Hello. I am also looking for a Margaret Neilson MELROSE who was born in Monzie or Logiealmond Perthshire Scotland on 21 August 1857. Her parents were John MELROSE and Jean/Jane McCALLUM. They were living at Banchory near Aberdeen. Some time after 1871 the gfamily moved to Ireland and then in 1884 most of the family moved to New Zealand. Margaret did not come to NZ and I have lost track of her. The marriage date of 1883 could indicate that Margaret went to the USA. Do you have any more details of her wedding such as a marriage certificate or an indication of her age.
Regards
Grant Ancell
These two ladies are still a mysteryn to me. They were born in Scotland in 1857 and 1863 to parents John MELROSE and Jane (McCALLUM). Their parents emigrated to NZ in 1884 but they did not come with the parents. Margaret may have got married to a Peter FITZGERALD in 1878.

Hi fellow Melrose researchers,

A general question, has anybody done any DNA testing along the line?

I am considering doing the mtDNA which would put me back to Mary Jane Miller nee Melrose, but would then follow her mother Wilkinson.

I have searched for a one name DNA study to no avail maybe I have overlooked something? I am torn between Family Tree DNA and 23andme, does anybody have any experience with anyone?

Cheers
Rhonda

Re: Melrose Elizabeth

By doing a search of the 1901 census I see that the eldest was born about 1893 (aged 8), we also establish that all the children were (supposedly) born in Scotland - from this we can assume the marriage also took place in Sct.

The 1891 census reveals William lived with his parents and brother and that he was unemployed. Again assuming he was single in this census you could presume he was married between 1891 & 1893, this gives you a 5 year span to easily concentrate on.

A search at scotlandspeople reveals 21 marriages of "Melrose" using soundex between 1891-1895. Might be lucky?

You probably have all that info yourself but I thought I would also show others how to narrow something down if they needed to ;)

Or even where they died would be helpful.

When the first child was born?

These facts would help build a timeline to focus on.

Cheers, Rhonda

I am searching for information on Margaret Melrose who married William S Hawkins. My information has them married in May of 1883. They resided in Beaver Co Pa to the best of my knowledge. William worked on the railroad I believe. They had 2 children I am sure of Jean and Melrose but I strongly believe there are more.

I am intereseted in any and all information on parents, siblings, and children of Margaret.

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from others researching this family.

nrevans

Catherine Melrose

I was hoping if anyone could help me find some information on my great grandmother Catherine Melrose. I don't really have much details on her apart from she was born around 1895, I am presuming in the Liverpool area, but cannot be certain of this. Her father was called Edward and he was a printer's compositor.
Catherine married her first husband Joseph Reil in 1916 and they had one son, James. Sadly Catherine became a widow not long after. She then married my great grandfather Thomas Steen in 1925. We think Catherine may have had a brother who was also called Thomas and possibly an aunt named Emily who lived in London.
Any help would be appreciated.
Regards,
Amy

MELROSE, MELLROSS & MELLROSE Family at Felton, NBL, ENGLAND

MILLROSS, MELLROSS, and MELROSE Family at FELTON, NORTHUMBERLAND, ENGLAND

This is another query for information about the old WIDDRINGTON ARMS INN at Felton, Northumberland.
and my MELROSE family that operated this inn or public house for quite a number of years.. perhaps before 1800 and on into the period about 1875 or so.. James MELROSE and his wife, Margaret ROBSON MELROSE and his son,
John MELROSE ran the business for many years and John's widow, Hannah HUNTLEY MELROSE continued to run the inn and saddlery business after John died in Jan 1840. Hannah married again in 1851 to James WATSON and they continued to run the business on into the 1870's.. James WATSON died in 1872 and Hannah died in 1878 and that is on her third son, William Edward MELROSE's tombstone in the old Amble cemetery.

A first and only son of John's first marriage, James MELROSE, emigrated to the USA about 1834 and settled
at Canton, Fulton co., Illinois where he had one child, also names James Washington MELROSE. James died in Jul 1860 at Canton. The child, James W. MELROSE moved on with his stepmother and stepfather abt. 1871 to San Francisco
California where he married and had two childen, Mary and James Robinson MELROSE. Mary married Clarence BEVIERS.
James R. married Catherine STRUBEL in Marin co., Jan 1907.

The first son of the second marriage, John MELROSE, emigrated to South Australia abt. 1849 and married
a widow, Jannett Williamson Wharrier. They had several children and that research is ongoing.
The second child was Thomas George MELROSE, baptised at Felton in May 1821, died 1831, buried Felton.
The third child was William Edward MELROSE, baptised at Felton in Oct 1826. He married Isabella HUNTLEY in 1848
and they lived at Amble where he operated a butcher shop.
The fourth child was Joseph MELROSE, baptised in 1830.. may have emigrated to Australia also.. research ongoing
The fifth child was another Thomas George MELROSE, baptised 1832, he may have lived in Felton all of his life. died 1872 at Felton?
The sixth child was Jane MELROSE, baptised Jul 1833, died Mar 1842 age 10, buried Felton.
The seventh child was Matthew Robson MELROSE, baptised May 1835 at Felton. It is unknown what happend to him.
The eighth child was Hugh Hudson MELROSE, born Oct 1837 at Felton, Hugh emigrated to the USA and on to Colorado
Territory . He married Sarah Elizabeth WATSON, divorced 1879, two living sons, James Watson MELROSE, b. 1867 at Pueblo, and Joseph Matthew MELROSE, b. 1874, born at Wetmore, CO. Joseph was my granddad. He died in 1953 in Durango, Colorado.. my dad was Hugh Hudson MELROSE.. he was born in 1907 at Mancos, Colorado and died 12 Jun 1944 in Normandy during the D Day invasion of France.
He was in Co. G of the 357th Inf. Regt., 90th Div. US Army.

There are two or three very early burial listings in the old Felton C of E parish records for the MELROSE family at Felton.
Tho's Mellross, 1771, Thomas Milross, 14 April 1873 and John Mellrose, 24 Jul 1774. There is not a burial listing for the wife of the first John MELROSE and I am assuming that this person was the father of our James MELROSE that was baptized at Long Framlington Presbyterian Chapelry on 9 Jun 1760.. so what happened to her.. did she die and was her body taken back to the Borders or ?? James and Margaret MELROSE baptized their children at LongFramlington but John and Hannah baptised their childen in the C of E parish church at Felton and I have those records.
However, I can't seem to be able to get any farther back than the baptism of my James MELROSE at Long Framlington in 1760.. did this family come down from the Borders after the 1745 uprising?? still looking and I really appreciate any help in solving this BRICK wall of mine.
I have a lot of information that I am willing to share.
Wendell Hugh MELROSE
wendelmelrose@earthlink.net
I have found some information about the first son of
John Melrose and Hannah Huntly. This son was also named
John. He emigrated to South Australia about 1848/49 and
married Jessie Wharrier (Williamson) at Port Adalaide, SA. in 1849.
They may have had three children, living in several places
in Victoria, Australia. I believe that Thomas stayed in Felton and died there abt. 1873. William Edward Melrose died at Amble 23 May 1878. He had at least two sons, William Edward and John Thomas Melrose. The first Thomas
George Melrose died in 1831. A sister, Jane , died in 1842.
I am still searching for Joseph, b. 1830 and Matthew, b. 1835. My grandfather, Joseph Matthew Melrose, b. 1874 at
Wetmore, Colorado, was named for them, I believe.
Their grandparents were James and Margret Robson Melrose of
Felton. James was in the Royal Artillery, 1778 - 1781, mustering out at age 21. Hoping that someone can help me break this brick wall.
Wendell Hugh Melrose

James Robinson Melrose, son of James W. Melrose and Mary Condon of San Francisco, CA.

I am still looking for information about the son of
James Washington Melrose and Mary Hinton Condon. He was
born in San Francisco about 12 Jul 1885. That is the date
on his 1917 Draft registration. His father was James W. Melrose born abt 23 Feb 1847 at Canton, Fulton county, Illinois. James W. married Mary Hinton Condon in 1877.
They had two children, Mary C. and James R. Melrose.
James R. Melrose married Katie (Catherine)Strubel in Marin
county abt. 15 Jan 1907. Mary married Clarence Beviers
in San Francisco on 26 Jun 1907. Clarence was a carpenter.
They later lived at Redwood City, CA., where Mary died
7 Aug 1929. Katie & James had four children, all girls.
Ruth Elizabeth, b. 25 may 1909, Mildred Flora, b. 4 Jun 1911, Margaret Claire, b. 4 Jun 1911, and Viola, b. 16 Mar 1913. Viola died 16 May 1914. The three girls were in the
Roman Catholic orphanage in 1920. They were adopted by
Frank R. Strubel, brother to Katie abt. 1927 The twins
graduated from Mission High School in San Francisco in 1931.
All three girls married and each had only one child.
I have been able to locate and talk to two of these children and they are my 3rd cousins. What we really all
would like to know is what happened to James R. Melrose..
and why he gave up his daughters. he was living and working for a farmer in Salinas in 1920 and was remarried.
I believe that he is the James R. Melrose that is shown
living in a boarding house in Los Angeles, CA in the 1920
census. Ancestry shows him with a voters registration
in 1932 but nothing later. So what really happened to him
and where is he buried? Was he a railroad worker? I don't know. I also would like to know more about Mary c. Melrose
Is she buried in Redwood City and if so, where? I do not have death certificates.
Katie and James divorced abt. 1915 and she
married Joseph Reilly and had another child, Elvira b. 24 Feb 1916. Katie died on 16 Sept 1916 of childbirth complications. Elvira lived until 1999.. the twins lived
until 5 May 2007. They both died within a day of each other. If anyone has any information that might help locate where James R. Melrose died and where he is buried.
Please email me off list or ?? wendelmelrose@earthlink.net

Re: John Melrose of Felton , Northumberland , England

Rhonda, all that I can tell you is that my Thomas Melrose died at Dublin, Ireland, on 16 Feb 1834.. I have no other information about him except for his baptism at Felton
on 1 Dec 1795. His parents were James Melrose and Margaret Robson of Felton. His death is recorded on the Melrose tombstone in the Felton churchyard. As far as the marriage of John Melrose to Jessie Wharrier at Port Adalaide, South Australia.. it was printed in the Newcastle Courant on 30 Aug 1850. The freeBDM's list a marriage of William Wharrier and Jessie Williamson in 1847 at Newcastle and I found a death notice also in the Newcastle Courant..
1848? At Mount Barker, in South Australia, on the 7th Feb., last, much respected, Mr. William Wharrier, mason, a native of Felton, Northumberland. So I believe that we know Jessie (Jeannett) surname before marriage was Williamson.
So I am searching for descendants of this brother of my greatgrandfather that emigrated to Australia abt. 1848/49?.. I also believe that most Melrose, Mellrose, people came from the borders area of Scotland, some didn't go far south, like my people but others, went to Canada, the USA, Australia and New Zealand
email me off list if you want… wendelmelrose@earthlink.net

John Melrose of Felton , Northumberland , England

This man was the first child of my MELROSE family that lived
at Felton, Northumberland during the early 1800's..
John was baptised on 18 Jul 1819 at St. Michaels & All Saints church in Felton. His parents were John Melrose and
Hannah Huntly (Huntley). His grandparents were James and Margaret Robson Melrose. Their business was saddles and harness making and they ran a small public house or inn named the Widdrington Arms. John emigrated to South Australia about 1848 or so. He married Jeanett Wharrier
at Port Adelaide, SA on 20 Oct. 1849 He was listed as a
saddler. Recent replies to my earlier query seems to indicate that Jannett's birth surname was Moncrieff or Williams. She was a widow of William Wharrier, mason,Felton,Northumberland
Looking for descendants and more information about this family. He was a brother to my greatgrandfather, Hugh Hudson Melrose that emigrated to the USA and on to Colorado
Territory about 1857-62. Thank you all for your replies.
Wendell Hugh Melrose

Any information about her
life would be much appreciated.
I do not know what happened to James R. Melrose is still an ongoing effort.
The three children of James and Katie Strubel-Melrose were adopted by their uncle Frank Strubel sometime in the early 1920's.
Katie married Joseph O'Reilly and had one more daughter.
Elvira. All of the girls have descendants..
Margaret and Mildred passed away suddenly in May of 2007
within a day of each other.

I am looking for the descendants of William & Janet Melrose Peebles/Ayr who sailed to New Zealand in 1913 on the Ruahine with their four children, Christina, Janet, Maggie and William. I have found the graves of William,Janet and William Junior in Rangiwahia but with no computer based searches in NZ I have otherwise drawn a blank.

My grandmother Christina died in childbirth in 1928 as is buried in Mangatainoka Cemetery.

My dad was originally brought up by his grandparents in Rangiwahia but returned to live with his father when he remarried. He cannot remember Maggie or Janet at all only Uncle Bill. 70 years on his memory is not too good!

If you are searching for Melroses in Scotland perhaps you may have come across some others

Thanks

Lynne Taylor

Where is she buried?
Laying & Tinney Mortuary Files Index
BEVlER, Mary Melrose, 7 Aug 1929, Redwood City, California
Can someone do a lookup for an obituary for her?
I still cannot find what happened to her brother, James R.
Melrose. I believe that he was born about 1885 in San Francisco but cannot find any records of his death.
I did find the three girls, Ruth , Mildred and Margaret and
they have all passed away.. Mildred and Margaret died in May
2007. I have contacted their children but no one knows what
happened to James. Are there any birth records from about
1875 - 1890 available in San Francisco ? Their mother was
Mary Hinton Condon. Father was James W. Melrose. Mary died
in 1901 and James W. died in Jan 1906.
Thanks to all that reply to this query.

Dear Lisa
It was an old post (from 2004, I think) but you were searching for info on Mary (Minnie) Jane Melrose and Robert J James. My wife is a descendent of Annie's sister Rachel Henrietta (Etta) James. I have some family history information. Please be in touch
David

Mary C. Melrose and James Robinson Melrose of San Francisco

This is a followup on an earlier query about this family.
Mary (May) C. Melrose married Clarence Beviers before 1920.
I found a listing for a marriage license for James R. Melrose and Katie Strubel dated Jan 1907 in Marlin county, California.
I Also found Ruth E., Margaret and Mildred Melrose listed with Frank G. Strubel in the 1930 census in San Francisco. He apparently adopted the girls.. he may have been an uncle.
The girls are listed in the Roman Catholic orphanage in
San Francisco in 1920 with the Melrose name. Does anyone
know what happened to this family? Their greatgrandfather,
James Melrose, died at Canton , Fulton county, Illinois in
1860. He emigrated from Felton, Northumberland, England
sometime before 1845.. and was a brother to my greatgrandfather, Hugh Hudson Melrose, that emigrated to
the USA about 1857 to the Colorado Territory.
