I've written a summary of his life on the Find-a-Grave website: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=41...;. You can also follow the links to memorials for the artist's father who was born in Granville, France.

For a full-scale biography of the artist I can recommend the catalogue to my 1996 exhibition, "The Landscape Paintings of Louis Rémy Mignot: A Southern Painter Abroad," published by the Smithsonian Institution Press.

I have no new information to give you, but I am interested in him because my mother was a Mignot. Her family came from France and I have never found any connection to Louis Remy, but ever since I learned about him and saw his work, I've been interested. Could you share some details about him? Why is he in an unmarked grave?

Thank you.

Mignot family in UK

I am seeking information on the living descendants of the important American landscape painter Louis Rémy Mignot (b. 1831), who immigrated to the UK at the outbreak of the American Civil War and died at Brighton, Eng. on 22 Sept. 1870. He was married to Zairah ("Zadie") Cazilda Harris (1831-1880) and had one son: Rémy Granville Mignot, born 27 Dec. 1861 in Baltimore, Maryland. Rémy was a "portrait sketcher" of modest success. He married three times--twice to the same woman. His first (and second) wife was Hilda Catherine Baddeley (b. 1868) of Forest Hill, Kent. They married in 1892 and again in 1896. In 1908 Rémy Mignot married a woman named Edith (b. ca. 1888). All three marriages took place in London. By Hilda, Rémy had two children: Marjorie Cordelia (b. Liskeard, Cornwall, 1897) and Brian Boyse (b. W. Kensington, London, 1902). Marjorie Mignot married Alfred T. Riches in 1917 and had one known child: Graham Clifford Riches. Brian Mignot married in 1925 a woman with last name Clements and had one known child: Carol Mignot. There the trail ends.

I am interested in this family as a museum curator and art historian with a particular fondness for Louis Rémy Mignot, a painter of rare gifts and appalling misfortune, who still lies in an unmarked grave in Brighton.

Sarah Mignot is in my family tree. William Alexis Mignot married Sarah Hurford nee Daniel (her second marriage). They had three children Eliza, Sarah and William Alexis. I have been trying to trace Sarah afer her marriage in 1869 to Mark John Masters but no luck.

The youngest son William Alexis b 1853 maried Jane Emma Hicks in 1872. They had three children Jane Emma b 1872, Eliza b 1874 and William Alexis b 1877. Eliza is my great grandmother. She married Ernest Henry Williams in 1898. Ernest was a stoker in the Royal Navy. They had three children being Lilian May b 1899, Amy b 1905 and William Herbert 1906. The family immigrated to Australia in 1913 when Ernest trnsferred to the Austrlia Navy.

Would appreciate any info on Mark John Master and Sarah.

Catherine

Have only recently become aware of MIGNOT postings and now hope to further my knowledge of this line - and maybe help someone else with what I have.

A brother of my Great Grandfather married Sarah MIGNOT 7 March 1869 in Shoreditch. He was Mark John MASTERS. Both aged 21 (according to entry on copy of certificate that I have). Sarah's Father is given as William Alexis MIGNOT bricklayer deceased.

I have other references to events concerning other MIGNOT's.
`Including in 1861 census a Sarah MIGANT - Sarah MIGNOT in brackets. She is shown as a widow of 49 years with children Eliza Maria 15 years, Sarah 14 and William Alex 8. The latter probably the William Alex (1853 -1894)who married Jane HICKS June 1872.

I note variations in spellings of surname - MIGNOT, MIGNET and Alex, Alexis, Elisex, Elizex.

Any help from anyone would be appreciated.

Tony

Sorry, I have only just started this a few months ago.

My paternal great great grandmother was Eliza Mignot b 1875 to William Alexis Mignot (1853-1894)who married Jane Emma Hicks. Eliza married Ernest Williams, a stoker in the Royal Navy. They emigrated to Australia around 1913 when Ernest transferred to the Australia Navy. They had three children, the youngest being a son, my grandfather.

Did you get any further back than Alexis Mignot and Suzanne Grenon?

Richardson is on my mother's side, but I do not have a George Walter in my tree.

Kind regards
Catherine

Hi, I'm not sure if I discussed this with you or not, but you might already know what I'm going to say. The Annie Estelle you mention is my mom. The Annie I'm interested in is the one who married Ferdinand A. Mignot (son of Charles and Amelia LeConte). It's easy to mix up the Annies since there are quite a few in the Mignot line. Thanks again for the information you sent me.

I think you all will find this interesting to say the least. I have an etching that was done by one Tho Oldham Barlo. Now what is interesting about this is: the original painting is done by T P Rossiter and L R Mignot. Rossiter was born in the early 1800's and died in 1891. And due to the life span of Mignot I Therefore suspect that L R Mignot had begun painting "Home of Washington" and Rossiter finished it.. It is a painting of Washington and another man, that I can't make who it is, and their wifes and children on the porch of Mt Vernon over looking the landcsape and I think the Patomic river. I am trying to find out more about it and when I do I shall let you know.
If you or anyone else has information on this, please let me know.
Hope you found this as interesting as I did.
Dennis

Who is L.R. Mignot - artist 1800's

I have been researching my mother's family, the Mignots and I ran across a reference to L.R. Mignot. He was an artist; painted landscapes, among them "Otsego Lake" and "A Winter View from Newburgh" probably during the mid-1800's. If anyone can shed some light on this man, I would very much appreciate it. Thank you.

L.R. Mignot is Louis Remy Mignot

Because of my own interest for my ancestors and their relations I go onto the internet quite often. I knew of the existence of L.R. Mignot (Louis Rémy Mignot) because he was the brother of my greatgreatgrandmother. Both she and another brother (Adolphe John) came to the Netherlands. She married A.A.M. de Block, with whom her brother established a cigarfactory in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.
Their parents were: Remi Mignot, born: june 6th1801 in Granville, Normandy. He died august 15th 1848 in Charlestown, South Carolina. Remi was married to Theonie Marie Louise de la Rivière. She was born in Philadelphia on october 2nd 1806 and died in Greenwich, Connecticut, december 13th 1875.
His parents were called Adrian Nicholas Mignot and Marie Moisson.
Her parents were called 'de la Rivière-Angot'.

Searching the internet using the full name: 'Louis Remy Mignot' offers a lot of sites concerning L.R. Mignot.

I hope this message serves you well,

yours sincerely, Oscar Struycken, Amsterdam,The Netherlands.
