My grandfather was Antonio Mete. I recently went to Conflenti, Catanzaro, Reggio Calabria, which is the town he is supposedly from but didn't have much luck finding out about the family. I did speak to a butcher in the town with the last name of Villella and the Villella's are related to the Mete family through the marriage of Rosalina Nero, sister of Mary (Nero) Mete, my paternal grandmother. Rosalina (Nero) Villella's son and two surviving daughters live in Rhode Island. There was another sister to Rosilina and Mary named Concetta who lived in Conneticut and a brother Louis in Rhode Island. I believe my grandmother was in the US at the age of two. I didn't have much time to spend in Conflenti but I did see mention of one of the Cimino family members on the town memorial to war heroes and Carlo Cimino and his family live in Providence. I believe that my grandfather Antonio's father's name was Matteo, but don't have proof of that. I am named after Matthew, my father Louis' brother who I assume was name after my great grandfather...

So what was my grandfather to your faamily? His name was Antonio. Came here w/brother Francesco. My gramps was born 1888 approx. Francesco was younger. They came heree about 1917, on shiip listed from Catanzaro. I know he had many brothers that stayed in Italy, one eventualaly moved to Austaila, another to South America. His cousin, Carlos Cimino, lives in Rhode Islaand, has visiteed relatives in Italy, and his daughter, Paula, went to Austrailaa, many years aago on a teacher program. I am friends w/alot of Metes on facebook, some from Canadaa, some from Austraila. So somewhere down the line we r cousins. My da, Luigi, and uncle Natale passed away. Their oldest brother, Matteo, died at age 21 in 1941 so he never married. Unfortunately, there r only 4 of us, 2 cousins, Donnan and Dyanne Mete, and I have 1 brother Matthew, who change the spelling of his last name. My gramp married Maria Nero, who camae hereee verey young, no accent in her speech. Uncle Francesco had 4 kids, John, Joe, Julia and Helen. Only Joe is alive and had 2 sons, John and Joseph, 1 died in an oil rig accident. So as far as Mete relatives theree r only us in America and we have some distant cousins in Connecticut, of whom I met 1 named Anthony, younger than me. He actually lived w/me while going to school in Rhode island. Of gramps family, he also had 2 daughters, Francesca {which leads me to believe she wsa named after his dad, as was my uncle Francesco. I only have my Auntie Anna left, lives in Ohio. She married a sailor that was statiooned here in Newport after WW 2, and move to his hometown. They had 4 kids, but last name is Young. My gramps was overe 6 ft tall, very, vey dark, thick curly black hair, dark, almost black eyes and very big hands. Carlos said that my gramps brotherss back in Italy were over 6 ft tall!! I am 4' 9". My dad and my coloring is from the Neros side, green eyes, dark brown hair, meddium complex. Gramps was not a nice guy to his sons. Very stern, treated them like things not sons. Don't know if it was the way he was raised, but he abused my gramma and my dad, altho he was great w/the grandkids. I don't think he had a nice life in Italy as he never talked about his family or where he came from or anything, which is why I am looking for my family named Mete. U mentioned Luongo family. There r Luongos here in Rhode Island, but I do not remember if we r related. I don't seee thast side of the family aas there is noone left that I care to bother with. There r no Metes left anyway except for Dyanne and Donna that I grew up with.

Hi I am a mete from melbourne australia my parents came from sambiase calabria. Most of the mete's are from this region. Conflenti is a neighbouring village of sambiase. It is very close by and is a mountain region of the province of catanzarro so it is not uncommon for many mete's being close by in the small towns that neighbour each other. It was not uncommon for the families to once walk from sambiase to conflenti. Many times the people from sambiase would take a yearly pilgrimmage to the top of conflenti in honour of our lady's feast day something they still do to this day. I have been back to italy twice and discovered a lot. I believe the mete's you are talking about might actually be cousins of my father Francesco Mete. His father was Raeffale Mete and he had two brothers and sister. These Mete's were prominant in the town of sambiase. My grandfathers oldest brother spent some time in america after world 11 where he lived and worked there for a short period with one of his sons. He returned back to italy where he became what they called the guard of the town and he was well respected amongst the people of sambiase. His children remained in italy while my grandparents children all left and came to australia. My grandfather unfortuantely never did come as he had passed away at a young age. My grandmother and here 4 children 3 daughters and a son came to australia. My grandma' maiden name was longo who were also related to the mete's as well as i saw in one of the posts tropea. There are many longo's and tropeas in chicago who are related to the mete's and they might be able to help trace the mete's in the usa,
the longos and metes are very common in the sambiase and msot of them are teacher's, lawyers or own and run their business. My cousin from italy was recently in australia and his name is domenico mete and he has done much research into the history of the mete's. You can find his children and himself on facebook. Try to look up domenico mete francesca mete from sambiase in facebook and they will give a very comprehensive history of the mete's

I would think that my grandpa. antonio and uncle francesco were the oldest in the family, uncle frank died around 1983 and was in his 90's, he had 2 grandsons, 1 son Joe and joe has the 2 sons, my age 50's but 1 died so those r the only metes in rhode island except for us girls, me, donna and dyanne, i have a brother matthew who changed spelling to metti

paula got your message will and help if i can first up ancestry. com is of no value when checking for the mete family tree, as in the late 1940's and 1950's aproximately about 100,000 italians from calabria landed here in australia, and most of the records ,passenger lists are very vague and in some cases non existing at all,any way the names you gave are very common, so there no help, my father and grandfather came from a town called conflenti, catanzaro there name nicolino and nonno michele thats your link, hundreds of mete here maybe 1000 +

sorry I just read the other posts and I know there's a lot of us out there but I don't know who half of them are. My nonno Mete just passed away a few months ago but always talked about Sambiase Calabria. i'm not sure how all the little towns and villages work because he said that him and nonna were from catanzaro. We also have lots of relatives in Melbourne, Australia too. But more on my nonna's side. She's a Buordalone.

Hi my mother is a Mete, we live in the Toronto Canada area.
Her father was Francesco Mete, his father came here in the late 1800\s I believe when he was a teenager. I don't know his name but could find out. My grandfather Francesco lived into his 90's as did his wife my grandmother Maria Grazia Tropea. They had 9 children 2 boys and 7 girls. One boy died as a baby back in Italy. There are so many of us over here it would be hard to count as you can imagine with that many children, all marrying and having their own. They came from Sambiase Calabria, which I believe ties into one of the responses you got, which refers to the town Conflenti, I have heard my mother speak of this town many times, when she reminisces about her childhood. My Grandfather Francesco Mete also had a brother that remained in Italy and did not immigrate here. My mother went back to her town to visit about 5 years ago and got to see her cousins that she grew up and played with for the first time in 50 years. And there is also a branch that went to Australia, many there too, I am in contact with. I will update you with more, as I find it out from my mother Fiorina Mete. Good Luck.

My grandfather was a Meta (he changed his name from Mete to Meta), and he was from Calabria also. He had a brother by the name of Frank who lived in Connecticut. My grandfather's name was Philip Meta and lived in Pottsville, PA. He worked on the railroad and lived there until he did at the age of 94. I would love to have a history of our family tree but cannot seem to find one anywhere. Please let me hear from you. Thanks.

Hi! I was seeing if I could find out more about my family and found you!!! Hi I am Tom Metz'es daughter Erika. how far have you gotten? I remember my grandma Artha telling me that our grandpa Jimmys' family name had been changed before to from another name that started with a N like Naccarato or something really nothing like our present family name. Is that true or not?

Hi
Hi Erika! How cool to find you here. I am so clueless about this whole name change thing. Maybe I should talk to Aunt Mary soon as she is getting up there in years. Just don't know how much she would be willing to share after the big fued after your grandfathers death. Maybe since Uncle Sam is gone, she would be more forthcoming. She's the best link we have. Let's take this to email, mine is TNTworth@aol.com. Email me soon. Take care and say hello to your dad for me.

Toni

Hi Pat. My maiden name was Mete. My great grandparents were from somewhere in Calabria, not sure exactly where but I'll try to find out more from my dad. Tried to email you but it came back. There has always been some confusion about the Mete name in our family. One of my uncles swears it was shortened and another one changed the spelling to Metz. My grandfather always insisted it was always Mete. Not too helpful to you, I know, but wanted to let you know that there were Metes, alive and well in Oregon!

Hi Toni, my maiden name was Mete and my father is from Calabria I don't know what province. There has also been confusion on the spelling in our family, some say it was Meta and my Dad changed it after a family dispute. I'm not sure when exactly my Dad and his brothers came to the states I know he lived in New Jersey and later moved to California. His name was Joseph he had 3 brothers,Nick, Jerry & Johnny all of which lived in Phillidelphia at one time.If any of this might ring a bell with you please email at LizDav4@aol.com
