I have about 4 pages of men named Cord Meyer. The man I am looking for is Cord of Rhade who married Anne Mette Junge of there as well. My 3rd great grand father married Adelheid Meyer of Glinstedt which is a short distance south of Gnarrenburg and just above Rhade.

I would appreciate any help finding either of these families.

Rachael

Meyer from Twistringen, Germany

Wondering if anyone can help. My mother (Rita Meyer) was born in Twistringen, Germany in 1945, to Josepha Meyer. The came to the US when she was only 6, at which point her Aunt Elisabeth Meyer was already here. She said her mother and aunt were of 7 children, 6 girls and 1 boy. She believes her grandfather's name was Joseph, but wasn't sure. Can anyone help me find her cousins/their children?

My name is Jack Meyers Jr. My great grandfather name was joseph meyer , but changed his name to meyers. He was from Austria and I guess a lot of his family is from somewhere in MN. His son Andrew Meyers, was my grandpa. Married Florence (Sue) Belmore. My dad is Jack Meyers Sr. He had a sister Elizabeth (Betty), and 2 brothers Robert(Bob) and James(Jim). If this seems to help...here I am, maybe related. I hope it helped, Jack

Mary Meyer

Hello. I am looking for the parents of Mary Meyer. According to the 1925 United States Federal Census, her parents look to be one, Christ Meyer (Myre) and the other, possibly Lizzie Luebring (hard to read handwriting). The family feels Mary's mother is also a Mary. The parents was from from Prussia, possibly Hanover. The three of them supposedly immigrated to the U.S. approximately 1874, a year after the daughter, Mary, was born, this according to a census the daughter appears in after she's married - the 1900 United States Federal Census . I believe her parents may be the two same named individuals who are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cumberland, Cass, Iowa. The father referred to having died in 1914, Atlantic, Cass, Iowa. The reason I believe these to be the parents is that the daughter later married a Henry Stuva and the marriage took place in Atlantic, Cass, Iowa. I also believe the two parents to be the same named individuals found living Victoria, Cass, Iowa according to the Iowa State Census, 1895. Unfortunately, I do not know if they had other children nor have I found anything concrete to tie the two individuals buried in Greenwood Cemetery to Mary Meyer Stuva. Hoping someone may know the two individuals buried in Greenwood Cemetery and whether they had a daughter named Mary and/or the names of any other children they might have had. Thanks in advance. :)

Good point, Fern, and I raised it too. I don't get the impression that Harold was particularly socially ambitious but he certainly was professionally ambitious and his name was already well-established by 1945 so it wasn't possible to change it - - that was the explanation I got. But these are just stories of course. At the deeper levels of what people really did and why - - how can we ever know that? By the way, 2wice Magazine, vol. 4, no. 1 (mid-1990s?) has a great article rediscovering Elizabeth. (www.2wice.org)

Kreinbrook and Nancy Jane Ressler

Lewis N Kreinbrook is a son of
Herman W. Kreinbrook And Hettie Smith

Herman W.
I would find it quite plausible that Harold Burris-Meyer would want to keep his name that he'd become well known under. This just makes professional sense. Businesses still do that, people still do that. Equity. And while I'm also venturing guesses (for you're right...we can't be sure of motivations), it's also possible that Harold׳s sister was biased in his favor. Either way, their professional accomplishments were real, and many. Of that we can be really proud (family-wise).

When I get a chance to unpack my boxes of books (which include hers), I may get in touch to tell you what I have - and you can let me know if it's the same info. Regards!
Thanks Troneck, and thanks Fern! I know very little about either Harold or Elizabeth. What I did learn was probably done thru an internet search! I'm ok with hearing any information, though it's secondhand to me. While we would all like ancestors who have wonderful attitudes, we often learn that they were all too mortal. They both took the name, so I rather assume they were both responsible for the surnames arrangement, ultimately (unless someone got beaten into submission, which I doubt). They were, if nothing else, a reflection of their times. It reminds me of "Gentleman's Agreement", the movie classic. I'd love to learn more about them. Didn't they have a daughter?

I find it hard to believe it was all Elizabeth's idea for the name change.I believe Harold was socially ambitious in his own right. When they got divorced in 1945 he could have dropped the Burris name but he didn't.He married Gladys Anita Mersfelder in 1945 and gave her the Burris name.

They did take each other's names, but I regret to have to tell you that it was not for progressive reasons. Elizabeth was socially ambitious and thought 'Meyer' was too Jewish-sounding for the day (late 20s or early 30s when they got married). I had this information from Gladys Meyer, who was Harold's sister. Gladys's husband, Theodore Wolfe, ne Wolfensberger, had his name shortened by his first wife, Dr Flanders Dunbar (see Wikipedia entry), for the same reason. Autres temps? (In any case these particular Meyers were American-German Methodists and these particular Wolfensbergers were Swiss Protestants.)

I have a Julius Meyer born Dec. 1838. His birthplace is listed variously as Prussia, Hanover, and "Pieterode, Hannover." (Still working on finding such a place in or near Hanover.) His parents were John Christian Meyer and Leonore Thies (written "Thies?" as if Julius was not sure of his mother's maiden name). He was a tailor in Germany, and he emigrated to Michigan around 1865.

UPDATE: Town name could be Dieterode, not Pieterode. (First letter is partially obscured in the original record; could be either a D or a P.)

Yep, we are related. Charles and Julia were brother and sister. I looked up your name in the family tree that was given to me by one of our cousins in New Jersey. I'm assuming you are Patricia Meyer who married Carl Chan. That puts us in the 4th generation. I just added some pictures to my tree on Ancestry.com and am in the process of entering data to include the info she gave me. I only have the first 2 generations entered so far. Kathi has given me 5 generations so it will take awhile for me to complete the data entries. Lets stay in touch.
Hi
my Meyers are in South Africa - though I'm sure originally from Germany - I just haven't been able to get the right link
Do yours have any link to South Africa at all?
there's just one part I cant find information about. Angelina Meyer was married to my grandfather, Albrecht Dietrich, in 1898. the registration of marriage document states she was born in Lesotho (a landlocked country in South Africa) then in 1902 my grandfather was captured during the 2nd Anglo Boer war and sent to Bermuda as a prisoner of war. when he returned to South Africa there was no record of what had become of his wife and child. she was registered as having died in 1903 and he married my grandmother. its all such unfinished business and so sad
