Hello All,

New information has come to light on the possibility of an additional daughter for Thomas Mershon and Susannah Stockton. This new daughter’s name is Susan Sophia Mershon (b: 1768) and she would have quite possibly married Matthew Griggs (b: 1761). I have updated my webpage on the “GRIGGS/MERSHON Family Connections” located at http://www.thegriggsfile.com/mershon/index.htm and have included information about this possible daughter.

With the help of Dave Richardson, this new information was found on a website on the internet, but unfortunately the owner of the site does not provide any supporting data. I would appreciate it if all interested Mershon researchers would take a look at the above webpage and advise me if they are aware of any supporting or refuting data.

Many thanks for your help, Frank
URL: http://www.thegriggsfile.com
I thought this might help some of you researching James Mershon (AR/LA). Back in 1931, the DAR found his first wife's grave and recorded it. This is all the information that was given:

Gathered by Mrs. R.V. Reeves, Oak Grove, La., for General Wm. Carroll Chapter, Oak Grove, W. Carroll Par.

From a family burial ground in an old field in W. Carroll Parish near Bayou Macon, on "Shrock place" that borders this small river - 3 miles from Oak Grove. There were other tombs. One is left. Copy of inscription below:

"Amanda Ann wife of James Mershon
born July 19, 1834 - died Jan. 4, 1853"
United above
Divided below"

Exact copy - large, well preserved slab on tomb. Was called the Fleming Place many years ago. Amanda Ann Mershon was a Miss Fleming.

That was all that was given. I have no connections to the Mershons, just came across this info and thought it might help some of you!

Hi. I am looking for how this family is connected to the Mershon family tree.

Daniel Mershon (b. 1841) married Susanna Bossard. They had the following children:
•	Candas Mershon (b. 1869)
•	John Loy Mershon (b. 1872)
•	Howard Calvin Mershon (b. 1881)
•	Laura Blanche Mershon (b. 1884)
•	Oscar Allen Mershon (b. 1885)
•	Ira Lewis Mershon (b. 1894)

Daniel’s father was also named Daniel Mershon. I don’t know the name of Daniel’s mother.

Can someone tell me how Daniel Mershon (the father) connects to the Mershon family tree?

Thanks, Susan
Hi,
This message thread was originally posted in 2000 and a reply was posted in 2001. Since this message board also goes to the mailing list, I’ll summarize the first two postings:

2000 - Tracing family lineage on James Mershon/m
b: abt 1806 in Virginia. Lived in Chicot Co. AR, (Lake Village) in 1860.
Children names: Amanda , b:1853, Julia b:1856
Emma b:1859, James A Dundan Mershon/m b 1852
Wife's name: Eveline Corley b:1829 in MS.
James Mershon was in MS on the 1840 census.

2001 - found more on james mershon--1st marrage to Amanda Ann Fleming jun 5 -1851 2nd marriage to Eveline Dunkin--she was a corley- when she and james wed she had a son James A. Dunkin-James and Evelin had three girls --last word i have of him is 1858 he bough land in East Carroll Parish, La 154 acres. He must have died some time in the next 8 years because, Evelinemarried William W. Gillis on 1-26-1868 in Chicot County, Ar.

My posting (quite a few years later) is: Does anyone know who James's parents are? I am trying to connect him to the Mershon family.

For those who are on the mailing list and not the message board, I hope that this makes sense as to the James Mershon that is being discussed.
Susan
Janet,
Hi. After your posting, I reviewed my sources again. The marriage certificate for Thomas Montgomery and Della Snider states that he is widowed. It also states that he was born in 1866, making him 21. This seems unlikely that he was widowed at such a young age. After looking at the various Ohio censuses, I am thinking that most likely he was born between 1846 and 1849. This way, he would be in his early 20s for his first marriage to Flora.

I have found at least 4 children born to Della and Thomas, between the years of 1888 and 1895. I would have thought that Della would have brought these children into her marriage with Alexander Mershon. However, none are living with them in the 1900 census. I found the oldest child, Starling Montgomery, age 11, living as a boarder with an unrelated family in the 1900 census. I have no idea what happened to the younger children.

I have looked around to see if I have confused various family units, but nothing else seems to make more sense. I am interested in your continued thoughts.

Have a great week-end.
Susan
It is actually very possible that Jamie and Jennie are one and the same as well and it's just a transcription error. I actually just merged the two in my own family tree because in reviewing the census record again, it very much looks like Jennie.

Now, a question about Thomas Milton MONTGOMERY- if he was married to Flora with the date listed- that makes him only 13, going from the 1866 birthdate. I do know that there is a Montgomery connection into the Mershon family tree, a distant cousin visited my Grandfather about 15 years ago stating, they were related and explaining some of the family tree- unfortunately, my Grandfather didn't recall a lot of the conversation and he is now deceased. Because of this story- I just always assumed that Della's maiden name was Montgomery, based on the impression presented by this cousin. To this day, I'm still trying to track down this mysterous cousin from Cali. I am hoping to sort more of this family out gradually- my Great Aunt and I are starting to reconnect so hopefully she will be a zest of fresh information.

(On a side note- Iva's second husband is actually Wilbur, which was just recently brought to my attention from my family, that is my misinformation on his name that is floating the internet)

~Janet

I completely agree that Della and Delcinia are the same person. I've actually thought that from the start. In fact, I was just reviewing my family tree and noticed that I had 17 Aug 1869 as the birthday for Della and Aug 1869 as a birthday for Delcinia so I'm pretty sure they are one and thesame. I still do however, have an additional wife- Jamie Mershon, but I'm not sure of any other information.

Have you found any information about Della's parents?

Hi. I have Alexander married 3 times with 12 children. Please let me know your thoughts.

There has been discussion over whether Delcina and Della were the same person. Here is my current understanding. Della Snider and Delcinia Montgomery were the same person. Delcinia (Della) Snider married Thomas M. Montgomery on Aug 18, 1887. After Thomas died in 1897, Delcinia married Alexander Mershon on Oct 10, 1897. Delcina died three days after Iva was born in 1906. Alex was not married at the time of the 1910 census. According to the 1920 census, he was married to Jennie. I have not been able to locate a marriage date.

1 Alexander Mershon	b: May 29, 1866 Clermont County, Ohio	d: February 08, 1939 Paint Township, Highland County, Ohio Cemetery Info: Gilboa Cemetery

+Delcina (Della) Snider	b: August 1869 Ohio	d: January 06, 1906	m: October 10, 1897
2 Eva D.
According to my research, Alexander was married 5 times and had children by all of his wives. I've struggled sorting out which of the wives belong to each of his childern, but on a whole, from what I've unraveled, Alex did father at least 11 children. As for Herbert and Delbert, I believe their mother was Nina, as the other post states, but I have no further information. This is a line of my family I'm always working on and hope to get better clues on this matter soon. Also, I'd check with the www.mershonassoc.com and see what they say. Their records aren't ALWAYS accurate, but they are working always to improve that.

Janet

Family search lists the mother of Delbert Mershon born 12 Aug 1889 as Nina Thurman, the father as Alexander Mershon.
Parents for Herbert Mershon born 19 may 1888 are listed as Nina Thurman and Alex Mershon.
These are from extracted birth records from the area.

Nina Thurman is listed in the 1900 census with her parents as divorced and the mother of two children, so this could easily have been the case.

Hi,
In the 1900 census for Alex Mershon in Ohio, it shows that he has 2 sons. They are Herbert Mershon (b. May 1888) and Delbert (b. Aug. 1889).
Hi,
In an email thread under Alabama, Willie Hunt, Jr was living with his aunt, Mary Ida Hunt Mershon in 1910. With this information, I tried to figure out if I could determine how this family was connected to the Mershon family tree.

I found an Ida Mershon married to an S. E. Mershon in the 1900 census in Alabama. The census said that S. E. Mershon and his parents were born in GA.

I found an Ayers Mershon (age 38), wife Becky (age 36) and son (Simeon? - age 9) in the 1870 cenesus. However, I can't trace Ayers to any of the Mershon family trees.

Are the above thoughts correct? Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Susan

Hi,
In the Crow family message threads, there are some postings about Mershons. Rebecca Ann Mershon (b. about 1823 in Alabama) married John Wesley Crow (b. 1823 in Knoxville, TN). Rebecca is the daughter of Henry Timothy Mershon (who is not on the 1850 census and presumably dead) and Mary Ann Manson (b. 1799 in South Carolina).

I can't figure out how Henry Timothy Mershon fits into the Mershon family tree. Can someone help out with whom he is a descendant of?

Thanks and have a Happy New Year!
Susan
Susan,
There were quite a few Andrew Jackson Mershons in Scioto Co. OH. Thus, the confusion.

Athol is not the son of Andrew Jackson Mershon (1831-1903), who was the son of Henry Mershon and Cassandra Hibbs, and Mary Jane McClary. Rather, he is the son of Andrew Jackson Mershon (1856-1938), who was the son of Stevens Mershon and Mary Ann Hall, and Mahala Catherine Shaw, daughter of Charles Wesley Shaw and 3rd wife Elmira Harbert.

The 1900 Scioto Co. census shows in Union Twp. Jackson Mershon, 43; Mahala, 44; Athel, 17; Florence, 15; Clay, 13; Jackson, 9.

Steven (or Stevens - his grandmother's surname) Mershon was a brother to the Andrew Jackson Mershon who married Mary Jane McClary.

Both the Andrew Jackson Mershons mentioned above had sons also named Andrew Jackson.

Hi,
I've been looking at this email thread (and the archives) and this is how I think that David fits into the Mershon family tree.
David --> Elmer (b. 1906) --> Athel/Athol (b. 1883) (Stated in a previous posting.)

But who was Athel's father. I think that it was Andrew Jackson Mershon (b. 1831)

Andrew Jackson Mershon had 11 children born between 1858 and 1881. Athel was born in 1883 and would have been Andrew's 12th child.
Andrew's wife was Mary Jane McCleary. Was she the mother of Athel or did she die and Andrew remarry?

This has been an interesting puzzle to try and figure out. The one above from Betsy Crull gives his family info. It looks as though he has not been buried. The original message in the thread was from someone seeking his family so that his remains could finally be put to rest. Maybe the original poster was able to contact the family.

David,
If you send me your email address, I will send your question to our genealogist, Teresa Mershon. In due time, she will contact you. Please consider registering on our website www.mershonassoc.com. It is currently up but undergoing some “reconstruction” (whatever that means). There is a forum that you might find helpful. Our family came from NJ and then to KY. Many then moved to Ohio and beyond; my branch settled in IA.

You have a great name--we have a son named David Wayne Mershon and he is now 42.

Thank you for writing.

Jim Mershon
Kathryn Rosa Mershon

Kathryn was born 14 December 1894 in Louisville, a daughter of James A. Mershon and Rosa Keck. In 1910 Kathryn was living in Louisville with her sister Desdamona, and her brothers William and James. In 1918 she sailed for England, and returned a year later. She may have lived in Detroit around 1915-1918. She also may have resided in Louisville. Her occupation was secretary with some U.S. government agency during World War One. I have lost any track of her after 1918. Any help would be welcome.

I have been attempting to determine if one of the unidentified daughters of Thomas MERSHON and Susannah STOCKTON might have married Matthew GRIGGS (b: ca 1761) of South Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey.

I have put together a webpage that includes all of the information that I have accumulated on this possibility and would encourage anyone who has an interest in the GRIGGS and/or MERSHON families to please visit the site. The webpage can be found at http://www.thegriggsfile.com/mershon/index.htm.

Any additional information that might support or refute this possibility would be greatly appreciated.

Frank

Hi James,

Thank you for your suggestions, I appreciate them very much. Unfortunately, I went to the Mershon Association website, and it said: “Site Temporarily Unavailable”, hopefully it will be up and running soon. I also sent an email last Sunday to Bill Trott, the Mershon Association’s genealogist, and hope that he will respond in the not too distant future.

In the mean time, I’ll take you up on your offer of a copy of the Mershon Newsletter. My email address is frankgriggs@juno.com.

Thanks for your help, Frank
