I've been stuck on Daniel for a bit and hope someone here can help. Daniel MEAD b. 1815ish, Corenelius MEAD b. 1826ish. I think they are brothers.

Found my Daniel in 1850 Census:
Michigan-Ottawa-Crockery
Daniel Mead 35, b. NY
Mary Mead 33, b. NY
Mary Mead 7, b. MI
Charlie Mead (my gggrandfather)4, b. MI

Living next door is a Cornelius Mead family:
Cornelius Mead 30, b. NY
Lydia Mead 30, b. NY
Lydia Mead 9, b. MI
John Mead 6, b. MI
Elizabeth Mead 2/12, b. MI

Found my Daniel Mead in 1860 Census, and have lost Cornelius entirely:
Michigan-Washtenaw-Scio
Daniel Mead 45, b. MY
Mary Mead 46, b. VT
Mary Mead 17, b. MI
Charles Mead 14, b. MI
George Mead 10, b. MI

I've found no trace of Cornelius anywhere else (NY, VT, anywhere) and am not entirely sure he's in my tree, but next door and right age/locations to be brother of Daniel. Looking for their parents as I am stuck on their line.

Thanks for any help!!

Wills might help before 1610. There are these wills for Mead/Meade in Wiltshire:

1558 John Mede of South Newton
1564 Philip Meade of Winsley, Bradford on Avon
1570 Elizabeth Mede, widow of South Newton
1571 Richard Meade, husbandman of Turleigh, Winsley, Bradford on Avon
1595 Thomas Meade, baker of Salisbury
1601 George Meade, Clerk of Tollard Royal, Wiltshire (PCC)
1612 Richard Meade of Turleigh, Winsley, Bradford, husbandman
1620 Joan Meade of Winsley, Bradford on Avon, widow
1634, Timothy Meade of Mere, husbandman

There earliest ones are transcribed on my site:
http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

Bradford on Avon is about 10 miles from West Lavington.
I have a family tree of descendants of John Mead(Mede, Meade) born in West Lavington, Wiltshire,U.K. But I do not know his wife's name. The spelling varies over the years dependant on accents and perception of clerks, particulary if persons were illiterate. I obtained information re: family between 1636 and 1807 from the Wiltshire County Records Office for the parishes of Market Lavington,West Lavington & Bishops Lavington.
If you can give me some family names from the mid 1800's to beginning of the 19th century, I may be able to assist.

Hi Daniel, how are you?

I have been searching for months for any info on Meads from Virginia and came across your message.

I am at a dead end on Abraham Mead(e), sometimes listed as Abraham Mead II. He was born about 1786 in Bedford Va, and died 08 Nov 1859 in Lawrence Ky.

I saw on your tree that there are some Meads from that part of Va, John Mead 1700-1754 and Robert Mead 1743-1825.

Would you happen to have seen anything regarding Abraham from Va? My grandfather Paul spent years going to libraries and courthouses trying to find a link past Abraham, he passed in 2005 and I am picking up the torch to finish this for him.

Here is a link to my tree, any clues would be greatly appreciated!

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/38633786/family

Sorry, none of those names match up. In my line he was born in Michigan in 1944 and passed away in Wisconsin in 1979. His father was Elmer Eugene Mead (b. 1907 in Michigan) and his mother was Clare Elizabeth Splude (b. 1908 in Michigan). Maybe our trees will line up later in research. Let's keep in touch.

Dear Pam,
I'd love to know more and dimly recall knowing there were marriages between bros and sisters; I saw joint tombstone of Abigail and Lewis in New Bedford Cemetery near Ann Arbor, MI; they died in 1862 and 65 as I recall, he fought in War of 1812. (I thought the name was "Waite" on tombstone,, with an e?) At the moment I am short of time as I'm a writer/editor on deadline; but briefly, Lewis Mead was the son of Timothy Mead III, m. Phebe Crippen (she is the Mayflower connection to our 10th GGF Edward Fuller). Timothy III, Tim II and Tim I all fought in Am. Revolution from VT, Manchester area. Their forebear was Jonathan Mead (moved to Amenia/Dutchess/NY). Jonathan's father was John Mead whose father was William Mead who arrived in Boston ca 1635, moved to CT. He and his two sons, John and Joseph are the ancestors of the Meads in Spencer P. Mead's exhaustive history of the Mead family up to 1900 (a copy is online w/o the origianal genealogical trees in back; our latest forebear mentioned in Spencer Mead history is Henry Clay Mead, b. MI, Aug 1845, son of Er W. Mead and Rachel Marlatte; Er was a son of Lewis and Abigail. Henry Clay Mead's son Frederick Lamont Mead was my grandfather (1872-1948) ; his son Ralph Henry Mead was my father (1904-78). I"m one of four daughters; our only surviving brother is another William (Ralph) Mead , b. 1945, and his son is another Jonathan (William) Mead, b 1973. Other spousal names in our Mead line since the Waites are Marlatt (as mentioned), Mellinger, Bosch and McKeough/Janssen. Early American spousal names included the Fullers, Chamberlains, Potters, and others I can't pull out of my head at the moment! All best, and nice to meet you, Pam. Clare

Yes, Lawrence (AKA Laurie)was born in 1942 and was raised by Lorna Daphne (nee Mead) and Tasman Lionel Gadd. Tasman died at the age of 59 when Lawrence was 17years old. Lawrence graduated as a Dr of medicine and surgery. There was a public notice concerning Lawrence in the Sydney Morning Herald in 1986 relating to births deaths and marriages. I would be interested in finding out any information concerning Lawrence's natural parents. A starting point would be great!

Philip Mead (b. 1811) Candor,Tioga County, NY

To whom it may concern,

I am researching the MEAD family tree. So far I have tracked back to Philip MEAD born about Nov 1811 in Candor, NY. My proof of birth comes from Civil War registration papers. Philip MEAD married Celia Lucinda Wheeler (b: 1816 Vermont) at unknown date. Their first born child was Allen MEAD in Candor, NY Feb 11, 1837. Philip and Celia MEAD moved to Milledgeville, IL between 1852 and 1860. My primary mission is to figure out who were Philips MEAD’s parents and Celia’s parents. My secondary mission is to find more about their life (church, occupation, land etc). Below is the research timeline.

1811 Philip MEAD born in Candor, NY.
1837 Feb, 11 Birth of first child named Aleen MEAD in Candor, Tioga, NY.
1839 Birth of second child Franklin MEAD in Candor, Tioga, NY.
1840 Census Tioga, NY.
1841 Birth of third child William MEAD in Candor, Tioga, NY.
1844 Nov, 9 Birth of fourth child Charlotte Adelia MEAD in Candor, Tioga, NY.
1847 Birth of fifth child Joseph MEAD in Tioga, NY.
1850 Census Owego, Tioga, NY shows him with his wife Celia and children; Allen, Franklin, William, Charlotte, Joseph.
1852 Jul, 29 Birth of sixth child Mary Luella MEAD in Owego, Tioga, NY.
1860 Census Milledgeville, Carroll, Illinois.
1864 May, 15 Philip joined Union Army.
1864 Aug, 01 Philip died White Station, Tennessee.

Evidence found:
1820 New York Census Candor, Tioga, NY
1840 Federal Census – Tioga, NY
1850 Federal Census – Owego, Tioga, NY
1860 Federal Census – Milledgeville, Carroll, Illinois
American Civil War Records

Sources viewed:
History and genealogy of the Mead family Authur: Spencer P. Mead. circa 1901
History of Candor, NY: From Our Country and its People. circa 189?
Mead Family Ancestry by. Jim German

Possible Leads:
I located within the 1820 Census record of Candor, Tioga County (5) MEAD households. Three of them have children of Philip MEAD’s age at that time, Joseph, Salmon and Israel Jr.

Joseph Mead (2) males age 0-10, (1) males age 11-15, (1) males age 26-44
Salmon Mead (1) males age 0-10, (0) males age 11-15, (1) males age 26-44
Israel Jr. Mead (3) males age 0-10, (1) males age 11-15, (1) males age 26-44
**Also listed with no age appriate children Israel Mead and Lewis Mead.

Sources Needed:
Church Attended/Records
Marriage Record

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The Mead family history seems well documented once you get back far enough. I think with the final link of having Philip's parents, connecting the dots will be easier.

John

My tree goes back to Moses Mead (1782-1854). I think the researchers are uncertain as to if he was the son of Daniel (1749-1791). I just wait until someone thinks they have proof. Thanks.

Hi Roger,

Bob Mead (1825-1919) is my great granduncle. It's good to know that his cottage is still lived in, it must have been built well. My great grandfather is Bob's younger brother John Frederick who left Danbury and moved to Maldon.

I'd very much appreciate a digital photo of the cottage if you have one you don't mind sending me. My email address is charlie@mead-family.net.

I didn't know that Bob was a boot maker, like his father (another Robert) who also lived at Eves Corner. My first record of Bob shows him to be an ag lab at the age of 16 and then a bricklayer's labourer ten years later.

Best regards,

Charlie Mead.

I'm also a Mead, from Michigan, and can go back as far as Addison Mead. My father was Robert Mead, my grandfather was Harry L Mead, and his father was Addison Mead. The family was from McBain, Michigan. Do not know past Addison Mead. email me at samead036@charter.net if this might help. Somewhere in the house, is a booklet or letter about the family, and others we could be related to.

Hi,
I can't really help on the family tree, but I thought you might be interested to know that I live in Danbury in the Cottage that Bob Mead(1825-1919) lived in with his wife and children in 1881. He was first a boot maker, then a bricklayer and in 1884 he became church clerk and sexton. He retired from his last post in 1915 when he was 90 years old. In 1881 at the same time Bob was in my cttage Thomas Mead who was a brickmaker was a lodger in the cottage next door.A bit of a coincidence that Bob Mead was a brick layer Thomas Mead a brick maker and that our Cottage is the only one of 3 that has a Victorian brick front, which of course was Bob's cottage. Good luck with your research. Regards
Roger Smith.

I suppose you mean Dr. Richard Mead? His family came from Soulbury, Buckinghamshire, about 15-20 miles north of Watford. It's possible he is distantly related, but the connection would be before 1500. I've traced Richard Mead's ancestors back to a Richard Mede of Soulbury, who occurs in the records in the 1520s.

Here's a brief bio:

Dr. Richard Mead was the eleventh child of the Revd. Matthew Mead and was born at Stepney on 11th August 1673. He was baptised at the meeting house in Bull Lane on the 22nd of that month. He entered the University of Utrecht in 1689, afterwards studied medicine at Leydon and graduated M.D. at Padua on 16th August 1695. He began practice at Stepney in 1696. He was elected into the Council at the Royal Society in 1705 and again in 1707 and until his death, being vice-president in 1717. In 1703 he was elected physician to St. Thomas's Hospital and in 1715 a governor; in 1717 he received the degree of M.D. at Oxford and became a Fellow of the College of Physicians in 1716. He was called in to see Queen Anne two days before her death. In 1727 he was appointed physician to George II. He was the author of several medical works. He died on 16th February 1754 and was buried in the Temple Church. A monument to him surmounted by a bust by Scheemakers, and bearing a Latin inscription, is in Westminster Abbey.
It’s not a long list:

John Mead. Born in England, place unknown, about 1628

His parents:
William Mead, born 1592 in Watford, Hertfordshire. Married Philippa about 1620.

His parents:
Pricilla Mead, also called Prissley, Tillius, Tilly. Born 1548 in Watford. Married Dorothy Grey in Watford, 1579. Died 1606.

His parents:
Richard Mead or Mede, born about 1515 in England, place unknown. Married Margaret Gouldhurst in Watford in 1545. Her maiden name unknown, she was previously married to Henry Gouldhurst. Richard died 1559.

That’s the end of the line. I have two main contenders for Richard Mede before 1545, when we have the first definite record of him. There was a Richard Mede recorded several times in 1541-1545 in Tingrith, Bedfordshire, about 15 miles north of Watford. And there was a Richard Mede, the son of Thomas Mede of Saunderton, Buckinghamshire. This Richard is recorded in 1534-1538, about 10 miles west of Watford. There were several other Richard Medes, but I have ruled them out because they lived elsewhere after 1545.

I have more on my site. Click the links for Watford and John on the right:

http://koti.welho.com/lmead/page4.html

Yes I do Vance. A few years ago I got a list from you on the Meads from you all the way back to England in the 1500's. In my moving I lost the list of all the meads in England. The last one I have I believe is John Mead who was the first born in America. Do you still have the list of Meads in England and is there any way you could send me a copy of it please?

Well, this is to say Elijah moved from Wisconsin to Iowa. My grandfather Walter Mead was a son of Norman and was born in Lake City, Iowa. My Mother Lois Olsen was always wondering about Elijah. Her father Walter said they lived in around Early, Iowa and he helped his Uncle Lijah Mead and I don't know any more of his family. But Great Grandfather, Norman Mead was born in Wisconsin. His Father is buried there.
In my records, Elijah Mead married Sarah A. Hall. ELijah was born 22, Jan. 1826 in Rutland, VT. and died 10 May 1906 in Early, Iowa. IN my mother's records of Solomon Mead, he was born in Cornwall, VT. 20, March 1809 and died in 1869. His children are Lydia, Peter,, Isaac , Armida (married a Dr. JJ WIlder and lived in Wis. then there is Lois J. Mead and Abraham who lived in Eau Claire, Wis. he was buried there in 1923--he was born June 25, 1850 in Hampden, Columbia County, Wis.
Peter Mead was married to Sally Kinney
children-
Solomon Mead-my great great grandfather
Ezra--no record
Elijah Mead- born 1826-Rutland, VT.
Isaac Mead-no record
Mida Mead--no record
Lydia Mead--no record
Solomon had a daughter named Armida S. Mead.

Sarah that you talk about has to be Elijah Mead's wife.
Hope this helps I am working on all the Mead's records and I am overwhelmed. Just have the records put in and hope it helps.

In the same household as Ezra in the 1850 census are also Sarah Mead, age 64, born in VT, and Elijah G. Mead, age 26, born in Vermont. In the 1880 census Ezra gives his mother's birthplace as Vermont, so I'd say Sarah is his mother and Elijah is his brother.

In "History and Genealogy of the Mead Family" by Spencer Mead, page 366, there is this family:

Peter Mead, born 1779, married Sally Kinney and had:
Solomon
Ezra
Elijah
Isaac
Mida
Lydia

You can find it here:

http://lib.byu.edu/fhc/index.php

Spencer Mead also has the children of Solomon:
Peter, Isaac, Norman, Abram, and two unnamed children

These are Solomon's childen in the 1860 census:
Peter, Isaac, Amanda, Louis, Norman, Abram

So it's a pretty good match.

From Peter back are Ezra (1737), Timothy (1701), Jonathan (1665), John (about 1628), William (1592 in Watford, England), Priscilla (1548 in Watford), and Richard (about 1515).
Hi there! I am doing research on the Mead family. In particular, Ezra Mead (1821-1897) and wife Sylvia Barber. In the 1850 and 1860 censuses, they were living next door to Solomon and Sarah, and their many children in Hampden, Columbia, WI. I am stuck trying to find any relatives of Ezra and was hoping...maybe...that Solomon was a relation. Ezra and Sylvia eventually moved to South Dakota.

Can you tell me who those Stark and Mead marriages were? George Flavel Stark would be my 3rd cousin, 6 times removed. The same as the relationship of his wife to me. Was he in the civil war, or did he die of other causes during that time frame?
My email young.judith@sbcglobal.net please put Stark or Mead in the subject line.
Link to my tree:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=gary_youn...

Some time ago you posted a question regarding Helon Mead Stark, Rebekah Kilbourn, their daughter Orpha and her marriage to George Flavel Mead.

I will clarify for you. Helon was the son of Henry Mead Stark. Rebekah was the daughter of Asher Kilbourn. Their daughter did unite with George Flavel Mead - a cousin. The young couple lived in St.Johns, Michigan until he died during the Civil War.

There were multiple marriages of Stark and Mead.

Thank you both for your responses and sources. I now know where to start looking! I agree that there must be errors in the findagrave entries. For one thing, the entry for William Potter shows his spouse as Frances Child Potter (1609-1680) and his daughter as Hannah Potter Mead (1636-1700).

Findagrave allows entries to be made without finding the actual grave, so I know that members add names to cemeteries where family stories or other unreliable sources say they are buried. Very frustrating to those of us who want proof.

Again, thanks!

(Some guess her maiden name was *BROWN). See Anderson's "Great Migration Begins 1620-1633," vol. 1, pp. 256-57. Also see Prindle, Gillespie, p. 321.]- from Maureen Mead. So she may be the dau. of John and Dorothy Brown and not William and Dorothy (Brown) Potter.

From Lee Meade: I list her as a step-daughter of Henry Potter, who owned Schippan Point, one of the richest pieces of real estate in Stamford. It likely was his money that John used to finance his future fortunes.

In the Great Migration Begins, 1620-1633, Robert Charles Anderson writes (when discussing her ***possible link to John BROWN (d. 1636) and Dorothy _?__ ), vol. 1, p. 256: Dorothy m. 2nd a William Potter of Watertown, who moved to Stamford in 1645).

1. HANNAH, b. Watertown, 9 Sep 1634 [WaVR 3]; possibly married about 1656 to John MEAD of Stamford.

So it looks like we may not really know whether the maiden name of John Mead's wife was "POTTER" or "BROWN."

I don't believe they were two separate people as this person implies from the info from "Find a Grave" website. If this website shows that there is a Hannah Potter and a Hannah Brown buried in two different cemetaries with the same date of death, I question the accuracy of the info. They both can't be correct.

There’s an article, ”The English origin of William Mead” by Gordon Remington that appeared in the January 1998 issue of The American Genealogist. In a footnote he says that Hannah Potter could have been the daughter of John Browne and Dorothy. After John's death, Dorothy's second husband was William Potter, who adopted Hannah and gave her the name Potter.

Also from the same article, William Mead was born in 1592 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England. He married Philippa (maiden name unknown). There is no record of John's birth. His older brother Joseph was christened in 1623 in Watford, so John was probably born about 1625-30.

I've been reading the posts about John Mead and there are some obvious errors, such as marriages that occur before the birth of one or more spouses. The information I have is that William Mead, b. in Lydd, County Kent, England, married Martha Baker Davis, b. about 1604 in England. They immigrated some time after their son John Mead was born.

John married either Hannah Potter, b. 1636 in New Haven, CT, or Hannah Brown, b. 8 Sep 1634, on 10 Jul 1657, in Stamford, CT. I have been searching for any documentation other than written family histories to determine Hannah's maiden name. According to findagrave.com entries, both Hannah Potter Mead and Hannah Brown Mead were married to John Mead and both died on 13 Nov 1700. They are listed in different cemeteries.

Does anyone know of any documentation proving one or the other was John's wife?

My great grandmother was Mary Elizabeth Mead, born Feb 28, 1856 in Kings County, NY. Her parents are listed as John and Catherine Kelley from Ireland. I was told that her mother was married to Daniel Kelley, they both died young and she was left an orphan and only child. I can't find any birth records or information about her parents. She was married to Freeman L Randall and lived and died in MA. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
Thank you,
Diane
