Wow! Aunt Ruth made a clown? I went to visit another 2nd cousin in VA several years back. She was a daughter of Harold Powell, Your grandmother's other brother. She had a sampler made by Anna B. Brenneman, Malinda's mother about 1809, I think. She had it framed. I've been told in the past year that she has died. I hope her daughter is taking care of it. I took a picture of it while I was there. I have a copy of the Brenneman History, by Albert Gerberich, which lists all the children of George and Malinda. My dad is listed, but no children of Grace, just that she was married 6-9-1897 to John B Messenger and they lived in Cairo. This book starts with a Melchior Brenneman living in Switzerland in 1631 and was imprissioned in the castle, Thun for being a Mennonite. His son, also Melchior moved to Germany and then to Lancaster Co., PA. I've been there where they settled in PA. Anyway, we come down from 5 Melchiors in a row and then to Anna B. Brenneman who married Henry Miller and they moved to OH where Malinda was born and then to IL. I have seen the graves of Anna and Henry at the Maxy Cemetery at Pleasant Mound, Bond Co. IL.
BTW, we are related to Amy Brenneman from TV on this line. I have corresponded with one of her brothers who lives in the Bay area of CA.

How great is this! On the list you sent me you have Grace and Malcolm both born on Feb. 1, 1872. I have soem of the family silver given to be in 1970 by Aunt Maud and also a clown made by Aunt Ruth. I live in Vermont which is where The Boardmans and the Messengers were the first to settle Norwich. Good to hear from you. Sarah Messenger

We are talking about the same one! She had an older brother named Malcolm G. Powell. He was the oldest of George W. Powell and Malinda Brenneman Miller Powell. My dad was born in Wood River. And so was I. I have a photo of all Grace's siblings and an article when two of the sisters married in Alton. Grace was born 01 Feb 1872. My cousin, Marie, daughter of Herb Powell, my dad's oldest brother has the family Bible of George W. Powell and all the children are recorded:

Grace Powell, my grandmother was born in Alton, Illinois around 1876. She married John Boardman Messenger and they lived in Cairo, Illinois. Her one son John B. was born in 1898 and was mentally challenged from the age of 3 due to a high fever. Her other son Eli Powell (my father) was born in 1911 and died in 1991. He raised his family in Indianapolis. We must be talking about two different Grace Powell Messengers. I was born in 1949 and we visited my grandmother in Cairo many times and also her sisters who lived in Alton - Ruth, Maude, Mabel, and Nell. A brother had died earlier. So maybe your father was the son of one of the sisters, making Grace his aunt. If so I have letters from those sisters as they lived to a ripe old age - Maude lived to about 105. Sarah Messenger

Grace was my dad's aunt! I remember meeting her once when I was about 9 years old (1959). Malcolm Powell was my grandfather. My dad was Joseph R. Powell, a twin. His twin's name was Fred. Ring any bells? I have a picture of Grace probably in her 80's. I know one of Dad's cousins interviewed her in her later years on the family. She told her that their step-grandmother, Parthinia Powell was called Parfinny. She and William lived in Pleasant Mound, IL and they would go visit on their farm when she was little. I don't have the marriage on Eli, nor any children. But I can tell you much on the Powell family history. I have them traced now beyond Eaton and Holley Powell who lived in Halifax Co. NC and moved to Clarksville, TN around 1818. My nephew submited DNA to the Powell family project and we have matched a man who is descended from Aaron and Mary Powell of Halifax Co. NC. So, this points to my theory that Aaron was Eaton's father. Our match is 35 out of 37 markers.

Asa Messenger and Ann Lightfoot were married 20 Dec 1835 at Lawrence Co., AL. Ann was the daughter of Sarah (Sally) Allen and Dr. Thomas Lightfoot. Asa was the publisher of the North Alabama newspaper. Searching for the death date for Ann Lightfoot Messenger and her grandfather, David Allen. David Allen died sometime in 1842, probably after 2 April.
He died in Tuscumbia, Colbert or Lawrence Co.

First of all, are you still on here.... I am from Elijah and Lucretia Messinger/Messenger, he was the son of Isaac, Joseph, Nathan, Edward. I want more info on this family. I was told at one time that my Elijah and Lucretia only had a daughter and that my grandfather couldn't have been from Elijah and Lucretia. But now have proof that he was their son, I also found a daughter that died at the age of six. I am looking for Elijah Messenger's grave, more records of them living in Conneticut, and Ohio if any.Trying to find out where they could have been when Elijah died. Elijah born 1758 in Hartford, Conn. no death year. Lucretia was a Matson she was born 1763 and died in Morrow County Ohio 1831. Thanks MAG

Janet: Percival was drafted for Civil War died Jan 3 1863 and is buried in Tn. I have his file and am trying to get the pension file. Laura first m. Bedient who lived two farms away and when he died she filed again for pension for the two minor children that survived. Second time she filed her uncle by marriage Stephebn Messinger was her guardian or the kids guardian one or the other. I am working with one of the guys at NEHGS trying to figure out something to prove relationship. He suggested perhaps Cyrus was listed as next of kin for pension, don't think so.

Philip Frederick Messenger

Philip Frederick Messenger, age 78, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, May 25, 2011.

Born in Marion, Ohio to the late Genevra (Rice) and Miles Messenger. Philip was the youngest of eight children.
He graduated from Harding High School class of 1950, he played football, baseball, and loved fishing.
Later in life he was an avid golfer.

After high school he served in World War II as a Paratrooper, Airborne Division.
He owned and operated long time produce market (Messenger's Market). The market was in operation for over 30 years starting in 1960. The market became his pride and joy and was always a family affair, employing many cousins, aunts, uncles and of course his four children.
Philip had many fond memories in Marion and lots of friends. He was known to many for his keen sense of humor.

Philip is survived by children, Bambi (Dan) Bach, Jan (Bob Drollinger) Bruno, and Michelle (Phillip) Garrett; three grandchildren; one great-grandson; three sisters, Esther Dunbar of Marion, Mary Ellen Barnhouse of Florida, and Helen Young of Westerville. Ohio. He was formerly married to Carolyn Ann Harrold who survives in Columbus, Ohio.

He is preceded in death by his only son, Philip B. Messenger; two sisters, Ruth Kirby and Rachel DeSimone; and two brothers, Jim Messenger and David Messenger.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2011 at Gunder/Hall & Folk Funeral Directors with long time family friend Rev Bob Jones officiating.
Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3, 2011 at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

I am looking for any information about my Messenger line. I have the census records for my G-G-Grandfather, James Eli Messenger. He was born in either 1833 or 1835 in port Williams, Nova Scotia, Canada. He married Armanilla Litch and moved to Georgetown, Massachusetts. I can trace her line back to England in the 1500's, but nothing for his.

I found the following in the Georgetown death records: James E. Messenger died February 5, 1917 in Georgetown, age 83 years, 3 months, 10 days, of a cerebral hemorrhage. Occupation: carpenter. Born in Port Williams, Nova Scotia. Buried in Harmony Cemetery, Georgetown.
Parents: Eli Messenger, born in Port Williams, N.S. and Christine Banks, born in Port Williams, N.S.

According to the 1910 census, James became a U.S. citizen in 1848, and his wife in 1853.

If anyone has any information about Eli Messenger or Christine banks, I would love to hear from you...thanks!

Hello Messengers! I am trying to get a little more research competed in my quest to find out a little more of my Messenger past - My Grandfather Robert Lewis Messenger passed away before my Birth (76), he used to tell my dad he was teh youngest brother of Dally Messenger the rugby player, but there was a large split in the family (with a few sisters also?) and they all broke away - whether this is true or not I have no idea, I have the Dally M "the Master" book and nothing is written there, but I managed to get in contact briefly with "Brick" messenger (the famous sailor Boy Messengers widow) and she confirmed a big family issue! Weird....I haven't had the chance to meet and speak further with her yet (by chance my German language teacher was married to a direct relation of the "Dally Messengers" and I have gone on from there!)

I have my Grandfathers wedding certificate from "Essendon North parish" in Victoria, from May 1941. It states that his Father was "Harold Henry Messenger" and his mother "Jean Amy Goldsmith".

Anyway, if anyone had some similar data on this family split, Robert Lewis, Harold Henry or Jean Amy it would be most appreciated :-)

Raised in "Packerland," Green Bay, WI, where he was born on April 2, 1920, it was easy for him to ignore his artistic talents and to excel in football and track.

As the first Cub Scout in the U.S., he grew to love wooded Door County, Wisconsin.

WW II interrupted his liberal arts studies and athletics at Lawrence in Appleton, WI, where he became a member of Beta Theta Pi.

Above all, he claimed that he worked hardest at and derived the most satisfaction from his happy 62-year marriage to Betty, who survives him. Numerous kin and friends worldwide share her feelings of loss.

Sorry not to have got back sooner but I went to bed! I have been on a 12 hour day today so this is the first chance I have had to get back to you. The messengers of Marlesford are a mystery to me! Williams father is John - I belive his grandparents are Thomas and Elizabeth. I requested Williams birth certificate and also Johns marriage certificate yesterday so that will confirm it. There were 2 William messengers born in Marlesford - one in 1847 and one in 1848. I believe my William is the 1847 one as there is a Christening record for him in 1847. The certificates will confirm! I will gladly forward copies via e-mail if you have not got them.

I live in London -just on the edge of Essex. What about you?

My William decends from from Charles Messenger born 1832 Marlesford. He is the son of Thomas Messenger and Elizabeth Hunt. I think your William decends from John Messenger born Marlesford 1820.

Charles married Mary? in 1856 and had 3 children William, Alice and Walter.

William married Margaret Hayward in 1883 and had 6 children Walter, Charles,Margaret (my Grandmother)Maryanne,William and Maud.

My William was born in 1847 in Marlesford. He married Sarah Ann Elizabeth Dean. She is the mother of my great grand mother. I have been unable to find a death for her. He then appears on the 1891 census as married to a Mary and has further children - Selina c1883, Charles c1885, Ellen c1890. They have two more children Arthur and William.
My Williams parents are John and Ann Salsbury. William moved to London and all the children and wives are from there.
His brother George is married to a Margret ?Coupland. He is working at Hotham Hall I think. He was born in Marlesford but has moved to Yorks. The other brother and sisters are Abraham c1844, Charles 1850, Sarah Ann 1852, Lewis 1854, Robert 1856 -1938, Thomas 1858, Hannah 1861-1862

Hi, further to my earlier message, I found some more of my Messengers on an Ancestry tree. Ann's father was Jospeh Messenger born 1754 in Southerfield. Josephs father was George Messenger born 1711 in Skinburness Cumberland. The family goes back in Skinburness to about 1663.
I have found on Holme Cultram Surveys 1538 and 1596 Messengers living in the Abbeytown Southerfield is very near Abbeytown, and about 10 miles from Skinburness and Silloth,
Messengers also appear in the pipe rolls for Inglewood Forest in 1299.
Anyone researching the family from Holme Cultram, and Skinburness area please get in touch I'd love to hear from you.

When I was younger I had a class project to do a family tree and my Grandma Audrey Messenger has family history back to the middle 1500's when her family first came from England. When I was younger I had a class project to do a family tree and my Grandma Audrey Messenger has family history back to the middle 1500's when her family first came from England. When I was younger I had a class project to do a family tree and my Grandma Audrey Messenger has family history back to the middle 1500's when her family first came from England. Only just noticed your reply. My husband is the decendant of James Garner's cousin. James Garner was 20 when he died on his headstone buried in Frisby on the Wreake graveyard. Thomas was James' dad and Thomas was the brother of my husbands relative. I have all the newspaper reports of the murder and it even made The Times. I don't think that the James Garner I am talking about was married as there is no mention of a wife in the papers. Never really identified him on the 1841 census but found his mum & dad Thomas & Elizabeth Garner in Frisby on the Wreake in 1841 and following census. Don't really now anymore about James other than the murder reports and I couldn't find his baptism either in Frisby.
My husbands ancestors do come from Hoby way back a Daniel and Sarah Garner.

I am very intrigued myself about the murder of james garner, as i have a james garner in my family tree who lived in the neighbouring village of Hoby. He dissappears from the census around this time and his wife is shown shortly after in a workhouse. I am wondering if our james garners are one of the same. if you have any more information i would be very grateful.
