Hello Nancy. My name is Brian Denney. I live in Lincoln County, Kentucky.
I want to say that I am EXTREMELY glad I found this posting of yours. It's something that could possibly lead me closer to my ancestor's Civil War history.
Anyway, my ancestor was a private in the Eighth Kentucky Infantry. He was a deserter as well. What I've read on your thread is pretty accurate to what my ancestor's military records are showing.
My ancestor's name is Robert H. (Henry??) Frazier. He was a private in Companies A&E, Eighth Kentucky Infantry. He enrolled in the army on November 12, 1861.
Robert deserted on November 5, 1862!!!! I'd been doing some studying and found out a possible time when he left the army. It was during the march to Nashville, TN. from Oct. 22-Nov. 12, 1862. He returned on October 27, 1863 and was restored to to duty by competent authority without trial. However, it says here that all pay was forfieted for times absent and $10 for transportation by order of General Stanly. He was detached at the ordinance office in Chattanooga, TN.
If all this adds up this will be EXCITING!!!! Please, if you want email me. I've been trying to gather up as much information as possible on
Robert so I can write a biography on him. My email address is:

brn.denney23@gmail.com

Please, this is very important

Cornelius GLASGOW md. c1795, TN, to Lucy, d/o David & Rebecca MEREDITH of Logan Co., KY
Do you have any information about a David and Rebecca Meredith who lived in Logan Co., Ky in the late 1700's. David died there in about 1815. One of their children, Lucy married Cornelius Glasgow in Davidson Co., Tn in about 1795--she was listed in the marriage records as Lucia Merida, and it's taken me forever to track her down to the Meredith family. I'd appreciate any help with this line

Was William Merida CARR of Missouri a MERIDA descendant?

I'm throwing up a prayer here and hoping someone out there might know something. On my mother's side, I have two relatives with the name 'Merida'. One is my 2nd gr grandfather on my mother's side William Merida Carr. The other is a cousin by the name of Campbell Merida Dent. For years we have wondered where those names came from, especially since there has been a close connection between the Carrs and Dents going back at least 180 years. In fact, William Merida married Lucinda Dent, who was the niece of Campbell Merida Dent. By any chance, by any miracle, does anyone out there know of a connection between the Merida families and the Carrs and Dents? I provide my homepage URL so that anyone interested can learn more about the Carrs and Dents.

http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/c/h/Robert-L-Sc...

Thanks in advance!

Robert Schneider
Berkeley Missouri (I've also posted this note on Genealogy.com

I, too, am interested in the MERIDA family of SE KY, specifically RICHARD MERIDA.

In Civil War records I found where 3 other men joined (and left) the Union Army on/at the same dates/places as my g-g-grandfather, Madison LEWALLEN. The other men were John COX, Richard MERIDA, and John WOOLEM.

All 4 men enrolled as privates in the 8th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (of the Union Army) on 2 Sep 1861. They were all "mustered in" on 1 Oct 1861 at Camp Dick Robionson for a period of 3 yrs. Barely a year later all of them were "mustered out" on 5 Nov 1862 at Glasgow KY.

There is more Civil War history pertaining to Union recruiting at Barbourville KY in the summer of 1861 that fits in with the previous info, but I won't go into that now.

I am guessing that all 4 of these young men knew each other prior to entering the war; they stayed together in the same company of the 8th KY Infantry; and they all left the army together on 5 Nov 1862. (...apparently as deserters.)

My own ancestor never spoke of the Civil War to his wife or children. By putting out "feelers" I hope to find that one of the other men passed on accounts of their Civil War experience, which a living descendant can now share with me. (In that way, I hope to glean more info regarding my own ancestor.)

I found an account of the movements of the 8th KY Regiment Infantry during the Civil War. I concentrated on the time from its inception in Oct 1861 through the end of the following year. They appeared to moved around quite a bit, going here and there; but (as best I could tell) the first battle in which they were engaged was at Perryville KY on 8 Oct 1862. The battle lasted only 5 hours, yet ~7500 died. Every available structure in the vicinity became a "hospital" for the thousands more who were wounded. The carnage was reported to be especially horrific.

The regiment made a march to Nashville from 22 Oct to 12 Nov 1862. Enroute, the 4 men listed above left the regiment at Glasgow KY. I am guessing the Perryville experience resulted in the men reaching a determination not to kill anymore of their countrymen and fellow Kentuckians.

Incidentally, these men were not the only deserters from the 8th Regiment; but they share significant commonalities which have caused me to initiate this query.

Thanks for any help you can provide!
Nancy

Any male-line MERIDA descendant for y-DNA testing?
The number of MERIDETH and MEREDITH families who have submitted samples for y-DNA testing has expanded over the past year. Four major clusters of descendants with similar DNA have been identified as of this date. No MERIDA descendant has joined this surname DNA project so far.

We invite any male bearing the MERIDA surname to submit a simple cheek-cell scraping for y-DNA genealogical testing, to determine if there is any connection between his MERIDA family and any MERIDETH or MEREDITH family that has been tested.

For more information, please contact me, or send a message to the DNA Group Administrator shown on the following page:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~merideth/s...

Bill Vincent
WmRVincent (a) aol (dot) com

...
