Does anyone have Machanic ancestors with ties to Burlington, VT? My great grandfather, Barnet Machanic, born in 1866, was from Kiev. He came to NYC in 1883, where he married Sarah Levin in 1890, lived briefly in Montpelier, VT, and was living in Burlington by 1902, where he owned a cleaning and dying business. Their daughter, Belle Machanic Freedman, was my grandmother. Her siblings were Israel, Florence Machanic Tarsches, Hermon (aka "Hermie"), Morris (aka "Macy"), Allen, Ethel Machanic Alper, Sylvia Machanic Yessner, and Philip.

As an aside, I had always heard that the our "Machanic" family branched off from the Mechanic family, with the Mechanic side remaining practicing Jews and the Machanic side "not so much".

I had always heard our last name was of Serbo-croatian background but at one point that region may have included parts of Russia.

My family came from Poland in 1917 My grandmother from Bialystock, my grandfather from Buten. They settled in the Bronx, NY after living on the lower east side. My grandfather and his brother,3 sisters and Buenos Aires, Argentina because they did not meet the quota. We currently have about 35 cousins there. My family still lives mostly in the north east but some moved to North Carolina, and out west. When I was very young in the 1950's I recall enormous parties of a reunions of sorts for the Mechanic family. Miss that. The entire family was Jewish if that's any help. Let me know what you have found. Regards

Correction, not visit but I believe you said "follow up"...As for the family physical description, I'm hoping this is an undiscovered branch, most in mine do not have those physical characteristics, but then again, I can think of several of my great uncles who would have qualified...From what I've seen of many old photo's, this would not be what I'd call a distinguishing feature of my overall group...BUT you never know, branches may be different, and it depends on just how far back you are looking...I do not discount anything due to the enormous size of my Mechanic family...

I am told that After her passing ,at around age 45 her family had her buried in South Africa.
In the summer when I see the couple again I will enquire about
some of her friends. I recall that one close friend and business partner stayed in touch with her family. but it will be june 2003 before i can follow up.
I suspect you have a relationship to her family.
the family tree she showed me went back to 1800 or so,
it was physically huge. It was in a roll and completely covered a 7 foot dining room table. there were many families in the 1850 period and baruch was present in many of them

I have so far traced my Mechanic family back to the early 1800's in the area of Ariogala, Lithuania...As far as I know, there are no connections to Ukraine, but of course with a family of such immense size, anything is possible...Since the surname Mechanic when adopted by Jewish families, related to their trade or occupation as a carpenter, I am sure it was quite common in many areas of the former Russian Empire...As Baruch was also a very common male name among Jews, I feel the likleyhood of a family connection here, very slim...

To anyone researching the Mechanic family...I have been researching my Mechanic family for fifteen years and have traced them back to a town in Lithuania called Ariogala in the district of Kovno...At times in was known as Russia...My charts lead me to believe that most of the Bernards, Barney's, and Pinchas', belong to us since these names keep repeating themselves from generation to generation, along with Harry, Norman, and Sara/Sadie...I have recently discovered a branch of the family in South Africa, the descendants of Pinchas Mechanic, and would very like to hear from anyone researching this family name...There are many variations of spellings prior to this Anglicized version of Mechanic, some being Mekhanik, Mechanik, etc...

Lynette, I don't remember if I replied to you regarding Bernhard being a witness for naturalization. My cousin Rita just checked the message board and e-mailed me. Yes, the Ashland Ave. address is where our Bernhard lived at that time. At that time he's listed in the city director as a laborer. Later he worked as a machinist. He was my grandmother's brother. The family did come from Russia - the part that is now Lithuania. Cousin Rita found the actual town which I had not known - Ariogala, Kovno, Russia.

1896 was the last time I found Bernhard in a city directory, though he lived until 1925.

I believe that the Bernhard Mechanic she is inquiring about is the witness on my grandfather's naturalization document--It shows that Bernhard lived at 614 N Ashland Ave. in Chicago(1896)...I'm assuming that he and my grandfather were pals. While I can't provide info about the Mechanic family, I do have this small piece of info...maybe they worked together?? Was the Mechanic family from Russia??

We were only aware of my fathers family which consists of himself and his brother and a few cousins based in England and South Africa. We were just curious to how they came to be such a large spread throughout America and the origins of some of the families and whether you are all connected or not.
Thank you and I would be grateful for any response
M Mechanic
