Many Mebanes were not born in the City of Mebane. There are many who resided in Greensboro, Highpoint, and Winston-Salem.

The Mebane Indians which are from the Saponian Tribe moved from Oklahoma to Greensboro

Some studies reveal thatThe Mebane name became prominent in Sweden around 1770 and other studies show that the Mebane name originated in Africa

My grandmother name was Alice Mebane who was a cherokee Indian of Greensbor NC

This is probably not what you wanted - but hope it was helpful.

Thanks Carol for replying. I've had a hard time finding our Daniel's family - there were so many Mebane families (black and white) in Alamance Co. around 1880 when he was born and my friend has no inkling of his parents' names. Her son's h.s. graduation is next week and she is hoping visiting family members will be able to add some to what we have found. Maybe we'll be able to eventually put our families (yours and hers) in the same place.

Maria

I too am researching African-American Mebane families of North Carolina. I recently found a marriage of George Mebane and Ellen Parham on the Alamance county website dated 1870. This would be my gggrandfather. I also found a marriage between George Mebane jr and Elizabeth Bumpass in the on the Durham website for 1890. This is my ggrandfather. I do not know if I am related to your Mebanes. Eventually my family did live in Durham but they too may have come from Mebane, NC.

Thanks,
Carol

I am doing some research for my daughter's teacher. Her G-Grandfather was Daniel Mebane, born in North Carolina (we assume in Mebane but haven't proved it)in about 1880. She was theorizing about the origin of the town's name came from the land owners in the area and of course, we confirmed that. Now, we're moving on to her family. Daniel was married to Julia Swinney (or Sweaney) who was born in NC in 1888. We've found their children and tracked some of them across the country where they scattered after they grew up.

She would love to have more information on the Mebane family of the area - the white and especially any African-American connections still there. If anyone can help, please email me.

Thanks,
Maria Hanna

I'm pretty sure that Mrs. Johnson was married to Mebane prior to this marriage. Look at the information for the Mebane children. The census record shows they were born in Texas, the father in Tennessee and the mother in Virginia. She was born in Virginia.

I have not found an 1870 census record for anyone; however, there is an 1860 census record in Lamar County for a James A/D Mabine, age 30, born in Tennessee. The wife is an S M, age 20, born in Virginia. I'm certain this is the father. I just don't have any additional information to provide.

If this James was born in Tennessee, he is probably from the Mebane's of North Carolina. I have Mebane ancestry but do not have any information on the part of the Mebane family who went to Tennessee.

Sandra Arnold

I see that James Allen Mebane (Sr) was born in Lamar County, Tx. In the 1880 Census it shows he lived with J.B.Johnson, and it listed J.A. Mebane as a son. I am confused because of the difference in the surnames. Did Mr. Johnson adopt J.A. Mebane? Who were the actual birth parents of J.A.Mebane? I did not find him listed in the 1870 census at all. The 1880 census listed a total of 3 Mebane children in the household. (all teenagers) James Allen Mebane is my great grandfather and any info would be appreciated.

Hi my husbands 7g grandparents were Alexander and Mary Mebane through their son Williamm Mebane that married Jane Abercrombie in 1766. Have a little bit more info but not a whole lot. There are two Mebane cemeteries about 45 minutes from where I live in TN one of which I know is the same line the other I am still working on. All of Alexanders Great Grandson Williams' family is buried in the one I have linked to my family line.
Jessica Ing Bennett

Hello John,

I would say that your Mebanes and Tinnens are much related to the ones who settled in Orange County, NC in the mid to late 1700's.

William Mebane, Sr. of Chester County, Pa. was the father of Alexander Mebane, Sr and William Mebane. Alexander settled in Orange County, NC and William settled in Guilford County, NC.

Alexander Mebane, Sr. was married to Mary Tinnen. His daughter, Frances Mebane, was the first wife of my ancestor, John Graham, also of Chester County, Pa and Orange County, NC. There was also a James Tinnen, who seemed to have been brother to Mary Tinnen Mebane who settled in Orange County, NC.

There has been a book published recently by Robert M. Mebane, "History and Genealogy of the Mebane Family" which covers some of the early history in Pennsylvania.

Best regards,

John Fox
Winston-Salem, NC

John's second marriage was to Mary Bird on 15 October 1782.

John's son, John Graham, was never married and settled in Texas.
The William Graham that you mentioned as being killed by Indians was the eldest son of John Graham and Frances Mebane. He was on a hunting party with his cousin Hugh Tinnen, who was also killed. In fact, this was the culminating document which established Frances Mebane as a daughter of Alexander Mebane, Sr. Our Graham Bible had recorded the death of William by Indians in 1794.

Our John Graham was from Chester County, Pa; as was the Mebane family, and the Tinnens. These families have several connecting marriages within them. Alexander Mebane, Jr. was married to Molly Armstrong, first cousin to John Graham's second wife, Mary Bird. Molly Armstrong's mother was Molly Bird, sister of James Bird of New Castle County, Delaware, which is just adjacent to Chester County, Pa.

John Fox

John, thanks for this additional news on Tinnen connection.
Do you know if Robert Graham was Baptist, or what church he was a member?. My John Graham was married in 1814by a Baptist in Cannon Co. With Robert the only known Graham found there, he would expect to be related.

Do you know when the three brothers went to Williamson, and near what present community on Harpeth River, which is 100 miles long. Do you know if Wm ever married or had children?

I do feel you are the only one who can help me determine if my John is of your line. Do you know what Wm was doing in Williamson Co., in 1794 or earlier? Was he the one sued over a bed abt 1788 in the 3rd session of Davidson Co., Court?

Your New Castle, Del info is proof then that John Graham's family or ancestors of 5 brothers came to America in 1701 with Andrew Lynn. These brothers were soon resettled in Chester, PA until the Indian attacks of abt 1754 sent them to Orange Co, Hillsborough, NC.
I have this line as beginning with Jarrard (Jarrett) with son Rev. Michael Graham f/o John Graham, Sr. who died in 1808, and John 's oldest sister, Jannett "Jane" of Alamance County, m. to John Walker, Jr. was administrator with John Jr. of TN in 1809.

There were several John Grahams in Chester Co, and several more in Orange County, and a few found in Williamson Co., Tn, so they are very difficult to track except by birth date and a wife, of which I have neither for our John,'s father .

I have found a John that could fit, m. to Jane ? The only clue is that the possible father of my John or at least one residing near him in Lawrence Co., Alabama died in 1825 with possible living kin or brothers George and Andrew, a Captain John Graham who died after wife, with 11 living children 6 sons, & 5 daughters.

My John Graham would then be the III, but no proof and had son John Calvin Graham, CSA who settled in Tex before the civil war, and died at Gettsburg.

Again Thanks,
Dennis

Thanks:
This is certainly news. I had nothing on a land grant for a John Graham in M. TN later than 1849.

I would have thought much earlier than 1850 for a vet land grant. In what name was the deed recorded? I searched and found a grant in the name of John Graham in 1788 of 2,000 acres N District bok A pg 31, grant #60, Warrant # 638, Middle district s/s of Duck River. I also found a Richard Graham with a grant of 2,000 in Bk A pg 45, grant # 89 Warrant # 683 on property adjoining property of John, which I presume was in Sumner County. I'm not sure if Robt was related or that this John Graham was not connected to Mebane.
I found one for William Graham in Dixson Co 1786 for 640 acres N. Dist. bk G-7 grant #6, Warrant #102 , and do you know if your William was the same killed by Indians in Williamson Co., in 1794 age 21. I know that Williamson Co., was not yet formed at this time. My John Graham did own property in williamson and married 1814 in now Cannon Co. (Bedford or Rutherford) Do you known when Grahams purchased property there?
Based upon what you earlier reported on Col. John Graham b. 1778 who never married and went from NC to TX, I was under the impression that he first settled in TN. So he was Military? I'm still confused. I have found grants in name of John & Robert jointly, in 1831 in Shelby Co.TN. (Memphis)

Dennis
