Re: descendants of Julius Milligan

We have been dna tested and believe we will be a match for Julius Millican. We do know that we go to a William M. Millican, born 1810 in Tennessee, and a Rebecca Claunch, born about 1815. Our line goes to Crawford Copunty, Ark. by 1850. You can find William Millican and family living next door to his sister Cecellia Stou in 1850. Goodman Stout, her husband, and Cecilla move to Collin County,
Texas by 1860. A few years later, William M. Millican and Rebecca move to Collin County, Texas. Moses and Cynthia Millican are also living in Collin County,
Texas. Do you know if anyone from these lines been tested? Do you know anything about these families? Where did they originate before Kentucky and Tennessee? Any help or leads would be appreciated.

I have been digging pretty deep into this linage, looking for the correct parents for Thomas Standley and Merissa S. Milligan. I am finding allot of "WRONG" info on Ancesty.com
I am trying to find someone who really has done their homework on this line to assist me.

William M. Milligan was the bondsmen on this marriage, I believe since Merissa was only 15 years old, that this was likely her Father, I feel that several have skipped a Generation around on this James Milligan.

Also I have made note that Cannon Co, TN was formed from part of Wilson Co, TN in 1836, so anyone born before 1836 was actually born in Wilson Co, TN.

Would appreciate some help, is there a will for James Milligan or William W Milligan?

Hi Jeannie Milligan,

I can assure you that the records you have found were not of our Families Sarah Milligan. Our Sarah lived and died in West Virginia.

Now I think if I were you I would be looking at the Milligan Family of Milligan, Florida. This small town still exists today and If I remember correctly Milligan Florida has been a town for the longest time. I'll run your Milligan names to Pat Sproat. She is a Milligan by borth but she is not from the same Milligan Family I am. She descends from the Milligan Family of South Carolina. If anyone has run across James Seaborn Milligan, it would have been Pat Sproat. I'll talk to you again after I recieve a reply from Pat. Thanks for asking.......T

Isabella Doak married John Milliken, Sep 28, 1786. She never livred in Ohio County, VA (now WV). They lived and farmed their adult life in Lincoln Co., TN. (LCT). There is absolutely no record of her living in Ohio Co., VA (WV).

They had four children, Samuel Doak, 1789-1864, Mary Polly, 1795-1887, John Milliken II, 1799-1864, and Virginia Jenny, 1802-1855.

The spelling of the surname MILLIKEN is documented on the marriage record, various family tombstones and in the documents regarding the settlement of John's estate.

Many descendents lived in LCT and a few moved to TX. None of them ever lived in Ohio County, WV. Many are buried in the Bethel or Barnes cemeteries in LCT and all their tombstones are engraved Milliken.

Samuel Doak died in the Civil War. Mary Polly married Needham Sorrells, John Milliken II married Margaret Wyatt and Virginia married Samuel Lynch.

All the children John, Samuel D., Jane and Polly purchased items from their father's estate. This was the extent of his prodogy.

A little update for Tom's original posting. The marriage "bond" for John Milliken and Isabella Doak was for 50 pounds and signed by John Milliken and Robert Torbet. It's dated the 27th day of September 1786. I secured a copy from the county clerk.

The spelling of this John's surname is correct. It's Milliken. A long line of Milliken decsendents still live in Lincoln Co., TN. Altough, after the Civil War, a few moved to Taylor Co., TX.

Some family members are buried in the Bethel Cemetery or the Barnes Cemetery. I'm still searching for Isabella's tombstone via Find A Grave.

When you examine the census and tax records Johm Milligan and Sarah Robinson always lived in Ohio Co., VA (WV) their adult lives. While John Milliken and Isabella lived in Lincoln Co., TN.

The children for these two couples are often mixed. Use the census records to keep them with the correct set of parents.

Looking for links to my Grandfather Philip's family who seemed to live in Polk Iowa. Philip was killed in WWII in 1945. He had two sisters, Mary and Katherine...and one brother, Paul. His parents were Roy (Leroy in some records) and Rose (Roseanne in some records), who I am not yet sure of her maiden name.
One of my wife's cousins, John Duran, married Estefana Jaramillo, a daughter of Antonio Jaramillo and Jesusita Milligan, John R Milligan's only daughter. If you check the 1880, 1900, 1920 and 1930 US Census you can find information on John R Milligan. The Jesusita that married Antonio Jaramillo was the second Jesusita born to John Milligan and Rosita. I can't find any descendants for John Duran and Estefana, but I can trace John Duran back to Spain on several branches, the most recent being Cristobal Maria Cordova, Teniente de Presidio El Carrizal near El Paso. Cristobal came to Mexico from Spain around 1775. Many of the Cordovas in Southern New Mexico are descended from Cristobal and his wife Maria Feliciana Josefa Orcasitas Telles-Jiron.

I can provide a GEDCOM for John Duran it you manage to find his descendants.

Regards, Dave Nelson, Folsom, CA.

I have some information concerning William B. Milligan. I am the grand-daughter of William Brown Milligan, who married Lora Jane Myers, who hailed from Green County Missouri. On Jan 8 1925, daughter Willola Letha Milligan was born to Lora and William in Houston. I have the birth certificate. I can see how Willola Letha turned into "Wilhemina?". In her youth, folks called my Mom, Willie. I believe Letha was named after William and William's sister Letha. William died (1927) when Mom was 2 years old. I know Rece Jesse witnessed his brother's death certificate. Letha married Charles C. Dinkel in 1947. She passed away in 1989 in New Jersey. Hoping to hear from you. All the best to you cousin,
Barbara
Hi Amanda,
It was Bryce Milligan who found the Sheriff's sale documents in Lincoln County Tennessee for John Milliken and Isabella Doak which indicate that Isabella Doak never married John MilliGAN of County Down Ireland. Your information about her maybe correct but the dates sound a bit advanced in time for a 2nd marriage. I beleive she passed away prior to her husband. I do have copies of the Lincoln County Tenn. Sheriff's sale of John Milliken's estate if you would like to have them. My e-mail address is milligan_tom@yahoo dot com. What is interesting about these documents is that one of John Milliken and Isabella doaks daughters was at the estate sale of her father's and made purchases. This daughter is NOT one of John Milligan of County Down, Ireland's daughters.....The Milliken's from Scotland I believe and Milligan's of County Down Ireland were two seperate and different families.

Yes, I know - I have that info, but it doesn't give details such as where in Ireland he was born. Also, I believe the name "Hapnick" was spelled phonetically by Mary (his widow) because I find no mention of that surname anywhere in the British Isles. Any idea on what surname it could have really been? Also, I haven't found any Martin Milligan with a son named Martin anywhere. It doesn't help that Martin himself spelled his surname Melligen but after his death, Mary & the rest of the family spelled it Milligan.
Are you related to this branch of the Milligans?

My Great-Grandfather, Martin Milligan (spelled his surname several different ways), listed on American censuses as having been born in Ireland, family oral history gives him Scottish ties, born around 1855, emigrated around 1870 (again, according to censuses), married Mary Cleary (born in Co. Mayo, Ireland) in Chicago, IL on April 12, 1874. Had 6 children, died in Chicago in 1910. I need to know his birthplace &, hopefully, learn the ship he took to America.
