I believe William Pierce ("Pierce") Merchant was my Great Grandfather. His son, Frederic Laurence Merchant, was my Dad's (Frederic Jr.) Father. Pierce was alive well into my late Teens, if not 20's. He was small & thin, but you knew extremely tough! I can recall sitting, looking at Pierce thinking "ok, why is he so Gaunt faced, and what's with that thick, wavy, black hair, and that Red-Purple Complexion?" Finally, late in my teens, Buster's wife, explained "your great-grand daddy's Father was Indian." (Maybe some on his Mom's side too.)

Jenny Dee was my great grandmother. I found a William 1863 and Jenny Dee 1863 Malone in the 1900 Chickasaw Census, Okla. territory. It listed as children: Ida Malone 1884, Lilly 1888, William 1880, Pearlie 1893, Jesse, 1895, and Frank 1900. The younger child apparently was not born yet, Opal Dee. I know Jenny Dee was married before William to a man named Brown and had a daughter, Ida. I am the granddaughter of Pearlie.
I believe Frank was my great-grandmother's older brother. She was Pearlie Merchant Malone of Oklahoma, born in 1893. I found the family in the Chickasaw Nation Census taken near Pauls Valley, Ok in a community later known as Whitebead. It shows also a brother, William, Pearlie, Jesse Dee, a younger sister.
I have particular interest in Merchant Families of this area who go back to early 1800's. I may have a tie to a Charles Merchant who was in the 1832 Free Blacks and Mulatto's Registry of 1832 with a number of other Merchants. Would like to communicate with anyone of similar interest. Charles was in Botetourte Cty. Va. around 1860 and Giles Cty. Va around 1870, then Summers Cty. West Virginia around 1880

Maybe you already have this information, but if not: The Seeking Michigan website has a death certificate for a Charles B. Merchant who died in 1897 at age 81, occupation listed as blacksmith, and his parents are listed as "Jedadeer [Jedediah?] Merchant" and Hepsabeth Mason. Charles was born in Colesville, according to the certificate. Jedediah "Jed" Merchant came to Coles Hill around 1795, according to some history I've found, so Charles is likely one of Jed's children.
One of my ancestors, Anna Merchant, married a Noble Ruggles and came to Michigan around 1834/5. Noble's father, John Ruggles, also settled at Coles Hill around 1795/6.
Note: Anna Merchant (b. about 1803) isn't specifically listed as one of Jedediah's children on any records I've found yet (if you find any please let me know!), but census records do indicate that Jedediah had more than one daughter--not just the one girl who married a "Mr. Keech."

Check out this source:
Ancestry.com. Binghamton : its settlement, growth, and development, and the factors in its history, 1800-1900 [database on-line]. Provo, UT: The Generations Network, Inc., 2005.

Original data: Binghamton : its settlement, growth, and development, and the factors in its history, 1800-1900.
A Capt. Jedediah Merchant is buried at Coles Hill Cemetery. A picture of the tombstone is on Find A Grave. It's hard to make out, but it looks to me like it says he died in 1831 at the age of 66 years. I don't think there are any other Merchants buried there, though.

James W. Merchant and descendants

o	There were at least three James Merchants born in 1828 in SC. Ours never went back. Our James W. is the one buried in Wister. He never went back to SC after he left there. His first wife was Sarah Elizabeth Morgan b. 1828, mother of Henry, Sarah, Elizabeth T., Angeline (Ann m. Garrett), Mary Jane (m. Charles),and Martha (m. Burt). She died in 1858, and three months later James W married Margaret Elizabeth Harris b. 1838, and she gave birth to 10 kids: James M., Cansada (m. Padgett), Mency, Palina H., George Murphy, Joseph E. Johnston (named for the general), Carroll Lynn, Ada Bell (m. Potts), Mollie (m. Briggs) and HenryEtta.

So, they start in Newberry, SC, and by 1850 are in Itawamba (later part of Lee) county, MS. They come to I.T. in the 1890s, though James M. and Henry I know went to Texas for a time and then came back to I.T. Mary J, Martha, and Cansada ended up in TX.

James M. was married to Mary Isabelle "Bell" Stephens. She's buried by James and Margaret Elizabeth in Ellis Chapel. There are two spaces between her grave and theirs, which I suspect hold infants/children. James stayed in the area with children Clifford, Lucian, Annie D., and Ella. I think he may have eventually farmed in the Laura area, as that is where Clifford was living when he married Bertha Collins in Calvin, Hughes Co. By 1908, James M. was in Newburg marrying Estella Earnhardt and shaving a good 10 years off his age in the process, the old coot! Annie married a Rev.Gifford, Ella married Herbert Green and then Judge (yup, that was his name) Aldridge, and Lucian married Mary Crowder. James M. and Estella had two children together (she already had four from her marriage to Earnhard)--Georgia and Hershel. Hershel was my husband's father. He drowned while night fishing on the Canadian River south of Holdenville. He left a widow, a toddler daughter, my husband who was 5, a daughter 8, and another daughter 12. Lois, my mother-in-law, never remarried. She went on to serve as the Court Clerk in Hughes Co. for a good many years. Her daughter followed in her footsteps.

I have virtually NO family stories or photos, except for a few from George's great granddaughter over in Birmingham, one from Carroll Lynn's, and a couple from Henry's family. A wonderful old Lambert fellow gave me a copy of The Annals of Red Oak. And that's it. My husband's family never talked about their father or his family until they got a nosy daughter/sister-in-law. My youngest sister-in-law never saw a picture of her father until I gave her one for Christmas about 5 years ago, when she was nearly 60.

I suspect that Ada Bell ended up with whatever family stuff there was. She married Forbes B. Potts, and I'm hoping I can connect with their descendants and that maybe they'll have some things. Ada stated solidly and repeatedly that her mother was Mississippi Choctaw. I suspect there might have been some Native American blood in the Merchant line as well.

If anyone has stories, photos, newspaper clipping--anything--I'd love to have copies. I'm still relatively young--under 60--but my husband and his sisters, and the other researchers, are getting up in years. I'd like to give them as much as I can of their family.

Thanks...
Sandra
Rea, I'm quite sure there is a connection between my James William Marchant/Merchant, and the John and Rachel you mention. It's possible that John and Rachel were James William's grandparents, or possible uncle/aunt. I've hit a brick wall when it comes to identifying James William's parents, however.

There are several branches of the the Marchant/Merchant tree, and it seems as if each of those branches settled in distinct areas. Mine--actually,my husband's--were in the Newberry, SC, area, then the Itawamba/Lee County, Mississippi (and maybe NE Alabama)area, and finally in SE Oklahoma.

Sandra

You have lots of information that pertains to my family; although your data on Calvin Merchant b.1835 TN and "unknown brother Merchant are of particulaar interest to me. These two brothers with children of very similar names lived 2 miles apart in Hill Co. Texas, according to 1880 census. Can we discuss this data via telephone? If so, contact me at 405 224-1391 Today is August 4, 2011. Thanks Ray Merchant

Merchant, William Riley Merchant and a Unknown Brother.
The Hulda Merchant is possibly a Mahulda Merchant who married Warren Reed. David B. Merchant's daughter Alice Merchant is living with her in the 1880 Census. I have seen where others have Mahulda as the Daughter of James Brinson Merchant and Mahulda Jane Swain, but she may possibly been their niece instead. These brothers are diffinantly kin to James Brinson Merchant they are probably his nephews.
These brother's children are linked by marriage to the Waldrip
line, and others that are linked to James Brinson Merchant's family.

Many of the brothers listed above died in the Civil War.
here is a little info on them.

Calvin Merchant was b. about 1835 Tn married Sarah Elizabeth Unknown, Children.
1. (Lottie) Unknown.
Children:
1. Joseph Merchant b. abt 1863 Tx
2. William Carroll Merchant b. abt 1867 Tx.
3. Robert Albert Merchant b. abt. 1869 Tx.
4. Martha (Mattie) Alice Merchant b. abt. 1872 Tx.
Charlotte remarried after Unknown Merchant died to Samuel R. Curtis (S/O Cyrus Curtis and Emily Igou and brother to Salem and Mary who married John Merchant and Mary Mollie Merchant children of Calvin Merchant)

These brothers are diffinantly kin to the James Brinson Merchant family tree, the Waldrip and Brown families also.
This research is far from complete and has many areas that needs filling in, but I believe they could possibly be sons
of Beverly Merchant or a Lewis Allen Merchant who may have been brothers to James Brinson Merchant.
These brothers are also kin to The John D. Merchant and Sarah Walker family tree of North Texas. Just need the gaps filled in to prove the kinship links.
It is a start and maybe with some help with other researchers we can fit the rest of the puzzle together.
TKS

The middle name for John D. Merchant born 1800 was Douthit. He had two brothers and a sister. There has been a John Douthit Merchant in every generation since until myself. So five consecutive generations.
