You should check variant spellings of the name, esp since you know yours did change. I've found 12 variant spellings. Many are misspelled by interpretation.
I'm working on a book of the Melicans. My email: deodell@mac.com

My mother, Margaret, was 4 months old at the time of his death. Uncle John was the only boy in the family of 5. I'd say I could help you with your chart. Just let me know what you need.
Hi, Amy!
Sounds like we are from the same tree! My grandfather was Thomas Melican, Carnakella, Newmarket-on-Fergus. He had been back and forth to the US, as had my grandmother, Mary Halpin. My granfather died in 1923 when my mom was only 4 months old. I'd say the Thomas Melican Christmas cards could have been to my first cousin who passed away in 1998. Would love to hear from you and compare notes a bit more.
All the best, Rita Montgomery

Hi! Thanks for the reply. My great-grandfather was Michael Melican and my greatgrandmother would have been Anne McMahon. My great grandparents were married in Carrigerry Church in 1870. My grandfather, Thomas Melican, was born 1875. The island that my great-grandfather came from was Inismacnaghtan. In 1828 there were apparently 2 families of Melicans in Newmarket-on-Fergus. That family history you mentioned sounds interesting.Would love to hear more and if I can be of any help, let me know.
Thanks! Rita Montgomery

Hi Rita,
Here is the information that I have on the 4 siblings that I know of:
-My great grandfather, Michael Martin Melican (1875-1959) came from Newmarket on Fergus and arrived in the US around 1899/1900. He lived in Brookline, MA.
- Sibling: Daniel Melican (1871- ?), arrived 1892, lived in Brookline, MA (a street behind Michael)
- Sibling: Peter Kerin Melican (1892-1957), arrived around 1899, lived in South Boston, MA
- Sibling: Thomas Melican, Ireland (not sure if he came to US) My parents remember sending Christmas cards to a Thomas Melican in Carnakella (a relative of my grandfather). I am going to try to find the old address book. Maybe the birthdates will help in matching up.
Thanks - Amy (amymelican@verizon.net)

The names you mentioned sound very familiar, there were at least 11 Melicans in this family and they originated from Melican's Island, Rineanna, Newmarket-on-Fergus. Let me know if this fits with your info.
Thanks! Rita

I do not have your Margaret Melican on the chart but I got that generation from church records which were not always complete. I have been in contact with quite a few people who are descendants from Mortimer Melican and have visited the ancestral land in Tubber, Lissycasey and taken notes from the graveyard which has a number of Landers graves. Please keep in touch. Eliz. Melican Odell

Nigel, Did you receive my Melican Emigration chart on excel? Can you send me information on your family group. The Melican name was also recorded in northern Ireland on 1796 Spinning Wheel Survey.
I am hoping one more trip to Ireland to arrange a family reunion in 2005. Some families emigrated entirely and no one left in those towns, also many descendants in other towns.
I have a headstone rubbing of the earliest recording of the Melican name if you would like a copy. eodell@ptialaska.net

Hello Margaret
Yes, I had an Aunty Margaret, now sadly no longer with us. I would love to come to a reunion (depending on commitments), though can't promise too much for the other UK Melicans, who tend to be home people. I am the roamer as my work in tea takes me all over the world (off to India this weekend, and just back from ex Soviet Georgia at end of October).

I did get my sister Elaine Melican (now Darkin) and her husband John, my wife Helga, and my nephew Liam Melican and his wife Ingrid over to Dungarvan, Co.Waterford this summer to take my father's ashes back "home". Elaine and John liked it so much they returned within three months for a holiday.

Co.Clare for preference as a reunion venue as I might persuade some other UK kin to come there, Boston as second, but all you may get is me!

Please do keep me up to speed with your plans.

Best regards

Nigel

Nigel, are you interested in a family reunion? There are many, many Melicans here in the US, quite a few left in County Clare, a few in Australia and now we know you in UK. (Actually I knew that there were Melicans in England, even Margaret Melicans in England...) You are the only Nigel that I know of!
We are trying to get a family reunion together and wanted to know if you want any input as to where, when etc.
If it is in US. it should be in Boston or Worcester MA as this is where many of them came, but we are open to NY or any other place. A reunion in Clare would be fabulous though!
Let us know what you are thinking!

Margaret Melican

Dear Cousin Elizabeth

Apologies for confusing your message with one from Margaret Melican - not used to so many new kin! And using my wife's computer as mine is virus beset today.

Herewith my reply to your email:

Re: Melican
Author: Nigel Melican Date: 11 Nov 2003 8:48 AM GMT
Classification: Query

Hello Cousin Margaret

It seems strange to have found Melicans outside of my immediate family. We have been in UK since my grandfather came over to London in around 1905. He stepped aboard a sailing ship in Dungarvan harbour in his early teens and jumped ship in London, and never went home. All our known family is from him and his brother who followed him (or it may have been the other way round). There were more siblings all I believe in Dungarvan, Co, Waterford, and I have some of their names on a family tree that my father put together. It would be most interesting to compare this with the emigration information that you have.

Most of my known family history is of my great grandfather Melican's wife's side of the family - the Hydes, then a fair sprinkling of Briens and Keatings, all well represented in the local cemetery - but no Melicans there! So they were either rogues or emigrated (or both). I believe (but know not how I came to the idea - possibly from my father) that my great grandfather came to Waterford from the west coast - so he might be part of your Co.Clare tribe - that would be exciting to trace him back there.

If you would be so kind as to email me your Excel spreadsheet as you suggest, I will see if I can dig out our hardcopy family "twig" and add to it. You can most easily mail to nigel@teacraft.com

All best wishes

Nigel

Hi Nigel,

I had posted the original message looking for info on the Melicans. I did get in touch with some, including Margaret. I noticed that you mentioned Dungarvan. I have pictures of a trip my dad, Jim Burke Sr, took to Ireland with his brother Tom and his father, Jack Burke. This was in the early-mid 1930s. He had captions by some of the pictures mentioning his cousins, and one of them shows him with his cousin Kathleen in Dungarvan. So I'm guessing they were quite possibly Melicans. Some of the pictures were taken at someones farm. If you want, I could scan a couple of the pictures and see if you recognize anyone or anything in them.

Would you happen to know a Kathleen Jones? This is most likely the Kathleen who is in the picture I have, and I'm guessing Jones was her married name. I found a couple of postcards she sent to my dad in the early 1950s. They were cousins, but I don't know what family she was from - she could even be from my grandmothers side of the family. She lived in Delgany, Co. Wicklow at the time.

Jim Burke

He left in around 1905 and never returned, though my father John Augustine Melican went back several times both before and after WWII, and he and I went on his 80th birthday (1991) to look up the relatives - none of the Melican line was found.

I have a few names from my grandfather's generation if you are actively looking for links, and would be glad to swap Melican information with you.

Best regards

Nigel Melican

Hi Margaret

I see you are always on the look out for Melicans - there are a handful of us over in England - two lines, one my blood relatives and the other we are not sure about how they fit in. My grandfather James Melican came over to London from Dungarvan, Co Waterford in about 1905, as cabin boy on a sailing ship. Jumped ship and never went back! We took my father's ashes back to Dungarvan this year - he had been in my bureau waiting for this for about 8 years, but was always a patient man! I have a lot of family tree for Irish maternal connections over several generations - Hydes, Keatings, Briens, but precious little for the Melican line, which I suspect came down from the west coast (galway, or Connemara) rather than being truly Dungarvan based.

Happy to swap what we have with you.

Best regards

Nigel

Dear Joan,
My grandmother was a first cousin to Delia Melican (Hurley). Their husbands were brothers. there are Egans also in the family tree - my great grandfather (Thomas Melican) was married twice. A daughter from his first marriage (Bridget I think) married an Egan. They emigrated in the l870's or so and went to Vermont. I do have a lot of information about the Melicans and Hurleys.
