I have very little information about William McKenzie.

WILLIAM McKENZIE applied in Kansas for a pension on July 8, 1890. His widow, Sarah E. Unknown, applied for a pension on April 9, 1913(?).

He was living in Kansas in 1890 ... married to a woman named Sarah, and died by 1913.

Thanks,

Joe
morse73@ptd.net
I am descended through Samuel's (Saml) son Francis Marion McKenzie. (Francis Marion's daughter, Bessie Selina McKenzie, was my paternal grandmother. One of Francis Marion's sons, Taylor Conley McKenzie (06Jun1896-16Jun1956)has a son still living in Trion, Georgia. This son is Carl McKenzie born in 1918. I understand Francis Marion was married five (5) times. Is there other information you can share with me about Samuel (Saml) or my great-grandfather Francis Marion McKenzie. Thank you. Marion E.

I found the folowing while researching a different ancestor. It is from an affidavit made in 1866 to Second Heir and Devisee commission. I have no connection to this family.

That Donald McKenzie of Dunwich, died previous to his son Alexander (1857)
That his wife Barbara McKenzie died January 8 1857.
that Alexander McKenzie (their son) died Sept 15 1857, without being married and without lawful issue and without making a will.
That Alexander McKenzie left 2 brothers John and Colin McKenzie and two sisters: Mary wife of Donald Finlayson and Isabelle wife of Donald McPherson.
That said Alexander had 3 other brothers named Duncan, Roderic and Daniel and one sister named Christine?? all whom died before him (1857) without ever being married except Duncan who died in May 1860 without ever having been married.

The affidavit was signed by Donad McPherson who is only one who coud read and write.

The affidavit was dated January 16 1867 in Dunwich, county of Elgin in Ontario, but the land that was being discussed and that had belonged to Alexander McKenzie as a grantee was located in township of Orford, county of Kent, Ontario.

The whole document plus other were submitted to prove the claim of George Swanton to the above lot. Document available at the Archives of Ontario, RG 40 Second Heir and devisee commission. File 40-4657.

Re: Hugh McKenzie - Ross County, Ohio

The father of Jane and Isabelle McKinzie / McKinsey / McKenzie was Daniel McKinsey. I can trace him back no further than Washington Co, PA.

I have not researched in Ross County yet. Some day, . . . For instance, I do not have the marriage record or land record you mentioned. My best guess is that Hugh was the brother of Isabelle and Jane McKinsey who married Ezra Lucas and Daniel Lucas respectively and who live next to Hugh McKinsey in Ross County.

Here is some census info that I have accumulated:

1830 Census of Ross County, Ohio, Ross County Genealogical Society, Chillicothe, OH, 1996, page 5. Lucas, Daniel males: (1) under 5, (2) 5-10, (1) 30-40; females: (2) under 5, (2) 5-10, (1) 30-40. The next head of family listed is Hugh McKinsey and he is shown as 40-50 years old. The next listing is Ezra Lucas at age 40-50. The oldest female listed in Ezra's household is 20-30 years old. Also of note is a listing of a 70-80 year old male in the household of Ezra Lucas.

1830 Census from microfilm is similar to the above but shows another male age 10-15 in the Daniel Lucas houshold.

1840 Census of Buckskin Township, Ross County, Ohio on microfilm does not show either Daniel or Ezra Lucas families. Hugh McKenzie and wife are shown with one female 15-20 years old. 1840 Census of Madison Township, Highland County is not readable from the microfilm copy that I have seen.

1840 Census of Madison Township, Highland County, Ohio on microfilm shows both Daniel and Ezra families. Daniel Lucas: males (1) age 5-10, (1) 15-20, (1) 20-30, (1) 40-50, (1) 70-80; females (2) 10-15, (1) 15-20, (1) 20-30, (1) 50-60.

1850 Census of Buckskin Township, Ross County, Ohio on microfilm shows Hugh McKenzie, age 63, broom maker, born in PA, and Elizabeth, age 64, born in Virginia.

1850 Census of Madison Township, Highland County, Ohio shows the families of Ezra, age 61, born in Ohio with Isabel, age 60, born in PA; and the household of Ezra, age 22. The household of Jane Lucas, age 60, born in PA, with Isaac B., age 26, farmer, and Isabel, age 23.

After re-reading the posts, I am wondering if all the McKenzies in Ross, OH are related. Maryland & Pennsylvania share a boarder and the Twin twp McKenzies were back and forth between the 2 states in the late 1700's. Do you have any data that would confirm these are two different families? The distance between Washington Co, PA and Maryland is about 50 mi. Moses McKenzie, the father to Joshua, Moses, etc, had chidlren in both states. What do you think?

The 1830 Buckskin, Ross, OH fed cen lists Hugh M Kinsey:
15-20=1
20-30=1
40-50=1 = Hugh
Females
u5=2
u5=2
5-10=1 = Rebecca?
10-15=1
20-30=1=Elizabeth?
Hugh & Eliz were m. 15 Sep 1818, which would have been 12 yrs prior to the 1830 census. On the m. cert. Hugh is listed as W. Hugh McKinsey. Elizabeth Keller was married prior to her marriage to Hugh. This would indicate the only possible children would be 3 or 4 females, unless the 20-30 yr old male was married to the 20-30 female & Eliz was not listed. The 2 females u5 could belong to them. Another possibility, the census taker put the marks in the wrong slots, which would make females 15-20 & 30-40, which would then be the wife & Eliz. If this were the case, Rebecca would be the only child of Hugh & Eliz. This is all sounding very confusing.

Also, I have a copy of the land document of Hugh giving his house & property to George W & Martha E Thomas, ages 29 & 26, in exchange for his care until the end of his life. Could they be grandchildren, nephew or neice? Rebecca was living in IL at this time.

Do you have any idea who the parents of Jane or Isabelle were?

I have not worked on my McKenzie line in a year, but I would welcome any additional information you have from your end on Ann McCuaig's family and particularly anything on your Donald McKenzie.

Thanks for your reply.

P.S.
I do have info on Ann McCuaigs family (her parents and siblings) but had never been able to find what happened to her sons. Peter, Alexander, William and John were all listed on the 1852, 1861 and 1871 censuses but then disappeared leaving only Andrew and his mother in 1881. Murdoch is on the 1852 and 1861 censuses only - then he disapeared.

Any info you could furnish on John and Alexander (I assume your A.S. is Alexander) would be appreciated.

I`d be glad to tell you what I know about Ann. Please e-mail or post her,

Mike

There are a number of Murphys in the Stellarton, Nova Scotia, church records of the 1860s, but none seem to be related to her. Good luck.

Jane Hardy in Morayshire

I have John McKenzie and Jean/Hardy producing at least three children in Duffus, Moray.

John was born in 1802, Elspet in 1917, and George in 1819.

George was a flesher/butcher and married Christina Ross. I have his death certificate which indicates that John was a crofter.

I have not been able to find any trace of John (junior).

I do have an Elizabeth McKenzie who married Andrew Sutherland in Duffus, where Elizabeth was born about 1820. They then moved to Sutherlandshire. She was alive for the 1851 census (hence the above information) but died young.

In Family Search there is a birth of Elspeth to John McKenzie and Jean Hurdy, christened 16 Jun 1817 Duffus, Morayshire (obtained parish baptism from Scotlandspeople but there were no other clues). In the naming of their children the first female name is Jane, the next two had Andrew's parents names, and the fourth child was female, but given a female version of John, ie Johan. From this ordering of the names one would expect the wife's parents to be John and Jane, which supports the above christening record. The two following children were named after their parents, which also follows the traditional naming pattern.

Does anyone know this family? I have been unable to find the marriage of John McKenzie and Jane Hardy, nor have I been able to locate their deaths.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards
Sue

Oh my God, I can't believe that I may have found part of my long lost family. My birth Mother was Patrizia Zane Mckenzie, sister of James Oran! She died when I was 10 months old and I have seen none of her side of the family, ever. My adopted Mother, Marjorie, married Patrizia's husband, Eugene Muth, in 1957. She died in March and I have located documents that indicate James Oran and Patrizia Zane were born as Cassells in Chattanooga Tenneesee. I don't know if anyone ever checks these, this was posted 10 years ago!

Ann McKenzie and James Wilkie - Dundee to Australia

I am researching Ann McKenzie and James Wilkie married in Dundee around 1886. They had one child - Betsy Jane who was born 1887. They emigrated to Australia in 1888. Ann's family owned a tea room/wine shop in Dundee. The owner was James McKenzie who could have been Ann's brother. James married Bella Fyffe on 8 January 1895 in Dundee. I would love to make contact with others from this family.
