Loralee.....
Hope you are still monitoring this message board! Juliana, wife of Christian MERKEL is mt gr4grandfather's sister. She was Juliana KERST (records spell this surname opften as GERST). A daughter of John KERST and Eva Rosina RITTER of Oley, Berks Co. She married Christian MERKLE/MERCKEL/MERKEL on 14 Nov 1758 at St Michael/Zion church in Philadelphia, witnesses were her brother Franz KERST(her brother), Caspar MERKEL (his brother) and an Esther BECKER who I have never figured out if related!
Christian and Juliana were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading. He was a blacksmith. They had 5 children: George, Magdalena m Wm Thompson, Jacob, Maria m Isaac Hahn, and Elizabeth m John SHAFER/SCHAEFFER.
Christian died 1/27/1814 at his son George's home in Cumru, Berks Co. Juliana had died 12/13/1803 in Reading, and is buried in Oley, according to Trinity Lutheran burials. I am not sure where, but the KERSTs had a private family cemetery which is no longer in existence, and that could have been where she was buried. I don't know where Christian is buried, but his death was shown in Trinity Lutheran burials, Reading, where he was a deacon in the church.

1800 Census, Reading, Berks Co PA
Christian Mercle 1 male 0/45, 1 fem 0/45

Here is his will:
Christian MERKEL, Reading.
Will dated 4/1/1808; proved 6/16/1814.
Will Book D. Reg's
Wits: Isaac ADAMS and George R NUTZ.

Then this announcement in a Maryland source:
Pennsylvania Genealogical Magazine, Maryland References in Berks County Records, Vol XXIII, p20:
July 3 1818: Whereas Christian MERCKEL, of Reading PA, left to his daughter Maria, wife of Isaac HAHN, a life estate of one-fifth of his estate, and after her death, the share to be divided among her children....Said Maria died leaving one child Justina, wife of Patrick REED of Emmetsburg, MD, who now acknowledges receipt of legacy. (Deed book 29, 369)

I have never found out what happened to his son Jacob. George died in Cumru in 1844. He had married an Eva Barbara (Spohn) who pre-deceased him in 1819. They are also shown in burials of Trinity Lutheran church.

If you have info on son Jacob, I would love it if you could share! All I have is his birth, recorded at Trinity Lutheran, 6/25/1763, baptized 9th Sunday after Trinity in 1763 at Trin. Lutheran, spons: Jacob Hoffman and wife Eva.

I don't have children for him other than 3 daus: Francesca (b. 10/3/1790), Lydia (b. 11/27/1791, and Anna Margaret(b. 11/1/1793) who were baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Reading. Do you know the trail of where they went? Were they in Gettysburg or in Franklin Co PA before some of the children went west to Indiana and IL?
I recently found another researcher who had found Fanny/Francesa buried in Saline Co IL in Wolf Creek cemetery with some of the family. Her stone had 10/3/1790-7/19/1866. She died single.

Diana in AL
audianaq@msn.com
KERST researcher
Hi Joe Holtslag:
Good to hear from you. Since signing on to Rootsweb in 06, I've learned much more about our mutual ancestor. (Finally hired a German genealogist to research the family) Would be happy to send you copies of all. I don't have a scanner, so must send hard copies via snail mail. Can you send me your address in N.C.? Also, was unable to find his burial place. Do you have the name of the cemetery? My e-mail address is archiec@optonline.com

Are you the son of Charlotte and Joe Holtslag, by chance? I met them both several times and remember them with great fondness. I grew up in Wallkill, NY where my Dad, Norbert Henzel was Dir of Ed. at the prison there. So we didn't get to Albany too often. Regards, Nancy Henzel Clarke

Hello NBC,
I too am a great great grandson of Lawrence Merkle. I do know a bit about him. Before he enlisted at age 38, he was a butcher by trade, 5'8" brown hair and gray eyes. He was a private in the 4th NY Heavy Artillery, enlisted in Feb 1, in Troy NY. I assume his company (I) was with Grant on the Wilderness Campaign. He was probably in the Petersburg trenches somewhere where it looks like he got sick and was transferred in October 1864 to the Mower General Hospital in Philidelphia, PA. Looks like he stayed there until he was discharged on Jun 9th 1865. I suspect he went back to the Troy area because he is buried up near there. (I live in NC and haven't gotten up to the gravesite) While I don't have a pict of him, I have a family photo taken around 1900 that includes Magdalena, and his daughter "Wally" and her family....Joe Holtslag

I found the passenger list showing when their mother brought the children to the US; info from the marriage record of John and Kunigunda in St. Francis Xavier Church in Buffalo, NY; and info from the baptismal records of the same church for 4 of their children (John Joseph, William Matthew, John, and Francis Xavier). I didn't know they had any more children.
I am descended from Johann Baptist Merkle and his wife, Kunigunda Mink (my great-grandparents) who married in Buffalo, NY in 1876. Johann was born in 1851 in Deißlingen, Württemberg to Josef Merkle and Carolina Stotz.

Johann came to the US in 1855-1856 timeframe with his parents and his brothers, Matthew, Wilhelm and Josef. I believe that another brother, Charles, was born in New Jersey. The family was found in Hackensack, NJ in 1860.

I haven't found the proof yet but I believe that the entire family moved to Buffalo by 1869-1870.

In the 1900 Census for Toledo, OH there is the following family, they are listed as Markle in the Index online:
District 115 -- 214/246
Ernest Merkle b. Apr 1865 m. 13yrs. b. in Switzerland imm. 1867
Amalia b. Jun 1867 m. 13yrs. 4children b. in Illinois, parents b. Germany
Fred b. Dec 1888 b. in Wisconsin
Lisdia b. I could not find Fred in the draft cards, though.
Ernest August b. 10 Aug 1899
Theodore Chas. b. 21 Nov 1891

In the 1920 Census Fred Merkle is listed in Florida with his family, and he is listed as a baseball player.

I am unable to find Ernest Merkle in the 1870 nor the 1880 Censuses.

Does anyone know if there is a published genealogy for Fred Merkle, Major League Baseball player in the early 1900s? I see that he was born in Wisconsin in 1888 (according to Wikipedia) but there is no mention of his parents. I am descended from Merkles that immigrated from Wurtemberg in the 1850s and lived in New Jersey prior to settling in Buffalo, NY.

I found my Great Great Grandmother's obituary by accident - of course, when you give up and look for something else, you find what you wanted before! All I knew for sure was Caroline's (aka Carrie) first husband was James McGinn who died when his 3 children were very young, and married James O'Neil and had one daughter with him. And that she was born abt 1856 in NY. Her father was born in Germany, her mother in Ireland.

Now that I have her obituary, it lists Caroline's parents as Morris Markle, and Catherin Carter Markle, and her place of birth as Pond Eddy NY. Her birthdate was 23 May 1855.

I was able to find them on the 1860 (Morris was a grocer) and 1870 ( Morris was a tavern keeper) censuses. Name used was Markly. 1860 listed Morris birthplace as Wuerttemberg. abt 1824.

In the 3 May 1873 edition of the Port Jervis Evening Gazette I found Catherine's death announcement. It listed her as "Markley", and referred to her as the widow of Morris Markley.

I have come across the information that Moritz Merkle was born 1 Sep 1824 , Katholisch, Denkingen, Schwarzwaldkreis, Wuerttemberg

Father: Georg Merkle
Mother: Rosalia Keller

I believe this may be my Morris. Is this familiar to anyone?

Catherine and Morris's first know child was born abt 1850, so both would have had to immigrate here prior to then.

Any information would be appreciated.
Thankyou

Western New York Merkles and Fort Lee, NJ Merkles

Does anyone know of specific connections between the Western New York MERKLEs (those descended from Joseph MERKLE and Caroline STUTZ) and any MERKLEs in Fort Lee, NJ? I feel that there must be a connection because my grandparents (Charles Douglas MILLER and Frances Theresa MERKLE) traveled to Nyack, NY, New York City, and Fort Lee on their honeymoon and there have always been stories of family in that area.

I would love to hear from others researching MERKLEs in the greater New York area.

Also, I have no proof of Joseph and Caroline's birthplaces. At least 4 of their children (John, who is my great-grandfather, William, Matthew, Joseph and Charles) lived in the Buffalo, NY area. Does anyone know where the MERKLEs were from? John's wife, Kunigunda MINK was born in Feckenhausen, Wurttemberg.
