Catharine Maria Meagher O'Neill was my grandmother. She was married to Thomas James O'Neill in August 1917. My mother Agnes, was the youngest of their three daughters, Catharine M., Mary Ellen, and Agnes.
During the typhoid outbreak of 1902 in Philadelphia, PA Both Catharine and her brother had contracted typhoid fever and were on their deathbed. They were 2 of the 50 people (who were sure to die within 48 hours)offered the experimental vaccine. Catharine survived and her brother did not. Her father was cruel to her for having survived and her brother dying.
She is buried in St. Patrick's Cemetary Kennett Square, PA
having died September 17,1968 of Leukemia.
Thomas James O'Neill was born in Hockessin, DE on November 22, 1878.His family lived in Kennett Square, PA. He headed west at the age of 14 on the rails and also worked on the Panama Canal (the 1st attempt)He contracted Malaria while there and nearly died(he was one of very few men in the camp that survived. The indigenous Indians removed the living and burned the camp down).
He had an interesting young life. He married at 39 years of age and lived in Phila., PA then moved back to Chester County , PA and had operated Greenhill farm in West Chester, PA and was a carpenter all of his life and died on his 71st birthday, November 22, 1949. My mother was 17 years old.
Catharine's middle name, although spelled Maria, was actually Mariah the "H" had been ommitted (misspelled)by her father from her baptismal certificate. She was from the Grays Ferry section of Philadelphia until married and moved to West chester, PA and lived there until her death.

Had "Northern Ireland from United States census.] and Elizabeth Galfoil [sic] from Roscommon in Hibernia [Ireland] [CommenT: Not indicated whether "Roscommon" means the county or town.
Note: Start search in the town. Book 143 includes 50 Jackson Street to 88 Jackson Street (there are no numbers: 54, 78, 80, or 82)(64 and 66 are listed in the book after 88. Checked 64 and 66 for other Farrell's. Found none.)(There are no odd numbers for Jackson Street listed in this book.) Found at 56 Jackson Street- all together between two other families- in the following order:
-Mary Farrell, female, age 17 [calculated birth= 1873; calculated birth = 1874 from 1880 census]
-Elizabeth Farrell, female, age 47 [calculated birth= 1843; 1900 census says born May, 1841]
-William Farrell, male, age 53 [calculated birth= 1837; 1900 census says May, 1840]
-John Farrell, male, 15 [calculated birth= 1875; 1880 census calculated birth= 1876.]
-Patrick Farrell, male, age 13 [calculated birth= 1877; 1880 census calculated birth= 1878]
-MAGGIE [sic] Farrell [sic], female, age 29 [calculated birth 1861- probably daughter of PETER Farrell. This MAGGIE is not William's daughter, Marguerite Veronica Farrell who was born November, 1867 (pe 1900 census), and who married George Barnes in 1889. In the 1880 census, Maggie- a 19 year old- is listed with the family of Peter Farrell. The Peter Farrell family was the "only" Farrell family living "close" to William Farrell's family. (Checked residence numbers before and after William Farrell's family- did not search the geographic area around his family.) Also Maggie is listed last in the 1890 census- out of order age wise, suggesting she is not a child of Elizabeth and William.)

1896, September 6
Marriage certificate 13946 Manhattan, New York, New York; Denis [sic] J Meagher married Mary E [sic] Farrell, 6 September 1896; witnesses to marriage: John Dervin and Mrs Rainforth; [do not know if witnesses are related to either Mary or Denis]; groom's full name- Denis J Meagher, residence-315 11th Street S[outh] Brooklyn, age- 30, white, single, birthplace - Brooklyn, father's name- John Meacher [sic], mother- Bridget Kenshella; number of groom's marriage- one; Mary E [Elizabeth?] Farrell, residence 655 Water, 21, white, single, birthplace- New York; father's name- William Farrell; mother's maiden name Elizabeth [no surname given]; number of bride's marriage = one; person performing ceremony- Anthony J Ke??y [Kenny?]; official station C [Catholic] Clergyman [see if at St Rose], residence 21 Attorney Street; date of record 14 September 1896.
Comment: Anthony J Ke??y not one of those who performed baptisms of William Farrell's children.

1897
Italiangen.org
BIRTH Meagher John Oct 10 1897 20436 Kings
1897
Ancestry.com
Brooklyn, New York Catholic Church Baptism Records, 1837-1900 [database on-line].
It appears that Henry Kingsmill was married at least twice possibly 3 times. His wives were:

unknown White

Mary Palmer and

Mary Allen (my 5xgreat grandmother)

Mary Allen is on Letitia's death certificate as her mother. Letitia's brother was John Allen Kingsmill so I think it's pretty certain that Mary Palmer was not her mother.

The site you have attached has a lot of information about the Kingsmill family but is well known for glaring errors.

Letitia and Joseph O'Meagher moved from Ireland with their children and lived mainly in the Maitland area of NSW.

Where in Australia are you? I live in Proserpine Qld. I'm not sure what, if any connection there is between my O'Meaghers and your Meaghers. My 3xgreat grandfather, Joseph O'Meagher was born in Kileroe, Tipperary (according to his death certificate) and married Letitia Kingsmill in a place called Roselton. I haven't been able to find out anything on Roselton. The name may have changed.

Letitia's parents were Henry Kingsmill and Mary Allen. She was born in Borris-in-Ossory, Queen's County now County Laois. One of my cousins did some research on the O'Meagher's and she said my great grandfather had the O'Meagher coat of arms and a seal. This coat of arms belonged/or were similar to the one described for the O'Meagher family listed on page 203.

Whether my O'Meaghers were entitled to this coat of arms through a descent from these people or took them without right, I shall probably never know.

My Lanes came from Gloucestershire and yes, William Laythorne/Latham was English.

Ah, A fellow Aus.
Now I have Sarah Meagher's father as Francis and mother Jane Davis. The only likely Francis so far is the son of William and Sarah Maher of Toomevara, Tipperary. Don't know about the attorney but I do think they were well educated.
My Lane is from Lane Park Tipperary.
And I have not found one of my Irish Lathams as a convict yet- May be he was English instead!
Do you have Letitia's parents?

Hi. Thanks for your reply to my post.

I can't fit Sarah Meagher into my tree. I can only go back as far as my 4xgreat grandfather in my O'Meagher line. That's why I have put my enquiry onto the message board in the hope that one day a O'Meagher relative will get in touch and say "These are your ancestors". I have a couple of breaks in my Kingsmill line but I'm probably distantly related to Kingsmill Pennefather and his family.

I don't know if you noticed the entry above Sarah's in the O'Meagher book. It makes mention of a William Meagher who was an attorney. I don't know if he was my ancestor. There were a couple of O'Meagher families who were lawyers, solicitors etc.

I think my O'Meaghers were all RC until my 3xgreat grandfather married Letitia Kingsmill. Interesting side note-My father was a Lane and one of my distant relatives married into the Latham family, although I'm not sure if that was their original name. William Latham came to Australia as a convict and his name on all his documentation read Laythorne.

His great grandfather was Kingsmill Pennefather of Cashell Co Tipperary.- (His mother Lavina Kigsmill).
Can you fit any of these people with your tree?
Most Meagher I have found seem to be RC but this part of my family were strict protestant.

Hi. Thanks for your reply. I know that Queen's County is now County Laois and unfortunately it hasn't helped me in my research.

My O'Meagher's seem to be shrouded in mystery. I purchased a book about the O'Meagher's of Ikerrin hoping that there would be something on my branch and although Joseph's father William is mentioned, it does not give any biographical information about his ancestry.

Can you settle one thing for me? Are Irish people who have the same surname all part of the one family or is it not the same as the Scottish clans?

Thanks
Angela

This is absolutley fascinating. I am living in Ireland and my grandmother was a Meagher. There tends to be confusion between the names Maher (Marr) and Meagher (Maa-her). In Ireland we pronounce both names the same and will only lean on the pronounciation when we are trying to differeciate between the two. As far as I am aware the original Meagher's can trace the family bak to North Tipperary for the last 1,000 years. A Meagher family have been living there. I am a cousin of their's. The thing to watch out for is first names of Timothy and John.

They lived in Virgina and then moved to Maryland. They had 2 children (that I know of) Catherine who married James Starr and William Joseph who married Catherine Coleman.

If this seems to fit with your findings, please let me know as it would fill in more of my tree for Thomas & Bridget Meagher.

Hi, Forgive me if I've already responded to you. Are you still researching Meaghers in NZ? My branch came from Ikerrin, Tipperary, Ireland in approx. 1864 and settled in Whitford, Auckland. My great-grandfather was Patrick O'Meagher (1835-1887)He is supposed to have married 3 times(?)In 1867 he married Mary Burke also from Ireland. They had Martin,John,Johanna,William,Valentine,James(my grandfather)and Ellen. Great-grandfather, Patrick, also had a son, Patrick Jnr.,from a previous marriage. Patrick Jnr.settled in Te Aroha. I have found a Joseph O'Meagher, a solicitor from Oamaru, who also lived in Paeroa and Auckland, but I cant connect him to my lot. I have other South Island contacts after a recent trip down south, if you're interested. Cheers, Sheryl Hill(Meagher)

DNA testing suggests that my fourth great grandfather may have been a Meagher who migrated from Ireland to Culpeper County, Virginia roughly about 1750. If that is correct then his name was changed to Marr because his son born in 1773 was John Marr. I know it's a long shot but does anyone at this site have an ancestor that might fit my situation? I have been unable to link John to any Marr that lived in Colonial Virginia so I want to explore this possibility. Thank you, Phillip

I love that this discussion has been going since 2000 on this site. That is 11 years! Anyway, my Dad was born and raised in Ireland and I was born and raised in the states but went back to Ireland that last two summers and went before for visits. In all my time there this summer, I never once heard it pronounced Me-ag-er or ma-her (maw-her) or any variation like that. My family who is there with the last name call themselves Mar (or Marr as some are typing it). It was semi-common. My dad's dentist AND doctor growing up had it as a Surname. Both pronounced it Mar. My doctor in California has it, too, but he wa pronouncing it wrong so we corrected him and he had to notify his employees. There was some more history about the original spelling before the British I heard. I will find out from my dad and share.

I am not sure where this Joseph O'Meagher fits into my O'Meagher/Kingsmill family.

According to his death certificate, my Joseph O'Meagher was born c. 1806 (although possibly the late 1700's) in Kileroe, Tipperary.

I'm curious about Joseph (NZ) and his connection to the Kingsmill family. He married Dorothy Cooper and they had the folowing children Alice b. 1874, Brian b.1876, Emmeline b.1873, Gerald b.1869, Joseph b.1872, Josephine b.1878, Maurice b.1871. I bleive he was connected to the Kingsmills about whom there is a large family tree.
My O'Meaghers came to NZ in 1864. My GG grandfather was Patrick O'Meagher and I'm unsure how we are connected to Joseph......Good luck

Hello Everyone, I have started a regular series of postings about Irish and Meagher/Maher Matters. Please have a look if you are interested. My Mahers were in the Queens County/Kilkenny/Tipperary cluster. The blog is general interest, general background that supports my particular research. I have recently been to specific places in Ireland that I will gradually write about, mostly pertaining to Mahers. I hope you enjoy it:
http://www.mahermatters.com
-Janet Maher

I tried sending a reply to your post yesterday, but apparently it wasn't sent as it doesn't show up here.

I don't know if there is a connection between your Meagher and my O'Meagher. Joseph was born c.1795 in Kileroe (?) County Tipperary. His father was William O'Meagher. He had 2 brothers, Samuel and William both born to William's first wife, Fidelia Matilda Smyth. William O'Meagher jnr died aged 27. I do not know if William or Samuel married and had children.

Interestingly, Joseph and Letitia O'Meagher had a grandson Percival who married a Hannah E.C. Dalton in Sydney. If you would like some information about this marriage, let me know.

In Ireland they say Ma Har. this has led to the misspelling of it as Mahar.
In the US it is pronounced Marr
The incorrect pronouciation is Mee gur.
Another incorrect way is Mee Ah gur.

Hi Donna
My paternal grandmother from Waterford, Joanna Meagher, married my grandfather, Gerald Brosnan (Co's Kerry and Cork) always maintained she was related to TFM. I appreciate this is a common Irish name but she was from his home town and not prone to 'flights of fancy' (according to my father) I have no family, as far as I'm aware, left in Ireland and dad was an 'only child'. Of course I would like to think I'm possibly related to the famous general, TFM, but I'm desparate to discover any living family members I may still have.
I am certain that Martin Meagher was born in 1812. That date is on his headstone in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Rochester NY. He died in 1888 and his death certificate states that he was 75 years old at that time.

possible Spillane-Meagher connection in Offaly and in Tipperary

A Ned Spillane, at the time of the Tithe Applotment Books (1828 for this parish) leased a large plot of land with Michael Egan, John Brereton, Timothy Maher, and John Egan, in the townland of Knockanroger, which is in the civil parish of Borrisnafarney, Tipperary. I am wondering if there was a marriage that might have taken place between a Spillane and a Brereton, or these people were all just neighbors. ALSO, in 1833 in Dunkerrin parish, Co. Offaly, Edward Spillane married Judy Meagher. They had several children but seem to have left the area by 1860.

Are you referring to Martin Meagher, the husband of Bridget Quinlan? Do you know the relation to Thomas Francis Meagher, (1823-1867)? I have a 4 generation picture of his wife Bridget and daughter after daughter, youngest being my grandmother, Catherine Grace Attridge Vick, who all resided in Rochester, NY. (Bridget and Martin traveled from Tipperary) Any information on the line of Meaghers I am from would be appreciated.
