Hello, Gillian. I'm sorry but I cannot find anybody by the name of Elder in the Medcalf family tree. The only Helen I could find is Helen Medcalf, 1860-1875. She was born in Chewton, Victoria, Australia but died at the age of fifteen. I don't think I can help you otherwise unless you can give me an idea of any dates but as I have already said I have no record of the name Elder. Regards, Ann.

Hi Judy,
My aplogies for not getting back to you sooner. I am in the middle of working on my husband's line and have been told by a now deceased member of the family that his great grandmother (Mary Jane Sophia Medcalf Cowan 1863-1914) was connected to the William and Martha Medcalf family. As yet I haven't found the connection and as there were quite a number of Medcalf's in the Toronto area during her lifetime it is slow going.
I have accumulated a fair bit of information on Francis H. Medcalf, including a number of bio's on him, but so far cannot connect the two. Mary Jane's father was said to have been an Isaac Medcalf.
Any help you can give to prove/disprove this theory would be much appreciated, and of course, any info that I might have that would be of help to you I would be willing to share.
Thanks ..........Dawn
P.S. You can contact me via my email root4leafs@yahoo.ca

All I know is that my family lived in the Braintree, Essex area around the late 1700's onwards until the late 1800's. Abraham Medcalf was born in 1790 and I can't recollect him having a brother called William living in Ireland - did William move to Ireland when he got married?
I do know for a fact that our Medcalf family were a family of butchers. Hope this may be of some help.
Kind regards, Ann Simons.

My ancestors are Abraham Medcalf born either 1789 or 1796 who lived in Bocking, Braintree, his son was Alfred, my great great grandfather, and his son, Jethro, was my great grandfather. I live in Braintree not knowing 21 years ago that my ancestors were there years ago. A lot of them went to London in the mid 1800's and many of them were butchers.

Re: Medcalf Family Braintree Essex

Hi Ann,

Wow that is amazing that you live in Braintree now all those generations later. Have your family always been in the same area? Hopefully not still butchers?

For the children of Abraham Medcalf and Amy May I have Alfred 1827, Charles 1828, Ralph 1831, John Alder 1934, Agnes 1844. This is mainly obtained from census records.

I must admit that it has been a while since I looked with any detail into this line. I don’t have much going back from Abraham but I did see an interesting note that Amy May was possibly Jewish. Know anything on that?

I did hear that there was a picture of Abraham but have not seen it. Would love a copy it you have one.

I can provide a fair bit of info on John Alder if you are interested. He lead a very interesting and varied life here is Aust. Lived by the seat of his pants his did! He is one of my more adventurous ancestors.

In brief - At the age of 19 John immigrated to Australia arriving in Melbourne on the ship “Hope” in July 1855. His brother Charles had also come out to Australia earlier. John was probably loured here by the promise of easy wealth from gold. Upon his arrival John tried his hand at gold mining based at Golden Point at Castlemaine. He must not have been successful as he returned to his profession making a living using his butchering trade.

He married his first wife Catherine Gibbon at Castlemaine in 1856 when he was 21. John states his occupation as butcher not goldminer. Possibly by this time he was working for his brother Charles in his slaughtering business. It is unknown what happened to Catherine or if there were any children from the marriage. In early 1860 John is shown as still residing at Castlemaine. He was hospitalised for a month in Jan/Feb.

The next record of John shows him in Ararat employed as a butcher. In 1866 he married Florence Frewin at Ararat. He was 27 and she was 17. Permission from the police magistrate was required. In 1867 his room and butchers equipment were sold at auction as a result of insolvency.

John and Florence would have a large family of twelve children. They would move many times while rasing their family. They resided for a while in Ararat after their marriage, then near Bendigo by 1868, Elmore by 1871 and finally Yarrawonga by 1884. Four of their children would die in childhood. Three children died during the time they lived at Elmore - in 1876 a daughter Florence aged 5 years with breathing difficulties and in 1881 two boys, John and William, within a month of each other from diphtheria aged 4 and fifteen months. After moving to Yarrawonga their eldest daughter Alice died from a heart condition after a painful four month illness just short of her 20th birthday in 1887. In Yarrawonga John worked for two and half years for McCrabb as a butcher shop hand. In March 1888 the business was taken over by Patallo. Two weeks later John fell ill and was unable to work for a few days. Patallo dismissed him. John took the matter to court and won. He then worked as a pig dealer for a period. 1888-1893 Florence is shown as owing a house at Lynch Street Yarrawonga and then from to 1884-1885 in Telford Street Yarrawonga.

Eastern Australia was in the grip of a depression and hence John would have had to go where any work could be found. It is believed that John went to Western Australia during this time hoping to find it rich on the gold fields. He died at the Oven's Benevolent Asylum, Beechworth on 6th April 1899 from paralysis influenza. He was aged 65 years. The details of his death were registered by the asylum and his death certificate states that he was married but the details were unknown. He was most likely either trying to find work or away pig dealing at this time. Florence would die over thirty years later in her mid 80’s at Sydney at the home of her daughter Ethel.

Lisa
redfootedpanda@bigpond.com

I think Abraham Medcalf born 1796 was my great, great, great grandfather, Alfred my great, great grandfather, his son was Jethro Medcalf, his daughter was Florence Medcalf (my grandmother) and her daughter is Elleen Medcalf Martin (married name Burley) born 1916 and still alive. I know that Jethro Medcalf was a butcher and a lot of his family were. I live in Braintree, not knowing until a few years ago that my ancestors were born nearby. Abraham Medcalf is mentioned in the Braintree & Bocking History as a butcher and cattledealer. There is a 1826 picture with him in it with other Braintree dignitaries. I have Charles Medcalf born 1828 (he went to Australia and died in 1889) Ralph born 1831, Alfred born 1834, and Emma Agnes born 1843. I do not have a record of a John Medcalf (as you will notice I make it that Alfred was born in 1834). Jethro's son, Jethro moved to New Zealand about 1920. Hope this info will be of help to you. I look forward to hearing of any further info you may have. Regards, Ann Simons.

My gg grandmother was Susannah Medcalf. According to various census returns she was born about 1801 in Lambeth, London. She married Jeremiah Newbound in 1821 in Clerkenwell, London, and they had 7 children. Susannah died in 1881 in Alms Houses in Southwark, London. Does anyone have this lady sitting in their family tree? I am trying to find information about her and would love to know who her parents were and whether she had any siblings.
Many thanks, Elaine

Dear Charles
Also a reply to an old message... I am descended from the Braintree Medcalfs as well. I think I am also descended from the London Medcalfs that you were seeking. I have few details and no dates. My great-grandfather was Jethro Medcalf (known as Black Jeff) who was 6' 4" and weighed 24 stone. He married Ellen Medcalf and they had a "string" of butcher shops and hotels in the east end of London. These details came from my late father. My grandfather was Jethro (possibly Henry Emson) Medcalf (Ellen and Jethro's son) who came to New Zealand. He married Hannah Jacobsen (my paternal grandmother) and they had one child, my father Jethro Eric Medcalf (1919 - 2004). Hannah was originally Swedish and her family lived in Poplar, east London. My father had three children - 2 sons and a daughter (me!). I would love to find more details (and a family tree) for my branch of the Medcalf family. I also have photos of all family mentioned in this post plus (obviously)family history post 1919.

Cheers
Linda Clifton (nee Medcalf)

James Medcalf of Ky married to Mary Rebecca Rizer

Seeking further details on the family of James Medcalf who married Mary Rebecca Rizer in 1818, Nelson Co., Ky. James Medcalf was the son of Ignatius Metcalf sr. By the 1850 census the elder James Medcalf and son James are in Edmonson co, Kentucky. So it would seem Rebecca Rizer Medcalf had died by 1850.

A list of the children of James and Rebecca Medcalf would seem to be: Elizabeth b. 1825, John and Sarah both born early 1830s, James b. Feb 1834, and Nancy b. 1840.
I am also searching for information on Ada Pearl who was married to James Savage Owens. I am doing the Owens tree. All that I have on them is that they had a son named John A. Owens born about 1908 in Indiana. The son was not listed in the 1920 census, perhaps he had died. I would like to hear from you concerning their family.

Hello! Walter John Medcalf Senior and Junior are my grandfather and great grandfather in law. I may be able to get some material on either of these men, I have visited Walter John and wife Dulcie M White's gravesites here in Australia but did not know Walter Senior and Bertha also immigrated out here until today. I have seen you have done a massive amount of research on this family. Another lady, Ethel Medcalf, Walter John Juniors daughter, is also on this site, but has very limited online material. Not sure if you hve been in contact with her.
Regards
Karen Medcalf

I am looking for members of the family of Benjamin Medcalf. He was born in 1832 in Middlesex, England, and died in 1887 in Islington. Married to Anne Jane Harvey in 1854. They had the following children: Benjamin Earnest, Walter John, Ann Elizabeth, Frederick George, Henry (Harry) Heardley, Emma, Edith, Edwin (twin), Edward (twin), George, Florence, Georgina and Louisa Maud.

Most of the family emigrated to US in 1887 aboard the ship Italy. Most of them stayed in Minnesota.

I have been visiting graveyards here in the Twin Cities and have been able to find the graves of several members of this family. Most of those who came in the 1880s are buried in Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis or Oaklawn in St. Paul. I have photos of all graves that we found.

I would like to make contact with any members of Benjamin's family and share information.

Edward’s death certificate list his father name as John, b. AL, date unknown; mother’s name unknown, b. PA. Edward married Margaret Jane “Collie” SKELTON in Jackson Co., AL in 1893. I am trying to find any information on this family prior to1893. Family stories mention coal miners and Black Dutch heritage. Edward’s brothers are William W. born PA - 1874, Henry C. born PA -1876, and possibly a John and George.

Edward and Margaret’s children are: Delbert b. 1894, Dewey b. 1898, Mamie G. b. 1902, Zada b. 1904, Hubert b. 1906, and Hattie b. 1909. All children were born in AL. Dewey and Hubert moved to Texas around Mt. Pleasant area after 1930. Hubert worked for a Gas and Oil Refinery there. Mamie, Hattie (and possibly Zada too) went to Oklahoma City area. They took their mother, Margaret to OK after Edward died in 1935. Margaret is buried in Cleveland, OK. Delbert went to Oklahoma, Texas, and California but settled down in Jackson Co., AL.

Mamie married (FNU) Summer and had twin boys, Clyde and Claude before going to OK. Last known, Claude was living outside of OK City. Delbert married Julia Maynor in Jackson Co., AL around 1913 and had nine (9) children. Dewey married Zola (LNU) in Jackson Co., AL and had at least three (3) children.

I have more information on this family after 1893 but can not seem to find anything before Edward’s birth (1871) and why they returned to AL. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.
