McLean Denny Paisley

I'm looking for any information on Moses McLean (and/or any family) b. c. 1750. First wife Mary? children; John, William, Samuel, Zilla, ?, Fountain Bell and Elizabeth. Second wife Susannah Dick child; Benjamin McLean 1800-1863 m. Isabelle Denny d. of William Denny and Margaret Paisley Denny. Many Denny and Paisley marriages with these McLean's.
In 1778 Moses received a state grant for a 200 acre tract just west of Buffalo church, in 1790 census in Guilford NC., 1796 m. Susanna D., 1810 census Greensboro, Guilford, NC.
Any information on him or family would be much appreciated. No idea where he came from, parents, etc. Because the family is Presbyterian in faith (rather than Irish Catholic) I would "think" the family Scottish but am not certain. Have been told the family is Scottish but no hard evidence.

Hi Cathy,
Apparently there is no connection. Both my grandfather and great uncle lived to old age. My uncle Ernest lived in North Carolina all his life and my grandfather moved to Chicago in the early years of the 20th Cent.
The "McLean" last name, in their case was not their legal name, but was associated with them since their mother's married name was McLean before their were born (illegitimately, it seems). They grew up with their maternal grandmother ("Hendren") and bore her last name as their legal name, as was common in such circumstances in those days.

Did you find out any more info about Ernest and Jesse McLean? I just wondered as I have a mystery McLean in our family tree and while researching it, found another Jesse and Ernest McLean that may have been part of your family tree?(cousins?) They died young, casualties of a tornado in Indiana but were brothers, and also a 60-yr-old Ernest McLean was listed as a casualty as well (father to the boys?) and a Russell McLean as injured. This was in 1917.

Cathy

I understood from my grandmother that we are related to the McLean family of Appomattox. Could it be that her father was John Wilmer McLean or could that have been her grandfather?

Hello,
It appears you are stuck right where I am with my ggg grandfather Duncan Mclean born 1804. I have photos of his family cemetery just outside of Melbourne Ontario, once called Mayfair. I was given a family tree that says his parents were Donald "Dan" Mclean, and Catharine Mcgilip, but that they retained the spelling Maclean, and were from North Knapdale, then moved to South Knapdale. I have found some inconclusive evidence of Duncan's immigration and of his parents. It might make sense to share my tree if you would like to do so let me know.
D. Palmer

They had a child, Henry William Neelans on 20 Mar 1862.

In the 1860 census there is a McLean family living in Enfield. Parents are Robert and Mary both born 1810 in Ireland. Children with birth year and location were; Mary, 1840 Ireland, Rosanna 1842 Ireland, Lucinda 1844 Ireland, Charles 1848 Ireland and William 1851 Connecticut. Obviously, because of the last two children, the family came around the time of the famine. Unfortunately, I can't find anything else that I can be sure of for this family either in the census or immigration.

Does anyone have any further information for Rosanna or her family?

What a frustrating family. There are so many McLEANs from Argyll! I have a Duncan and Margaret Campbell McLEAN from Kilcalmonell and Kilberry from which they emigrated with 4 children in abt. 1837 to Caradoc Twp., Middlesex Co.Ontario, Canada.
The fact that your Martha McKINVEN was born in Kilcalmonell makes me wonder if there might be a connection.
I look forward to hearing from you.

The short answer is I do not know if they are brothers. There is also the possibility they might even be cousins in some way.

I have a Duncan McLean, b.ca. 1795, in Scotland, in the McLean Cemetery, Con. 7, Lot 24, Caradoc Twp., Middlesex Co., Row 3, Stone 3, died September 15, 1847, aged 52 years.
(This grave is said to have had an earlier stone which said "In memory of Duncan McLean . . . and inscriptions for 22 children side . . . side of which the only bit readable was . . . mos. 21 ds.) The present stone also includes his wife, Mary Sinclair, b.ca. 1795, died November 29, 1835, aged 40 years. Natives of Scotland. Also 4 infant children (no data). Catherine McKinley, w/o D. McLean, died September 7, 1848, aged 72 yrs, 1 mo. (A piece of white marble says, died September 27, 1878, aged 72 yrs., 1 mo., and is over the back wire fence.) Also her daughter, Catherine, died 1844 (no dates), aged 6 yrs, 6 mos. Christina McLean, w/o M. Dewar, died December 13, 1884, aged 62 yrs. f.s. Christina.

Also from a reset facsimile edition of the book: "Some Sketches of The Early Pioneers of The County of Middlesex", by Hugh McColl, Strathroy Postmaster, (November 1 1876 to February 22, 1910), originally prepared for the Gaelic Society of Toronto and published in 1904, under the sub-title: The Township of Caradoc, pages 34-35, comes the following:

"The Highland settlement in Caradoc was in the northern and eastern part of the township, extending westward some five miles from the Lobo townline. The pioneers of Lobo and Caradoc were practically one community, and always in lcose touch with each other." Donald Campbell provided the author with a "list of the Caradoc pioneers, which is believed nearly complete and accurate, and the dates of settlement substantially correct."

Included on that list are: "LACHLIN SINCLAIR, Finachairn, 1825", whose daughter Sarah married a Duncan McLean. . . . "CHARLES MCCLEAN, Caolasraide, 1831, d. in Enniskillen, c.: Malcolm, Allan, Annie (Mrs. Keith), Sarah (Mrs. A. Johnston), Mary (Mrs. D. Turner), Catherine (Mrs. A. Duncan), Bella; ALLAN MCCLEAN, Caolasraide, 1831, c.: John, Hector, Allan, Archie, Charles, Duncan, M. D., at Deckerville, Mich., Isabella at home; DUNCAN MCCLEAN, Caolasridae, 1831, c. John L., in Strathroy, Charles A.; NEIL MCCLEAN (weaver), Lochgair, 1831, (family reocrd further on) . . ."

"D. J. Campbell gives some interesting particulars about NEIL MCCLEAN (weaver), who came from Inverary in 1831. His wife (Mary McIntyre) died in Montreal. His son Hugh was married, but his wife died a short time before they left, and the two young children, Neil and Maggie, were in the care of their father and grandfather. Hugh went sailing and died of lake fever. The old weaver and the two little children were alone on his location, lot 21, con. 9. Sarah Sinclair (Mrs. Duncan McLean) took charge of the weaver's house and grandchildren until her husband died in 1835. The boy Neil had a farm on lot 21, con. 9, Caradoc, and died 1902. The girl is Mrs. Alex Dolphin." Neil actually died in 1901.

As you may have discovered there were a lot of McLean's with the same first names. It is a daunting task to try to figure out who belongs to who.

Just off the top of my head, about all I know about Neil McLean, Jr., is that his parents as listed in the marriage register are Hugh and Sarah. Sarah died shortly before they left Scotland. He is on the 1852 Caradoc census with his younger sister, Margaret, and his grandfather, Neil McLean, Sr., a weaver. If I remember correctly, Neil, Sr., was born about 1777, Scotland. Neil, Sr.'s wife, is supposed to have died in Montreal. Hugh is supposed to have died of lake fever, leaving Neil, Sr., to raise Neil, Jr., and Margaret. A lady named Sarah Sinclair/McLean is supposed to have kept house for Neil, Sr. I think she had a son named Duncan L(achlan) McLean, but I'm not 100% sure. Haven't been able to connect the dots biologically to Charles and Duncan, but it is food for thought. I haven't worked on the McLean line for a while.

Yes! We are definitely looking at the same family. Arthur Kippan (your grandfather) was the second son of Hugh and Catherine. He was born on 23 Sept 1892 on the family homestead near Carlyle, SK. He died on 24 April 1977 in Weyburn, SK and was buried in the cemetery in Manor, SK., just east of Carlyle. He and Catherine Rutten were married on 25 OCt 1916 in Carlyle. My grandfather, Duncan Alexander Kippan was his older brother. If you would like more information, please contact me at janharris@sasktel.net
I have quite a bit of information about you grandparents.
Hi there! I read your message and I "think" I might be looking for info on the same people! The two names that are familiar to me are Catherine and Hugh Kippan. I "believe" these people are my great great grandparents? My grandmother is Catherine Ida Kippan and I believe her father is Arthur William Kippan. The only other info I have about Arthur william Kippan is he married a Catherine Rutten and I believe his father is "Hugh Kippan and his mother is Catherine (unsure of her maiden name)? Hugh was born in 1862 Catherine born in 1864 in Ontario?
What I can maybe gather from your info is that Peter & Margaret are then Catherine's parents? Peter McLean and Margaret Ross? My dad's side (Moore) are all from the Saskatchewan area (Carlyle). Are you related somehow to these people then?

Would love to hear from you!

Trina

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. J. B. (ALICE MCLEAN) GROTEVANT
JANUARY 28, 1937

Mr. J. B. Grotevant died in the Pontiac hospital Wednesday (Jan. 27) moring at 7:45 o'clock of pneumonia which developed Friday evening.
The body was brought to Chatsworth and the funeral services will be held in the Baptist church Friday afternoon, January 29, at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. E.W. Crockett. Burial will be in the Chatsworth cemetery.
Mrs. Grotevant fell at her home in Chatsworth November 21 and fractured a knee cap. She was taken to the Pontiac hospital about two weeks later for an operation. She improved nicely and shortly before Christmas was taken to the home of her son, gene Grotevant, in Pontiac. The wound healed nicely and she was able to get around the house some on crutches.
About two weeks ago she became ill with flu and Friday evening pneumonia developed and Saturday she was taken back to the hospital and every effort was made to save her life.
Alice McLean was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.B. McLean, of Tremont, where she was born on April 26, 1863.
She was married to J.B. Grotevant June 24, 1891, at Tremont and soon thereafter the couple came to Healey, south of Chatsworth, and opened a general store and bought grain. Three years later they moved to Charlotte, where for eleven years Mr. Grotevant bought grain for the Middle Division Elevator company.
In 1907 the couple moved to Chatsworth and he became manager of the local electric light plant. In 1912 he was named superintendent and she matron of the Livingston County Home, south of Pontiac, where they continued to reside for 19 years.
Upon retiring from the county farm jobs Mr. and Mrs. Grotevant moved back to Chatsworth and lived a retired life. Mrs. Grotevant, however, continued active in church and club work and was beloved by many people.
Surviving are the husband and two children, Mrs. Grace Hughes, of Detroit, and Gene, of Pontiac. One son, Walter, died while the family lived in Charlotte. There are also three brothers, H.S. McLean, of Rialto, California; and William and John McLean, of Jacksonville. One sister and one brother and her parents preceded her in death.

I think that you mean that John McLean came from Badenoch, Kingussie in Inverness-shire. I have him as living and having children in Duack or Nethybridge about 20 miles away from 1861 onwards.

I am related to him as Mary McLean was my Great grandmother

Yes, my grandfather, Wellington Earl McLean was called "Tink".So he would be the one I"m looking for. Did you say his father's name was James McLean? I'm actually looking to go back one more generation, to James's father. I was told that he married an Indian woman. Is this true? If so, what tribe was she from? Regards, Sheila McLean Versteeg.

Re: CHARLES FLORA MCLEAN-NOVA SCOTIA/PEI

Saw this on 5Aug11. My grandmother, Ruth (aka Sarah Harriet Ruth) MacLean, was one of Flora and Charles' children. Would appreciate being in contact especially as I am planning a trip to Dundas, as well as Nova Scotia in early Sept. As we know, Flora was born in Sydney and Charles was from Inverness county, NS. Most (all?) of their grown children, including Ruth, moved to the Boston, MA area in the 1890s. Ruth trained as a nurse and, later, married John J. Maney and lived in Lawrence, MA where their son, John MacLean Maney, who was my father, was born.

Ardith Maney

James McLean in Ohio, possibly KY and WV also

Looking for ANY info on the following family. James McLean (aprox 1921-1960) lived in Butler Co Ohio, raised by foster parents Milton and Crissie Hale. Had at least one brother (possibly older) and a sister Geneva. Geneva was raised by foster parents Myrtle and and William Wheeler in West Virginia. Both James and Geneva are with foster parents in the 1930 census. Their mother is believed to have died between 1923 and 1930. Older brother Ed believed to have stayed with father. According to oral family history, there was another brother, adopted (or fostered) by a Cobb family. The unusual thing is that the older was Eddie and the younger Ed. Possible but perhaps the names were confused or there may have been only one Ed.

James used the name Hale until he joined the army. His biological father may have spelled the name a little differently.

Unsure why James was in Ohio and Geneva in WV. There also seems to be ties to KY.

Any info will be appreciated, small clues sometimes leads to more info. Anyone having any info about this family may contact me.

Re: King George, VA McLeans

Hello, Casey. I have found the family in the 1910 census living in King George Co., VA under the name of Helen Ashley. In 1920, Margaret and Thomas are gone and she has a new baby named Virginia Constance. In the 1930 census, Constance is the adopted daughter of Charles Hundley and his wife Amalie. I also found online when William and Constance married. You can go to the new site at Familysearch.org. to find this information. On the marriage information, one gave their father as Samuel Ashley and the other Eugene Ashley. This informaton has not helped me very much. It is as though these people did not exist. I am helping a family member who is the daughter of Margaret Louise McLean. How are you connected to the family? I live in Richmond, VA and am somewhat familiar with the Smoot family. I attended a seminar conducted by Sherri Eichler at Deep Run Baptist Church. Any information that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
