Re: Looking for descendants of William Adrian Messer

William Adrian Messer was my grandfather. However, he was most likely not the son of Sam Messer.

Sam Messer spent a lot of time in Kentucky away from his wife and family who lived in the Cadet section of Big Stone Gap (this is where I grew up). During one of these long absences his wife "befriended" a store owner in East Stone Gap named William Hood. William Adrian Messer and one of his sisters were most likely the children of William Hood. This was quiet well known in the community at the time. I was told that William Messer took one of my uncles, Jim, to visit William Hood in the store he owned in East Stone Gap.

Feel free to email me at max.messerjr@yahoo.com.

William Adrian Messer was my grandfather. William was most likely not a Messer.

Sam Messer was gone for long periods of time. From what I understand it was months at a time. He spent a lot of this time in Kentucky. During one of these long absences his wife "befriended" a small store owner in east stone gap named William Hood. William Hood was mostly likely William Adrian Messer and his sister's father. This was well known in the community, Cadet, where they lived. I know the location of their old homestead.Feel free to email me at max.messerjr@yahoo.com. about him

Okay I just talked to mother and she said the "E" in Mary E Messer's name stood for Ellen (Mary Ellen). This makes since since my aunt's name is Mary Ellen. It also means that the "E" does not represent her maiden name. So the Salmon connection could very well be correct. Mother also told me that Grandpa's sister Bessie had a daughter named Rhoda who lives in VA. So who knows. Please contact me.

Oh and I was wrong about father's birthday. He was born January 14, 1940.

I'm not sure who is doing the Salmon connection and I'm not sure it is correct. From census records grandfather's mother is listed as Mary E Messer (1900 and 1910 census records). Not saying the Salmon connection is wrong but I'm not entirely sure it is correct. I have only one family picture of George Washington Messer Sr. and Mary Messer with George Washington Messer Jr. as a baby.

My father's name is George Andrew Messer (mother called him Andrew). He was the oldest child of George Washington Messer Jr. and Doris Messer (my grandmother's maiden name was Seward). I'm sorry to say my father passed away two weeks ago.

Assuming the Andrew you are referring to is my father, you are incorrect regarding his birth year. George Andrew Messer was born January 12, 1940 in Richmond VA.

My grandfather and Doris Messer divorced after my father was a grown man. Grandpa married two other woman after that. His 2nd wife died in 1983 and Grandpa's 3rd wife is still living in Kermit WV. She is the mother of the person who stated to be grandpa's step daughter.

Here is the link to my grandfather's autobiography written in 1930 while in prison. He was sentenced to 45 years but was pardoned after 9 years.

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0Bz-5hHK3KkDdZWM4MjYwNzktZThm...

This is very interesting. Please scan and email me the picture you have of Grandpa. I can tell if it's him or not. My email is jasonm@ami.com. I will attempt to do the same.
Not so sure that it IS incorrect. Then again, I'm not sure that it isn't, either.
I just posted a reply to your last message, about the autobiography written in prison. I don't know if you have gotten that or not. Or if you even will! I am not at all comfortable with all this internet stuff, so don't know if I did it right.
Bottom line--my oral family history leads me to believe that I am your Father's half-sister, born the same month and year that he was! NO PROOF! Just circumstantial things. Maybe you could help me find out one way or the other?
Thanks,
Patricia Apelt

Am very interested in how I might obtain a copy of your grandfather's prison journal(autobiography). I have a very valid reason to be interested. I think! Maybe you would know more than I do!

From circumstantial evidence, and my cousin's verbal family history, it appears that I just might have been your Grandfather's (unknown!) daughter!!! I was born in Jan. 1941, at a time when--as the story goes--he was living with my Mother in Hot Springs. I only heard about his first wife, and a son that was also born in Jan. 1941 (Andrew?) quite recently from Rhoda Burks,- rhodaburks@aol.com - who is doing the Salmon connection to George, Sr. She sent several pictures of the Salmons, but only had one of George, Jr. as an adult. I do not look anything like him, but favor his Mother very much, right down to the dimple in the chin!
As I understand Rhoda's history of the family, George, Sr.'s mother was Martha, but called "Patsy". I was known as "Patsy" for the first 3 years of my life. My Mother's husband had been dead too long before my birth to have been my Father, and it was my Mother's niece who told me about George, Jr. living with her at that time. Seems she had dated him when they were younger, so they were friends.
All of this is NOT proven--the only way to do that would be a DNA test, and I haven't pushed that, mostly because it really doesn't matter at this late date.
Would you please get back to me on this? Especially if you can shed any light on the story to prove or disprove.
Thanks,
Tricia Apelt

This is an interesting concept and perhaps the solution to my brick wall. I have a Niklaus Messer, my ggrandfather that arrived in New Orleans in 1851 with his wife, Catherine Leuenberger, and son, Bennett Messer. Where I can trace Catherine back to the 1500's in Switzerland, the first Niklaus shows up is when he marries Catherine in Durrenroth, Bern, Switzerland. I know that they spoke German, but can't find him in Switzerland, so far. Any other information before that time is congesture only. Does this ring any bells with anyone?
Thanks for the info Barbara. Always as I grew up the family name was always referred to as German and the meaning in German was 'knife'. My GM even told me they spoke German in the house when she moved with my GF to Texas where his family lived. I thought I was up the wrong way when all I could find were connections to England, but double checking found I had the correct connections. I just didn't know if it was a transcribing error from the old style writing, but on some old documents it is 'Mercer' until Peter named his children 'Messer' although one still had Mercer.

Will send you what I have on William Messer.

Bill

I am a Messer researcher from Sydney Australia. I am making up a data base of (mainly) MESSER names. It started off as Messer's in London but now gone to England also Scotland wide ! If you Google the name MEASURES it gives the other names that came from it - among them Messer/Maser. There is a fascinating e-book about the history of the MESSER surname and those who came from Europe (the Celts and Danes to France, Germany) to England and Scotland (the latter is where the MERCER's are mainly found). I would love to know more details of your William born 1762. I am still to broaden the data list to any other name than Messer eg Measures, although I have found them on family search - other than spelling variants (Meser, Maser). Cheers Barbara

My 4th GGF, William Messer, 1762-1817, was the first to use the Messer name. His father, Peter Mercer, 1738-1796, was the last to use the Mercer name from the Middelesex England area arriving in America around 1670 and living for several generations in the Norfolk, VA area.

I would like to know why they changed their name as the Messer family always said they were of German origin, but I only find this connection to England.

Any thoughts?
