The Millwood family in Union County, SC

My Great-Grandmother Melvina Millwood Childres (some census records spell it Melviny) lived in Lockhart,Union County, SC from about 1930 until her death in 1962. Prior to that, I am hitting a brick wall. I suspect she lived in either York Co. or Chester Co. SC from my childhood memories.

Hi John, your given email address appears to be incorrect. I do not know much of the Millwood family, only as associated with Lisle Rd (Nabowla), but I do know that Margaret Myra McCarthy was born in 1881 to Cornelius McCarthy & Jane Bird, who were married in 1879. She died in Launceston on 8 May 1913. James senior, father of James, was born in London in 1847 and arrived in Tas. in 1857. I can elaborate on some of these details...try your email address again. Cheers...Chris

my name is Bob Millwood and I don't know if this will help but in Belzoni, Ms I think I saw a tombstone a long time ago for a Jesse Millwood. Now for some of my history my grandfather was Named Robert Millwood as well and he married a Harris woman. My father was Eugene Millwood sr and he married a winstead. If this helps let me know although I might be wrong about the tomstone because I was only ten years old but if I was you I would check Belzoni. The whole place is like a Millwood community up there.

I would like some more info on the Tasmanian Millwoods, in particular the family of James, born on 7-11-1874 in Lton. When & where did he die? Birth info on his spouse, Margaret McCarthy (born 1881). According to her death notice, she left 6 children; I have James, Cornelius, Alfred & Helen (with their birth dates & deaths (not Helen's death), and some spouses. Can you fill in the spaces? (I come from that area of Tasmania and wish to enlarge my knowledge of the early residents.)Thanks...Chris.

It is probably some time since you posted your query, but if my information is correct, we have two different generations of James Millwood's. Same family though.
Our James born Fulham July 1847 married Ellen Sarah Pearton. He was son of Edward Millwood and Sarah Pickett, had a sister Hannah and brothers Thomas and Edward.
Edward was one of a ten including James born abt March 25 1815. He is listed as married to Sally Hollingsworth and has a daughter Samantha Frances Millwood. I hope you can do something with this...

info received....
Christened Wesleyan Chapel Waterloo St Hammersmith 23 Apl 1815
This James and his wife migrated to Alabama
A ggggranddaughter Patrica L Edwards was trying to trace them 2004.
edwards_tricia@hotmail.com

I am researching the Millwood family of the Community of Sawyer, Signal Mountain, Hamilton County, TN. I have found that there are two or three families I have come up with, one I can not document or even prove they existed , the other I have located in the 1870 Census for Hamilton County, TN.

1. I can not find any proof or documentation that Hosea and Susan Millwood even existed anywhere. Hosea and Susan Millwood, both born around 1827, in South Carolina, moved to Alabama and then to Tennessee. Possible Children: James; Isaac; Green; Jesse; and maybe others. Source: Local Book

2. 1870 Hamilton County Tennessee Census, Hampton and Sarah J. Millwood, both born around 1824, North Carolina, some of their children were born in Alabama, then after 1861, the last three children were born in Tennessee. Hampton and Sarah J. Millwood’s children: Isaac C.; James R.; Trecy A.; William H.; Jessee H.; Sarah J.; and Martha J.

1870 Hamilton County Tennessee Census, 17th day of June, Page: 515, District: 2nd
50 50 Millwood Hampton 46 M W Farmer 400 NC
Sarah J. 46 F W Keeping House NC
Isaac C. 16 M W Labors on Farm TN
James R. 11 M W At Home AL
Trecy A. 9 F W At Home AL
William H. 7 M W At Home AL
Jessee H. 4 M W At Home TN
Sarah J. 3 F W At Home TN
Martha J. 5/12 F W At Home

3. Because your Amanda married and there are records of her family, I have eliminated her as a candidate. Thanks for writing though.

Recently I've renewed my Millwood research. I'm compiling everything I can about all the Millwoods of SC and GA. I'm responding to the information about Andrew Jackson Millwood. When you say his father was William Sprouse, are you saying that he was illegitimate?

I have discovered that Simpson Millwood's wife, Sarah was a Sprouse (sometimes and often spelt Sprouce at that time.

James Millwood, father of Jackson, Tilman, Jefferson, James, Jane, and Nancy, married Milly Fowler, dau. of Ephraim Fowler. I saw a deed this week in which James and Milly were selling land they had inherited from her father's estate, and they referred to Ephraim Fowler by name in the deed.

Hugh Millwood can't be the son of James and Milly. Simpson could be, but only barely, so I don't think he is. However, James, Hugh, and Simpson all named a son James. Simpson and Hugh's first sons are named James. Jefferson Millwood named his first son James.

Based on these facts, I think that James Millwood who married Milly Fowler's father was named James too. I also think that Simpson and Hugh were James, Jr.'s brothers, unless there are lost Millwoods in SC.

Simpson Millwood went from Union County and Spartanburg County, SC, to Forest City, Rutherford County, NC, and some of his family remained there and others in Union Co., SC. I've been able to build most of his family for three generations through census and vital records.

I'd love to share what I have and to continue this conversation about the Millwoods in South Carolina and Georgia in particular.

I am still trying to figure out who Amanda Millwood, b. ca 1849, Union County, SC, belonged to.

Dick Norwood

mtDNA Haplogroup T2 for (Murilla) Millwood Maternal Line

Hi all,

Thanks to Judy my connection with the Millwoods made a large jump from my g'grandmother Rosa Ann Millwood (married to Thomas A Martin).

I have had my mtDNA tested and have found that I'm a Haplogroup T2. What does this mean?

Well, if you're a female descended directly and strictly from the MATERNAL line of any of these women, Rosa Ann Millwood, Sally Millwood, Nicey Millwood, Fanny Millwood, Murilla Millwood and her mother, etc.. then you too are Haplogroup T2.

Additionally if you're a female offspring of any female offspring from this line, you too are T2.

For a Male to have mtDNA (Millwood-wise)they must be the 1st male from the direct female line. Otherwise the mtDNA is lost from any mail millwoods, etc.

I just wanted to shout a Hello Cousins!!!

Cheers
George

Hi Sandra,

My great-grandfather is James Hershel Millwood. His father was Thomas H. Millwood, who was the son of Andrew Jackson Millwood. I live in Canada but was visiting my family in Georgia a few weeks ago and went to the cemetery where A.J. Millwood is buried. I have photos of his grave. If you would like a copy I would be happy to email you a copy. You can let me know by personal email if you want. (lynno62@yahoo.com). I also made photos of all of the Millwood folks buried there at Bethel Baptist Cemetery in Forsyth Co., Georgia. Maybe I have one of William G's grave too? I'll check later and see. Take care.

Lynn (Simpson) Lees

I am still trying to identify the parents and ancestors of Amanda Millwood who had several children with James Lemuel (Tink) Harris in Union County, SC, right after the Civil War. He was married to Nancy Gallman and was the son of Samuel P. and Sophia Harris of Pinckneyville/Adamsburg. She was born either in 1845 or 1849. By 1890, she is named with the name Bradley in a land deed, but after that date I haven't been able to find her. I'd be grateful for any help!

Searching through the archives, it appears that I am descended from James Asberry Millwood who I believe was the brother of Andrew Jackson Millwood.
James Asberry(Asbury) is listed as the son of Jessee Madison and Martha McGee. Any info from anyone is appreciated.

Millwoods from GA and Underwoods from NC & GA

I am just starting to research my husband's grandmother's family line. Her parents were Nellie Delilah Millwood who married Starling Jesse Underwood. HER parents were William Thomas Millwood and Gillie Caldonia ?, HIS parents were Emma Jane Fain and Sherman Under wood (I think this is William S Underwood whose parents were Thomas J Underwood and Selah Ann Dover). Any information on these people would be welcomed. My email is taylor4741@ charter.net. Thanks Cindy Taylor
