Holk Milner/ James A. Milner

I'm looking for any information on Holk Milner. I've found a marriage record but that's it (married in 1867 to Polley Rogers). The marriage information states his name as Holk Millender. I know the rest of his family lived in Haywood County, NC. I've heard he was a doctor but not sure. His son is James A. Milner(1877-1930). Burial site, birth date, death date, any information would be greatly appreciated (I've hit a wall with him!)!! Thank you!

George Washington Milner's father

George Washington Milner who married Ruth Ann Baker was my g-g-grandfather. They came to Texas in the 1850s. According to the Milner family Bible George's father was Joshua Milner who died 1844 Alabama. He married ____(scratched out)Milner (nee Wolf). According to deeds Joshua and Elizabeth (Wolff) Milner received slaves from Isabella Saxon who was also a Wolff. This seems to prove the Wolf line. I have no proof of Joshua other than the family Bible. Richard who married Martha stated in his will that Joshua and James were to take care of his estate proceedings. Is this the same Joshua?? John H. Milner who married Eunice Calloway had Willis Joshua who married Elizabeth Turner but there doesn't seem to be a George Washington in the family. I have charted all these families to try and make something fit together but haven't yet. Have also wondered if John M. who married Patience Bridger and John who married Elizabeth She(a)rman are the same. All seemed to end up in Kentucky and Alabama and then several came on to Texas.(Smart people) If you can shed some light on this I would really appreciate it. I have looked for about 12 years now for Joshua.

Hi Ron! My name is Peggy (Milner) Smith. My G-Grandfather was Thomas Franklin Milner, son of George Washington Milner, son of Joshua Milner who died in Alabama in 1844 in Alabama. Past that I have tried to put something definitive together to no avail for many years now. All the above info was from family Bible pages in the family. Joshua Milner (in the Bible) married ____ Milner (nee Wolf)) Old deed records show this to be Elizabeth Wolff. Supposedly Joshua's father was Richard Milner who married Martha Unknown but haven't found any proof other than Richard's will states sons Joshua and James as executors. There were a few Joshuas but was a Willis Joshua but doesn't seem to have a son by the name of George Washington who married Ruth Ann Baker who came to Texas. If Richard is correct then that goes back to John and Margaret and so forth. The other question is the two Johns who seem to spring from Thomas and Mary (?) Milner. There is John who married Elizabeth She(a)rman and John M. who married Patience Bridger. I have even resorted to charting all these illustrious Milners so that something might give me the Aha moment. If anyone can shed some light on this I would certainly appreciate it. I would love to see what Ron has on the Seldons as I have had that piece of the puzzle sitting out there also. Records seem to say that Mary married Thomas Milner III.

My brick wall is my g-grandfather, Hugh Milner, b. 1808 KY d. 1889, Bates Co. MO. In the 1880 census for Newtown, Scott Co., Kentucky, his birthplace is given as Kentucky with both parents b. Virginia. His daughter, Frances Ann was b 18 Apr 1842, in Indiana or Kentucky. The family had no record of his wife's name, but she died at or shortly after Frances' birth, and Hugh never remarried. Sources: an 1841 Marriage Bond in Harrison Co. KY for Hugh Milner and Eliza Lanter; Frances Ann Milner, age 17 appears with the family of James and Sarah Sherley in the 1860 Harrison Co. KY census; Frances Ann Milner m. J. Wesley Warnock on 30 Nov. 1860 in Connersville, Harrison Co., KY; she died 25 Jan 1911 in Bates Co., MO; (and the 1880 MO census previously cited).
If any of you who are descended from Col. Thomas Milner of VA know of anything that might conect Hugh to his family - perhaps a son or grandson who moved to KY - the information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Virginia

Hello, I'm a direct descendent of LT Col Thomas Milner, as far as my family history has been understood, his wife's name was Brigg, Mary Brigg of England. If this helps, I cannot confirm the source as it was researched by someone else in my family years ago, and they still live in Fairfax VA so it is easier for them to look it up. Feel free to e-mail me back at simione83@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

I have some info on Pitt Milner. A Pitt Milner was born to John and Elizabeth Milner of Wilkes,Oglethorpe and Washington Counties in Ga. He was 2nd son, born 6/22/1769 and d 7/21/1839, m. 1839 Apsylla Holmes. Also a Pitt Sanders Milner, 2nd son of John Milner III and Eunice Calloway Milner, was married to Pamelia Parker and had a son, John Ashley Milner (early 1800s). John Ashley was b 10/8/1833, died 1909 and was married to Sally Cooper in 1861. Their 3rd child was Pitt Sanders Milner, Jr., b 3/6/1866, d 10/18/1935, m 9/7/1892 Lilly Bell Smith. This info comes from Pitt, Jr's autobiography which he wrote in 1931 and which is in my family. We are from one of his brothers, George Marvin Milner. The Milner's of Birmingham were engineers that laid out Birmingham as it developed, you can find them in Al history books. George Marvin was a well respected doctor in Birmingham. I knew there was a link to Georgiana. I'll look through papers we have for the names you mentioned. Don't know of Charles Cecil or Albert E. or Lillian Camille. Don't know of Thigpens but are connections to Calloways. Hope this helps.

Re: Milner surname has many spelling variations

I agree there are spelling variations, my own family is an example. My grt grandfather was convicted in Wiltshire, England in 1827 and transported to New South Wales, Australia in 1829. His convict records have the surname MILLINER. When my grandfather's birth was registered in 1883 (yes grt g/father was a virile old guy) the father's surname is spelt MILLNER and mother's surname is spelt MILNER, and this appears on the one document. This was done by the clerk doing the registration because grt G/mother only ever made her mark. An "X". So we have 3 variations in the one family. I have also seen a reference to "the semi-literate parish clerks" of the 17th to 19th centuries. There is an 1806 baptism registration in Wiltshire which is spelt MILLENER. About the right time for grt g/father but I cant pin it yet.

my great grandfather and 3 siblings in mid August 1873, based at an address in Islington applied for, and published in the Times under "Resumption of Family Name" (I have a copy but would have to dig it out!) referring to the baptism of their grandfather George in Nunburnholme in Oct 1777. They waited till John, their father had died (25 Dec 1871) before doing the change. Only 4 of 7 children did this - 3 did not: the eldest James was in a mental hospital where he died in 1880/2, a daughter Margaret Sybla (Sybbie) and William were already married. I am currently working with my 3rd cousin Nicky who is a descendant of William Miller. The 4 who changed in their generation only thereafter were called Miller-Millner. This is also quoted in a Phillimore book.
Do you have any more info on Sybla? For 150 years(yes really!) we were sent on a wild goose chase believing her surname to be Mills from Bristol. It is only in the last 2/3 years we have discovered she was at least the 2nd wife, poss 3rd, of George. I have a photo of Geo in old age, and quotes from him and a lot of letters written by his son John and others in the family from 1860 on.
What is your descent from George? Is it via William 1817 or William, son of John, in which case you are closer to Nicky?
My email is jeangrahame - at - live.fr if you wish to reply more directly. I can add much more but have to go out now!

Jean

Hi
I realise that your post is a couple of years old but I have just encountered it. I am intrigued and congratulate you on the research you have done.
In researching my ancestry, I've established that the GEORGE MILLER (Oct1777) is my GGG Gfather and my direct line comes from his marriage to SYBLA MURRAY.
I was curious as to why his father was named MILLNER and was interested in your note regarding changing his name by Deed poll. I would be grateful to know the background and source of that information.
Regrettably, I am unable to provide any information on the Ancestry during that period, but have full information regarding the offspring carrying the MILLER name up to the present day.
I would love to hear from you as there appears to be a definite link in both our ancestries.

Cheers

Ray Miller

Mary Pearl Milner - 1905-2003

Is Mary Pearl Milner b.1905,TX d.2003,TX the daughter of Duncan Dewitt Turner b.1854, AR and Sara Ann Evans b.1868, TX.

Her husband was Ernest Raymond Milner b.1901 and died 1969, TX.

I'm speculating that she was the daughter of Duncan Dewitt Turner and Sara Ann Evans based on:

1. Location of her grave in the Bear Creek Cemetery in San Jacinto Co, TX is in the area of the Turners.

2. Based on censuses, Duncan and Dewitt had a daughter named Pearl born around 1906.

Before I say this Pearl is the same as Mary Pearl Milner, I'd like more evidence. Does anyone know for sure?

Dan Franklin
Elaine, our Milner family is also from Blackrod... Do you have any connection with Elizabeth Milner born 1838, daughter of Edward and Alice Milner of Pool Green Blackrod? Elizabeth had a son David, born 1861. I don't believe that she had a brother David, but there may have been cousins? This family were coal miners who had moved from Swaledale in yorkshire where they had been lead miners. Anne

Hi Marion

Thank you very much for your lovely message.

I believe you may be right about us being cousins. I can give you a précis about my side of the Milner's.

My grandfather was William Richard Milner (b1841 - Bristol).

My great grandfather was George Milner (b1804 - Edencurra)

My 3x great grandfather, I believe was Samuel Milner...this part I have done from a hazy memory, from the details my late mother told me many years ago.

I know my late mother (Gladys Elizabeth Milner) along with her sibling sisters and her mother (my grandmother), used to receive rents from Edencurra.

Do you live in County Cork? I only ask, as I want to find out more about my Irish connections. I know what my mother told me how Milner's came to live at Edencurra, but I have questions like: 'Where did the Milner's originally come from - were they from Yorkshire etc?'; 'How many years or even centuries have Milner's been associated with Edencurra?'.

Here is my personal email address, as I believe it will be better way of communication:

richardapseymilner@hotmail.com

I look forward to hearing from you in due course.

With kind regards

Richard
