I see a bit more info from this Post-Em on WorldConnect:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
He was born 25 Dec 1831 to Jonathan A. Crow & Hannah Grimes. Lydia Jane was born 25 Dec 1839

The 1850 shows a Belinda and I am guessing that she is Pascal's sister.

United States Census, 1850 > Missouri > St. Louis county
1414 1414 Hannah Crow, 53, KY
Belinda Crow, 35, MO
Paschal Crow, 18, Farmer, MO

I'm not totally convinced that Paschal and Philip are the same man. But it is really a huge coincidence that they both have a wife named Sophia and the both lived in the same area of St Louis county, MO. I think if there are church records that show his children's baptisms, etc., then we would know for sure. If you write to the St Louis county genealogical or historical societies maybe they could help find the correct church in that area.

There seems to be some really good info on:
http://stlgs.org/

After making phone calls to cousins this am I did find out info that goes along with what you found out....

My cousin said that she remembers a story that two great aunts shared many yrs ago - After Lydia died, Pascal took the children to his mother, Melanie, and left for Ky or VA. The story goes that he sold (illegally) some of the family land located in Spanish Lake, MO. When he returned he brought back a wife with him.

My cousin said he had always been a farmer. At least that is what she had heard.

Oh my goodness - thank you for all of this 'food for thought'. Pascal's daughter, Susan (Crow) Carter, was my G grandmother. Growing up, I did not hear the story about Pascal's 2nd marriage. I have never heard the story from my grandmother, her sisters or my mother. You would think something like this would be passed down or at least talked about.

I am totally confused about the name 'Phillip'. Quite a mystery. I appreciate your help very much!

Now I am seriously confused and I probably should quit for the night.

I found a Sophia Crow in the Bellefontaine Cemetery. This would be nw of their home on Forest Park Blvd.

This burial listing does not give her maiden name as Menke. But I did wonder how Sophia could have had two children with Pascal by the 1870 census. So, perhaps, she wasn't really "Miss" Menke when she married Pascal? Perhaps she was really Mrs. Mary Sophia (Gay) Menke?

Sophie M. Gay Crow
Birth: Nov. 3, 1843
Louisiana, USA
Death: Jul. 2, 1929
Saint Louis
St. Louis City
Missouri, USA

Husband was Phillip A. Crow.
Father was E. J. Gay.
Mothers maiden name was Hines.

Burial: Bellefontaine Cemetery

I did see in the MO marriage records that Lydia married Pascal/Paschall on 7 Jul 1853 and then Miss Mary Sophia Menke married him on 14 Apr 1869. Mary's marriage record didn't give their ages or name either party's parents. It just said they were both from St Louis county.

Then in the 1870 cenus I see P Crow and Sophia M with two children. If that is Pascal, then where are his children with Lydia?

1870 - Missouri > St Louis > Central > 135
786 825 Crow, P.A., head, male, white, 30, Hat Merchant, 10,000, 20,000, MO
Sophia M., 26, female, w, Keeping House, MO
Lillie, 2, female, w, La
Eddie J., 1, male, w, MO
Bridget, 24, female, w, Domestic servant, Ireland
Ellen, 22, female, w, Domestic servant, Ireland
Maria, 36, female, w, Domestic servant, Ireland
Thereby, Mary, 15, female, black, Domestic servant, La
I forgot to mention the date of the marriage between Henry Menke and Anna Recker was April 10, 1855 in St Louis, Missouri. There was a Henry Menke that died in St. Louis on 10/21/1903, but I found his obit and no info about Joseph (or Theodor) was there. Another Henry Menke died in St. Louis on Nov 1 1905.....have not checked that obit yet. I am hoping that, if Henry was a sibling of Theodor, that there will be a mention of him in an obit.

According to the ship log Theodor resided in Bielefeld, but that is the only origination info I have for him besides what you found. Theodor was the executor of the estate of Frederic Werminghausen, but no relationship was mentioned in the estate papers.

There are two other early Menkes I am aware of:
Gerhard Menke, died 1888 (prob son of your Joseph)
Agnes Menke, died 1863 (possibly relative of Theodor and/or Joseph)

I have a copy of the marriage record of Joseph Menke and Mary Koester, which is how I came to know Joseph Menke's parentage. Mary Koester is the daughter of Anton Koester and Margaret Brundies (first marriage for both of them). They were married at St Marys in Brussels, Calhoun County, Illinois on Nov 6 1879. Joseph was 24 years old and Mary was 17, both of German extraction. Marriage was witnessed by H Baker and L Bundies and officiated by Rev B Winterhalter.

Please send me a message through the contact service so that we can privately exchange email addresses, so that I can share a scan of this document.

Me again. According to my file four children aside from Joe T 1877 and Theodore 1879 are connected to Joseph and Mary (Etteler).

So these children: Fransiska 1866, Mary 1871, John 1873 and Frank 1875, are children from Mary's previous marriage(s)?
Without your help i would have never figured out why these children were listed.

Also, i have the exact same info on Theodore, nothing more:

"Theodore Menke immigrated to the USA on October 02, 1867 aboard the SS Baltic from Bremen & Southampton to New York {Destination Calhoun County, Illinois/Traveled with Mary Zumdiek}. "

"In the 1870 census Theodore Menke was boarding with Fred & Mary Schanhorst in Calhoun County, Illinois.
Thank you so much for your reply. Joseph and Mary Koester were my brick wall. Joseph and Mary are my daughter's great grandparents. So, Henry and Anna Recker appear to be parents of Joseph. Your info has helped me greatly.

This is what i have for Joseph (8-26-1856):
According to family history Joseph and his brother (name unknown) came from Germany to Ellis Island together but were separated and both were orphaned.

"He was a prominent businessman (and saloon keeper) in Brussels, Calhoun Co., IL, for many years. He was a man of high character, and his word was always as good as his bond. He was a devout Catholic, a kind and indulgent father, a loving husband and in every way a good Christian and an upright citizen."

Source: 'Calhoun is My Kingdom', by George W. Carpenter, published by Dan Merkle Prtg. 1967: a church was constructed on the "NW corner of the Catholic Cemetery where the house of Joseph Menke, Sr. later stood".

I'm very new to ancestry.com and you are my first reply to an important query. Thank you.

Re: Theodore Menke

Theodor Menke's wife, Mary A Etteler, was widowed twice before she married him on Dec 2, 1876 at St Mary Church in Brussels. They only had two children together> Joseph Theodore Menke (known as Joe T Menke) and Theodore Menke (who died at a very young age). Apparently the 1880 census taker failed to quantify or document the surname of Theodor's step-children (note relationship of each child).

Mary Etteler married a Joseph Stillbrink prior to immigrating to Calhoun County on May 15, 1865 aboard the S/S Dorette. Mary had 2 children with Joseph Stillbrink before he died on Sep 18, 1868: Casper Henry Stilbrink (died at 2 years old) and Franciska Stillbrink who married Herman Schobernd. Mary's second marriage was on Apr 8, 1869 at St Marys to Anthony J Grothaus (spelled Greathouse by children). They had three children: Mary Greathouse, who married Stephen Maykovica; John Greathouse, who married Martha Jane Harpole; and Frank Greathouse. Anthony J Grothaus died Mar 17, 1875..and then Mary A Etteler married Theodor Menke.

I believe that Theodor Menke was a brother of Henry Menke, who married Anna Mary Recker in St Louis, Missouri in 1855. Henry moved to Calhoun County and his son Joseph Menke {born 1856}, married Mary Koester in Calhoun County, Illinois on Nov 6 1879. Theodor Menke arrived in New York on Oct 02, 1867 aboard the SS Baltic, which was bound from Bremen and a Henry Koester was also aboard.

The Anton Menke who is buried in St. Boniface Cemetery in Clinton, Illinois was my great-great Grandfather. His wife's name was Catherine Gramann. Is this the Anton Menke you are looking for? He came from Oldenburg, Germany, but that is all I know.

Pat Winship

Alot of time has passed so you might already have your answer. The four brothers were Ferdinand, Fritz (Frederick), Anton and Joseph. They emigrated with their mother in 1887. Frank Stiens was my great great grandmother's brother.

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. JOHN (SARAH) MENKE
APRIL 24, 1896

At 1:30 o'clock, on Thursday morning (April 23), at Kankakee hospital, occurred the death of Mrs. Sarah Menke, wife of Mr. John Menke, of this city, from inflammation of the brain.
Obit of Mrs. John (Mary) Menke 1895

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

MRS. JOHN (MARY) MENKE
APRIL 12, 1895

On Monday (April 8) afternoon at three o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. John Menke. Mrs. Menke has for many years been in poor health and her last illiness was of short duration, her death being the result of weak lungs.
Mary C. Cook Menke was born in Germany. When quite young she was thrown upon her own resources, and at the age of twenty-three she had accumulated enough money to come to America. After being in this country one year she married B. Mead in New York and afterwards moved to near El Paso. Three children were born to them, two of whom -- Theadore B. Mead, of Colfax, and Mrs. Amelia Eppelsheimer, of Roberts -- survive her. About six years after their marriage, Mr. Mead died. On Christmas day, 1863, she was united in marriage with John Menke and came to this vicinity, locating on a farm northeast of town, in 1868. They remained there until about eight years ago, when they removed to town, where they have since resided. Mr. and Mrs. Menke were the parents of five children, three sons and two daughters -- George W., Mrs. Fred Attig and Miss Mary J. Menke, of this city, and Henry J., of New York, with their father, surviving her. Besides the relatives above mentioned she leaves on brother in Chicago and two sisters -- Mrs. Fesenbeck, who resides in Iowa, and Mrs. T. Weinand, living northeast of town. At the time of her death, Mrs. menke was between 63 and 64 years old.
The funeral services were held from the German Evangelical church on Thursday morning. Rev. Haller delivered a short address in German and Rev. J.E. Mercer, of the M.E. church, made some appropriate remarks in English. The remains were laid to rest in the Chatsworth cemetery, a large concourse of sympathizing friends being in attendance.

I have four photo albums of the Menke family in Salinas Ca.
Starting 1906 and ending in what appears to be the early 30's. The oldest album belonged to Marie B. Menke. Other first names are Emma, Carl, Lita, Mamie, and Eleanor. I have obtained address of Dan and Helen Menke (in their 80's) in Salinas, along with a Marie at the same address.
I'm hoping to return these photos to the family if possible. I bought them at the Salvation Army thrift store in Reno NV recently-curious as to how they ended up in Reno
Thanks...Ronna Payne Larronna@aol.com

Re: Anna Menke and Bernard Rust of Cincinnati

I'm not familiar with your family, however I'm very curious if there might be a connection to my own. I have in my family sisters, Mary and Lizetta, one of which married a MENKE and the other married a RUST. Mary and Mr. Menke's children were born in or near Osnabrück and they emmigrated to the U.S. around 1849, settling in Jackson County, IN. I'm not sure when Lizetta and her husband Frederick RUST arrived in the U.S. but they were living in Jackson County, IN by 1860. For more details see the following thread.

http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.menke/30/mb.ashx

Joel

Re: Lizzette/Lizetta Menke

Cindy,

I looked at your site, but I don't recognize the Menke's on your list. The original poster, jrspls, is my brother btw. Here are some details on our Menke family that settled in Jackson County, IN around 1850.

Family tradition states that Mr. and Mrs. Menke came to the U.S. from Osnabrück with three or four young children including Elizabeth, Lizetta, and Louis. Shortly after the family's arrival, in 1849 or 1850, both parents died. Elizabeth was supposedly raised by a Lutheran minister and Lizetta and Louis were raised by their Aunt RUST. From my own research I've determined the following.

Mr. MENKE (died before 1850).
Mrs. Menke's given name was Mary and she was born abt. 1813 and died between 1850 and 1860, probably in Jackson County, IN.
Their Children:
1. Christian Menke (1837-1899) married Louisa Henke, lived most of his adult life in Dubois County, IN
2. Elizabeth Menke (1841-1934) married Frederick Speier, lived her adult life in Indianapolis, IN
3. Lizetta Menke (1842-1905) married Charles Otto, lived her adult life in Indianapolis, IN
4. Louis Menke (c1845-c1864) supposedly joined the Union Army and died while in service, buried in VA. (I've been unable to positivly indentify him in CW records.) The last record I have on him is in Jackson County, IN in 1860 when he was living in the household of Henry Morring/Morning.
5. Mary Menke (c1848-????) found in the 1850 census, no further information.

Aunt Rust's first name was Lizetta (c1810-1894) and she was married to Frederick Rust (c1811-bet 1870-1880). They were living in Jackson County, IN in 1860, but moved to Dubois County, IN by 1870. After Frederick's death, sometime before 1880, Lizetta lived with her niece Lizetta Menke Otto in Indianapolis. I feel pretty sure that Lizetta Rust, was the sister of Mary Menke and both were born in Holland. I don't know what their maiden name was.
