Perintha Mills, Elias L. Langworthy/Kellogg connection

I am trying to identify a "Perintha Mills" who wrote a letter to ELIAS L. and MARTHA LANGWORTHY (MARTHA MILLS)dated September 1834 and sent from Lexington (Conneatte?) PA to Mr. Langworthy in Bridgewater NY. One page of the letter is addressed to LOUISA M. KELLOGG (shortly after married to CHRISTOPHER LANGWORTHY), to whom she refers as a friend. Miss Mills refers to herself as a spinster and mentions closing "her" school, so perhaps she was a teacher. She mentions several names (first names only) in the manner of someone providing updates of family news, and it sounds like she is referring to several families. The names: Benj., Betsey, Jessie, Lucretia, Augustus. She refers to farming.

I'd love to be able to identify who she was.

Thank you.

Re: Mills Family Genealogy Book

Did any one get any thing out of this "MILLS Family Genealogy Book" from this party?
What was/is the name of the "Book"?
Who wrote it? When?

We now know that there are several different lines of MILLS that came to the New World,

Early and Late.

Some were NOT REALLY MILLS by birth, and variation of spelling of the surname too. MILLS, MILLES, MYLLES, MYLES, MILES, MAILES, etc.

Some adopted the surname MILLS, for various and sundry reasons.

DNA testing still has several of them listed under the MILLS DNA Project, on the one web site.
www.familytreedna.com under MILLS.
Go to DNA results page.
Can click on various haplo Groups.
then can click on ancestor names, takes to lineage chart.

Several are listed as of "The George MILLS of Jamaica, L I NY" but they are NOT

related, at least by DNA testing.

One group is on the haplo group I

and the other

group is on the haplo group "R".

Since the one DNA Kit #7287 seems to track his ancestor MILLS line, back to a Samuel MILLS - Frances PEMBROOK/PIMBROOK of Dedham, MA.

One would then, maybe should or could, take a FRESH look at their research to see where it

went down the wrong the branch of the MILLS tree.

Can understand the Why of it easily.

Several of these MILLS lines, through allied and related DNA surnames, also married and could have caused the problem.

Examples of DNA matching surnames:
ASHLEY - BINNS/BYNNES - BRANDT - BUCKLEY - BROWN - FARR - GLOVER - HAYES/HAYS - HILTON - HOLDER - OVERSTREET - PARR - PERRY -PIDCOCK - TERRY - RATHBUN/BONE - SLATON/EN/AN/SLATTON/SLAYTON -
EDGEFIELD - EDENFIELD - LIMEHOUSE - LIGHTBOWN - GRAY - HARRIS - JOHNSON** - PURVIS - HOWARD - and too other MILLS.

Meaning too, that they share a Common Ancestor.

** Also a couple different lines of JOHNSON also criss crossed these surnames.

If do a DNA test, can also post your results to another web site, that does genetic comparison, www.ysearch.org.

Some of the above surnames were found on that site, as they apply to my MILLS descendant.

Patricia
cw

Now that WOULD be an interesting DNA test for sure.

But too, would be most expensive to ask a DNA lab to try to get a sampling from there.

But Very interesting, for real.

I put both spellings, as on other gene sites, other researchers have listed Hannah's surname that way.

Again, I do not have access any more to getting to a library and doing physical research.

The mind is willing, but the body is just NOT cooperating any more.

Will keep checking back.

Patricia
cw
May be your line might be related to our little group of 7 so far that match, pretty much.

I have no idea by what you mean about E-mailing you an address to find out about Pieter Van der Muellen. Either go to Ancestry.com or type his name into your search engine & see what you get. I cannot type you 20 pages of info thru my e-mail. You need to go to Ancestry, type in his name, and look for Ide -Corbin Tree by lovejoylulu. I have complete genealogy in Ide-corbin tree, which you can print page by page, or put into your Ancestry Tree. He is also my _X Grt. Grandfather.
On Ancestry.com. I also bought a reprint of the Peter Mills book for about $151.00 from Higginsons Books. I sent it to genealogist in AZ. to get my Colonial Dames & mayflower Society Apps ready for me, so I don't have it right now. If you ttype in Ancestry--Peter Woutourse Van Der muellen, and see it in Ide tree by lovejoy lulu, that is my tree, with all correct lineage back to Wm. Bradford of mayflower. Your spelling is differnt than in book, so try under Almira Mills of Hamburg, NY in 1800s & go back from her. Hello Distant cousin-he is my X Grt. Grandfather, too!
Patricia,

I'm aware of only one living male Mills from my wife's line. He lives in upstate NY and hasn't answered several requests I've made through Ancestry.

My wife's earliest traceable Mills is John Mills of Hadley, MA, with his wife, Hannah Buckman. They are covered in the 1988 "A Bucknam - Buckman Genealogy" by Ann Theobold Chaplin, on page 223. He is descended from John Buckman of Boston.

I have several mid 1800s letters with postage stamps from John's children. Perhaps there might be recoverable DNA on them

Bill Allen
Lyndhurst, OH
Don't know if this helps or not, but John Mills who married Mary Polly Neely had my g-g-grandfather, George M Mills. 17John's father was William Mills who married Sophia Penn Banks. Her parents were Linn Banks b. 1739 Stafford, Orange Virginia, d. Dec 27,1799 Lancaster, Garrard, Ky. and Sarah Proctor b. 1740, Fauquier, Vir,d. Feb 16, 1827, Lancaster, Garrard, Ky. Garrard Co, east of Mercer Co was formed from Lincoln, Madison and Mercer Counties which were formed from the original Virginia. This land which became Kentucky was the hunting grounds for southern Cherokee tribes. Not settled by whites until 1775 when Daniel Boone obtained agreement for it. Therefore, if your people come from John Mills like I suspect, he most likely is Cherokee descent. See if any of the sibling groups from your person connects to any Mills on the Dawes rolls. Still, even if they are not, that doesn't mean they weren't Cherokee. It was well known that my g-grandmother was though she lived in Crawford County Missouri after the family round about migrated there.

My family is

William Mills He was born in NJ then served in the ohio Militia then ended up in WV
George Mills It looks like he was born in Belmont Ohio but I can not find any records of it
Andrew Jackson Mill He was born in West Virginia and died in Washington State in 1955
Herman Mills

Many people have attached this family to another Mills family but it is not a correct connection unfortunately they have many of the same family names and have lived in the same places but the birth dates don't match and based on the Mills DNA project we are not a direct descendant of that family

Once Told in a seminar I attended. If the census taker did NOT feel like walking up the country lane to the farm house, he would just visit with the next door neighbor. Thus a few descrepancies in the detail. And a few missing family members from one census to the next. Again, have to take all with a "grain of salt".
Church, Birth, Death, bible records, marriage records, tax, land, wills, deeds, pension files, would be the best CONCRETE documentation.
And Correct, mostly likely, the similar names, in adjacent entries on census records, would lend one toward finding related and allied family.
Patricia
cw

When all else fails, and curiosity gets the best of us, DNA testing, does help a bunch. But also opens up a whole 'nother can of worms. : )

Hi Pat. You are correct about confusion. Then, you recall my situation I think, where my Amos is shown as "not a Mills" because of my DNA but Charles H and 15574 England are listed as a Mills but there is only one in 38 & 12 (respectively) DNA markers that differ and we are all Haplogroup R.
Pat, do you go to Y-search and review that often?

Hi Duane.
not sure if I recall asking you if you might consider doing a DNA test.

See if you in fact match to my MILLS descendant and or to that other line of MILLS??

now tested and shows they do NOT match and are still saying they are of the George of Jamaica, LI NY as well.

two different haplo groups.

the markers do not match.

DNA does NOT LIE.

Keep me posted.

If I have asked and you have answered previously, please excuse.

Losing hard drives, right and left, and unable to retrieve from my back ups.

Does make me crazy some times. Drives me up the wall.

have to go and try to re create not only from files missing, withdrawn from various sites, and too.
from my 'getting old" memory.

Patricia
cw
So far:
My MILLS match pretty much to these descendant lines.
1. John MILLS - Rebecca SMITH- Ontario, Canada.
2. Abraham/Abram MILLS - Elizabeth LOUKS - Charlotteville, ON CAN.
3. Lewis MILLS - Emaline HAMILTON - New Jersey USA.
4. William MILLS, - Amy, William W MILLS, his son Dennis C MILLS, NJ and OH.
5. Samuel MILLS - D: 1822 Jefferson KY.
6. James MILLS - the two GUSTIN Ladies, Warren Co OH.
7. My MILLS descendant, as George of Jamaica, LI NY

Per the book by Helen S ULLMANN, seems to link my MILLS to her book on Herbert LEE MILLS and Bessie DELANO KENDALL.

the 7th kit presently still under "ungrouped" on the MILLS chart - ALL.

Will be moved shortly to the detail page on the MILLS DNA project, administratated by Charlene TINDALL.

Patricia
cw
Skip and Loren.

Yes, DNA testing has been done on several branches of this over all MILLS family.

However, the two lines DO NOT MATCH, to each other.
At least on the MILLS DNA Project web site, www.familytreedna.com under MILLS.

One group if I recall correctly is listed of the George same Jamaica, LI NY.
But they are of the haplo Group "R".

The other line, mine, seem to be of the George, same place, but we are Haplo Group "I".

The markers are way off each other.

So am too, still after all these years, SEARCHING desperately for some CONCRETE Documenation that shows which George is which and or

who truly is the father of the George of Jamaica, to help us all out.

Am trying my best, daily, hourly, minute by minute, to try to find an England based MILLS family that will do DNA testing.

That definitely should tell us which direction to proceed from there.

So far, on the one haplo group "I", there are now 7 Kits that match, pretty much to each other.

on the other haplo group 'R", again I think it is, they all match each other as well.

But not the two groups together.

So far on my MILLS descendant, on this web site, Ancestry under the DNA section. he seems to share with over 70 other male various surnamed parties, in that they share a Common Ancestor.

Am attempting to try to find how all these surnames came together.

A few more or less, share the HORTON - EDDY - ASHLEY - BUCKLEY - GLOVER - HARRIS - TERRY - PERRY - HOLDER - surnames.

But nothing directly links my MILLS ancstors to theirs.

There is another MILLS - BROOKS family that are also relaed to some of these surnames in the area of Belmont Co OH and Wood Co WVA. With links to FLYNN/FLINN - BOSO - CROSS, etc, via marriages, and in turn, the FLINN/FLYNN does seem to marry to my MILLS.

At least, by what every one has shared/posted "out there".

But nothing direct.

Pat
cw

Lorin, Around Zachariah Mills (1644 - 1696)
Son of George,Zachariah MILLS (1676 - 1755)Son of Zachariah
and Amos Mills (1723 - 1823)Son of Zachariah is where the divergence seems to be. That is ignoring the other George Mills at a little older date, on Long Island, that supposedly had children of the same names. See my post of 3/18/16, 1:19AM and Pat's of 3/17/06, 8:38PM for other information.
I have worked on our family for 58 years, following the work of my father and aunt. Pat has spent many years traceing her Mills line.
Think Pat will agree, anything you are not absolutely sure of, get documentation. There is a lot of false information on the web sites.
The Mills residences, dates and occupations do not gell between the Eastern Orange and Westchester groups. The Mills' of the Mid Orange Co. area, with some of the same given names, are reasonably proven to be decended from one of the Long Island Georges but are unrelated to the Eastern family, which appears to be mine. DNA will probably help in the future in sorting this out. If you have any male in the direct line please urge him to submit for testing.
I have other information I could send you if you want. Would be simpler to go direct, rather than through Ancestry.

Hello... and thank you for writing back so quickly! I've only just started tracing my family tree in the last month or so and am building the actual tree while trying to prove and disprove things I'm uncertain of. Here is a copy of the page that pops up when I want to see the relationship between myself and George Mills:

George Mills (1595 - )
is your 10th great grandfather

Zachariah Mills (1644 - 1696)
Son of George

Zachariah MILLS (1676 - 1755)
Son of Zachariah

Amos Mills (1723 - 1823)
Son of Zachariah

Zephaniah Mills (1744 - )
Son of Amos

Sarah Mills (1775 - 1844)
Daughter of Zephaniah

Mary Miller (1805 - 1864)
Daughter of Sarah

Mary Adelia Zarr (1829 - 1878)
Daughter of Mary

Mary Elizabeth Banks (1859 - 1951)
Daughter of Mary Adelia

Althea Elizabeth Horton (1896 - 1983)
Daughter of Mary Elizabeth

Clyde R Widrig (1922 - )
Son of Althea Elizabeth

Clyde Robert Widrig II (1944 - )
Son of Clyde R

Lorin Darleen Manderly
You are the daughter of Clyde Robert

As I said, I'm just now building the tree, so as far as "proof" of anything here, I'm certain of everything from myself back to Mary Elizabeth Banks (my great great grandma). After that, I'm just going off of what I've read from others. If you have other knowledge, please let me know! Are we cousins?

Thank you again,

Lorin

Lorin, what you have is the mostly accepted liniage although some dispute portions of it. This group appears on Long Island and in Westchester County, NY. IF- someone could find a verifyable link to Amos Mills (b. 1733 to 1737)and long time resident of Orange County, NY I would be in business.
Thus far the only weak links are a 2nd daughter Abigail (b-abt 1773) Sons Zachariah Sr. (Abt 1763-65),Zebadiah (Abt 1768-69)who died young and unmarried and Amos Jr. (3/7/1779-6/1/1799.
I have records of spouses for other than Zebadiah.
Zebadiah shows up in varifiable records, thus far, only in this Orange Co. and Westchester Co. but as two seperate people. The usual name patterns of the time would indicate a connection.
I detect no link with any of the families you posted. Are you a Mills and are you sure not of the Dutch branch?
Skip Mills

I can see its been a while since anyone has written on this thread, but I thought I'd try and see if you all are keeping up. This is the info I have for my tree and I have no idea if its all or partly true or not at all. If any of you can confirm or disagree with my info I would appreciate it!

George Mills (b. 1595)
had

Zachariah Mills (1644-1696) who married: Abigail Messenger (1640-1696)

they had

Zachariah Mills, Jr. (1676-1755) who married: Martha Miller (1697-1723)

they had

Amos Mills (1723 year mother died-1823) who married: Abigail Clark (1716-1748)

Zephaniah Mills (1744) who married: Sarah Hait (1736-1780)

they had

Sarah Mills (1775-1844) who married: Jonathan Miller (1773-1832)

I have all of these people living in Jamaica Queens and Westchester, New York.
That is interesting. I looked up the census and a few entries below the Miles are the Merchants, which would be their daughter and her family. The daughter is listed as 77, but it should be 27. This is probably a silly question, but I am a beginner. I assume the census was taken and listed as the census taker going from town to town, they would have lived near each other?

Totally lost now. :-)

Nancy

I am looking for the mother and sister of my step-uncle Hollis. His father (my grandfather) is Floyd Bezzel Mills, son of William J. Mills and Winnie Almira (Manning) Mills. All of southern Missouri. The 1920 census lists my grandfather as a widower back living with his parents with is his 2 1/2 year old son Hollis. We know that the mother died while grandpa was away in Kansas havesting fields. We know there is also a daughter/sister that passed away before 1920 as well. We do not have their names. Hollis passed away with no childen. His wife's name was Elizabeth and she hated the name Hollis and so always called him Carl.

After my grandfathers' first wife and daughter passed away he married my grandmother; Mary Ellen Spoon, in 1923. She is from Elijah Missouri.

If anyone knows the names of this mother and daughter it would be greatly appreciated.

I am researching Jane C Mills, b 1823 in Kentucky and John Mills, b 1798 in NC. I am wondering if there is any native American in this family. Jane would have been my grt grt grt grandmother and we are trying to determine where the Native American comes into play. I am still learning so much, but would love to get info on this family. I don't have info on John's parents, his wife was Margaret Pelly.

Thanks.

Elam Mills, b. 1834 in Indiana - Mills Family from Tennessee

I am looking for information about Elam Mills, born in 1834 in Indiana and died in 1900 in Missouri. He served in the Civil War and was married to Mary Elizabeth Mongold. They had 7-8 daughters. His granddaughter believed he was a Pottawatomie Indian, but she was unable to get listed on the rolls.

His parents were possibly named Hugh and Susan. I know for certain his mother and father were both born in Tennessee.

Does anyone have any information on a Mills family who moved from Tennessee to Indiana sometime after 1814ish and before 1834?

Ted - Did you ever come across any information on the Ted MILLS - Ms PATTERSON, parents to Alley MILLS who married Orson BEAN.
Alley is an actress, has a FACEBOOK page, but no avenue to post anything on there. Says info from www.wikepedia.com sort of biography listed for her, on their site.

Am curious if her MILLS line, might be related in some way to the William MILLS, once some one wrote me about.
I think he turned out to be part and parcel of the Samuel MILLS D: 1822 Jefferson Co KY, line. (Had Chicago, Illinois references.)
Now found to be DNA related to my MILLS descendant, pretty much markers match.

Again, just curious. Nothing seems to be posted/shared about Ted and Ms PATTERSON KERR MILLS.
