I think we have a connection. I have a James and Agness McTear both born around 1814 in Ireland (possibly County Down) who moved over to Scotland, probably in the mid 1830's. Their first child was Francis born about 1839 in Glenluce, Wigtownshire but all their other children, including my ancestor James McTear (1847), were born in Kirkinner. You say in your post that your ggrandfather was born in 1849, so that must be Samuel McTear. Hope to hear from you, Simon

Hi There. I am trying to trace a William McTier born Durris Kincardinshire 1847 to Anne Lowe Skinner and de facto partner James McTier. He was known as William McTier Skinner until his christening in 1869 following his mother's death. I have a marriage to Jessie Wilson Philip and two children Jessie Ann 1876 and John William 1878 both born Scotland but have not managed to locate in any census or immigration documents. Wondering if you can make any links to your McTier Family.

Norah Skinner

Hi Alex - Looking back through the McTier messages - I notice that I sent a message in May 2004, concerning my side of the McTier Family (Francis McTier and Margaret Boyd). After the death of my mother earlier this year I found a rather obscure note which included the names of Orr, Stewart and Davidson. My question therefore is do you know of any family connection and for that matter where do you live.
John McTier

Hello James McTier - in response to your interesting reply of 11/11/05. My grandfather James McTier would have been born in the vicinity of 1870 - in the Belfast area of Northern Ireland. He travelled to Australia in 1925 - therefore would have had no reference to the southern states of North America. However if you do have some information that may be of interest - I would be glad to receive whatever you may be able to glean from any of your relatives. Did you know that there is a town in Canada (Ontario) east of Geogian Bay, called Mactier. I understand that the name was taken from the Station Master of the a little town in about 1905.
Will be pleased to make further contact
John C McTier

Hi Moira,
All I can tell you is that William McTier was born at Barlea farm in Old Luce in Wigtownshire on 28/10/1816. His parents were Peter McTier and Anne Euphame Douglas. His parents moved to Colmonell in Ayrshire with their family some time in the 1830s and William married Mary McClelland in Colmonell on 2/6/1839. I do not know when he died.
Best wishes,
Eric Martin

Hello Eric,
I suspect you may be able to help me. I am researching the McClelland family of Colmonell and Mary McClelland b 1806 and died 1892 in Colmonell married a William McTier in Colmonell in 1839. I dont have his birth or death but suspect you may have him on your tree, or have a shrewd idea which one he is. I 'd love any clues you can give about him, his occupation or any offspring. I'm happy to purchase stuff from Scotlandspeople but need a little bit more to go on if I'm not to waste time and money!
Moira

Hi John, I'm not sure exactly why the spelling of McTier changed in my family tree, but I do remember my Grandfather(born Thomas McTear 10/3/1915) telling me about his GGrandfather changing the spelling of the name because 2 men called John McTier worked on the same farm and this caused confusion over the wage packets(!) so the spelling was changed to McTear to suit the farm owner. Not sure of the exact details as I was just a young boy when he told me this and perhaps I have the story muddled. What I do know is that most of John McTier's children were called McTier on their birth certificates if born before 1867 and McTear thereafter. Most of these children with McTier on birth certificate have the name McTear on death and marriage certificates. I would imagine the reason the name changes so often in my family tree line, is because other people always miss-spell the name even today with my own name. I dont think people like to see an 'I' before an 'E'. So far I haven't came across a Francis McTier, but I will keep an eye out for this name in future. Ballantrae, Ayrshire, is in the south-east corner of Scotland, most of my family tree centre's on this area.

Andrew - I have a question for you - you say that the spelling of the surname McTier changed around 1860. Do you know why it was changed. Also I was wondering whether you have ever heard of a Francis McTier - born around 1830 - 1845, probably in Northern Ireland. I understand that Francis McTier married a Margaret Boyd - let's say around 1865. May I also ask - where is Ballantrae. Just a few questions to start with - cause i am sure I can figure out a few more - John McTier - I live in Adelaide.

Alex Orr,
It seems that we are related! my GGGGG grandfather was also Alexander McTier(I have also seen this referred to as McTyre) who was married to Jean Maitland. I have only been researching the family tree for a few weeks and seem to have lost the trail at this stage. My GGGG grandfather was John McTier of Ballantrae who was the brother of your David McTier I believe. John McTier married Helen McIlraith, and his other siblings were Jane or Jean 5/6/1785, Jennet 17/12/1786, William 5/1/1789, Alexander may 1792, Mary 9/2/1797, Betty 1/2/1804. My name has also changed spellings along the way it first changed to McTear around 1860 then to the current spelling McTeir around 1910. Hope this is of some interest. Andy McTeir

The guy I spoke to is William Mactier. There is an Andrew Mactier in Adelaide - but over all there are not many McTier's or Mactier's living in Australia. I am trying to find info on the McTiers who lived in and close by to Belfast in the early 1900's.

I have some further information concerning the McTier Family of the mid 1800s. There was a John McTier - who died either by a lumber accident or was murdered in a waterfront incident near Quincey Mass. then there was William - who was survived by two daughters, James who travelled to Australia in 1925 and died in 1939 in Adelaide aged 70. Then there was Beatrice McTier (maiden name) and Frank McTier. James McTier married Susan Cairns and she died in Adelaide in 1948 aged 78. I am wondering if anyone has any further information on John, William, Beatrice or Frank McTier. Thankyou John C McTier

I just googled my name and came across your search for James Mactier. Indeed, I am a James Mactier and in fact AM born on Dec 3 but, in 1953. I live in Vancouver Canada but I'm not related to the branch of the family you're looking for. My grand father came over from Scotland, the Wigtownshire area near Newton Stewart on the SW Coast. He homesteaded in Manitoba. My father, David moved to the West Coast of Canada were we settled before I was born.

My grandfather's brother also settled in Ontario and became a big wig with the CPR, eventually having a town, Mactier, Ontario named after him so that the railway would go through that small town. The two brothers lost touch soon after immigrating to Canada.

There are lots of Mactiers in Australia too.

Jim

Alex,

Thanks for the prompt reply. You provided me with some very good information.

I agree that there probably is not a close connection between us, although you never know. I have found a number of McTyers in the U.S. who are more likely to be a close link to me. In addition to the African American side I spoke of, I have found records a McTyer link in Virginia dating back to the mid-1700s. From records of wills that were filed back then, I have discovered that they were slave holders. I suspect that I am a descendent of one of those slaves who was given the McTyer surname.

It is also very interesting to learn about the town in Ontario and the railroad employee for whom it was named. I'll look it up on the map and try to research it a little more.

At any rate, I am always happy to find someone with the same name spelling as mine. I feel a bond to them just because the name is so unusual. I'll continue to check this website from time to time and I would welcome the opportunity to hear from you again.

Thanks,
Charles

Charles,
One of my G-G-grandfather's sons "went abroad" and was never heard from again - perhaps that is the connection, although he spelled his name McTier. They lived in Ballantrae.
My G-grandfather, who lived in Ayr and Glasgow, was the first, in my line, to spell it McTyer and we know where all his children ended up, two in Scotland, one in Ireland and two in Australia.
The spelling was so unusual that all the McTyers in the Glasgow phone book were relatives of mine. The same in Sydney, Australia.
I guess you are Scots-African-American, but I don't see a close connection with my immediate family.
In Ontario there is a small town called McTyer and I visited it and asked about the origin of the name. I was told it was named after a senior employee of the railroad, but nobody knew any more about him.
Although I was born and educated in Scotland I now live in Canada.
Good luck, Alex

I just came across your message. I am a McTyer like your mother, and pronounce it "McTeer" (or "McTier if you prefer). I believe we would find that we are related if we could trace back far enough.

I hope this doesn't throw you for a loop, but I am African American. My parents, who both died when I was very young, were both African Americans. I know almost nothing about my father's side of the family, except that he was a musician and was born in either Detroit or somewhere in Alabama. I was told from childhood that my roots go back to Scotland, so the information you mentioned seems to fit.

I have found some relatives in Little Rock, AR and in Birmingham, AL, with strands that run into Oakland, CA and New Jersey. All are African Americans. I'm sure there is a Caucasian side to my family, as well. I, and many of the relatives I've met, have a very fair complexion and green eyes.

I'd love to hear from you so that we can discuss this further. I hope you agree that we could possibly offer each other some valuable insight into our common history. Please feel free to reply via email. I hope to hear from you soon.

I was brought up in Scotland and my Family spelled the name McTyer and pronounced it MAC-TIRE. Almost everyone else pronounced it MAC_TEER.
I would think the spellings McTeer, McTear and McTyre are all the same McTier family.

McTier, McTyer

My GGGrandfather, James McTier, born 21 Nov 1824, married Ann McIlraith on 7 Sep 1845 in Colmonell. His father David, born 1 Feb 1799 in Ballantrae, married Margaret Hadden , 22 Dec 1820, in Ballantrae.
David's father and mother were Alexander McTier and Jean Matland. And then I lost it. It would require luck or a lot of effort to find anything further.
By the way, my great-grandfather started to spell the name McTyer so my mother was a McTyer and specific in the spelling. She didn't know of the change and that slowed my research significantly.
