Surnames: McMILLIN LAWSON
Ellen C. McMILLIN b. 11 Mar 1844 OH m. William LAWSON (b. 7 Mar 1825 PA) on 11 Oct 1866. Census records show Ellen McMILLIN's parents as b. PA and MD. Ellen and William LAWSON lived most of their lives in Steady Run, Keokuk Co., IA near his parents, Hugh and Nancy LAWSON; William's and Ellen's children included Jennie, Hugh, Nancy and John.
Part of Ellen's lengthy obituary reads:
" Ellen McMillin was born in Port Washington, Ohio, March 11, 1844 and died in Hedrick, Iowa, June 6 1922, aged 78 years, two months and 26 days.
As a little child only four years old she left her native state and traveled by team and covered wagon to what was then the far west, reaching Keokuk County, Iowa, and settled near Martinsburg on land her father had bought from the government at $1.25 per acre. Soon after a Baptist church was organized at Martinsburg and at about 16 years of age Ellen McMillin was admitted into the fellowship of this church and was a consistent member as long as the church existed.
At the age of 22 she was married to Wm. Lawson at the home of her parents. The newly married couple went to housekeeping on a farm which her husband had purchased from the government, which continued to be her home for a long life and which she still owned at the time of her death."
The obituary goes on and I'll be glad to scan it to anyone interested. Ellen and William LAWSON are buried at Rayburn Cemetery near Hedrick, IA.
I descend through William LAWSON's brother Joseph and their parents, Hugh and Nancy LAWSON. I hope to find a McMillin family historian (or any other!) who might have information to share on my line. Photos are of particular interest.
