I am trying to track down information on my maternal grandfather's family. His name was John Milli, born 12 Dec 1909 Died 20 Dec 1993. His parents were George and Elizabeth. I know Elizabeth was his second wife, but I don't know her madien name. They both came from Austria according to the 1910 US Census. I would be happy with any help anyone can provide.

Hi Alastair,

Thanks so much for that! Brilliant to hear from you.
Jeremiah was certainly a bit of a lad, I think!! He was certainly seldom short of company!
And great to know we are related! I've found quite a few branches of my tree that have left Scotland for Australia. In fact, it's beginning to look like I'm related to most of you!!
Mary also had a couple of other children from a previous marriage. Isabella and Janet Kitchen. They all are listed in the 1861 census as living with Jeremiah - Mary being his housekeeper.
I had no idea however that Benjamin and Margaret were Mary's children though, although I had figured out that Robert probably was. Fascinating!
Do you happen to know if Jeremiah was buried in Durham? If so, I'll try and find the grave, and would be happy to send you a photo of the stone, if there is one and if I can find it.
Thanks again for all the info, Alastair. During my bout of research, a couple of people stand out as being really interesting characters - none more so than Jeremiah.
Cheers for now.
PS. my email address is ken@ken-morrison.com.
Hope to hear from you.

Cheers,

ken

Hi Ken
As well as the 7 children he had with Janet MILLIE, Jeremiah also had four children with Mary THOMS. I don't think the couple were married and the relationship had obviously begun before Janet MILLIE's death in 1857. Their children were:
John Benjamin born about 1854, died 1905 in Victoria, Australia;
Margaret Williams born 7 Sep 1856;
Robert Nicol born 15 Mar 1859; and
your GGGF, Andrew born 10 May 1861.
Jeremiah remarried within 3 months of Mary THOMS' death to Agnes ROBERTSON.
Jeremiah died in 1875 in Durham, where his daughter (my GGGM), Grace, was living with her husband, Daniel BANKS.
Get in touch.
Alastair

Hi Alastair,
I recently started work on my family tree, and stumbled across your 2001 posting whilst looking for information about Jeremiah Bain, who was my great great great grandfather.
Did you ever find out any more? I have run into a bit of a blockage.
I know he was married to Janet Millie, who died in Kirkcaldy in 1857. However, in the census of 1861, there is at least one son (Robert) in the household who was born after that (in 1859), and, indeed, my GGGF, Andrew Bain was born in 1862. So I think Jeremiah may have married again, as my GGGF has Mary Bain (m.s. Thom) listed on both his marriage and death cert.
I think Jeremiah spent some time in Australia. Although I am not sure. I wonder if he was there in fact when Janet Millie died, as her death was witnessed by John Bain, who, was her eldest son, as opposed to Jeremiah himself. Maybe they had split up?
I can find no record of Jeremiah's death, nor any record of Mary Thom at all. I am wondering if he emigrated either to Australia or America and ended his days there?
Andrew, my GGGF certainly spent all of his adult life at least in Scotland.
Do you have anything at all?
Cheers,
ken.

MILLIE Surname DNA Study

I have started a MILLIE DNA project where males that carry the MILLIE surname can be tested at a group rate. (Males only because we are testing the Y-chromosome which passes from father to son) Females, who were born a MILLIE, can be involved by asking their father or brother or cousin MILLIE to join our project.
Others, who are in contact with males that carry the MILLIE surname can also be part of our project by encouraging those people to be tested.
Test results will be posted on the Surname website but your identity is protected.

If you match someone that has taken the test, before or after you, you are notified. Surname DNA studies nicely complement traditional genealogical research.

All testing is done by Family Tree DNA Company, the largest DNA testing company for genealogy purposes.
The project's website is http://www.familytreedna.com/public/millie if you would like more information about Y-DNA testing or would like to join the project.

My MILLIE ancestors, John MILLIE(1813-1896) and son Peter Bain MILLIE(1840-1923, immigrated from Fife to New York and then on to New Brunswick Canada in 1853. There were several MILLIE families in Fife at the time and I'm hoping that DNA research will help differentiate the various MILLIE families.

If you are interested please send me a e-mail. I would like to know your
family line. I can give you other details via e-mail.

Kevin E. He married Isabell Bain bn 1815 in Leslie, Fife, father Peter Bain. John had a sister Janet MILLIE, reportedly born about June 10, 1810. Nothing more known about her. Mother of John and Janet was Grace Murdoch, father John Millie, bn Kettle 1784/1789, died Milton of Balgonie 1864.

Hi, Harry Millie was my great grandfather, my fathers mothers' dad. My fathers' mothers name was Emma Millie. They were all from the British Columbia, Canada area. Harry Millie put the first telegraph line in up there and Emma his daughter was the operator. She married Joseph P. McGarrity and they moved to California, the Los Anglelas area and had one male child my father Larry Patrick McGarrity. I have no idea if these Millie's are related and I would have to search out some dates to get things more pinpointed. Harry Millie lived with the Cree Indians also and I have some old Indian artifacts that have been handed down to me. I also have many letters from Ireland dated late 1800's. I would be interested in finding out more. Melanie McGarrity Maasdam

I'm researching Robert Millie, the first owner of my house. I live in Palmers Green which is in the borough of Enfield in North London. From Kelly's Street Directory I learned that Robert lived in the house from 1909/10 until at least 1922 but was not there in 1925. Being a rare name I though it would be interesting to see if I could find out more.

There are only 3 Robert Millies listed by the 1901 Census all of whom were born within 10 miles of my house. Two were aged 22 and one was aged 56 in 1901 so it could have been any of these.

I am mainly intereseted in his occupation, whether he had family and if he served in the first war.

Dave Lee

Hi Melanie,

My reaction has nothing to do with Millie, but everything with Maasdam. As you may have seen, there is a Maasdam Board on this site and I maintain a website that deals mainly with 4 families, amoung which is the Maasdam family (my mother-in-law). Have a look at www.euronet.nl/~qim_tdm/genealogy.htm
I would be interested to know where you fit in the family tree.

Best regards,
Tom de Meijer

Thankyou for your message. Copies of any information that you have would be most helpful. I can supply some info as well. I am in contact with other Millie researchers and they would also like copies of information for the bigger picture. I can compile and send you some info or you can go to my website: http:\\www.users.bigpond.com\andrewjmillie1\home.htm. This is still a work in progress to compile together in one place all the Millie research. My particular line begins in France ca 1570 with a Claude de Milly. Some of his descendants moved to Great Britain and the name was changed to MILLIE. There are also Scottish Millie's who don't seem to have an immediate connection to the English Millies. My email address is andrewjmillie1@bigpond.com or milliegenealogy@bigpond.com. All information is shared freely with other researchers. I look forward to getting in contact with you.

I have much information to give you. My Mother sadly just passed away and was in the middle of finding the history of her family, she found many things on her MILLIE relations and connected some interesting facts together. It looked like that the family migrated to Australia and half now live in England and half in the down-under country of Australia. if there is anything else you would like to know email me asap. I would like to also see what you know about our family as I am very interested aswell.
Yours Sincerely, Berty Millie

Millie or Beale-Millie

I have lost the lineage for my Great Grandfather, Henry Thomas Beale Millie. He emigrated to Canada cir 1880 and fought in the Riel Rebellion of 1885. He died in London, Ontario, Canada, 6-11-1918. His military record lists Kilkenny Ireland as his place of birth, but I believe his parents may have been of Scottish or British origin.

Millie Surname

Hello Melanie;

My Grandfather was Harry Millie b. 5-27-1893, from London, Ontario, Canada. Although I don't presume to be of any relation at this point, Harry's father and my gr. grandfather was Henry Thomas Beale Millie b. 9-14-1862. His Canadian military papers show his birthplace to be Kilkenny, Ireland. HTB Millie fought in the 1885 Riel Rebellion of Western Canada (Saskatchewan). He is purported to have had a male child from a previous marriage, prior to marrying my gr. grandmother. There is a line of Scottish Millie's that were in Western Canada. I have been searching for Millie surnames on the net for about a year now, and Scotland and France are the big winners, with Ireland having only 1 Millie surname from the past or present. Please e-mail me at Bigdogdad@aol.com with an estimate or exact years you speak of, and anything you will share with me about your Irish snail mails.

I started a site that you may want to visit for all Millie Surname researchers at
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/jumpto.cgi?find=Millie

I look forward to hearing from you via e-mail. Many Thanks, Bob Millie.

Harry Millie

The only Harry that I have in my lineage was born Henry but was known as HARRY. Hecwas born abt 1900 in London, England. The only Emma I have in my lineage was christened 4/Mar/1834 in Shoreditch, London, England, but her father was James Millie. We still have info on MILLIE's that we haven't connected as yet. I might have his records at my Parents place. When you are looking into the MILLIE family don't just look at the one spelling of MILLIE. there are plenty of alternative spellings. In my direct line from ca 1570 we have the variations: de Milly/Milcent/Milia/Milea/Millier/Millay/Mellay and MILLIE. I acn be contacted at andrewjmillie1@bigpond.com . If I am able to find some info for you i would like to be able to contact you direct, if that's okay. I am putting together a website that will hopefully contain as much genealogical information on the MILLIE family that is known. I hope to get people to contribute their trees and i will share my tree with them.
