Hi, I am the child Kenneth you mention, my father was Rodeick and my mother (still live in Dingwall aged 88 years). Kenneth MacLennan who married Katie May was my grandfather - I am the 11th Generation decendant of the main MacLennan family line from the Heights of Kinlochewe.

I have a very extensive family tree that dates back to around early 1500s most of which was handed down to me written in a family bible.

If you would like more info on the Maclennans from Kinlochewe Heights i.e. Glen Logan - get in touch via email at kenny.maclennan@btinternet.com

Regards

Kenny.

Hello. My husband Ira Drysdale and I have been compiling information on the John Mclennan who arrived in Pictou on the Sarah in 1801. John and family and Murdo and family sailed from the same place and so we think they were likely brothers or at least related. Both John and Murdo had lots of land on McLennan's Mountain. Ira's GGrandfather was John Jr., brother of Catherine who married Alpine MacDougall. Other siblings incuded Mary who married Alexander Patterson, Anne, Duncan, Donald, Kenneth and Murdoch. We have family info on each family and would like to share what we have been able to piece together.

Hello. My ancestor was Alpine McDougall who married a Catherine McLennan at Pictou on Jun 19, 1823. She was living at McLennan's Mountain and he lived at Blue Mountain, Pictou, Nova Scotia. Their five children were all born in Nova Scotia and then the family moved to Chicago, Illinois. Her birth date from the US 1860 Census was 1796 which could fit the "infant daughter" description in 1801, so this may be John and Christian's daughter.

No, I'm not related to the family. My McLennans come from Gairloch, but it's always a nice break to search for McLennans in other areas of Scotland when someone posts a querie. Apparently I do have some distant relatives in PEI, but I've never found the exact link. The closest I've come to is an Ann McLennan married to an Alexander McGregor. But they died in the 1840's and there's no death records to verify their parents.

Cheers,
Francisco

He went to PEI ca. 1858 and his uncle John was there to meet him. I know of none of them who immigrated to NZ or Australia.

OK, I get it, Angus would be one of Alexander's brothers. Looks like he won't be that easy to find. By 1841 he doesn't seem to be in the Raasay/Rona area. On the other hand, Donald (Alexander's brother) is living in the household next to Alexander's family in 1841 and 1851.

I'll try some other places in Scotland for Angus and if I find something I'll post it.

Cheers,
Francisco

No I am specifically looking for a son of Ronald and probably Margaret and on Rona or Raasay. I have information that there was such a son but no evidence at this point. I have evidence for Ronald's other sons, Alexander (who you referenced with his wife Christy Nicolson in my post re Norman McLennan), Murdo, John and Donald. If this Angus lived until 1900 as I was told, there should be evidence for him somewhere--either in Scotland, Canada or the South Pacific.

The only Angus McLennan I can find in Portree in 1851 is this one:

1851 Census, Oisgaig, Portree:

Allan MacLennan Head 31
Margaret 47
James 23
Janet 21
Norman 18
John 15
Anne 10
John 8
Angus 6
Flora McSween Visitor 40

Some names more or less match those of your other message, so it makes me wonder how certain you are that Angus was the son of Ronald/Donald. The wrote the surname every way could think. As that branch of my exhubbys family are Mcgee macghie magee. There were 10 kids and all spelt different. But I have had the same problem with Mclennan's. Some are Mac some just mc . Some with o some with e and then some with a. So I now check all mclennan, mclennon ,mclennen.Plus the Mac...
I certainly agree with that! Having said that, I just discovered a marriage record in which my husband's grandmother Jeanie Ritchie McLennan was listed as a McLellan. That was most infuriating as this was an actual record, not a transcribed one. It means that there could be many records I'm missing because they are spelled incorrectly.
It does seem bizarre to have your own brothers and sisters with an inability to get registered with the same surname!

For reference. In the real world, MacLellan and MacLennan are, as mentioned by a previous poster, very different clans from very different parts of Scotland.

They came to Canada at an early age, were married outside Montreal, and farmed and about 12 years before they died they came to Urbana , Illinois to live with there son Angus Mclennan. They had 14 children and Alexander died 2 years before his wife, When she died there were 7 children still listed as alive and she had 2 brothers and a sister in Montreal. I have an original obituary of Jeannnette Mckroane Mclennan, Angus Mclennan, Cora Mclennan, Fred Mclennan, and Angus son Roy Mclennan.
Re: McLennan to Pictou, Nova Scotia in 1801

According to the FHL Film No. 1298866, John McLennan arrived aboard the "Sarah" in 1801, accompanied by his wife Christian and his infant daughter Catherine.

McLennan is a somewhat unusual surname, even in Scotland. There are not, and were not, a lot of McLennan's living anywhere.

It is proven fact that James Stewart and Catherine/Katherine McLennan had four children born in Cumberland Co. in the early 1830's. The baptisms of the children are all well documented in Church of Scotland Records. (The minister came to Cumberland County from Scotland, stayed for several years, and took all of the records of baptisms, marriages and burials back to Scotland when he returned home. Thankfully, the FHL has filmed those records, which are a God send for anyone researching early Cumberland Co. families)+

The only question is: Is this Catherine McLennan the same person as the one that arrived in 1801? If not, where did she come from?

So far as I have been able to determine, the ONLY McLennan's in all of Nova Scotia at that time were the ones in Pictou County. So, I strongly suspect that she would have to have been related to one of those families.

By the way, the Highland Clearances had been going on for years by 1801/02.

The McLennan's that came to Pictou in 1801/02 were on the vessel Sarah. The Sarah and Dove were two vessels that left Scotland at the beginning of the Highland Clearances. The Hector you ask about went to Pictou about 174?, also well documented. The McLennan's that came to Pictou on the Sarah were John and Murdoch, with their wives and children. They settled on McLellan's Mountain. My family is from Murdoch, through his son Kenneth born there in about 1813. Unfortunately, there are no real records available from that time to figure out who all the children were or where they went. There is another person I know who is from the John McLennan that settled there, however we can not prove if they are related.

Thanks, Bruce. I'll look at the website. My Donald McLennan was born around 1803 in Rosemarkie, although the PR for Rosemarkie does not have him listed. I'll keep trying.
Thanks again,
Lorna
