Hi Lorrainep900,

Which part of NZ are your McQuilkens from?

I am afraid I am probably not much help to you, but I have recently discovered that my great aunt married a McQuilken (first name unknown as yet). My great aunt died in Oamaru, South Island NZ in 1976 aged 78yrs. This was her 2nd marriage. 1st husband had passed away and her death record states she was a widow. Her ashes are in Dunedin, South Island Cemetery

Thanks for the information. I was aware that my Grandfather and his brother married two sisters but I was not aware of the details. Also I knew that they lived on the same street (Castleroe) in Coleraine co Londonderry - I used to visit them as a child during school holidays.

Also one of my father's cousin's son (Jim Platte or Platt?) who must have been a grandson of William played in goal for Middleborough during the mid 1970's when they were in the English 1st Division.

Jonathon
I have some info on your family. Your grandfather John ( 1896,1897) married Maud Montgomery 1920, his brother William married Mauds sister Susan 1922. Their fathers name was John ( 1866/67) married to Letitia Matthews. They are in 1901 census in Castleroe co.londonderry.
Johns fathers name was Thomas, my great grandfather Thomas James fathers name was Thomas also, so I think John and Thomas James may have been brothers. They lived in the same area, my father Jack came from Castleroe and he knows John and Williams children, of which he says he is related.

Hello Jane;
I believe the names are related. If you can imagine a NIR accent saying McQuilkin, you could see how it could be spelled phonetically as McCulkin. Check the following site for more info on the name. http://myweb.cableone.net/cjwitchypoo/wilname.html

I have a little info on a Alexander McQuilkin b. Strabane 1828. Any Alexanders in your family? There's also several McQuilkin families from nearby Donegal and Derry, some of whom have Thomas's in the family.

So far in my search no one on earth has heard of the name McCulkin. Have you. I have a copy of his trial records dated 1837 and it does state McCulkin. Do you have any suggestions on why i can not find any other family members.
I really need some help if you dont mind i would appreciate it.
Thank you.
My new email address is:
jtmc@iprimus.com or
jtmc_1064@hotmail.com

Was I wrong, and I highly recommend your site to anybody with McQuilken connections NO MATTER THE SPELLING.

When I started researching, I did my married name first thinking it would take me forever because it is not a very common name.....it took me about six weeks, to get all the way back to the 1600's.......then I started on my maiden name, I honestly at some points with it thought our family must have fallen out of the sky.....they were, are a closed mouthed bunch, and can hide very well, then I got onto Scotland'sPeople was still Scots Origins in these days! So I learned a valuable lesson the other day, to navigate properly!

In between times when I would get fed up with McQuilken
I would research the other names I am interested in, guess it is a never ending hobby!

Christine

Thanks Andy,

For being patient and seeing me through this, I have researched my maiden name for so long now, when I started this in 1997 no one was researching McQuilken really.....couldn't find anything anywhere really, Alexander with the Hunter saga was a hard one to solve......my dad always said his Grandma's name was Mirn.....that was all he knew.....but the Uncle Andrew who died WW1 had the middle name Hunter, that gave me a clue, it was an uphill battle the whole way.....
I have a very rough draft of my McQuilken's on my computer, if you would like a copy of it I will send it to you privately.....you can let me know via the message board.

Thanks again.
Christine

So she couldn't have got married in 1811

George's year of birth in the 1881 census is 1833:

Dwelling:	8 Dock Street
Census Place:	Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source:	FHL Film 0203668 GRO Ref Volume 644-10 EnumDist 84 Page 1
Marr	Age	Sex	Birthplace
George MC QUILKEN	M	48 M	Ireland
Rel:	Head
Occ:	Iron Ship Caulker
Jessie MC QUILKEN	M	48 F	Ireland
Rel:	Wife
George MC QUILKEN	U	24 M	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Ship Carpenter
Sarah MC QUILKEN	U	20 F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daughter
Occ:	Sewing Machinist
Alexander MC QUILKEN	U	18 M	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Ship Carpenter
Jessie MC QUILKEN	U	16 F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daughter
Occ:	Cotton Weaver
Catherine MC QUILKEN	U	14 F	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Daughter
Occ:	Sewing Machinist
Thomas MC QUILKEN	U	11 M	Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel:	Son
Occ:	Scholar

Someone has obviously seen some record for George and Sarah Stewart (I really doubt there were two couples with exact names) but has perhaps mis-transcribed 1831 as 1811

The fact that Sarah's age was given as 65 doesn't mean she was actually 65 she was probably a bit older.

I don't have easy access to the 1871 census for Glasgow but will make a point of finding the family at some point.

My reasoning for thinking that George and Joseph had a sister stems from Alice Steen McQuilken's death being reported by a "Nephew-in-Law" George Wilson. There was also a James Wilson who witnessed George and Jessie's marriage.

Even Alexander's marriage to Ellen Hunter in 1890 was witnessed by a James Wilson.

Wilson is a very common name but there are too many cropping up to be coincidental.
