My Great Grandfather, John Mac Manus lived in Painstown (near Mullingar)and had a sister, Elizabeth Mac Manus, who died in Buenos Aires. Probably the name of his father was Andrew, as his only son was named Andrew.
I do not know if he had a brother Hugh, but I will ask the family in Ireland. They still live in Mullingar and in the area.

Hi,

My 2x Great Grand Father, Michael McManus, born around 1830 in Ireland, may have been from Roscommon. He married his wife Maria Spelman, a native of County Roscommon around the 1850's, probably in NYC.

They had a son name Edward (born in US), and their other son, my Great Grand Father, Thomas also named one of his son's Edward. Thomas other son, my Grand Father, name one of his son's Edward as well.

The name Edward was passed on for 3 Generations of my immediate family.

Cheers,

Kevin

John Daniel McManus, Ireland, 1880's

I am trying to find information on a John Daniel McManus born about 1880 in Ireland. Not sure if he married an Alice Gertrude Johnson (could have possibly been Gorham, and I have no dates for her) but they had a daughter (my grandmother,) Alice Gertrude McManus born on Jan 29, 1921 (in Boston, Massachusetts) and died May 3, 1981 (in Staten Island, NY.) John Daniel and Alice's daughter, Alice McManus, was put into foster care where she was taken in by her foster mother Mary Jane Phinney (Finney?) for several years. I know that she was still with her foster mother at the age of 3 in 1924 since I have a photo of the two together.
I'm actually trying to find any info on all 3 of them. I don't know much about my grandmother, Alice McManus' childhood, but I pretty much have the rest of her life covered via my mother. Supposedly my grandmother, Alice, had a daughter before my mother, who she named Barbra Ann(e) McManus in 1952 who was put up for adoption. I am unsure of who Barbra's father is or if she is even still alive.

I know nothing about Alice Gertrude Johnson (Gorham?) who would be my g-grandmother and the only thing I know about my g-grandfather John Daniel McManus is that he was born in Ireland (not sure where abouts though,) around 1880 and then at some point traveled to the USA and lived in Massachusetts.

1-John Daniel Mcmanus (1880 - ) in Ireland
+Alice Gertrude Johnson (Gorham?) (?-?)
2-Alice Gertrude McManus (1921 - 1981)in Boston, Massachusetts (Foster Mother, Mary Jane Phinney (Finney?))
+Unknown
3-Barbra Ann(e)McManus (1952-?)in possibly MA or NY (Put up for adoption)
+George Arnold Bowie (1897-1974) in Canada
3-Mcmanus (My mother - Living)
+Shehan (Living)
4-Myself

I've seen a few postings on here that have a lot of similarities with my John McManus, but the dates would always be off, or there was no further info for me to go off of.

If any one has heard of the McManus' that I have listed or has any information on them, I would be very happy to hear from you.

-Darcy Shehan

McManus in Athlone, Roscommon

I'm looking for some connections to my ancestors I've traced back to Roscommon (Athlone) in the 1800s. I know of an Edward McManus that married a Maria (possibly Mary) Broderick in 1851. Let's assume they were both born somewhere between 1820-1830. I am then aware they had at least 4 daughters (Brigit, Catherine, Maria (seeing Honora as well), and Margaret who is my great great grandmother). I know Margaret McManus became Kane after emigrating to the US in the mid 1880s. She died in 1911 in Philadelphia. Basically, I'm looking for any ties back to Ireland for either the McManus line or the Broderick line.

My aunt Joyce left us this list in our family album. But she doesn't say how she knows this. And doesn't cite documentation. She died now so I can't ask her. I would like to validate this information and find supporting documentation.

James Scollon married to Rose McManus. They had four sons:

Phillip b. 1833
James b. 1836
John b. 1839
Felix b. 1867

Born in Ireland.
John b. 1839 married Mary mcElgunn
They had nine children. (then the list goes on, but only names eight, so if there is another one, I don't know who it is.)

James b. 1874
Rosemary b. 1877
Jack b. 1880
Katherine b. 1881
Peter b. 1884
Bartholomew b. 1891
Mary Ann b. 1894
Edward b. 1897

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Uriah A. McManus is my GGG Grandfather. His first wife was Mary C. Gregory. Richard C. McManus is one of their sons. He is my GG Grandfather. Samuel McManus and Jane Funderburk are Richard C. McManus's grandparents. That makes them my GGGG Grandparents. I've been tracing this for awhile now. It's very interesting to me and I would love to know more. Most of what I've found has been on Ancestry.Com and at other places on the internet. Arant and Kennington are also family names that I don't know that much about. Sometime in the late 1800's Richard moved to Charlotte, NC. He had a large family with his wife Grace De Herradora in Charlotte. He also had a brother Samuel that lived here also. They were both business owners. When their mother Mary Gregory passed away their father Uriah married a woman named Exie and had more children. I believe my grandfather Richard had a brother that was a doctor and one that was a dentist. My Grandmother had also told me this when I was growing up. The family was very large all the way from Taxahaw, Lancaster, Buford, Anson, to Monroe to Charlotte. I remember a GG Aunt that was on the McManus side that lived in Monroe. Her name was Delia. Someone in the Funderburk Family from years ago moved to Gaston Cty and married people from there. If anyone knows about this information I just posted please let me know. I know there are still a lot of McManus's and Funderburk's in SC in the same area of where they started back in the early 1700's
address change: rjcj68@gmail.com
The parents of Anna McManus were James and Mary (I???? cannot read the last name)McManus who were born in Ireland; where I do not know. They are listed in the 1860 Census in Little Gun Powder, Md along with Anna who was 6 months old in the July 1860 census; born in Md Dec 25, 1859.
I have also discovered her middle name was Margaret; so the Anna Marie may have been a baptismal name. The family was Catholic. Anna was a resident in the House of the Good Shepherd in the 1880 Baltimore as her parents had died. Any siblings are unknown to me.
After the death of John Peter Schmidt(1897), she married (1905) John Upton Bears. She remained in the Baltimore area until her death Dec 24th, 1927.
Any help with discovering who James and Mary McManus were is appreciated.

Where you will find James McManus who had a son, called Patrick McManus, who's birth date was 12 March 1853, & had at least one nephew with the same name born in 1883, so it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that your pat & mine could be related

HI, I am looking for information on a Helen McManus b about 1900 to John McManus and Agnes Armstrong. Helen married John Mowat Fulton June 4, 1920. They lived at 95 Govan Road, Govan Scotland (according to the marriage records). They had at least 1 daughter Annie Mowat Mcmenemy Fulton born August 23, 1920. I am assuming that the pregnancy is why they got married since Annie was born 2 months after the marriage. According to her birth records Annie was born at a nurses home on Merryland Street. Annie would be my Aunt. Any info on her would be greatly appreciated.

Yes Michelle. Owen Bernard McManus Jr (Owney) was my father. He passed away in 1979. My name is Michael W. McManus and I am 49yo living in Los Angeles. I believe you corresponded with my brother Brendan some time ago and we thank you for all the info that you provided. I have been looking into my family history and as such have all of Brendan's previous work. I believe your Grandfather Lawrence L McManus was the younger brother to my Grandfather Owen B McManus Sr which would make our fathers first cousins and us third(?) cousins. Did Lawrence L stay in touch with Owen B Sr? He passed away in 1964 in Florida. I think I see that Lawrence L may have had a twin sister Margaret who died in infancy. Is that true? I have so many questions about Owen Sr and his wife Elsie Clark who supposedly died when my dad was very young. I would love to speak to you if you're receptive. I am only on this ancestry.com thing for a free trial and may not be checking it much thereafter. So please call me. My phone number is 310-860-1849. My email is michaelwmcmanus@gmail.com. By the way, before I was born, the doctors thought my mother (Marylou) was having a girl and I was to be named Michelle. Ha! I will very much look forward to hearing from you.
All my best,
Michael McManus

I found a McManus geneology which said Andrew McManus b. 1782 was the son of John McManus b. in 1760 cecil co ., Maryland, and Elizabeth? John was born in Cecil Co. Maryland and died in Maryland. John was the son of ?? Mcmanus and Elizabeth Cambell. I never recerched it further

Thomas McManus son of Andrew McManus and Mary Owen is the line I was following.

Hi Darryl,

delighted to get your reply - what you say would mean that we're distant cousins, I guess.

I visited Edward's grave in Singleton a couple of months ago and was sad that he died so relatively young.

I've been trying to trace Margaret, Edward's wife, as I was interested to know why she wasn't buried in Singleton along with your g. g. g. (?) grandmother, Margaret Murphy, must have been a strong and courageous woman to have made the trip all the way up to the Gwydir at the age she would have been then, and especially given what roads and transport would have been like at the time. It looks to me as though she may have lived with - or near - Catherine Mary (McManus) and John (Gainen), and I suspect that she may also be buried in the Gainen family cemetery at Upper Horton. Again, I am only guessing here, and could be wrong about that.

It seems (also somewhat sadly) that Barney and Annie (my g.g.g. McManus grandparents) didn't live long once they moved to the New England (Moonbi near Tamworth?), but I feel very proud of the large family that all the orignal 4 McManus brothers were responsible for, our good selves included.

Kind regards also,

Gillian

Hi Darryl,

delighted to get your reply - what you say would mean that we're distant cousins, I guess.

I visited Edward's grave in Singleton a couple of months ago and was sad that he died so relatively young.

I've been trying to trace Margaret, Edward's wife, as was interested to know why she wasn't buried in Singleton along with your g. g. g. (?) grandfather. It seems that most of the family left Singleton and moved up to the New England en masse some time after 1860 - at least from what I've been able to ascertain so far ...

Your g. g. g. grandmother must have been a strong and courageous woman to have made the trip all the way up to the Gwydir at the age she would have been then and especially given what transport would have been like then!
Hi Gilliam

I am descended from one of the other brothers - Edward. My grandfather is Parkey James McManus.

Bernard's side of the family ended up at Hillgrove, Armidale, Tamworth & Moree - so I believe.

Regards

Darryl Withers
