Re: MICHAELS family trees

My ancestor, Philip Michaels, was born in 1767 perhaps in Germany. Family tradition has that his father or grandfather was the treasurer of the province of Landeau in Germany, and upon being accused of divulging secrets to the French, was beheaded after his estates were confiscated. His sons were brought to America by their uncle.

Philip Michaels died in Manchester Virginia (date unknown), and his wife was Mary B. Cobbs, born 1771 in Amelia Co., VA, d. September 24, 1823 in Manchester, Virginia, daughter of Samuel Cobbs, Jr and Eliza/Elizabeth Munford.

Philip and Mary Michaels had four children, Rev. Robert Michaels (my ancestor), James, Sarah, and Albert. Rev. Robert was educated to be a doctor and when he turned to the ministry was disowned by his father.

If you have any leads on this family overseas, I would love to hear them! Thanks!

Juilus (and Fanny) Michaels of Mikholishok Ancestry

I am looking for any sort of information on the Mikholishok Family from Latvia and Lithuania.

I know my great-uncle Julius was born a Mikholishok, but while living in the U.S., he had the last name Michaels. All of his decendants are now Michaels.

My own great-grandmother (Jacha) was also a Mikholishok, before marrying a Schechter.

Any other Michaels out there from this family?
I would appreciate any help you can give me regarding what you may have learned of Michael Michael or his father Jacob Michael who I believe was born in Germany. Reuban was my gg grandfather, Oliver Newton was my g grandfather, and Harry William was my grandfather. Do you know anything about Michael Michael's wife Elizabeth?
MICHAELS George M. Auburn, New York
Saturday, December 5, 1992

Former Assemblyman George M. Michaels, who cast the deciding vote to liberalize New York's abortion law in 1970, thereby ending his political career, died on Thursday, December 3, 1992 at his home in Auburn, N.Y. He was 80 years old.

He died after a long illness, according to the Brew Funeral Home in Auburn.

A Democrat, Mr. Michaels represented a largely rural, mostly conservative and heavily Roman Catholic constituency in the Finger Lakes region of west-central New York.

That put him in a difficult position on the abortion issue. An 1832 state law forbade abortion except "when necessary to save a life." In the 1960's, legislation was introduced to make New York's law the most liberal in the nation, allowing abortion in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy if a woman and her doctor agreed to it. The proposal became the most dramatic, contentious and emotional issue before the 1970 Legislature.

A groundswell for change in abortion laws, which dated to the 19th century, had been building in the country. In 1965, Colorado became the first state to lessen the restrictions on abortion. A Reversal of Conscience

Mr. Michaels personally favored a woman's right to choose but had voted against the proposed law twice at the behest of the Cayuga County Democratic Committee. He did so at the beginning of April 1970 when the bill went down to a narrow defeat.

But on April 9, he realized that the measure was doomed without his support. He rose to take the microphone, his hands trembling. "I realize, Mr. Speaker, that I am terminating my political career, but I cannot in good conscience sit here and allow my vote to be the one that defeats this bill," he declared. "I ask that my vote be changed from 'no' to 'yes.' "

His tearful reversal provided the 76th vote needed for passage. The State Senate quickly added its approval and Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller signed the bill into law. "I found myself caught up in something bigger than I am," Mr. Michaels said about his agonizing decision. "I'm just a small country lawyer."

Mr. Michaels sought a sixth term that year, but piqued county leaders denied him renomination and he lost the June primary in a four-way race.

Carmen Michaels?

I am looking for a Carmen Michaels. Her name might have been Carmenita. I don't have much information, and I am not sure how accurate it is. She lived in San Francisco, and was possibly born there. I know she was there in 1941-1943. Rumor is that she was married in November 1942, and possibly seperated or divorced her husband a short time later. She might have later gotten back with him and ...only to possibly divorce and marry someone else. She would have been anywhere from 15-22 years old about this time. She possibly lived at 916 Vallejo St, San Francisco. She went to the roller rink in San Francisco and maybe hung out with the sailors and soldiers who came ashore. Sound familiar to anyone?

I'm Kevin Michaels, the middle of 3 sons of John Wesley Michaels.

My Dad grew up in an orphanage along with his sister Ruby. The names Ethel and Olive ring somewhere in my memory.....but hey, I'm 53 and the memories of 40 years ago aren't all that clear anymore. lol Plus, Dad never spoke that much about his past.

My knowledge of the Michaels' family history is very vague, the only thing I know of my Grandfather {Dad's Dad} is that he worked for the railroad and died from an on-the-job injury, other than that my knowledge is just of Dad and our ensuing generations. I would love to hear more from anyone that has info.

Other things I've gathered are the name Moses Michaels, Dad {John Wesley} mentioned family in the Ozarks and the surname Swain is also involved somehow in the history.

Looking for William H. Michaels (1840-1918)

Hi,

I am looking for any information on William H. Michaels, who, according to the 1900 Census, was born in January 1840. He was reportedly from Allegany County, Maryland and, according to his death certificate, was the son of Philip Michael. I have been told that his middle name was Harmon.
Anyway, the earliest trace I have of him is his 27 August 1862 marriage to Rhoda Ann Kemp (1838-1892), which I believe took place in Fayette County, PA. He fought briefly in the Civil War (enlisting in 1862) but deserted on 18 July 1863. He had six children: James, Ossie Catherine, Jerusha, Harmon William, Susan Lavada, and John Mansfield. He lived in Somerset County, PA from the 1870s-1890s before moving back to Fayette County, PA, dying in Uniontown on 9 May 1918. His death certificate gives his surname as Michael and he was known to also use the spelling Micheals.
He reportedly had brothers named Ed and Lou, but I have found no evidence to support this. I have been trying to track down his ancestors for a few years now but have had no luck whatsoever, with his marriage being the earliest evidence of him.

Please let me know.
Thanks!
Ray Michaels
