Hello- My grandmother's name was Teresa Merced, from Aguas Buenas, PR. Her dob is 10/15/1886. My mother's name was Maria Mercedes, also, born 09/18/1918. I know little of my mother's family, as she was raised by an aunt. However, I do remember her speaking of her mother's older brother whose name was Bernardo Merced. was married in the 1950's to Margarita - they had 2 children before divorcing in Caguas around 1958-59. I know I have at least one Tia named Laura (?) and that Guillermo was a butcher in Caguas --I don't know if the family owned the butcher shop or if he just worked in it...?

I learned that Guillermo passed a few yrs ago, 2009 --- did he ever remarry? Any other children??

I am looking for any information on my grandmothers family Maria Mercedes Merced 10/14/1909 born in Juncos. Her fathers name was Bernando Merced.Her mothers name was Julia but I found her under Julia Cruz y Ayala She had two sisters named Socorro Merced and Filomena Merced. My grandmothers name is also listed as María Merced Y Cruz.Bernando is from Spain but the only thing I'm finding is Simonet-merced. There is never a father listed so Im starting to think this was not a sanctioned marraige. Someone please help me

Agostos and Merceds are found all over Puerto Rico. It would help if you can be more specific as to location. Any grandparents info would help as well.

I have info on hundreds of Agostos' and Merceds' on my husband's side of the family. They are from the Las Piedras, Humacao and Juncos regions. Let me know if these areas pertain to your family.

I was actually up til around 3am looking at the las piedras registry. Was able to find copies of my grandfathers birth and death certificate as well as my great grandfather. Wasn't able to find much for the merced side except finding a sister of Pedro who died in the 1930s.

Yeah the time line is a little off for Justo and Justa being siblings. Justa's maiden name was de Santiago, the "de" was part of the last name. She married a Victor Merced.

You'll find that many last names were "de" and "de la" but those parts were later dropped. Probably because it created confusion having so many "de's" in a name.

So when you start to get into pre 1880's records, be aware that "de" does not always signify a married name for a woman.

It likely that if you look farther back into your Santiago line, you will find that they used to be de Santiago's too.

This is a great puzzle, we have two families with the same last names, living in the same town, in the same time period, yet the key to how they are connected remains undiscovered. That's what makes genealogy fun.

Did you see they have the Las Piedras Registries up now on Familysearch? I had exhausted the Humacao records and am so happy they finally have Las Piedras up.

My great-great-grandmother Filomena Santiago Sanabria was born in 1875. She was much younger than Pedro Merced. According to the 1910 Census, they lived with 2 other kids that he had previously before marrying Filomena. So we can assume that her father, Justo Santiago was born around 1850 or so. It would work out that a Justa de Santiago being a part of the family line. Maybe Justa could be the mother of Justo, being that she married a Santiago cause the de Santiago part. Justa being born around 1826 would make her around 25 or so if Justo was born around 1850.

I have a record for one of Filomena's kids born in 1900 and lists Justo Santiago as already having passed away by then, along with his wife. I got that record off of family search in Humacao. From what I understand, Las Piedras was a part of Humacao at that time.

While looking through the Las Piedras Death Registries I came across a record for a brother of your grandfather Zacarias, named Benigno Merced Santiago who died at the age of 10yr. Also in the same book was the record for your Great Grandfather Pedro Merced Abreu.

Benigno's record has the paternal grandparents you listed, as well as the maternal line of Filomena Santiago. I don't know if you have that info.

Unfortunately Pedro's record does not list his grandparents. He died at age 70 and whomever reported the death did not know that info.

Yes, I always try to correct the bad transcriptions as I search through the Census records. The Puerto Rico census is horribly transcribed you literally have to go line by line in order to find family members. The worst was one household of Santana Y Rivera ancestors was transcribed as AMTUNA y FEVER...that isn't even close. LOL

This is what I have on the Merced line

Eulalia Agosto Merced born 1905 Daughter of Juan Agosto Sanchez and Segunda Merced Gonzalez . Siblings found so far are Donato-1889, Clemente-1898, Maria-1899, Vicente-1902, Bartola-1904, Vicenta-1908, Encarnacion-1911 and Martina-1912.

Segunda born 1871 daughter of Victor Merced de Santiago and Lucresia Gonzalez.

Victor born 1846 son of Victor Merced de la Cruz and Justa de Santiago. Siblings found so far are Juana born Oct 20, 1852 and Isabel born July 08, 1860.

Victor born 1820 son of Julio Merced and Maria de la Cruz.

Julio Merced born approx 1795- Parents unknown.

I have only searched through 35% of the Parish records for Nuestra Senora de la Concepcion. Unfortunately the first 7 books have been lost to damage, so the records start on Book 8 in 1851.

There is some records in the Juncos for the years 1787-1798, this was before Las Piedras had it's own Parish. I'm crossing my fingers and hoping I can find Julio Merced in those records, as he would likely have been born in that time period.

Although I don't see a connection with your Merced line, it is not unlikely they are connected farther back. I will definitely keep an out for the names you listed and will post any new information.

Thank you for replying. I also noticed that you gave corrections to the spelling of some of my relatives on the census records (the misspellings).

From Census Records I've seen, I have been able to determine that my great grandfather Zacarias Merced Santiago was the son of Pedro Merced and Filomena Santiago and had a bunch of siblings (Flora, Filomena, Martin, Agueda, Calixta, and so on). Pedro was born around 1848 and his parents were Juan Merced and Foribia Abreu. I think he may have had siblings named Tomasa, Benigno, and Rosario.

My husband's grandmother Eulalia was a Merced from Tejas de Las Piedras. Her family was Agosto y Merced. Her mother was Merced y Gonzlalez.

Eulalia's maternal grandfather was Victor Merced y de Santiago, however he was born abt. 1856, too old to be a sibling to your Zacarias, however there may still be a connection.

We have the Las Piedras Parish Records on permanent loan at my local LDS Family history center and have been able to trace Eulalia's maternal Merced line in Las Piedras to about 1796.

If you'd like the info, let me know and we can compare notes.

Dear Mr Hail: When I was born in 1953, my name was Brian Hale. My father died and I was adopted. My last name is now "Futrell". Hello fellow Merced's. My fathers name is Ramon merced. Himand my mother were never married and i dont know anything about him and his family until recently, and it might help you all. The merced family orginate in France. When they moved to Puerto Rico to keep the family lineage they interbreeded with cousin and other family members. So the Merced family from Puerto Rico that from Bueno.. something( i think thats the name of the town) all come from only one family. I dont anything else but i never met my half bothers and sisters or my grand parents. I found out my grandmother died last year and she didnt have legs because of her diabetes. Wish I knew more.

My favorite cousin! I met your mom a few years ago at George's 50th birthday party. No pictures. My mom doesn't have a whole lot of information either. I just started this search yesterday. 2nd reply. I checked with my mother. She does recall some of the aunts and uncles (Anacleta, Martin). In fact, her sister lived with Anacleta for a little while when she was very young. As I understand it, Zacarias was fairly young when he died.

Was Zacarias Merced Santiago married to a woman named Lucia Torres (b. 1914). Could it have been a second marriage because Zacarias would have been a little older. They were my maternal grandparents.

I have pictures of my mother with some Eppersons in Tracy, CA. The pictures were probably taken in the 1970's. My mother was the daughter of a Maude Epperson that had a twin named Claude born in 1883 in Arkansas. She was always looking for her Epperson relatives. She would look in phone directories as she and my Dad traveled. Somehow she found this couple in Tracy, CA. I don't know how they are related. How can I contact you?

In 1936, Dennis Hail was born ini Merced, California. His wife's name was Jan. One of his sons was Bryan Hail and the other was Steven Hail. The father of Dennis Hale was E.E."Brownie" Hail of Le Grand. I have information about the first Hail to come to California from Missouri in the 1840's and would like to fiind out if they any more info about our ancestors. The relative is John Hutsell who died Nov 1981 in Gustine, Merced County, CA. He would have been born 22 Oct 1902 and married Daisy Roof Hutsell in Custer County, OK probably at Hydro, OK in 1935.
Daisy is shown to have died 15 Dec 1990 at Modesto, CA.

I am also a Merced.Coincidentally my dads name was Juan Merced.He also had a son whom died in N.Y.As far as I know I am his only living child.His family was from Caguas.He has a living sister named Norma.As far as any of the elders are concerned I know he had an older sister that went by cheni.Any information would be greatly appreciated

I'm also looking for a grandma that I have never meet. Her name was Damiana Merced and she had a son Pablo Vasquez Merced. She left him as a little kid and then again looked him up when he was in the army. Well of course my father didn't want to see her. But i'm very interested in finding my grand mother. His father died in the late 1960's and his name was Pablo Merced. Any info please let me know or e-mail me. I'm interested to know if there was any family members that i might have.

My Great uncle Claude Epperson lived many years in Tracy Ca. His sister Estella also lived there until her death. They both were born in Bradley County Tn. the children of James Epperson. Estella Epperson married Theodore R. Large but I believe they were divorced after one child ,Theodore Jr. She was known as aunt Stella and I am sure remarried and had a family. I have lost the family papers with the information. Would very much like to have contact with any and all members of her family. My mother was an Epperson and a niece of Estellas.
