Hello Norma.
It's a real long-shot I know after so many years that your going to read this reply.
You don't mention any dates, but I have Meakin relatives in the Bradford area. My mother's maiden name is Meakin.
My Grandfather was Albert Meakin born and died in Bradford 1900-1963. His father was William Meakin born in Belper, Derbyshire 1852 and died in Bradford 1918. His mother was Malona(many variations) Meakin of Derbyshire 1833-1898 (no mention of a father). Her father was William Meakin born in Ilkeston Derbyshire 1791 and died in Belper 1869.
Hope this is of some use now.
Genie

I have just looked at this site before looking up my family tree. My mother is still alive in her 80's and has told me about her grand mother Sarah Meakin. Daughter to the pottery Meakin's. The story of her life was interesting.I would love to hear more about the rest of the family,as Sarah's parents are my great great grand parents

Hi Michael

Since I put this message out in 2001, we have found a bit more information. Basically our family always believed we were related to Alfred Meakin of the pottery manufacturers and that this relationship was something to do with our line of Geale. We have found that a Geale married into the family of William Fountain Meakin, but the person researching the William Fountain Meakin line had traced no links to the pottery people.

I suppose I am asking if you have any records connecting either Geale or William Fountain Meakin back to any of the three pottery Meakins. Perhaphs foolishly I have quite a collection of Alfred Meakin china, being bought up on this story! Cheers
Janice Huntington

Walter Meakin (linked to France/Price)

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help trace my Grandad, Walter Meakin, born approx 1900 and died about 1973? He married my Gran, Florence Emily France nee Price in 1944, after she was recently widowed from John France.

Florence had five children by John and had one more with Walter, my Dad, also born Walter Meakin, though later in life he would be known as Wal.

While I seem to have a lot of information on Florence, I just can't find anything substantial on Walter.

Many thanks,

Jon

Hi,
I'm not sure we are referring to the same man, but I am one of Walter Meakin's biological grand-daughters. I never met him, but my grandmother, Margaret Jean Hobden, (b. April 29, 1914, d. Feb. 5, 1984) was married to Walter Meakin for an undisclosed amount of time during the 1930's. My father was born James Robert Meakin on October 4th, 1937 in Sudbury, Ontario (later adopted name James Drury).
I've attached a copy of the only photo I have of Walter and my grandmother. Estimating that she was 23 years old when she gave birth to my father, and I assume that's about how old they are in this photo.
According to Canada's Local Histories online, http://www.ourroots.ca/e/page.aspx?id=508564 Walter grew up in Blaine Lake, Saskchewan, a town settled by the Russian Doukhobors.
I am one of Walter Meakin's biological grand-daughters. My father, adopted name James Drury, was born James Robert Meakin on October 4th, 1937 in Sudbury, Ontario. This has always been a precious image to me; the only link to so many unanswered questions. Estimating that she was 23 years old when she gave birth to my father (James Meakin - Drury), I assume that's about how old she is in this photo.
It's curious that there is no mention of their union in the files I've read here so far...only of Walter's marriage to another woman in Blaine Lake, Saskchewan. Possibly the rest of Walter Meakin's descendents are not even aware of this part of his life?

Thanks to research by my cousin Ellen, this is the first solid information I've read about this side of my family tree. It's exciting to learn about the Doukhobor ancestry, and that there are possibly blood relatives living in Saskatchewan, Alberta, and/or BC.
Please add me to the loop if you are a relative or have any more information about other ancestors and descendents of Walter Meakin.

My mom went to visit them several times in Gig Harbor when she was a teen. Bell was her grandmother. There is a picture of her in my Tree called Powell Family Tree. I also have a very sad letter writen by Bell to my grandmother when Frank died. If you would like, I can E-mail them to you. Let me know by a message to my tree as I check it rather than this message board.

Re: Better prospect for Meakin Derbyshire

I am researching a Meakin family in Derbyshire and Yorkshire. there are several Thomases, none with dates corresponding to those in this link. They were in Derbyshire from at least 1839 & in Masboro from at least 1869. Thomas Meakin (b. 1839, Derbyshire) married Ruth (8 children). Son Edwin (b. 1863) m. Mary Ann Little (b. 1863, Sheffield; d. 1905, Rotherham) (4 children: Thomas Cyril, b. 1884, m. Agnes O'Reilly, to US 1913, d. Pennsylvania, 1917; Austin, b. 1890; Winifred, b. 1898; Wilfred Edmund, b. 1900, m. Ruby Iris Clark, 1922). Ruby died in Rotherham in 1986. Could anyone explain to this Yankee about names of shires and counties? For instance, I have Rotherham in Derbyshire, Yorkshire. I have Mary Jane Meakin born in 1865 in Derby, Derbyshire. All her younger siblings were born in Masboro, Yorkshire. Some of her nephews were born in Derbyshire, South Yorkshire, Yorkshire, West Riding. from looking at maps, these places are near each other, but I can't figure out the nomenclature. Can a local help me?

Re: The origin of the name as Flemish/Viking -- I had assumed the family had moved from Ireland to England in the early 1800s and changed the spelling from Meachan to Meakin. Is that true in the case of some families with that name?
--

I am trying to find pictures of the Meakin brothers from the pottery business. I have found one of George Meakin. But with them being so prominent in the business, I would think there should be more photos out there. Has anybody seen any?

Hi, I was checking out your tree, and I saw a story on Henry James Meakin and Ann Bagnall, that was written by Aunt Emsie. Ann Bagnall was the sister to my GGGrandfather, Thomas Bagnall B:1826. Is there more of that story around? It is so interesting to read about them, I have always wondered on the family, with some kids being born before they were married. It is so great that someone actually wrote down the history of them, too bad more didn't do it.

I am tracing our family tree (Johnson) from Australia, but believe I am connected to the Johnsons of Johnson Bros.(Pottery) Stoke-on-Trent, which is said to be started by 4 brothers (Alfred, Frederick, Henry and Robert) who were grandsons of Alfred Meakin (according to their web-site). My grandfather (only known as Pop - not very helpful!) I was told married "beneath" him and disowned from the family. If anyone has any information on this line of the Meakin or Johnson tree I would appreciate it.

"Sarah Meakin (born 1856) whose fathers name was Joseph - he was as far as I know a Potter." She may be my great grandfather's cousin. Fredrick Orson Daniel Meakin, my GGF, was born 4 Sep 1855 in Raunds, Northamptonshire, Eng, but immigrated to the US with his parents, brothers and sisters in the late 1800s. James & Sarah Phillips Meakins, FOD's parents sent him and his older brother ahead of the family, arriving in San Francisco and then traveling to Utah by whatever means. FOD had a sister Sarah Meakin born 8 Aug 1858 in Raunds, but our records stop at James' father, William Meakins. We haven't been able to find anything beyond that point.
I don't have the information you are looking for. Looks like your ancestors were born between my grandfather, Blaine Meakin and my great grandfather, Fredrick Orson Daniel Meakin. FOD was born in Raunds, or lived there. He was born in 1855 to James Meakins and Sarah Phillips. My dad tells me the family line has some link to the Meakin Pottery Company. I'm new at researching my ancestry, so don't know if I can be of much help. Sorry for delay in responding. I'm still real busy with work and all but I appreciated your response. Future responses should be sent to jmeakin@wcfgroup.com. I check that daily. My wife's email is still current.

Hi, I don't know if we share the same thread of Meakin but there are 2 names in your history that match mine! My research shows a Herbert born in 1883 to John Meakin (b.1840 Repton Derbyshire) and Mary Ann Parish (b. 1853). They were living in Mortlake London at the 1891 census. I also have John's parents as William Meakin (b.1801 Derbyshire) and Elizabeth (b. 1801 but where and maiden name I don't know). They were farmers and it appears that the Meakin grandmother, Jemima who was 70 at the 1841 census in Repton, was also living there under "independent means". I am actually quite anxious to find this grandmother Jemima but she slips out of the net because she comes before the normal records found on the internet! Any information would be gratefully received and I do hope that what I have told you is informative and helpful! Best wishes, Kate

My maiden name was Meakin. Mt father, Claude was next to the youngest of 12 children of Walter and Ann (nee Chadwick of Ilkeston). His father John was the eldest son of Joseph and Ann (nee Gaskin) of Tagg Hill where the family established a stockingers shop (framework knitting. The family lived in Tagg Hill for many years. This takes me back to Joseph's birth in 1813. However, now I am getting stuck as I don't seem able to trace his parents - I've only got his birthdate from census records.
Pleased to hear from any other Meakins researching who may either be able to help me or whom I can help
cheers
Ann

Hi Maragret, I would be very keen to know if you have any idea whether there were family membes further back - namely Sarah Meakin. She was born 1856 - her fathers name was Joseph (he was a Potter). Sarah Meakin married my Great Grand Father George Edward Leat in 1872 in St. Giles Church, Newcastle, Staffs. What has made me think that there could be a connection is that the other family names mentioned in the reply to your message - contained a few of the family names of George and Sarah's off-spring i.e. Charles (my grand father) - his second name ironically was Thomas. There were also a Sarah Anne, Martha, and May. I would be most interested to know if you have any idea as far back as this. They stayed at 72 Charles Street, Hanley - with the 1881 Census. Any connection? Please let me know - you can e-mail me directly via cscm@polka.co.za

Cindy Maitland (nee LEAT)

Could the Meakin family you are looking for, possibly have a Sarah Meakin (born 1856) whose fathers name was Joseph - he was as far as I know a Potter.
Sarah married George Edward Leat (my Great Grand Father) hence Sarah is my Great Grand Mother. If there marriage details might help - George Edward married Sarah on 14th September 1872 in St. Giles Church, Newcastle, Statts. Plese let me know - I am also trying to trace backwards from this point, and if we are on the right track - you may be able to help me.

Your UK origins definitely look to trace back to the "Staffordshire" Meakins. Another correspondent on here, Chris Bartlett in New Zealand, is the number one expert on much of that line, I think. Chris and I have yet to find any shared ancestor with my "Derbyshire" Meakins, (see my note above) who were just twenty miles further down the River Trent.

Click the Search for Names box, then use the Search Tribalpages box. iii. Just putting Meakin into the Last Name box brings up numerous entries, too many of which need a tiresome Password. My tree the Meakin Family of Derbyshire does not need one, and I suggest you iv. go straight to its Home Page once you are in.
