Mellard family, AL, seeks to connect slave holder to former slave with same surname

I believe Rev. James Harry Millard/Mellard/Mallard b. abt. 1778 in SC and living in Autauga Co (1840) Pike Co (1850) and then Macon Co where he died in 1855 to be the original slave holder of James Mallard (African American) who lived in Wilcox Co. in the 1860's, d. in Coy in 1919. Rev. James H's son J R G Millard/Mellard/Mallard however appears on the BLM as buying land in Wilcox Co in 1831 but I can't find evidence that either of them ever lived in Wilcox Co, but in the 1860 slave schedule there is a Daniel F Mellerd who held 11 slaves, one of which I believe to be James Mallard (b. abt 1842-1919). Daniel, also a minister is Jas R G Mellerd's son. On James Mallard's (African American) pension, under "were you a slave, name previous slave owners etc." he put "Mallard only". I'm not sure which of the two older Mallards were the original owner. It would appear Daniel was the last holder. If anyone has any further info, would love to hear from you, esp if you have a copy of either will that might name A.A. James. Rev. J H Mellerd died in 1855. Jas J R G Mellerd, his son, died in 1863. Not sure on Daniel. So A.A. James could have been passed from father to son to son again or grandfather to grandson too.

Hello Robert,

The line you mentioned here, is that the line of Willam Mellard and Sussanah Harry of the 1750's?
If so, can you help me with citations for that marriage and Susannah's up-line? Please contact me at bert3014@gmail.com.
Also, I am interested in the DNA study you are conducting.

Regards, Bert Pennington

Hi Robert,
I noticed another posting by you with the name Mallard. If that is the name you are researching I can tell you that most of the Mallard's from Massachusetts come here in the late 1800's from Newfoundland. They were mostly in the printing industry. They were originally from Ireland.

My info about D W Mellard is limited to the Adams Run area. In fact, I think I got most of it from your Uncle David.

If you don't already know about it, The Colleton Co. website has a listing of the 1890 SC Gazetteer and DW is listed twice. Also, the Mellard family in Jedburg is listed. The info is at:
http://www.oldplaces.org/colleton/Gazetteer.html

Regards, Robert Hughes

He was born 01-Feb-1881 and died in 1920 as a result of a street car accident.
Walker Henry Mellard was a conductor for the city of Charleston, SC street car line and was run over by a city trolly. He and his wife are buried in the Mellard family cemetary in Jedburg, SC near his parents.
Regards, Robert Hughes

Hello,

My name is Michael D. Mellard and I now live in Atlanta, Georgia. I was born in Charleston, South Carolina until I was 8 years old. I was born in 1962.

My father is William H. Mellard (born in 1942 in Charleston, SC) & my mother is Sandra A. Mellard (Hooper). She was born in 1944 in Charleston, SC.

My fathers parents are as follows...His fathers name was Edmond Simmons Mellard (Born in 1911 and died in 1979) & my fathers mother was Bessie Mellard (Walters). She was born in 1908 and died in 1995. They both are buried in a big cemetary off Hwy. 61 in Charleston, SC. I am not sure where my grandmother was born; but my grandfather was born in Jedburg, SC. (pretty sure).

Hope this helps,

Michael

Hello Travis,
Nancy is still one of my brick walls. I thought that I had a good lead that would make her the daughter of Jacob Bruck. Bruck owned land in Four Hole's near William and Susannah Mellard. Bruck's name was later changed to Bridge.
So far, I don't have any good evidence that places Nancy Bridge at Four Holes (in the SC lowcountry) or places Thomas Mellard physically in the upstate with the known Bridges families.(Greenville, etc)
Regards, Robert

If you are researching the South Carolina Mellard/Mallard family; Pat Sabin and friends have posted a photo of Harriot Eleanor (Raysor) Mellard on their "Raysor Family Gatherings" website. Harriet Raysor married Col. William Henry Mellard in Ridgeville, SC in 1859. Wm. H. Mellard was the son of Thomas J. Mellard and his first wife.
Wm. H. Mellard died during the civil war and Harriet then married John Thames.
The website is at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~raysor/Thames.html

1880 British census w/Mellard surnames

I have indexed all the Mellard surnames that appear in the UK (England) census for 1880. There are 101 Mellard surnames all together. With most names appearing in the counties (Shires) of York, Stafford, and Derby. If any Mellard searcher thinks they have a connection with the Mellards in England, this may be of some help to them. I'll be glad to share especially if you will share your US Mellard information with me. It's in MS Word and about 60 kb.
Regards, Robert Hughes

The Elisha Mellard cemetery is on private land in west Berkeley county. Across the line in Holly Hill is the large Shingler-Mellard family cemetery and in Dorchester county in Summerville is a Mellard family cemetery. There are also other cemeteries containing Mellards but not dedicated directly to the Mellard family.

Regards, Robert Hughes
