I work in a used book shop in Rochester, NY. We recently acquired the family Bible for Benedict P. McNair's parents, Isaac and Caroline Pierpont McNair.

We would like to return this Bible to a descendant of this couple.
I am reserching the Mcnair's of hamlet, NC. I have little information about them. I beleive my great-grand father was William A. Mcnair. His son was Willie Mcnair, married to Minnie and my mother was Rosa Lee Mcnair. I found them in the 1920 census. I would love to have the photo you have on hand to help with my reasearch. My E-mail is Tree2014co@aol.com....... Thank you advance!!........Steven Harrell

Hi,
I dont know if you got my message but I thought I would post a reply here just in case.
I have a Hugh McNair born 1878 - I am not sure if he is "your" Hugh, I have not confirmed his spouse yet. His parents were
Hugh McNair and Elizabeth Angeley - If these perents dont match I would still be interested in your information - I have loads of McNairs in my records and I would be interested to see if there is a connex perhaps with one of the other Mcnair families

McNair family history would be appreciated (Parents/grandparents, lineage of Harold R. McNair)

Harold is the father of Constance "Connie" McNair (passed ~2003), Frederick C. McNair (passed in 2011) and of another son (name escapes me). All of which were born and raised in Syracuse but moved to other parts of the country over the years (Pennsylvania)
As an aside, Frederick had a son named Steve McNair who was NOT the football player of much fame.

Thanks in advance for any info.

S.McNair
Looking for Florence McNair, father Colin and Mother McPherson

I am looking for information about my GG Grandmother Florence McNair. The only info I have about her was she was born in 1851 in Wales (and that doesn't quite seem right to me...I would think Scotland or Nova Scotia) Anyway, she married Angus McKay of Guysboro Nova Scotia and died in childbirth in Massachusetts (probably around Gloucester) Her daughter survived and was named Florence Ellen McKay.

Florence's father is suppose to be Colin McNair and her mother Nancy or Ann McPherson. I have no information on either. If anyone can help I would sure appreciate it.

Thanks
Cheryl

They all seem to be from around the Lanarkshire area.

My Great Uncle Johnnie and his wife Margaret (Peggy) lived in Utah for a number of years, but ended up back in Scotland later in life.

Any connections out there??? :-)

I also wonder, if Sarah Lee McNair is a parent or sister-in-law? I don't know anything about Needham Lee. Odd Name though.

I just found out that I have a Mary Catherine McNair b. in 1814 in North Carolina, she married Hector McNeill born in 1816 in North Carolina and in looking at different things with the help of another searcher I saw them on the 1850 census for Barbour County, Alabama.
I had noticed on that census:

1850 census Barbour County Alabama, there is a Needham G. Lee, age 25 with young family, living next door to Hector McNeil. Could he be a nephew or some relative of Sarah Lee McNair, age 45?

I was looking at Sara Lee McNair as being the mother of my
Mary Catherine McNair. Sara NcNair's maiden name was Lee. That's why I noticed Needham G. Lee, who was 25 years old in 1850.

Does he mean anything to you? An unusual name Needham!

Let me check my records. My McNair family are also living in Barbour County AL in 1850. My ancestor was Tirquill McNair son of Sarah LEE and Gilbert McNair aka AM McNair. Tirquill was on the 1850 Census and had just got married to Maceadonia CROCKER. He married second to Widow Amanda SPEERS in 1865/66. Her maiden name might have been PRICE. What part of the census were ur ancestors listed on?

JMGSR

The 1850 Barbour Co., AL census list Sarah "Lee" McNair who, I believe was married to Gilbert McNair. Her neighbors are her and Gilbert's family. I'm interested in Mary McNeill, at the bottom of the page. She is my ggg grandmother & her maiden name is McNair. My gg grandmother's death certificate list her mother's name as Catherine McNair, born in FL. So is Mary or Catherine or Mary Catherine McNair a sister to Gilbert or could she be a daughter? The census says she's born abt. 1814 in NC. Can anyone place her in this McNair family? She was married to Hector (or Rector) McNeal & wound up in Lavaca Co., TX.

Craig, thank you for the clarification. After I posted the quiry I saw the post that detailed James McNair's will. It was indeed a gold mine of info. In your research have you come across any concrete connection to my John McNair's, Turkeyfoot's son, wife? I saw one post that named Sarah Musgrove of Maryland. Married 1802. That is doable with the first daughter being born in 1803(maryland or PA). I am looking for John's death date. If you are correct and he is alive in Preston, WV in 1830, that may be the place to look. Also....any idea what the families official faith is?

Pam

Re: Descendants of Turkeyfoot John McNair?

Hi,

There is a lot of confusion regarding the John McNair/McNear who married Sarah Martin due to a single record which I used to find easily on Ancestry but which now eludes me. It was part of an index of marriages, and I believe that it erroneously led people to conclude that Sarah Martin (b. 1803), the youngest daughter of Daniel Martin (1748-1850) married the much older John McNair (b. c. 1780), who was a son of Turkeyfoot John McNair. This John was a younger brother of David (b. 1775), and it is this older John who was the father of Eli McNier. The John who was the son of David McNair (and a nephew of the John who was Eli's father), was certainly born in 1795, not 1798 as usually reported. I located his birth record, in which all names were badly misspelled but which clearly shows he is the grandson of Conrad Silbaugh, the father of David McNair's wife. It is this John McNair who moved from Addison Twp., PA to Preston Co., VA around 1821, after his first wife died. He is the John McNair who married Sarah Martin, the daughter of his neighbor in Preston Co., the ancient Daniel Martin. By 1850, this John had to be dead, since his wife, Sarah, was living with her son, Daniel McNair/McNear, and using what had to be her second married name, Draper.

Both a John McNear, Sr. (p.35) and a John McNear, Jr. (p.33) appear in the 1830 Frederal Census for Preston Co., VA. In earlier times, the Sr. and Jr. designations were not limited to father and son relationships but often were used to keep straight the older and younger members of the same extended family. I suspect that the John McNear, Sr. is the person of interest to you, the uncle of my ancestor, John Jr., husband of Sarah Martin. My family, who descend from David McNair/McNear/McNeer generally spelled their name McNear.

And, to answer your specific question about Tukeyfoot John's descendants, I have lists that I have received from others, as well as lists of my own. There are a huge number of descendants, however, since Turkeyfoot John had eight children, all of which had many children of their own.

I hope this is of some help.

Craig Englund

Descendants of Turkeyfoot John McNair?

I hope someone can help me. Does anyone have a list of Turkeyfoot John McNair’s Descendants? ’From what I have read on line one of his son’s, David, . His son, John. married a Sarah Martin in Preston, WV. This is what I am looking for. I have a Eli McNier b. 1820 PA in my tree. He and his siblings ended up in Darby Twp. Union Ohio. According to a number of ancestry trees his parents were John McNear and Sarah Martin. There is no sign of John in Ohio, however, there is a Sarah McNeer named as head of household in 1830 or 40. 1850 she is gone and I cannot find any record of her death. She is NOT buried in the family plot in Mitchell Cemetery in Darby twp, Ohio.

HI everyone,

I'm still having real problem with the Armstrong, McNair, Forguer situation. You would think that somewhere there would be some information on where and when George Armstrong married Ann McNair. If he had a fight with Samuel Forquer and Samnuel died, there must be a place, year and they must have buried Samuel someplace. I can't find George's burial place either. This is a very frustrating situation and I thank all of you who have contacted me at home. If anyone has additional information they have come across, please contact me here on Roots web or at mmnsea@aol.com

James C. McNair & Mary T. Brant

James C. McNair lived in Philadelphia moved to Maryland married Mary T. Brant 1849.Later family is said to have moved to Lincoln,Nebraska.

According to a McNair book it says James C. McNair had a brother John McNair from Philadelphia, Charles McNair from Philadelphia owned a shoe store there- I believe this is my connection, Kate McNair from Philadelphia.
Has anyone heard of them or know who the parents are? I would greatly appreciate knowing.Thank you,Rose

McNairs from Ireland to NY 1836

My family of McNairs arrived in NYC June 14 1836 and I can only trace the one who married a McAllister. The others are Robert born 1809, James born 1812, Sarah born 1825, Jane born 1818, and Sarah (perhaps the mother) born 1797. I have looked and looked and cannot figure what happened to these people. I know James was in Brooklyn in 1852 as he witnessed Alex McAllister's naturalization. Is Brooklyn a difficult area to research?
