Daniel Gray Beckett is my nephew and apparently the great-great-grandson of Armand Mechin. Armand married my great-grandmother, Jesse Gray (known to me as Little Dearie), the daughter of Edmond Gray. Gray was a Mississippi and Ohio riverboat captain and friend of Samuel Clemens. Jesse and Armand produced my grandmother, Terzah Mechin Harty, whom we grandkids called "Muna." The story I've heard is that Armand, while in France during The Great War, did some loving as well as fighting and that, in consequence of that loving, Edmond Gray forced his daughter to divorce Armond. And that's all I know of him. Thanks for starting this thread and the information.

I have in my possession his dog tags, a photo and a metal he was awarded for his actions during the battle of Verdun. My father new Nona, his grandmother, quite well and could provide plenty of details about her life.

Jean MECHIN

Wow! Very first post! I hope someone else reads this forum!! I am researching the family of Jean MECHIN. He was born on February 14, 1822 to Jean MECHIN. The first Jean was a farmer in France and fought with Napoleon in 1812. The second Jean was born in Tours, France. He was apprenticed to England as a jeweler when he was 14 and went from England to France several times. He became the foreman at Sir John BENNETT's jewelry store in London. He married Valentine MARDELL, whose father was listed as (?) M. Valentine, who was a baker an owner of a restaurant in France. They had four children: Jane, who married a DARENBURG and remained in France, Gustave V. R. MECHIN, born in London, went on to be very famous in St. Louis as a Patriot and leader of several associations and married Flora, Armand J MECHIN, who attended St. Louis University at the age of 12 (!) and was in the jewelry business with his father, and Julliette Valentine MECHIN, my great-great-grandmother. The family went from London to New York between 1873 - 1875 on the SS Canada. They went from New York to St. Louis, Missouri, where Gustave stayed and Jean ran a jewelry store briefly on 3rd street. Then, the family moved to East St. Louis, IL, across the Mississippi River, whicah at the time, was a boom town. Armand and Jean opened a jewelry store (the FIRST in town) on Broadway. Valentine died in 1894. Julliette married Thomas Francis KELLY in 1888, son of Francis G KELLY and Mary GLENNON. Jean died in 1904 when he was hit by a streetcar! If anyone has any more info on this family, especially Jean's line previous to him, please email me at angie25622652@yahoo.com. I have lots a documents and finds to share!

I am looking for descendants of Armand Mechin and wife Mabelle Hirst in order to learn more family information. They had a child Nona Mechin (AKA Winona Mechin). Her married name was Woehl.
Do you know any descendants of Armand and Winona Mechin I could contact.

Marianne

Wow. You are the FIRST person I have seen researching the MECHIN name. Jean was a Protestant, But I know he was in France in the 1820-1850s. Our families are probably linked somewhere! I have been running into problems with the French research, as most of the info is in, duh, French!! But, I WILL find out!! All of the info I recorded on my first post was discovered completely on my own, so I know I can do it!

Good research! My mother's maiden name was Mechin. Her grandfather, Hugh Mechin, was born in Brougham, Ontario in 1849. His father William came from Tyrone, Ireland. The information I have is only anecdotal but I understand many Mechins were Hugenot Protestants and left France for Ireland and England after the revocation of the Treaty of Nantes in 1685. I would be very interested in any info anyone has on the Mechin family in France or Ireland.
