Hi Rex,

I used to have Family Tree maker in an old PC but it doesn't seem to have been copied over. Too hard for me to solve at this time of year!

I had a lovely coffee with SDusie. She kindly gave me your book.

I am not sure they knew about Charles, the other son of Benjamin, and his descendents. Did you?

Why were you doing this research?
I am meeting Sue Milledge for coffee next Friday - hence my research into how our families are related. It seems that mu husband, Jim's father is a 2nd cousin of Alec. They share a great-grandfather, being Benjamin.

My husband James Andrew Milledge is descended from Benjamim Milledge and Ann Penny through their son, Charles, his son Royden and his son John who is my husband's father. Next week I am meeting up with Sue Milledge. I believe her husband Alec Milledge is also descended from Benjamin through his son George who married Letitia Dexter. What is your connection?

Here is a link to a page of the website I have started to publish my genealogy research.

This page deals with finding and listing every Milledge on every census from 1790 to 1930. I'm up to 1860 right now, but will get all the way through eventually. Hopefully this will be a good resource for many out there, and others can help me by sending me info that I may miss.

http://sites.google.com/site/genarchives/family-calendar/mil...

I have also been searching the census for the children of Levi and Abigail Milledge.
My line comes from the Elizabeth Ann Milledge HUll
She was born Aug 1, 1827 we believe in Ohio d Sept. 22, 1889 Missouri. As you found they are on the 1850 census from Lee Co.,Iowa with Levi and Abigail.
Also from civil war records of Marcus seeking financial aid.
Levi Milledge (son) in an affidavit was said to be a bbrother-in-law of Marcus. There are several of us seeking her parentage. It sure would be nice to know for sure.
Also, long ago I found through Wyoming Historical records
Abigail's father was Benjamin Smith b May 12,1754 New York
died May 29 1823 Exeter, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.
They were married Hempstead, Long Island 1783
Her mother was also Abigail born Hempstead 1750; died Exeter, July 28, 1847 at the age of 97.

Levi Milledge/Millage (Descendants should Read!)

I think all researchers that are descended through Levi and Abigail Milledge (or feel they are) need to have a discussion to straighten out all the info we have.

I'm going to work to put together all the info that I can find to sort out this Milledge family but would like some help.

I need to know ALL of the children that we think he had. I'm under the impression that he had 11 children based on the 1830 census. Who are they?

I'll post something eventually, but any questions that you have brought up yourself in looking into the Milledge family and also listing the children you believe he had would be helpful to me so I know who to look at.

* Edit* Here is some preliminary data I've put together:

1820 U.S. Census – Luzerne County, Pennsylvania – 5 members in household. Males – 1 (16 to 26), 2 (0 to 10). Females – 1 (26 to 45), 1 (to 10)

1830 U.S. Census - Falls Twp., Muskingum County, Ohio - 14 members in household. Males – 1 (40 to 50), 1 (10 to 15), 3 (5 to 10), 2 (under 5). Often times the head of the household is the oldest male or female (obviously the female if the husband had died) and as such I assumed that the oldest two counted were Levi and Abigail. It seems very likely that it was a safe assumption due to the info given by them on the 1850 census.

The 1820 census is the first census that Levi can be found as head of household. This means that in 1810 he was living with his father and I believe that to be one of the Luzerne County Milledges (Humphrey? James?). This of course means that Levi and Abigail were married sometime between 1810 and 1820, and most likely was before 1815. On this census they have 3 children (2 boys, 1 girl) that were born between 1810 and 1820. I assume that since they are under 10 that they will be living in the household on the next census…

In the 1830 census the family has moved to Muskingum Co., Ohio. In this census we see Levi and Abigail both were born between 1780 and 1790. This fits with the 1850 census where they give their ages as 60 (born about 1790). There is a female living with them that was born between 1790 and 1800. There is no way of knowing who this is, but it is most likely not a child of theirs (perhaps a sister to Levi or Abigail or maybe even just a friend of the family). In the last census there were 3 children; in this one there are 11 (assuming that they are all Levi and Abigail’s children – again, it is possible that they aren’t. In fact, maybe the adult living with them is a widow and had a child or two she already had). For this analysis we will assume all 11 belong to Levi and Abigail, meaning they had 8 children between 1820 and 1830. This fits, because as we look above and count up the children whose birth timeframes occur between 1820 and 1830 there are indeed 8.

By 1840 the family had moved to Champaign Co., Ohio. It appears that Levi and Abigail had no more children between 1830 and 1840. There are only 5 children living with them at this time, with only 1 of them over the age of 20. The two females were born between 1825 and 1830. They correspond with the two females that had the same birth timeframe in the 1830 census. The other three females in the 1830 census are no longer in the household (either they got married or moved out to work as a housekeeper in another house or died). The male side is a little different. In 1840 there is only one male born from 1825 to 1830, while in the 1830 there were two. In 1840 there is only 1 male born from 1820 to 1825, while in 1830 there were three. There was 1 male born from 1810 to 1820 in 1840, which corresponds with the 1 male born 1815 to 1820 in the 1830 census. What happened to three males that went missing between 1830 and 1840? The one with the birthdate of between 1825 and 1830 probably wouldn’t have been old enough to move out and/or marry, so it is possible he died. The two that are missing that were born from 1820 to 1825 could have possible gotten married and moved out if there were born closer to 1820.

I am going to go through the census records of all of the children that have been said to belong to Levi and Abigail to try and match them up with the children in these census records:

The possible children of Levi and Abigail Milledge:

Sidney Milledge - Birthdates given: (abt 1812, abt 1814, abt 1815, Jan 1815)
1840 U.S. Census – Rush Twp., Champaign County, Ohio – 4 members in household. Some children have a very narrow range of possible birth years due to census records, such as Sidney (1814 or 1815) and Elizabeth (1827 or 1828) however some have a very wide range such as Otis (1815, 1819, 1822, 1825, 1827). Some of these children I could only find one census record of so I only have one date to go by (If anyone has seen other records on them please let me know). Also I would like to make known that at this point it is purely from census records that I derive this information. If anyone has an obituary or any other record that gives a specific birth date to any of these possible children, please let me know.
If we go by these birth dates and try to plug in children to the census records from 1820 to 1840, this is what it looks like (children with a larger range of birth years will have the year I used shown:

In the 1820 census:
Children: 2 males (0 to 10) Birth timeframe: 1810 to 1820 (Sidney, Zeba, or Benjamin-1820)
1 female (0 to 10) Birth timeframe: 1810 to 1820 (?)

1830 Census:
Children: 1 male (10 to 15) Birth timeframe: 1815 to 1820. (Sidney or Zeba)
3 males (5 to 10) Birth timeframe: 1820 to 1825 (Benjamin-1820 and Otis – 1822 or 1825)
2 males (under 5) Birth timeframe: 1825 to 1830. (Levi)
2 females (10 to 15) Birth timeframe: 1815 to 1820. (?)
1`female (5 to 10) Birth timeframe: 1820 to 1825. (Angeline or Sarah)
2 females (under 5) Birth timeframe: 1825 to 1830. (Phoebe, Elizabeth)

1840 Census:
Children: 1 male (20 to 30) Birth timeframe: 1810 to 1820. (Zeba or Benjamin – 1820)
1 male (15 to 20) Birth timeframe: 1820 to 1825. (Otis – 1822 or 1825)
1 male (10 to 15) Birth timeframe: 1825 to 1830. (Levi)
2 females (10 to 15) Birth timeframe: 1825 to 1830. (Phoebe, Elizabeth)

Conclusion: In the 1820 Census, Sidney, Zeba, and Benjamin (if he was born in 1820) can all fit in the category of the two males aged 0 to 10. The enumeration for the census began on the first Monday of August in 1820 and continued for an entire year, so Benjamin could be the second one on this census if he was born at the right time in 1820. This also means that only either Sidney or Zeba was the second child, as they were both shown from census records to be born around 1814 or 1815 (In the 1830 Census there is only one child shown to be born between 1815 and 1820 so only one of these two can fit since we know neither one of them died before 1830). I so far have no female child that fits in the timeframe of being born between 1810 and 1820.

In the 1830 Census, as discussed above, only either Sidney or Zeba can fit as there was one male born between 1815 and 1820 in the census record. There were three males born between 1820 and 1825, and Benjamin being born in 1820 could fit this, as well as Otis if he was born in either 1822 or 1825 as indicated by a couple census records. Levi would be one of the two males that were under 5 being born in either 1825 or 1826 (as such he could also be one of the third male that was born between 1820 and 1825. This leaves two male children unaccounted for. (Could Zeba actually have a later birth year? I need more info!!!) There were two females born between 1815 and 1820 and I have no one that fits that. In the 1820 census there was only one listed as being born between 1815 and 1820. Perhaps a daughter was born in 1820 not long after the census was taken in Luzerne County? There was one female born between 1820 and 1825, and either Angeline or Sarah could fit this. There were two females born between 1825 and 1830, which both Phoebe and Elizabeth fit into.

1840: Pretty straight forward if you’ve been following along. Again, assuming Benjamin was born in 1820, he would fit as the one male born from 1810 and 1820. Using Otis being born in 1822 or 1825 gives us the one male born between 1820 and 1825. Levi fits as the one male born between 1825 and 1830. Sidney by this time had moved out and was living next to Levi and can be found in the 1840 census.

I need help sorting through this! Again, if you have any records that help shed any light on this please share here, or send me an e-mail. My first thoughts going through this is that out of the above possible children, Zeba Milledge/Millage and Sarah Ann Milledge (Moody) are the ones that do not fit well. No doubt they are perhaps related to the family in some way, but I am leaning to think that they are not children. I also don’t think that these two Milledges that I did not list above are children of Levi and Abigail:

Charles Milledge (m- Suzanna Smothers) – According to the 1850 census he was born in Pennsylvania in about 1803. He may belong to Humphrey Milledge? Perhaps he is a younger brother of Levi? Either way, I do not believe he is a child of Levi and Abigail.

Catherine Milledge (m- Jonathan Jones) – In many census records she gives her birthplace as New Jersey (Levi claimed to be born in New Jersey on the 1850 census). Also, from the census records, she was born in about 1805 or 1806, or in 1808 according to her obituary in 1892 which stated she was 84. This does not fit with the family we see in 1830, where Levi has two daughters born between 1815 and 1820.

These two are children I have seen attached to Levi and I just can’t agree with it. Again, I would love to see more documentation on all of these possibilities if it shows

This looks a lot cleaner at points in the word file I wrote it in (at least I think it does). If anyone wants me to e-mail me to them contact me. Also anyone can relay info to me they think I should see in regards to this.

jakerees@live.com

Early days yet, but I still think there may well be a connection with the Milledges you are researching.

The Milledges are said to come from the town of Milwich in Staffordshire which is in the Midlands. Milwich is a middle-English name which denotes “outlying settlement” such as where a mill might be located. “Milledge” is believed to be an updating of the name “Milwich”. Updating, that is, between 1300 and 1600. The earliest record of a ”Milledge” (a marriage record) is in 1637 in Gloucestershire..

I know that the first Milledges' came to the US in the early 1700s, I believe it was around 1703. Thomas Milledge came alone and left his wife and son in England. He had 2 sons and one of those sons was the father of John Milledge of Georgia. This is were the Milledge family split. John Milledge blood line fought for the revolution whereas the other brother fought for the Crown. As we all know the Crown lost and America was born. The loyalist had to flee to Canada whereas the other bloodline stayed in the US and eventually migrated south. The Canada Milledges changed the spelling of their name to -idge to flee from persecution. The Canada Milledges became successful boat builders but all changed with the introduction of steel. All the Milledge ships rotted and sunk in the harbor. Eventually my bloodline migrated south. My Grandfather and his cousin, while attending UGA changed our last name from -idge back to the original spelling of -edge. (In hopes to reap the benefits of our distant relative, John Milledge).

Originally all Milledges were white but it was the John Milledge line that fought for the South during the American Civil war. They owned slaves. Emancipated slaves would sometimes take the name of their "master" so that is why there are African American Milledges.

I have a couple books on the Milledges. One is untitled and the other is titled "The Millidges"

The only other pick of information that I know is that our family orginally came from a northern English village called Milwick. I don't believe this village exists anymore.

My father is currently putting together a book discussing the Milledge's first introduction to the US and the Canada Millidges (There will be only a brief chapter on the Georgia Milledges since we do not know the details of that blood line).

hi i'm in the uk. John M Milledge b 1844, married Ellen Gale of the Isle of Wight, children, Emma Mabel, b 1872, Charles W b 1873, Annie b 1874, Harriet b 1875, Benjamin John b 1878, George Henry b 1881. Benjamin joined the army very early on, and by 1907 was married and living in North St, Canterbury. Kent. They moved to Lymington, Hampshire and lived at 104 High Street, Lymington, probably owning the building and working as a grocer. The shop was taken over by the International Stores Group but there was a caveat in the sale/lease that allowed any member of the family to live on site, and Emma and Charles lived there until ww2 and then when Granny Elizabeth (ben's daughter) was bombed out of southampton in ww2, she and her family moved in with them. Thet lived there until 1961 when the International bought them out.
Ben went back into the army in ww1 and survived. He and his wife Elizabeth james seperated after ww1, and he went to live in Southampton and then later at 4 Quay hill, Lymingtton. Elizabeth his wife traded as a travelling linen seller until she was to old to work and died in Lymington work house in 1944.

What are the chances of two families with a Benjamin John and a George Henry in the same town at the same time? What info do you have on George Henry Milledge that might help us?

Hi
>>I Milledges from Lymington, Hants. Benjamin b 1878 was my great grandfather, and he was married to Elizaeth James of Southampton. He had a brother George Henry b 1881, but I know nothing about him. They were some of the children of John M. b 1844, married to Ellen Gale of the Isle of White. John was the son of Benjamin , b 1802, married to Mary also b 1802. <<<<

I guess we need to establish who your GGF's Father was.
The dates abve seem to be a generation later.
Unfortunately there is little inforamtion known here aobut the UK Milledges. It has been suggested that George was disowned by his family because of his moving to Australia.
Whereabouts in the world are you?
Do you know of any Milledges who were living in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania around the time of the first US Census in 1790? James was born about 1754, and living in Windham Township, Luzerne County, PA in 1790. It is believed that he had a son, also named James, who was born in Luzerne County PA in about 1874 and died in Delaware County, Ohio and was buried 2 Dec. 1823. Do these men sound familiar?

I am the Great grandson of William Nelson Ratfield and the Great great grandson of William Ratfield. I have been researching my ancestors and have quite abit of info on the Ratfields.
It is possible they may have lived and even married in Michigan. According to William Nelson Ratfield's Civil War record he was born in Mackinaw, MI in 1844/45. I am in progress of researching this possibility at this time.

I would like to know more about the Parkers, as Betsey (Parker) Ratfield would be my Great great grandmother.
Contact me at GBAittala@aol.com.
