Anna (Merritt?) Golding, w/o John; NY to NB 1783

JOHN GOLDING, Loyalist to NB in 1783 from North Castle, Westchester Co., NY is said to have m. ANNA MERRITT b. (variously ca. 1766.)
While John’s wife’s forename was some version of Anne (and Anna is as acceptable as any other), the estimates of her dates-of-birth are impossible. John and Anna’s son, Stephen, for example, is known to have been b. ca. 1762. (Stephen’s date-of-birth is given as 1762, and he was age 83 when he d. 27JUN1845.)
It is more likely that Anna was b. ca. 1738-42. Anna is also given as the d/o Robert and Elizabeth (Robinson) Merritt; but as Robert was b. 17MAR1731. This also seems unlikely.
Administration of John Golding’s estate was granted 14JUN1822 to Stephen Golding, Ann Golding and Gilbert Merritt. (Probably Gilbert Merritt who m. Phoebe Birdsall; usually given as Ann’s brother.) As far as I can tell, this seems to have been the basis for the belief that Anna as a Merritt, and Gilbert’s sister.
If Anna was a Merritt; then she was far more likely a d/o Thomas Merritt or Andrew Merritt (not the Rye Andrew), both freeholders in North Castle in 1763. The only Golding listed in North Castle was Joseph Golding, John’s brother. Since their father had died only a few years before; while John was likely married by 1763, he probably still lived on the family land; or rented elsewhere (thus was not a freeholder.) This makes it likely he married in the North Castle area.
Thomas Merritt’s daughter was Prudence. This is indicated by a Quaker marriage record:

15th of 9th mo., 1763 - Stevenson Thorn, of North Castle, son of Thomas, and Prudence Merritt, of North Castle, daughter of Thomas.

Thus, by 1763, Thomas and Prudence had at least one daughter of marriageable age. However, Thomas’ will, 3SEP1784, states he was survived by two daughters, the other of whom I make to have been

MARY MERRITT b. 18MAY1752, d. 31JAN1827, m. 3DEC1770 WILLIAM KIPP (b. 3JAN1749, d. 19OCT1800), s/o Benjamin and Dorothy (Davenport) Kip.

While if a child married ‘out-of-meeting’, they tended to be disowned by the Society of Friends; I cannot help but feel that Thomas was not likely the father of an Anna Merritt who m. John Golding. So, If Anna was a Merritt, she was likely Andrew’s daughter. This Andrew seems to be easy to confuse with his cousin, contemporary and name-sake in Rye, Westchester Co., NY. It is difficult to say whom his children were.
The questions are:

How is it known that Anna, wife of John Golding, was a Merritt?
Who were her parents?
What is know of Merritt’s in North Castle 1700-1783?

Thomas
Robert Merritt - Brompton 1861 (son of James)

Hi, I'm using a pal's longin o post this - please get back to me at davidjmadden@hotmail.com.

There is only one link to Robert Merritt of Brompton (Middx), 1861. He is my great grandfather. He served in the Royal Navy on HMS Assistance and HMS Monarch. In his later years he married in Ireland and died there about 1922 or so.

We've never been able to find any of his relatives in England and I would dearly love to do so. We know next to nothing about his family and even that his father was called James is suspect (no father is listed in the census returns).

Robert had three sons and a daughter in Ireland and served there onboard HMS Camperdown.

Does any of this ring a bell for anyone? Someone must be descended from Robert's siblings but lord only knows how I'll find them!

Best,

David
(davidjmadden@hotmail.com)

Searching for parents of Crofton George Merritt, b. 1862 in Virginia, m. Laura Louise Rymer in 1886 in Doddridge Co., WV. I have found census records indicating that Crofton's parents were John & Eliza A. (Tate) Merritt. I have been able to trace John & Eliza back to 1840 in the census records, but then I hit a brick wall. John & Eliza's other children are: Evaline R., Henry , William N., Nancy I., Tamsworth, James, Jacob, Lucy, Mary, John E., Benjamin, Stephan T., and Susan.

Any help would be appreciated.

Elizabeth Merritt and John Moore of Elizabeth City

I note that a number of people on RootsWeb and Ancestry.com record that John Moore (said to be the wife of John Moore of Elizabeth city county, Virginia, was the son of Mary More (a descendant of Sir/Saint Thomas More) and Edward Moore.
Mary More is sometimes said to be "of Barnborough",(or similar spellings), Yorkshire, England,.
Edward is said to be "of" various places, including Barnborough, Bampton, Oxford, Reading, London, Shropshire (a geographical area), and Ireland.
I would point out to those who want to maintin the myth/fantasy, that THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE FOR THIS.

With regard to 'Mary More', and with specific reference to her marriage to Edward Moore and to their children:
Mary More was born on 25 December 1553. This was not recorded by anyone until I first posted it on RootsWeb a few years ago - and many have since copied it onto their sites.
Mary was born at Hambleden, Buckinghamshire (not Barnborough, Yorkshire) where her parents were living after their marriage in early 1553.

Edward Moore's birth date is not recorded and any dates given are just guesses - not good genealogy.
The family were Catholic and the baptisms of their children were not recorded in the Church of England Parish Register. EDward was the son of Thomas More of Haddon (a village in the parish of Bampton, Oxfordshire), and his wife Dorothy Mordaunt.
The only thing known about Edward's early life was that he was a minor (but not an infant) when his father made his will in 1561.

After their marriage, most probably in 1585 (Edward was a convicted recusant in various London prisons for some years before that), Mary and Edward lived with Mary's parents (Thomas More and Mary Scrope) on their small estate at Low Leyton in Essex. THis is attested by recusant records. Some (few) record their children as born at Bampton, which is nonsense!

Edward died intestate in 1605 and Mary (then living with one of her married daughters at Stondon Massey, Essex) in 1630. Again, this was not known until I posted it.

There is incontrovertible evidence in the form of personal statements, that Edward and Mary DID NOT HAVE A SON JOHN or, as some also say, a daughter Mary Jane. In spite of this, some (presumably not interested in genealogy based on hard evidence) still insist on recording the myth/fantasy.

Edward and Mary had ONLY TWO SONS, Henry and Thomas, both of whom became Jesuit Priests. They also had five daughters: Isabel, Joan, Frances, Grace and Anne. Of these Joan, Grace and Anne became Benedictine Nuns.

My information is based on the family pedigree, on family papers, on a sworn statement about his family by Thomas More (son of Edward and Mary) when he entered the English College, Rome, on the history of the Jesuits, on records of the English Benedictine Nuns in Flanders, and on Court records of Recusancy in Essex. I have copies of these.

It seems certain that the John Moore mentioned by most people emigrated, age 36, from England to Virginia in 1620, in the ship 'Bona Nova', followed in 1622 by his wife Elizabeth in the 'Abigail'. Elizabeth's second name is usually given as 'Merritt' - and various guesses are also made about her origins! The ships musters make no reference to any children travelling with either of them - so presumably they were childless, or they left their children (for which there is no documentary evidence)in England.
Because John Moore's age is given in the ship's muster as 36, people have assumed he was born in 1584 - though some, who obviously haven't noticed this say he was born in 1576.

John and Elizabeth Moore settled in Elizabeth City County, Viginia, where he patented land at the head of the Little Poquoson Creek in 1535.

Eminent Americal genealogists researched all this in the 1890s and first decade of the 1900s - published in the William and Mary Quarterly and other papers.
They did not succeed in establishing John Moore's ancestry. They showed that he was sometimes confused - and still is - with a Captain John Moore (of unknown birthplace and ancestry) who arrived in Virginia around the same time, but who settled in Isle of Wight where he eventually became a Burgess.

The American genealogists established that John Moore and Elizabeth (second name said to be "Merritt") had only ONE son, Augustine. This Augustine married and had two children: Augustine II and John (who died childless in 1715-16).
Augustine II (grandson of John the immigrant) married Mary Woolley and had a number of children (including an Augustine who died unmarried in 1637).

I hope that some people will find this information useful.
Martin Wood
William Merritt 1863

I have been trying to find candidates for my great grandfather's biological father. All I know is that his name was William Merritt and he was born in Iowa.

My great grandfather, Edward Merritt, was born illegitimate about 1884 in Howard County, IA to Sarah Riehl.

I have found one possible fit from the 1900 census

1900 United States Federal Census
about William Merritt

Name:	William Merritt
Home in 1900:	Saratoga, Howard, Iowa
Age:	37
Estimated birth year:	abt 1863
Birthplace:	Iowa
Relationship to head-of-house:	Son
Father's name:	George
Mother's name:	Nancy
Race:	White
Occupation:	View image
Neighbors:	View others on page
Household Members:
Name	Age
George Merritt	72
Nancy Merritt	71
William Merritt	37
Archer Merritt	29
Julia Nelson	22

Wonder if anyone has any more information on this Merritt family so that I could possibly make a connection to my own Merritt line. I would like to be able to decide if this might be "my man" or if it is not possible or likely.

Thanks.
Carrie Herfindahl

Newspaper article

Hello everyone,
I am trying to find out how I can obtain an old newspaper article from the now called the Poughkeepsie Journal. My father and his brothers apparently had their picture taken. My Granparents names were Fred and Edith Merritt. They had 9 boys"enough for a baseball team". I have tried to find this article. I have tried the Adriannce Library. I live in Columbia County and I work so I have absolutely no way there to get the article myself. I wouldn't be able to make it to the library before it closed. Can anyone please offer any suggestions. This is a treasure to me as I never got the chance to know let alone see my Uncles.
Sincerely,
Ginny Merritt Hiesel

Belmont County, Ohio Merritts

Does anyone have a Merritt who went to Belmont County very early 1800's and was a surveyor? Have found some information that "my" Daniel Merritt had a brother who was a surveyor who platted Daniel's 640 acres of land from the government. I still don't know in what state Daniel Merritt was born, but think he was in Washington County, PA in the 1800 census. Next door was a Matthew Merritt, but I don't know if there was a family relationship there or not. Any help greatly appreciated!

Mary Lou Swank

Daniel Merritt of Belmont, Matthew Merritt of Knox Connection

These two appear next door to each other in the 1800 census of Washington County, PA, and shortly thereafter, they have both moved on to Ohio. Those of us researching either of them thought there might be a connection.

Now there seems to be a second location in PA where both lived. After finding a bio on a descendant of Daniel Merritt from a book on the Centennial History of Belmont County that stated Daniel was born in 1750 (agrees to 1830 census) and had been in the Revolutionary War, I tried to find some record. Today a spelling variation paid off, and I found Daniel Marrit served in the 7th battalion in/from Cumberland County under Capt. John Bochanon(sic). This was found at PA Archives, www.digitalarchives.state.pa.us. Found at ancestry in the History of Perry County, PA is Daniel Marrit in the 7th company under Capt. John Buchanan. Also found at ancestry in AGBI is the following:

Name: Daniel Marrit
Birth Date: 1750
Birthplace: Pennsylvania
Volume: 110
Page Number: 166
Reference: Ten "Series" of "Pennsylvnia Archives" have been so far published in from 5 to 31v. Ea. Philadelphia and Harrisburg. 1852- ( We have indexed Series 2, v.2 and v.8 ( early Pa. marriage recds.) And all the v. of SeriesV. Which contain nearly complete Pa. Rev. War recds.)Ser.5:6:460

Now it's Matthew's turn, but please remember that Daniel served from Cumberland County, PA and from the portion that became Perry County, PA. This is what I found for Matthew:

MARRIAGES BY REV. JOHN LINN, CENTRE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 1778-1793
SHERMANS VALLEY, PERRY (then Cumberland) COUNTY PENNSYLVANIA
United congregations consisting of Centre & Upper (Blain).
The Perry Historians

Unless otherwise stated names given are usually part of the Centre Presbyterian
Church Congregation.

1778
29 Jul, James Ardery and Catherine Adams d/o Robert both of Upper Sherman
4 Aug, John Davidson and Agnes Robertson of Upper Sherman
11 Aug, John Thomas MacKentire and Margaret Macabe
17 Sep, William Shields of Upper Sherman and Florence Morrow, Upper Sherman
30 Sep, Matthew Marritt of Lower Sherman and Sarah Jameson, Lower Sherman

The only other Merritt of any spelling in that listing of marriages is as follows:

1781
4 Jan, Matthew McClaran and Mary Kincand
1 Feb, John Berry and Elizabeth Merrit

If Daniel and Matthew were not brothers, they were almost certainly related, with evidence showing them in the same physical location in two different areas. The bad news is that I was unable to find anything more with the additional Cumberland/Perry County location, BUT we all have access to different things and we all research in different ways. How about working together to see if any of us can further this? Does anyone know if Matthew was a surveyor or know of any Merritt who was a surveyor who was in Ohio in the early 1800's? The Belmont County bio said that Daniel's brother (unnamed) surveyed his land for him.

Mary Lou
I am looking for descendants of the above (bn. 15 Aug 1882 in TX) by his first wife, Minnie E. ("Catherine") Daniels (bn. 03 Jan 1894 TX).

I found an IGI Individual record for both on familysearch.org listing Edd's parents as James Wesley & Susan (Cartwright) Merritt.

Minnie (aka, "Catherine") was sister to my paternal grandmother, Carrie Leona Daniels of TX. Their father was Peter Lawson Daniels of AL (conflicting info says TX) and Martha Eliza "Catherine" Rog(g)ers Daniels.

Thanks & happy ancestor hunting!

jean-carrie in CA

Merritt/Marriott DNA Project

We at the Marriott/Merritt DNA Project want to identify all of our major North American families by DNA and immigrant. This will set the stage for identifying and connecting to the ancient families. To do this, we need further participation from all lines.

Currently in the project, we have:
North Carolina Merritts: well covered (at least four major haplogroups)
Thomas Merritt of Rye NY family: awaiting results
Virginia Colonials: Essex and Surry County Merritts (two haplogroups)

Notably missing are descendants of the following families:
Henry Merritt of Scituate
Kent and Cecil Co MD Merritts
Virginia: Major William Marriott’s descendants
Canadian Merritts

It grows clear that our ancient families are NOT all related by DNA. These findings will significantly impact follow on research. JOIN us and help identify these ancestors!

Thanks to the Thomas of Rye Merritts for this focus!

MERRITT DNA IN THE NEWS

Merritt/Marriott, E3b Haplogroup – updated results show that our Most Recent Common Ancestor was probably living closer to 1500 in Long Clawson, Leicestershire England, rather than 1600s Virginia where we were looking. Findings from the I1c Haplogroup have also eliminated some early Merritts as relations to us, thus simplifying our effort.

Merritt/Marriott, I1c Haplogroup – newly examined DNA results shed light on this ancient family of Marriotts, which may originate out of Northampton shire England. One of the surprises of these findings is that Edward Merritt of Essex VA/Stokes NC belongs to this Haplogroup, and not to the E3b family that he lived near in Virginia.

Please contact me, or JOIN us!
Mike Merritt - outlndr@msn.com (E3b Merritt)
Project Home Page: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/m/merritt/
