Same with me! Jimmy won't let me put anything in the brochure I'm making for the Chisholm reunion that we can't support with facts. That info had to come from somewhere, but I can't find it.

Here are my notes I posted in my Family Tree (Ancestors of Zack Chapman and Inez Eveleigh) that I have obtained over my years of research. A copy of the Pension Applicaton (from the Chesterfield County GS newsletter) is also at my tree under James McMillan, Sr. I am descended through 2 sons (James Jr. and John) of James and Rachel McMillan and grew up in Chesterfield County near the old homeplace of John McMillan and his wife Lydia Jane Geer.

The Revolution War Pension Application for James McMillan and subsequent applications by his children and his grandchildren was published in the Summer 2000 Chesterfield District Chroncile. When Congress approved pensions for former Revolution Soldiers, James applied for his in the Court of Common Pleas. Later, Congress approved pensions for widow's of Revolutionary War Soldiers. However, his wife Rachael died before receiving any of her benefits. As a result, Rachael's surviving children applied for the benefits due Rachael's estate. This ultimately led to the children of a deceased daughter of James and Rachael to apply for the benefits that would be due to their mother's estate. Thus giving in one file, three generations of the McMillan family. Application was dated March 4, 1834 in Chesterfield County, SC, and sworn acquaintances were Joseph Ellerbe, James Ellerbe, John Geer, and Aaron Copeland.

James's declaration shows a typical migration pattern. He was born February 10, 1753 in Scotland. He came to the colonies with his parents about 1766 arriving at the port of Wilmington, North Carolina. He resided in Cumberland County, NC until after the Revolutionary War had commenced. Later, he relocated to Anson County, NC near the state line, where he was drafted into militia service. He was at the Battle of Camden, August 16, 1780, where the patriots were defeated under General Gates. Upon returning home, he married Rachael Chisholm in 1781 or 1782 in Montgomery County, NC. Afterwards, he moved across the state line into Chesterfield County, SC. After James and Rachael relocated to Chesterfield County, he enlisted for a 2 1/2 year's term of service. At the battle of Eutaw Springs September 8, 1781, he received a bayonet wound in the thigh. During the War, when James was away, Rachael was robbed on two or three occasions by the Tories, sources stating that on one of those occasions, all the bedclothes were taken as well as all her wearing apparel, all the while, a Tory standing over her with sword drawn threatening to kill her if she said a word. James and Rachael lived the remainder of their lives raising their family on their land on Thompson Creek. James was illiterate and unable to read.

From "SC Revolutionary War Selected Final Pension Payment Vouchers 1818-1864" for Charleston, SC:

James McMillan - Chesterfield District, SC. 5 May 1837, James McMillan (x his mark) former private of calvary, resident of this district for more than 50 years and previous thereto of Cumberland County, NC, appoints Robert Martin attorney to collect pensions due from 4 Sept 1836 to 4 March 1837. Charleston, 20 June 1837, collected $50.00.

Rachel McMillan - Chesterfield District, SC. 14 Feb 1853. Sarah Purvis (x her mark), Mary Owens (x her mark), John McMillan (signature), and James McMillan (signature), residents of this district for (blank) years, only surviving children of Rachel McMillan, late pensioner and widow of James McMillan (former private calvary), appoint William S. Cochran attorney to collect arrears due from 18 Aug 1837 to 4 March 1841 and from 4 March 1843 to 25 Oct 1844, the day of her death. Charleston, 19 Feb 1853, collected $362.16, $100.00, and $64.08.

Per the "Miscellaneous Abstracts from Pre-Civil War Cheraw, SC Newspapers" by James Pigg (published 1996):

Sheriff's Sales - On writs of Fieri Facias will be sold before the Court House door on the first Monday and Tuesday in April next within the legal hours, the following property: Acres of land more or less whereon the defendant resides on the south side of Thompson's Creek adjoining the lands of John Pervis & John McColman, at the suit of the State of SC versus John McMullan (military fines). March 11, 1840

State Land Grants given to James McMillan in Chesterfield:

150 acres granted on May 6, 1816. Book 60, page 379.

31 acres granted on Dec. 6, 1813. Book 58, page 340.

James McMullin granted 100 acres in Cheraw on May 3, 1790. Book 27, page 269.
My cousin Jimmy just found an article in Chesterfield about Rachel and James...very interesting, about what happened to them during the Civil War. It was submitted by Simone and I tried to call her (is she still on Ancestry?) to get more info. I'm still trying to find out how we know that Murdock was married to Flora McPherson. I have a doc. that this wife signed (x'd) Mary Chisholm in 1785. Any help welcome.

She married my GGrandfather, Arthur Dyson and had four children, Ella May, Elsie, Christine and my Grandfather, Mack Wellington Dyson. I believe they lived in Ontario, Canada, possibly in Saulte Ste. Marie. My GGrandmother had a brother, Russell. That is all I know about her. If anyone has any information on any of these people it would be greatly appreciated, as I am new at this. Thank you!

Probably not connected, but my paternal grandmother was Sarah Jane Fleming who married Manilas (Nilas) McMillan in the late 1800's possibly in Iowa. Their children were Charles Wesley and Donna McMillan. I'm just trying to learn how to navigate this site.

Does anyone have any knowledge and information on the descendants of John McMillan and Janet Fleming of Campbeltown, Scotland? The couple that I am seeking information may have been married in Campbeltown on August 1, 1778 and then immigrated to Baltimore, Maryland about 1785. Now most of this is just guess work on my part, but I just maybe correct in my theory. Can anyone shed more light on this couple and their children? It looks like this couple may have had the following children: James, b. Oct 23, 1780 in Campbeltown; Agnes, b. Mar 6, 1783 in Campbeltown; and Isabella, b. March 5, 1786 in Baltimore, Maryland. Like I say, this is mostly second guessing built on facts, intuitive feelings and speculation.

Betty,

Contact me by email, you will find it at my users page on Family Tree Maker. I have reports posted there on my family ancestors, including the McMillan's. I to am descendant from john and Marion on my mothers side of the family. My line comes down from John to Andrew to Andrew to James Emory to William Granville to Margaret Elizabeth to me. The url for my users page is: http://www.familytreemaker.com/users/w/e/l/Claude-E-Wells/ please feel free to review and use any info that can give you solid clues for tracing the family. And feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I have been contacted by many descendants of john and Marion and some have been very generious with their info. I am not sure where you live, but there is a lady in Grayson County, VA, also a descendant of John and marion who has the family bible from John and Marion. She is active with the historical society there and her daughter has what is reportedly the trunk John and Marion used when they came to America. They ladies last name is Wells, ironically enough but I believe from a different branch of the family than mine the Wells' were all over the place like rabbits in the early settlement of the colonies and VA especially. Also if you do a search for emails check for Barara Rio in VA she is a great source of data and verified info. I do not have her email address, my system crashed several times and I have lost her email address, I believe if you check for Rio in VA you can find her in Faitfax I believe.

Good Luck and please contact me!

Claude

My gg grandfather Andrew Jackson McMillan left Allegheny county, NC in the 1880's and headed out West to Colorado. My family still lives in Colorado.

I found Claude E. He was also in contact with a geneologist in Scotland trying to find their parents. Perhaps if you have cousins in Ashe County you know some of the stories that have been passed down about John and Marion. How Marion and John eloped to America, how Marion went to the beds of her family members the night they left, put a candle to up to their faces so she could see them one more time before she left.

I was amazed to hear that those stories have survived for two hundred years.

Anyways, I hope I haven't missed you.
Marguerite L. McMillan, b.1901, dau of Alexander/Bridget, lived Gogebic Co., MI

I have an original Cabinet Card photograph of “Marguerite L. McMillan – May 17, 1902”, which I’d like to get back to descendants or family members. Photo was taken in Ironwood (Gogebic Co.) MI and shows a baby about 6-8 months old in a christening gown.

I found Marguerite listed as “Margaret” in the Ironwood (Gogebic Co.) MI 1910 census, showing her age as 9. She was daughter of Alexander McMillan, 50; and Bridget, age 38.

Get back to me at margerice@prodigy.net if you are related to Margaret McMillan.

Dallas Gilbert McMillen & Rebecca McMillen Whalen of Chicago /Cook Co

Cook County Marriage Records, Record #268638 dated 14 Oct 1897, Mrs Rebecca McMillan to John Whelan; - - -
Cook County Marriage Records: MCMILLEN, DALLAS G, m. WHELEN, BARBARA A, on 02/09/1888 / record #00122238, COOK Co IL - - - Dallas G is Gilbert McMullen of PA & IA; and Mrs Rebecca McMillan is the widow of Dallas Gilbert's brother Isaac McMullen also of PA & IA; they all made a short stop in Indian on the way to Iowa and Illinois; Isaac and Gilbert both married women from Cass Co, IN; Gilbert married Ann Henry daughter of Joseph Henry; Isaac married Rebecca Shuey, daughter of John Shuey also of PA. - - - (I have the ancestry of these McMillen)- - - I cannot find either of these couples, singularly or as a married couple after their marriage date; I cannot find them in any of the Cook County death indices, and not in the Iowa death and cemetery records;- - - My main purpose in this search is to locate a death and burial for Rebecca Shuey McMillen Whalen; and possibly a death and burial for Dallas Gilbert [Gilbreth] McMullen /McMillen; - - - Another question I have is whether or not John Whelan and Barbara A Whelen are related and how they are related; where they may be buried also.- - - Have McMillen info, will share - - -
Christine McMillan born about 1860 in Canada

Searching for information about Christine McMillan, born about 1860 in Canada, and her family. Christine was recorded by the 1880 U.S. Census as living in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, where she taught music and boarded with the family of Malcolm and Mary Josie (both born in Canada). The 1880 Census record indicates both of Christine’s parents were born in Canada.

About 1882, Christine married John Fremont Blake, a lawyer then living in Owatonna, Minnesota. Shortly after marrying, Christine and John apparently removed to Webster, Day County, South Dakota. Christine and John had the following children, all born in Webster:

(i)	Beatrice Gertrude, b. June 13, 1883;
(ii)	Louis Millan , b. 1884;
(iii)	John Fremont, Jr., May 19, 1885;
(iv)	Alice, b. 1887; and
(v)	Leo Alexander, b. Oct. 1, 1894.

The family removed to Minneapolis, Minnesota about 1895. Christine died there January 11, 1901 of “chronic gastric catarrh” and was buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Minneapolis. We believe Christine was Catholic.
