I am interested in the info you have re: Josephine Medlin and her children. I show that Josephine was married to an Allen C Hodge (Jan, 1898) and that he is the father of Siddie and her siblings. I do remember hearing that there was some sort of scandal involving Allen. My grandmother was Siddie and if you have a copy of her death certificate, I would love to see it.
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Kathy

Could you look in your vast research to see if you have a Martha Medlin who lived in Webbers Falls OK (Indian Territory) in 1892? She married W L boon or William Boon in 1892 and they had a son named Johny about 1892 or 1893 in Dog Town Indian Territory. According to family history, Martha died about 1895 or so. I believe William was a "renter" in Indian Territory until about 1898 or 1899. He rented from T G Overstreet most of that time. Any information would be appreciated. Mary

John R Medlin b. abt. 1869-1874 in NC

I am searching for information on John R(obert) Medlin born around 1869-1874 in North Carolina. He is listed as the spouse of Josephine Medlin on her death certificate as well as the father of several of her children on their death certificates. Josephine Medlin was born 11 Aug 1869 in NC and died 24 Aug 1935 in Little River, Wake Co., NC. I have found Josephine in the 1880 NC Census living in Harris, Franklin Co., NC. She is found in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 NC Census' living in Little River, Wake Co., NC. She is often listed as "Joe Medlin".

The "rumor" is that she was not married to the father of her children (he had another family I hear), that they were both Medlin's, that it was a scandal and the children were often teased in the community.

Josephine's children were:
Myrtle Medlin
Novie Medlin (1888 – 1978)
Jasper Robert Medlin Sr (1893 – 1972) My gr gr grandfather
Burbon Medlin (1894 – 1918)
Adna Medlin (1897 – 1986)
Siddie Bernice Medlin (1903 – 1953)
Mortos Joseph Medlin (1909 – 1979)

I am seeking any information on John R Medlin, Josephine (her father was Lazarus "Kit" Medlin) and their parents/children.

Thank you!

April

Does any of this sound right? From around Wilson NC I think. I'm living in Valdosta Ga now. If you have any info please share because I've hit a dead end or am just not researching right.

Thanks so much!

Loveit Medlin Murphy
Loveitdiane@aol.com

I have two stories told to my uncle by his father (Henry Lee Medlin's grandson). The first happened after Henry was captured by the Union soldiers. He and another prisoner were very hungry. I gather that the Union soldiers didn't have any food for their horses because they were feeding them crackers so Henry and the other prisoner crawled over to where the horses were eating and ate crackers dropped on the ground. Then, when the soldiers weren't looking, they crawled into the woods and hid. When the soldiers came to look for them, they started making noises like wild hogs hoping that the soldiers wouldn't think it was really them. Needless to say, it did not work because, as you now, Henry ended up in Elmira Prison.
And the other story, which also took place during the Civil War: Henry came upon a man sitting up against a tree. The man had been blinded, I am assuming from a head wound. The man told Henry he was hungry. All Henry had was some bread but he gave it to the man and told him "Take this bread and we will be back for you." When Henry and the other soldiers came back, Henry saw that another man (I'm assuming a soldier but I don't know if he was Confederate or Union) had stolen the blind man's bread. Henry promptly shot the thief between the eyes, got the bread and gave it back to the blind man. Now, I can't be sure these stories are true but it makes for good stuff to pass down, doesn't it?
