I am the grandson of Edward and Mabel Merrick, and nephew of Gerald Merrick. I wouldn't know additional information as to that which you've posted here, but I have very fond memories of all three of them.

Update on search:

So it looks like Ray is indeed the brother of Wesley and Edward.

Here's how I come to that conclusion:

When Charlotte Merrick died, there was a posting in the old NY newspapers about the estate of Charlotte Merrick, administered by Levi Merrick of Bangor. The posting was searching for:

Lulu Sanborn of ?
Levi Merrick of Bangor
Ellen Sillsbee of Bangor
Alonzo Boyce of Warm Spring, OR
Noble L. Boyce of Warm Spring, OR
Mable Merrick of Swanton, VT

Using these family names as reference, a search in the 1880 Federal Census of Bangor, NY shows (pg 27) in one household:

Charlotte Mirick, 51, single, keeping house
Ellen Silsby, 45, sister, widowed
Henry Silsby, 18, nephew
Edward Silsby, 8, nephew
Wesley Silsby, 6, nephew
Ray Silsby, 2, nephew
Noble Boyce, 16, nephew

Ellen Merrick Silsby is Charlotte Merrick's sister, and daughter of Levi Merrick and Cynthia Kneeland, so the children must all be the sons of Ellen Merrick Silsby and her late husband - except Noble must be the son of Ellen and a husband with the last name of Boyce (perhaps the Alonzo Boyce of Warm Springs, OR that was listed in Charlotte Merrick's will).

Merrick Family - Bangor, Franklin County, New York - Bangor Cemetery

I have been trying to find the parents of my great grandfather, Wesley George Merrick - who spent his life in Bangor, NY. I've decided to take another route to see if I can make a family connection.

I need help from anyone who is familiar with Bangor Cemetery (aka Keeler Cemetery) - located on Route 11B in Bangor, .6 miles east of the intersection with County Route 53.

There are a number of Merricks buried in this cemetery - some of whom I know from records are related, some of which I am not sure. If there is anyone out there who knows this cemtery, and knows of the Merrick family, I hope you can answer this question for me.

I need to know which of the following Merricks are buried together, like in a family plot, and which are not. My great grandfather is one on the list, and if he's buried near some or all of the other Merricks, then at least I would have a clue that they are indeed from the same family line.

Wesley, his brother Edward, and Wesley's sons Edward and George were not buried in the cemetery where Wesley's first wife, Mary LaFlesh, and two of their daughters are buried, so I'm thinking there is a family connection to others in this cemetery and that's why they are buried here in Bangor Cemetery instead of in North Bangor Cemetery.

Here is a list based on the tombstone project of the Merricks buried in Bangor Cemetery.

Berton W Merrick [son of Levi O] (1857-1922) and Susan Vanderbogart Merrick (1853-1922)

Charlotte Merrick [daughter of Levi and Cynthia - sister of Levi O and John K] ( -1890)

Edward Merrick [Wesley's brother](1871-1934), his wife Minnie A (1878-1899) and their two children Hazle M (1897-1898) and Leland C (1898-1899)

Edward L Merrick [Wesley's son] (1915- ), his wife Mabel G [Wesley's second wife, Jennie Carlton Merrick's daughter] (1919-1987), their son Gerald R (1946-1995) and Edward's brother [another of Wesley's sons] George Merrick (1905-1980)

John K Merrick [son of Levi and Cynthia - brother of Charlotte and Levi O] (1832/33-1867)

Levi Merrick [brother of Prince; father of Charlotte, John K and Levi O] (d 1886) and wife Cynthia [Kneeland] Merrick (d 1860)

Levi B Merrick [son of Berton W] (1887-1928) and Lucy (d 1927 - says buried in Ellenburg)

Levi O Merrick [son of Levi and Cynthia, brother of Charlotte and John K; father of Berton W] (1826-1905) and wife Lucinda Taft Joy (1828-1912)

Prince Merrick [brother of 1st Levi](d 1866) and wife Hannah (d 1843 - former wife of Plumb)

Ray G Merrick (1876/77-1897)

Wesley Merrick [brother of Edward; father of Edward and George] (1873-1959) and [second] wife Jennie Carlton (1878-1962)

So I know how Edward, Edward, George and Wesley all fit together as family; and I know how Berton, Charlotte, John, Levi, Levi B, Levi O and Prince all fit together as family; but I don't know if or how those two Merrick families fit together, and if or how Ray G fits in (unless Ray is a brother of Edward and Wesley, and wasn't mentioned in Edward's obit since he was already dead).

If anyone can help me with this quandry, I'd be most grateful!

Merrick of Franklin County, New York

Looking for living relatives from Franklin County, New York, to help me fill in missing information.

My Great Grandfather was Wesley Merrick (1873 - 1959) who married Mary LaFlesh (1879 - 1940: daughter of Elizabeth LaFave LaFlesh), and lived in Bangor, Franklin County, New York. They had 9 girls and 2 boys. Their children were (and spouses that I am aware of):

*Ruby Pearl Merrick (1902 - 1966) - married Joseph Willard Presley (had 6 children: William, Olive, Jennie, Bessie, George and Bruce), divorced, then married Guy Allen Blanchard (had a daughter Betty).

*George Merrick (1905 - 1980)

*Mamie May Merrick (1906 - prior to 1962) - married Sweeney

*Jessie Merle Merrick (1908 - 1937) - died in New York.

*Pearl Margaret Merrick (1909 - 1988) - died in Florida, had 2 children

*Christie or Christine Merrick (1912 - 1993) - married Drum and Durham. Died in Massachusetts.

*Lena Merrick (1913 - 1996) - married Oda Yelle and had 7 children I know of. Died in New York after years living in Massachusetts.

*Edward Leland Merrick (1915 - 1994) - married Mabel Griffin (her mother became Wesley Merrick's 2nd wife - Jennie Carlton Griffin Merrick).

*Gertrude Merrick (1916 - 1991) - married Frederick Lattimore. Died in New York.

*Edith Merrick ((1919 - 1984) - married Erwin Grandy. Died in New York.

*Bessie Merrick (1922 - 1972) - married John Wesley Greenwood.

I am a granddaughter of Ruby Pearl Merrick Presley and Joseph Willard Presley (Jefferson County, New York), and don't know much at all of my family history. Would love to hear from cousins, see any family photos, find out my family's history, etc.

In the Merrick family tree, I am stuck at no parents for Wesley Merrick and his brother Edward Merrick. I don't know if there were other siblings - the sparse info I have came from old New York newspapers online.

Originally I thought that William Merrick and Julia Trim Merrick Tebo were Wesley's parents, since the 1880 census for Franklin County, New York showed Wesley as a son. However, I have William Merrick's Civil War pension records that I requested from the National Archives, and discovered that Wesley was incorrectly listed by the census taker - that son's name should have been Leslie Merrick. And since the 1890 census does not exist, the first time I can find Wesley in the census is 1900, when he is already married to Mary LaFlesh.

Maybe a couple of old New York newspaper postings might help figure out the family.

On Nov 14, 1957, a posting was made for Wesley Merrick's property due to $11.03 in unpaid taxes. The property was listed as North Bangor, Twp. N/E. East side Depot St, R.I., 80 R, bounded N by Tromblev, E by Trippany, S by Hart, W by Depost st.

I also found another posting that mentioned Wesley Merrick. It was for foreclosure on property of Levi and Luella Merrick. Their property description mentioned that it was bounded on 2 sides by land previously owned by Wesley Merrick. Since I know that many times back in the day, family members had properties next to each other, I don't know if there is a familial relationship between Wesley and that Levi Merrick or not. Just found it interesting.

I also found an old newspaper posting from April 1921 that said that Ed Merrick of Bangor was an overnight visitor at his cousin Elmer Merrick's home before leaving on a trip to North Dakota. I don't know if this Ed Merrick is Wesley Merrick's brother Edward or not, but I know both Edward and Wesley were pretty much lifelong residents of Bangor, Franklin County, New York.

Elmer Merrick was the husband of Edna Merrick. Edna was the sister of Ira Fadden. Ira Fadden was the uncle of DeEtta LaFlesh.

So that makes me wonder if DeEtta LaFlesh may be related to Elizabeth LaFave LaFlesh and her daughter, Mary LaFlesh Merrick.

I'm hoping that either family or someone who is familiar with this family is on Ancestry.com and contacts me.

I appreciate ANY tidbit, no matter how small, of information that anyone can provide. Thank you!

Hi, I have been packing to move and I am having trouble finding my genealogy book - also since getting a new computer, a Mac, I was switched from my favorite Family Tree Maker to Reunion. I haven't gotten a handle on the new software yet. Anyway, I was able to bring up the pertinent info. I am related to Ethel, and your mother I guess - through Ethel's mother Cecilia Kavaney - my maiden name. I do not have any link beyond Ethel except to believe she had 8 daughters. The Kavaneys that I am aware of moved to Bismark ND and Minneapolis/ St Paul MN. I have been in touch with Kavaney descendants there. I'm not sure I can be of any more help. I don't belong to ancestry.com right now.If I can though let me know.

I think he's my ancestor too. I'm Margaret Merrick and I'm from Cullen in Tipperary in Ireland. My family were originally from Bansha in Tipperary, lots of them emigrated to the States back in the 1800s and 1900s. Some of their relatives can be traced online via the Irish national census of 1901 and 1911 on http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

The mother of George was Sara Jane (last name unknown), born in Ontario, Canada in 1847, and they moved to Minnesota. Am looking for information about Robert and Sara Jane; if these are your ancestors I would appreciate info and can e-mail pics of Robert and Sara Jane.

Am looking for information about Robert and Sara Jane; if these are your ancestors I would appreciate info and can e-mail pics of Robert and Sara Jane.

dear Denise:
I just noticed your post on William Merrick that married
Mary Funkhouser. I have that william and Mary had 10 children. The Reason I have the information on them is I am from the Funkhouser side of that family and I Have the Funkhousers clear back to Nicolas Funkhouse in Germany.
I also have information on the Merrick family. William g Merrick's parents were Daniel Merrick and his mother was Elizabeth.

After Joseph Earl died his wife married Henry S. Ripley and they had a son Leroy J. born in 1927 in Wisconsin.

Maybe this will help you in your search. If I can help please let me know.

Bert Anderson

I am descended from a brother of John Merrick who was born in 1825 called Richard. Who moved to Cullen, Co. Tipperary. They also had another brother William, who lived in Lissgibbon, Co. Tipperary. I am confused about John Merrick who married Eliza Hennessy, as he would of been 59 years of age when emigrated to Australia. My John Merrick did not go to Australia and my John Merrick did have family Patrick, Thomas, John, Michael, and Winifred. The Hennessy line is posted by Bob Murphy on this website I presume you have seen it. I have the family tree which I will be delighted to e-mail to ye all.

I've been digging into the Meyrick's of Kittery Maine, specifically John and Anne Meyrick, who were wed in MA in Sept of 1725. After much searching into John Meyrick's wife, I've run into a puzzlement. I've begun to turn up her parents' names, which are James Libbey and Abigail Larabee. All of her siblings are Libby. Has anyone found out why her name is MacClure? Was she previously married, or perhaps simply raised by the Libby's? If anyone can shed some light on Anne MacClure I would be most grateful.

Hello Margaret,
I was interested in your post. I have been researching my own family line of Merrick's and I have some evidence suggesting that they were from Tipperary,Irl before emigrating to New Hartford,Connecticut,USA sometime after the Famine. I recently discoverd a death registry for Michael Merrick 1799-1854 in New Hartford, CT. I have a 1860 U.S. Federal census record,in New Hartford, CT for his wife Bridget (Clahoon {Calhoon?}) Merrick b. 1806? and his son Michael Merrick 1842-1919. Also listed in that household is a Kate Merrick who many assumed was Michael and Bridget's daughter. Recently though it was discoverd on her death certificate that her parents were John Merrick of Ireland and Mary Glasshine of Scotland. So she must be some other relation to my direct line of Merrick's like a cousin. Kate Merrick McGrath's ( married James McGrath) birthplace was listed as Tipperay. So this has made me look to Tipperary as perhaps the origin of my Merrick's. I'm just wondering if my Merrick's are connected to your Merrick's in Tipperary. If anyone has any information about Merrick's in Tipperary I would greatly appeciate hearing from them: seangeenpiper@yahoo.com

Griffin/Griffith MERRICK

Griffin Merrick, b. abt. 1837 in TN. Married Martha/Margaret Wells in 1855 in Conway, AR. Children I'm aware of: William M. Merrick (my direct line) b.1854; Lorenzo Boyd, b. abt. 1857; and Louiza B., b. abt. 1858.

Different census records show William's year of birth as 1856, his marriage license caculates it as 1855, and his burial records and the family bible show it as 1854.

Family records also list his mother as Emeline who died in 1854. Does anyone have any record of a marriage between Griffin and Emeline in either Arkansas or Tennessee (that I've been able to access).

Also, I am trying to desperately trying to connect this Griffin to the Merrick's in Humphries and Benton Co., TN. But this Griffin died in TX in 1855. My heart keeps drawing me back to this family but this would make it impossible for him to have fathered, Lorenzo and Louiza.

Anyone with any clarity on this subject?

I am looking for information on John Merrick married to Sarah Gavin, and father of William Henry Merrick (my grandfather), Maude Merrick, Mae Merrick and Alice Merrick. William Henry Merrick b. about 1884 was working on the Coral Gables Florida development with relatives, one of whom was named George Merrick. My understanding is that both John Merrick and Sarah Gavin were born in County Clare, Ireland, but I haven't been able to find out any other information on them. I have no question that it's the same Merrick family. Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for my Ggrandfather by the name of John Merrick. He and his wife Sarah Gavin were both born in County Clare, Ireland, and had a son, William Henry Merrick, born about 1884 in California. I don't know if they married in Ireland or the U.S. Could this be the same John Merrick?
