Hi Karen,
Good to hear from you. There maybe a family connection. My dad came over to the USA in 1911,my mom in 1912.The family name was Mercuri.But who knows there also may have
been some connect to the Mercurio's.
Right now I'm in Las Vegas and will be for a few more months.When I get back home and if you are interested I will send you a little more info on my family,and their home town in Italy.
I will wait for a reply concerning this. Also,did you checkout the posting by a man named Vail.It's on the Mercury message board.
He say's that someone in the family was a stone cutter.Maybe worth a look peek.

Hi Roger, my husband's grandparents were from Sicily also. Same story with the name Mercurio changing into Mercury. They arrived right before WWI, so around the same time as yours. his grandpa's name was Sam (don't know the Italian version of that) and he was a stonemason. He had about 12 siblings, maybe one of them was your ancestor!.. Him + his wife (the former Pearl Mazzola of Sicily) wound up going to St. Louis and then Modesto, CA, where my husband's mother was born.

Hmmm...! This is food for thought!

Hey Roger, cheers for the reply. Like I said before to Karen, the name Mercury that I know of was German/Irish. However, the locals may have assumed he was from Germany because in the early 1900s in Samoa, the German's had taken control of Samoa and so all foreigners were expected to come from Germany. So I haven't come across any other Mercury's in the world besides your family, but you never know brother, this story may take a full twist and we may be related after all. Anyway, if we are, then the only logical thing is to invite you all to my home paradise of Samoa. Our family there hold important chiefly titles which have tremendous land implications attached to it. You know, sandy beaches, and the rest of it. Anyway, I did find another Mercury in Australia who is Samoan and might just find some connections there. Hey brother, I live in New Zealand so if you want to keep in touch then my e-mail is

Hi Karen,
My family also started in Sicily.But the original family started in Greece and split off into many countries.
The family that is my heritage is the Sicilian faction. My dad came to this country in 1911,my mother followed o few years later. They were wed and started the Mercury clan in New York State.
The original family name was Mercurio.But when my dad applied for his citizenship,his name was misspelled and mispronounced by the judge.Hence the family name became Mercury.
Do hope you find the time to respond to this e-mail.Like you,the only Mercury's I know of are family members.Will await a response.

Karen, Cheers and thank you for the reply. I recently found out that the Mercury from Samoa was my Great grandfather who was German/Irish. His father was the same ethnic mix and the name was a changed version from a German derivation. They changed to Mercury because it was hard to pronounce.

OMG, another Mercury! And not a Freddy! Unfortunately my (husband's) family came from Sicily and the original name was Mercurio -- I've seen a few Mercurios. Where did your ancestor come from prior to Samoa? (Or is that what you're wondering?) I have never met or seen another Mercury -- Freddie's name was fake.

I am searching for my mothers lost fathers name which is Mercury. It comes into my family in Samoa and may have links to the family through a missionary or settler in the 1800s or the 1900s. I am live in Wellington, New Zealand. My family uses the translated samoan version of Metuli.
