I don't know much. I have been trying to find out who my great grandfather's father is. It's been a big secret that my grandfather and I are trying to solve. My great grandfather's name was also George Washington Miller. His mother was named Martha Charlottie Miller but she went by Lottie. My grandfather found some paperwork that named George W. Miller (1863-1935) as the possible father. My great grandfather was born in Washington around 1902. He changed his last name to Graves a few years later when his mother married a Graves.

I'm looking for any information on the family of Elizabeth Miller, or Elizabeth herself. Elizabeth was born around 1815 in Ohio, and married Adam Bowen April 15, 1847 in Adams County, Ohio. She died, probably in Adams County, sometime between 1860 and 1867.

I've seen many places people list Elizabeth's parents as James Miller and Rosannah Walker, but I'm wondering where this came from and what evidence there is?

I haven't been able to find Elizabeth anywhere except her marriage to Adam Bowen in 1847 and in the 1860 Census, and know she died sometime between the 1860 census and Adam's remarriage. Any other information sources would be greatly appreciated.

Harriet

Miller occurred at the family home in this city on Thursday (Dec. 23) morning at about four o'clock, following an illness of about four years duration.
Hi, I am Kevin's brother - Kevin is not spending as much time on Family Tree these days. I don't know if he replied to you or not. I would appreciate any info you would care to share. Do you have specic questions re the Miller Family?
Did Charles and Nancy have twin daughters or only one married twice? Frederick A Griffin - going back in his direct line to Samuel & Desire Crary - their son William was married to Hannah Miller (another branch of our Miller family)

Darryl.Miller@shaw.ca

Searching for a Miller

I am searching for a Clarence O'Conner Miller born 1897 in Pennsylvania. Lived for for awhile in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, his occupation was a printer. He had a son (Clarence O'Conner Miller 1918-1972)but he never married the mother of his child. There are trillions of Clarence Miller's in the research field. I only have his name because I have his son's birth certificate. Where do I go now? Any suggestions?

Re: Millers of Scotland and Ireland and Germany

Many Millers immigrated from Ireland into the Colonies in the 1700's, but the majority were Scottish HERITAGE. They were commonly known as the Scotch-Irish / Scots-Irish. This situation happened because the English Crown wanted to convert the strongly Catholic Irish away from the Catholic church [this began with Henry VIII in the 1500's and continued for centuries, leading to great animosity between England, Scotland, and Ireland]. Since Scotland was strongly Protestant Presbyterian, the Crown first coerced, then later forced the Scottish Protestants to live in Ireland hoping that their Presbyterianism would convert the Irish and lead them to break with the church of Rome [it didn't work, still hard feelings among the Irish today].

By the early 1700's these Scottish families, many of them Millers, began immigrating into the Colonies due to their own poverty, increased taxes by the Crown, etc. In the Colonies, most of the Scotch-Irish settled into communities already settled by their fellow Scotch-Irish and when they moved, they moved to another community of Scotch-Irish.

During the same general time period, the Germans and Swiss and French were undergoing a terrible famine, especially in the area known then as the Palatinate [Switzerland-Germany-France border area of today]. They too began to immigrate to the colonies for a better life. However, the Germans lived among their fellow Germans, not choosing to live amongst the Scotch-Irish, who had crude backwoods-type lifestyles compared to the Germans, who maintained well-kept pristine farms. The German surname of Mueller was often changed to Miller in the New World.

You can tell whether your Millers were of German or Scotch-Irish origin by where they first lived when they immigrated. By mid-1800's, some German and Scotch-Irish communities were becoming mixed, even some began in early 1800's. However in 1700's these communities were pretty clearly divided.

When the Revolutionary War broke out, these Scots who had lived in Ireland for centuries were fiercely loyal to the Colonists and absolutely hated the Crown because of centuries of bad experiences. These were the men who stayed with George Washington during the winter at Valley Forge where they had very little food, no shoes, weren't being paid, and ground covered in deep snow. This was how bad the Scotch-Irish hated the British Crown.

This is just a snippet of info about differentiating German Millers from Scottish Millers. There really weren't any true Irish Miller surnames, since the Millers from the British Isles mostly ORIGINATED in Scotland.

Lastly, if you know to what faith your ancestors belonged, it is a strong clue to their heritage. Germans were mostly Lutherans and isolated communities of Amish, Mennonite, Dunker/Tunker or Swiss Brethren. Scotch-Irish were initially Presbyterian, then some became Methodist, or Baptist in later generations.

The Crown required all citizens to pay taxes to the Anglican church and register the births of their children. Many did not register the births, but there are some Birth Records found today in those Episcopal churches established before the Revolution [Anglican church in the colonies became the Episcopal church after the Revolution.] This tax rule by the Crown led to the colonists including freedom of religion in the Bill of Rights and demanding separation of church and state, i.e. demanding that they not be required to pay taxes to support the Crown's established church [that being the Anglican Church].

Hello
I'm looking for any information on F W Miller. I think he was born in Germany in 1830 and immigrated to the US in 1834. He was married to Mary J (I) Miller. He lived in Texas. It appears he was living in Dewitt county Texas in 1900. I have found several census records but nothing on his parents.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Millers in Tennessee and Kentucky

Hi,
I doubt any connection to my Millers, but reading the history of the areas where they emigrated, with all the battles, the borders changed regularly, even Germany, & Switzerland, as well as Scotland & Ireland, depends on the years. When my Miller emigrated [1700s] many say we were from Germany, but one has to look at the map of that or any year to know which area they truly came from. I think it was considered Switzerland at that time. Also have a Kelly in my family that I thought Irish, seems she's from Scotland, but they went back and forth depending on the activities for the era. Do some more research on maps for the area and I think that will shed some light on your search. I know it has been a great help in my searching my genealogy.
Good luck,
Reta Miller Griffiths [originally from TN]

They are buried on what was their farm on Knob Creek, Wash., Co., Johnson City, TN. Other family members are buried there as well, some Sell family members, I've visited it and it's documented in the cemetery book and History of Washington Co., TN book. It isn't far from where I grew up, around 20 miles.
TTYL, hope all is going well,
Reta Miller Griffiths

John Allen Obenchain first married Mary F. Miller 10 Oct 1868. They had 2 children, 1869 and 1871. Mary died 11 Jan 1873 leaving John with 2 small babies. In Jun of that same year, John married Mary's sister Carless Cenith Miller. To that union they added an additional 7 children. My question is this: Does anyone know if Mary died with child? and what was the cause of death?
John Allen Obenchain and I are 2nd cousins 5X's removed. Thank you . . .
