Many Happy Greetings: David McNew, s/o George McNew and Amelia Hargis married Ann "Nancy" SMITH, as stated on the death certificzte of their child, Samuel, who died in Pulaski Co VA. I suspect she MIGHT have been a sister to Nancy Smith/Smyth who married Wm. Galliher and to Abram Smith (2 or 3 wives, including Sarah Linticum, last wife, mar 1844). "Nancy", of coure was almost excusively a nickname for Ann/Anne until the very late 1800s. Jack Hockett tlas101@aol.com

Re: McNew Family in Ripley County, Indiana

Our family traces back to my Gr. Great Grandfather 'Conrad Alonzo Busker'. He was born in 1827 and traveled here from Westfalia (now part of Germany, then part of Prussia). He married twice. His second marriage was to a Mary J. McNew who was born Indiana in 1847. We have no information on who her parents were but we know she came from a very large family, it sounds like it is very possible she is the Mary Jane McNew in your family.

Things I know about Mary J. McNew. She originally married a Hiram Durham and had 5 children. James W. Durham, Hamilton Durham, John Henry Durham, Minnie Elizabeth Durham, George Washington Durham.

Mary went on to Mary a man named Lloyd V. Prine, afterwards she married a man named Sholton (not sure if it's his first or last name), then married Randolph Speaker and finally married Conrad Alonzo Busker (my gr. great grandfather).

Mary and Conrad had identical twin boys (which run in the Busker family Calvin and Alvin Busker. Calvin was my Great Grandfather. His brother Alvin died at the age of 19.
Mary is said to have died in 1926. According to Conrad's youngest son from his first marriage (Thomas), Mary was a very kind and loving step mother and didn't mind raising 14 children (Conrad had 7 when she married him and she had 5...they then had 2 together), because she came from a very large family and had grown up helping with her younger siblings.

I can't be sure that Mary J. McNew (from my family) is indeed Mary Jane McNew. But the dates and general location match, and several of the names she used for her children match Mary Jane's siblings names. Do you know anything else at all about Mary Jane? (round about year she would have been born?)

~Angela Dawn Busker Meyer St. Peters, MO

P.S. I know we have photo's of Conrad, but I'm not sure if there are photo's of Mary or not. I will check with my Aunts and see what they can find out for me. Most of our family line was traced by my Father (the Great Grandson of Mary and Conrad) who passed away in 2000.

Zedikiah McNew

I am decended from John Brushcreek McNew through his son James and grandson Duff. My grandmother was Elizabeth daughter of Duff and his second wife Ethel Monica Dickey. In my research I have found several McNew men named Zedikiah. I am trying to make a connection between one Zedikiah McNew who was a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. Sometime after 1889 he left that denomination and, as I understand it became a Presbyterian. Does anyone know of this Zedikiah and how he is related to my line?
Thanks in advance.
Ron Watterly rwatterly@yahoo.com

I was able to compare 26 markers that each of you have tested in common. That's not a lot; it would be better to be able to compare around ten more (and the more, over that, the better). However, you had a difference in your markers of two. I know on the FamilyTreeDNA's (FTDNA) 25 marker test, a distance of 2 is considered a match. If Ryan upgrades to 67 markers one of these days, that will give me a few more markers to compare against Charles McNew's results. Also, FTDNA does offer a discount to people ordering their own test, if that person have already tested with another company. There are men out there who test with more than one company, just in order to have access to different databases. I don't know if that is something that would interest your wife and Charles, or not. It would definitely give us better results than me doing the comparison myself. But I stand by my belief that Charles and Ryan are a match to each other, and a match to the McNutt family. Anyway, I will send you both more about my analysis, and also a comparison against the other McNew men soon. I guess since none of them match you, they are really McNews--they'll be happy to hear that! hahaha.

Ryan, I am guessing that he did NOT test with FTDNA, because we have three men in our project, and NONE of them match to this man in the entire database. Such a shame; it makes it so hard to compare when men have tested with other companies. But hopefully this man tested enough of the same markers that are tested with FTDNA that I can figure out which McNew in our project he is related to.....if any!

This is great news Kent!!
I administer the FamilyTreeDNA (FTDNA) McNew surname project. If he tested with FTDNA, it's just a simple matter of going to his personal myFTDNA page and joining the McNew surname project. If he tested with another company, I would need you to send me the marker and haplogroup results and then I will manually compare them to the people who have tested with FTDNA, and then let you know if there are any matches. We don't have many project members yet, so they will be delighted to learn of another McNew male who has tested!!
My email is basenjiluvr at msn dot com [Just use @ in place of "at" and . in place of "dot"]
Susan

Yes Carolyn, I am definitely interested in the file. Can you access my email address without me directly posting it on here?
I have the line as being George McNew & wife Eva (Ricker)(Smithers) McNew, then their son John H. McNew who married Elizabeth (James). Elizabeth's parents were Jonas K. James and Rachel (Kennard). John and Elizabeth's son was Clinton.
I am related to Elizabeth through her brother Thomas K. James.
I am related to John H. McNew through his brother Alexander McNew. Alexander's daughter Eva McNew married Thomas K. James.
I have Zola in my database as being the daughter of George Franklin McNew. He was another son of Alexander McNew and wife Maria Ellen (Apple). So, you and I are closely related. My grandfather knew George (who was his uncle) and somewhere in my paper files I have a copy of the newspaper clipping of George's obit. Here is the typed version I have in my Family Tree Maker files:
G.F. McNew Dies; Was Almost 100. Knightstown: George Frank McNew, 99, retired farmer in this vicinity, died this morning at a nursing home near Middletown after an illness of two years. Mr. McNew had wanted to live 100 years, an ambition he would have achieved in February.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Lola Hackleman of Shirley; a son, Harry McNew of Knightstown; 11 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.
Three members of his family had preceded him in death--his wife Linnie in 1953, a son Cecil in 1956 and a daughter Mrs. Zola Dalrymple in 1938.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Butcher Funeral Home in Knightstown with Rev. Byron Leaser officiating. Burial will be in Glen Cove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Butcher Funeral Home afer 1 p.m. Sunday.
Susan

Seeking Information about Isaac and Joseph McNew

Sandra Goodnight and Ben McNew (and many others) have been searching for Isaac McNew’s parents.

We have found no definite link to Isaac McNew’s parents. Isaac (according to the U.S. Census in both 1860 and 1870) was born in Kentucky in 1839. We cannot find him in any other census. In the 1860 Census, Isaac was living (probably with two sisters and a brother-in-law) in Mountain Township in Van Buren County, Arkansas. There was a Joseph McNew who showed up on the 1851 tax rolls* of Van Buren County, Arkansas, and Joseph might be the father of Isaac. Consider the following:

Joseph McNew (birth date unknown but thought circa 1800-1810) married Sallie Davis (born 11/12/1808 in WV) in Daviess County , Kentucky, on December 15, 1835 (some places show this marriage date as December 15, 1837).** Sallie (Sally) Davis was a sister to Felix Davis who married Kissiah (sometimes Kizia) McNew (a sister to Joseph McNew) on July 15, 1837, in Daviess County, Kentucky.*** About 1847, Felix and Kissiah moved their family to Arkansas, and on the 1850 Census for Van Buren County, AR, Felix, Kissiah, and four children are living in Cadron Township. Thus, Joseph (on the 1851 Van Buren County tax rolls) and Sallie Davis McNew were probably nearby. We can find no listing of children, nor much of anything else, for Joseph and Sallie Davis McNew.

They (Joseph and Sallie Davis McNew) were married in KY 1-4 years before Isaac McNew was born in Ky in 1839. They (Joseph & Sallie) evidently moved to Van Buren County, AR, before 1851, and Isaac McNew is in Van Buren County (age 21) in 1860. Same last name; same state of origin ( KY); marriage dates, etc., fit in; and Joseph and Isaac are living in same county in Arkansas.

These data only point to a possibility. They are the only indications we have found so far of Isaac McNew’s parents. Interestingly, Isaac McNew named one of his daughters Josephine.

If anyone has information about this Isaac or this Joseph McNew, please make us aware of it. Sandra Goodnight. Ben McNew.

*See: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~arvanbur/cocourt/1849.html
** Some records show Joseph A. McVar (thought to be just a mistake). There is another Joseph McNew living in Illinois who was a client of Abraham Lincoln in 1850, but this is not our Joseph.
***Some records list Kezia as McNett (again, thought to be just a mistake).

If you are still looking, I believe I am Zedekiah's great granddaughter. My grandfather was Dewey L. MacNew, the youngest son born in 1898 in Indiana. Dewey lived with his older sister Leona and her husband Albert Herbert in Trenton, NJ during the 1930 census. Dewey's name was spelled MacNew on that census. That is how his name was spelled on my father's birth certificate. Any information about Dewey and his family would be appreciated.
