnes's children were: Michael, Janet, Hugh and James McKenna.

I hope this helps someone. I have copies of the records if you need proof of this information. Enjoy

Tim

Found my Michael McKenna. He died 14 Aug 1892. OBIT does not say where or how. Was listed in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. Burial was in Holy Cross in Brooklyn in the family plot ~ 18 burials in plot ~one gravestone says McKenna ~ 4 interments identified. Michael, brother Rev Patrick, Brother Felix and Felix's wife ~ 14 more to go.
Have been unable to find a death certificate. Maybe he did not die in NY?
Does any of this help to connect him to your family? I have no idea if he had a wife or children though if he did I would assume they would have been mentioned in the OBIT. His parents were Patrick and Margaret of Eskre, Tyrone, Ireland.

Rev Patrick McKenna - b. Monaghan, d. Fermanagh

Patrick McKenna was a Catholic priest who died on 10th Sept 1913 in Brookeborough, County Fermanagh, Ireland. He may well be buried in the graveyard in the grounds of St Mary's church.

He had been born in County Monaghan to a mother named Catherine. Going by the available census and death records (which all differ), his year of birth was something around 1861 to 1873. I wouldn't be surprised, however, if the real date was earlier still.

This is a different person to the Patrick McKenna who was Bishop of Clogher diocese from 1909 to 1942.

Does anyone here have any further information about him?

More McKennas in NS at same time

James MCKENNA was born in 1802 in County Monaghan or County Tyrone, Ireland. He married Jane McQuade, but I do not know if they married in Ireland or in Nova Scotia.
He immigrated to Kentville, Kings County, Nova Scotia sometime before the birth of his first son, John, in 1841. Three more children were born in Nova Scotia: James (1843), Catherine (1844) and Andrew (1847).
The following letter gives information about the Church they were associated with in Nova Scotia. A letter from Marion Oldershaw, Nova Scotia, 9 Sept 1985:
Dear Mrs. Dougherty:
I found the baptism for ANDREW MCKENNA:
In 1848: 2 Jan at Kentville: baptized Andrew aged two weeks: legitimate son of James McKenna and Jane McQuade. Sponsors: Eugene McGarry and Mary Treanor by Thomas Walsh.
This entry was in the register of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church, Windsor, NS
Evidently the records for the years 1840-1845 were not available for micro-filming. But at least we found the baptism record for your ancestor, which proves that the family was here, and that they were living in the community of Kentville, Kings County, Nova Scotia. That community was originally called Cornwallis, and was settled in 1762 by families from New England. The Acadians were there before them. The first Catholic Church was not built until 1854. Before then, the community was served by St John’s, in Windsor.

I know this is an old post, but it struck me as funny. We have allways said the same about our McKenna side - huge hands (and I assume feet). Our great uncle Red Paddy was famous for his huge hands. Coincidence!

McKENNA - Question for All Who Bear the Name or Have McKENNA Ancestors/Relatives

I'm from Preston, Lancashire, England and was just wondering about how many McKenna's have a certain physical appearance.

My mother is a McKenna, and the name is born by the bulk of my current close relatives, but there is a genetic difference i find intresting.

My feet are size 12, whilst being only 5 foot 7 and a half (about 1.72m). This gene is seen in only my McKenna relatives. The Smith gene, when it has affected the feet, seems to make them more of an average size.

My dad and his dad are both about 5 foot 10 but have only size 8 feet.

I would like to know if this is a gene passed through many McKenna families.
