Obit: McLaughlin, Emma 1843-1908 (Johnstown, PA)

Mrs. Emma McLaughlin.

Mrs. Emma McLaughlin, widow of David Gordon McLaughlin, died at 3 o’clock yesterday morning at Dr. Marvel’s private sanatorium in Atlantic City, where she had been for a week or so undergoing treatment. Mrs. McLaughlin’s health had been impaired for some time, but she was able to be about up to the time she entered the sanatorium. The cause of her death was acute dilatation of the heart, superinduced by chronic Bright’s disease.
The deceased, who was about sixty-five years of age, was married twice. Her first husband, Mr. Rich, died many years ago, and some time later she was wedded to David G. McLaughlin, who died suddenly at the Franklin Plant of the Cambria Steel company on October 3, 1906. Miss Ada Rich, only daughter of Mrs. McLaughlin, died in Johnstown in January, 1892. Mrs. Margaret Dubbs, of Allentown, is the only surviving sister of the deceased. W. J. McLaughlin, of South Dakota, who visited here recently, is a brother-in-law.
The remains were brought to Johnstown this morning and were conveyed to the McLaughlin residence, No. 427 Vine street, First Ward, by Undertaker Henderson. The funeral will probably take place to-morrow afternoon, when the deceased’s pastor, the Rev. Dr. C. C. Hays, of the First Presbyterian Church, will conduct the obsequies. The remains will be laid to rest in Grand-View Cemetery.

Source: THE JOHNSTOWN TRIBUNE (Johnstown, Cambria, Pennsylvania) Monday Evening, 28 September 1908, “THE DEATH ROLL,” page 6, column 4; Cambria County Public Library, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

I am searching for information on ANy Mclaughlins in Alleghany Co. Specifically those related to Cephus( Sephus) Mclaughlin. He may have married a Mary O'Sullivan but I have not confirmed this yet. I do know that they did have a daughter together. And to the best of my knowledge she was named Mary O'Sullivan as well. She married A Foley and Had a Daughter named Glaydas Marie Foley. I am guessing the years to be in the 1800's. THey are my Great, Great Great- Grandparents. If you have any information or any of this sounds familiar Please Email me or reply to this message.
McClaughlin family from Belmont Township, Peterborough, Ontario

Recently discovered that my maternal Great Grandmother's name was Mary Jane McLaughlin. She was born in Sept 1832 in Belmont Township, Peterborough, Ontario. I believe her father was William McLaughlin who was born in either England or Ireland. I do not know Mary Jane's mother's name. She did have a sister Amanda who married a John Vansickle and a brother Robert H. McLaughlin who married a Mary. Mary Jane married a James Brown about 1848 in Belmont and 6 children; William, Thomas, George, John, Mary Jane and Elizabeth. Mary Jane was widowed before 1871 and eventually moved to the States to be with sons John and George. She died in 1912 in Saginaw, Michigan. Mary Jane's son John J. Brown married a Francis Kern and had 3 children; Stanley, Delbert and John Kenneth. Anyone who has a connection or who knows of this family please reply

I have no further info but additional old newspaper extracts may be found at URL:

www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php

Vern D
/////////////////////////////////
Transcribed by Dee Sardoc
////////////////////////////////
Stockton Daily Independent
Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA
-----------------------------------------
>>FRIDAY, 1 FEB 1867<<

CALIFORNIANS KILLED in MONTANA -- We have been shown, says the 'Alta,' a private letter dated at Diamond City, Montana, Jan. 1st, 1867, which came to a gentleman in this city yesterday, giving several items of interest concerning old Californians, and the condition of affairs in that Territory. The writer says:

In the latter part of December a party of 7 old Californians left Diamond City and went to Cave Gulch, 30 miles below, to look for claims. They found a party of "Dutch stranglers" in possession of hill claims, and also of gulch ground to the amount of twice or 3 times what the law entitles them to, and thereupon staked off a portion of the overplus, with the purpose of working it. They told the rival party that if they could make good their claim to the ground in question, they (the Californians) would leave but otherwise they would hold the ground and work it even if they had to fight against odds of 2 to 1. The 1st party drew out and left the Californians in possession of the ground. The Californians went on working for some days and then commenced to build a log cabin. While they were engaged in rolling logs, the 1st party came down 9 in number, armed with Henry rifles, and getting into a shanty, 2 yards distant, fired upon them, killing instantly Pat OSBORNE, Tom CHEEVER, Michael McLAUGHLIN and John HASSETT, and wounding 2 others, then fled to Helena. A warrant for their arrest, on the charge of murder was taken out at Diamond City, and placed in the hands of Edward LOVELOCK, Sheriff of Meagher county, formerly employed as a runner for the California Steam Navigation Company, in San Francisco, during opposition times, who, with a force, repaired to Helena, arrested the whole 9, and brought them to Diamond City, where they were immediately indicted. Their trial was to commence on Monday, the 7th instant.
Ancestor/Descendent info on Peter McLaughlin, County Down, Ireland born abt 1808

Does anyone have any ancestor/descendent info on this McLaughlin line? Would like to find info on Peter's brother John also.

Written information was recieved from Jack McLaughlin, but , information is the same that has been passed down verbally from generation to generation.

In the early days of the 19th. Century, Peter Thomas McLaughlin left Co. Down, Ireland , where he was born to try; his luck in the "New Empire", USA . Port of imbarkation was Phila. Pa. Later on he went to Pittsburgh, Pa. Where he met Mary Walker who he wed.
They moved from Pittsburgh to a small town outside of New Alexandria, Pa. called "Irishtown". To this union were born four children namely John, William (great grandfather of T.W. McLaughlin) , Thomas P. and daughter Mary Ann. Irishtown would be in Salem Twp. Westmoreland Co.,Pa.
The family later moved to Armstrong County, Cowanshannock Twp. in the spring in 1829. It was known as the Green Oak section of Cownashannock Twp. In 1829 Cowanshannock Twp. would have been primitive and a frontier type of living. The farm was known as the Peter Thomas McLaughlin farm.
Peter Thomas McLaughlin still had two sisters in Ireland and a brother John in Canada, whom he visited in the fall of 1834.
Then left for his birthplace in County Down , Ireland in 1855. He went to Ireland to settle up the homestead of his parents. The estate had been claimed by a friend of his. Peter Thomas had to go to the law for the claim and finally won. He died suddenly not knowing how or why. The fortune was never herard from afterwards.
Peter Thomas was buried in Plumbridge Cemetery, County Tyrone, Ireland.

John Joseph McLaughlin of New Jersey

I am trying to find out anything about my paternal grandfather, John J. McLaughlin of New Jersey, and his family. He was born around 1898 and died around 1930. The 1910 census lists him as a 12-year old boarder in Bloomfield, NJ with the Glennon family. I know he is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Bloomfield. He was married to Kathleen Kenah and had two children, John F. (my father, now deceased) and Sarah. He was a World War I veteran and rode with the Essex Troop in West Orange, NJ. That is basically all I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am searching for the descendants of one of my great uncles, born in 1882 in Buncranna/Turnabratly, Co Donegal Ireland who moved to Glasgow, Scotland with his siblings: John, Rosie, Annie, George and possibly James? He moved to glasgow with them in 1896 and subsequently moved to the USA (we think). He possibly settled in Boston,Massachusetts with his own family. We are not sure of the date of his immigration but we think it was around the turn of the century. His mother and father were called Margeret Mclaughlin and Patrick Mclaughlin respectively.

trying to research my family back to Ireland - McLaughlin/Devin

My dad's name was Leo Bernard. I believe he
was born in Bethel Conn. His mother (my grand
mother)name was Catherine. He had 3 brothers,Mike, Joe and John (my namesake). For years they lived on Batchelder St. in Roxbury (Boston), Massachusetts. I'm not sure, I think my Grandfather's name was also Leo. He died before I was born. I believe my grandmother's maiden name was Devin??? I had an Uncle Joe who owned a home in Braintree, Mass. back in the late forties and then moved to Hanson, Mass. for many years. His wife's name was Lillian and they had many children as I recall. My Uncle John was a Merchant Marine during ( after) WW 2. He lived in Baltimore, Maryland. My Uncle Mike was divorced and had one child that I can recall, Irene (Renee). Unfortunately I do not know as much as I should about my McLaughlin's, as, I was "reared" more by my Italian side of my family after my dad died in 1950. My dad was a Longshoreman in the forties working the docks of Boston Harbor.
I have a sister Catherine (Kay) Mclaughlin Colby

They came to America around 1868 and settled in Steubenville.

They first went to England about 1865, where a daughter Ella was born.

They had four other daughters:
Catherine, b.1860, Ireland, d.1912, Toronto, Ohio, m. Edward Cadegan, b.1859, Nova Scotia, Canada, d.1928, Toronto. She was my grandmother.
Bridget, b.1861, Ireland, d.1928, Steubenville, m.John Ross Devlin, b.1857, d.1928.
Mary, b.1870, Steubenville
Lillian Amelia, b.1878, Steubenville, d.1949, m. When and where did they get married. Where did Patrick die. We have no record of his death. I would appreciate any available information. Noreen Rose

Mountain Democrat
Placerville, El Dorado, California
30 Apr 2008
page A-7

Harry Thomas McLaughlin

April 12, 1921-April 22, 2008
Our loved husband and father, Harry Thomas McLaughlin, shed his bond to this life on April, 22, 2008, after a brief illness, at the age of 87. He will always be remembered as a sweet, kind, loving and witty man. He saw humor in so much of life, and his laughter will not be forgotten. As a World War II veteran, he served his country with the Flying Tigers, as a radioman, in China and India. He taught his children Morse Code, which we have long forgotten. In his earlier years, he was an avid hunter. He continued to enjoy fishing. Harry retired after 30 years with the Operating Engineers, with the call name Blademan.Eleven of those years as a heavy equipment operator was with Bennet Murray. He and Mary kept busy in retirement, with gardening and making items for their craft booths at Apple Hill and other craft shows. Harry volunteered his time and participated in the activities in the organizations of, the Pleasant Valley Grange, Placerville Elks Lodge, Placerville Masons, and E Clampus Vitis. He is survived by his much loved wife, Mary, children: Zana Harp (John), Sue Crisp (Ben), Mona Thorne (Don), Mary Ellen Carlson, Harry E. (Skip) McLaughlin, Greg Crouch, Kathy Lawler (Mike), Tammy Doyle (Robert), and 51 grand, great grand, and great, great grandchildren. Another son, Jene Mason, is deceased. A memorial service will be held on May 3rd., 2008, at 12 noon, at Green Valley Community Church, located at, 5500 Missouri Flat Road, Placerville, California. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate those who whish to make memorial donations, to send them to the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California Northern Nevada, Inc., 121 Steuart St. Ste. 520, San Francisco, CA 94105-1240

Northern Ireland Connection

Hi Clan,
I have been looking for a connection to my James McLaughlin, born Northern Ireland, early 1800s. (I would welcome a truly unique given name for my ancestors some times!).
I have come across a reference to the family home in Northern Ireland, County Antrim, possibly the parish of Loughguile. The family home was reportedly named "Rosehill" or "Rosehall".
I was wondering/hoping that maybe someone had a family reference there too.
I have a photo that I will try to scan at some point in the near future. It shows a two-story home on the left, partially covered by a fairly large tree, with a road coming up from the bottom right of the page curving to the upper left. The right side of the photo shows what looks to be either farm buildings, with three separate tiered buildings all connected.
Looking forward to your responses,
Bruce
Maryland
