Jerry Edward Mintz (1897-1940), Son of John Mintz (b.About 1868-1898/99?) in Kentucky NEED ANY INFO PLEASE!

Here is my dilemma... When I was constructing my tree and I added my great grandfather, Jerry Edward Mintz,I got a leaf saying there was a hint for him. It was in a tree of a RAMontgomery38. All of the facts matched up, DOB, married to my great grandmother, Seleah, etc. but it listed Thomas Pinkney Mintz as his father. I accepted it and kept going.

However upon further research, I discovered Thomas Pinkney couldn't be Jerry E.'s father because Jerry's mother Mattie was listed in a 1900 census as a widowed head of household with Jerry E. age 3 and Mary age 4 or 5. And Thomas was listed as living til 1957. Then when I saw Jerry's death record I realized his father was listed as "John Mintz". Thus began this mystery.

Here's what I know:
My paternal grandmother, Lillie (Mintz) Tonubbee's(1924-2008) father Jerry Edward Mintz (1897-1940, born in Texas) was married to Seleah Pistubbee Mintz (1899-1989). His death record lists John, born in Kentucky, as his father and Mattie Murray as his mother. I originally thought Murray was her maiden name but I'm thinking she remarried and Murray was her second husband's name. John must've passed somewhere between mid 1897-1899.

Here's what I need to know:
-Which John Mintz am I looking for?
-Who are John Mintz's father and mother?
-When did he pass away?

Hopefully there are some Mintzes out there that are kin and can help me out with this as my family doesn't remember much, seeing as Jerry Edward passed when my grandmother was just 13 or 14. Thanks in advance all!

I am looking for information on the parents or other relatives of Abraham (or Abram) Mintz and his wife Bertha (maiden name likely Rosenfield). They lived in Pittsburgh from around 1900 to their deaths in 1932 and 1943 respectively.

I am trying to identify an Asheville, Buncombe County, NC motorcycle police officer or county highway officer who was in service here circa 1922-24 named in records as J.M. or J.O. Mintz. The age of James Oliver Mintz from Cherokee County, western NC is approximately correct and the only initial match in the area for that time.

If you encounter any information on this fellow which indicates that he was in law enforcement or garage/mechanic work, we may be looking at the right man. I hope to have a copy of a group photo of Buncombe motorcycle officers from 1922 in which he is clearly visible in case you have encountered other photos for comparison.

Since his father James H. was born circa 1864 in Georgia and lists his father as born in NC, I would be pretty confident that this was a family on the move west from the Mintz families in eastern NC.

Thank you for your message, Gabriella. My father was Emanuel Herzberg born in Riga in 1898. I believe his uncle or other relation, on his mother's side, was Professor V Mintz, the surgeon who operated on Lenin in St Petersberg in 1919, when Lenin was shot in the neck and chest. Professor Mintz went to to work in a hospital in the Riga ghetto and evenually died in Buchenwald in 1944. I don't know if he had any children. Does this ring any bells with you and your family?
With regards,
Peter Herbert, London UK

ok, I've got some detail now. I need ciopies of the pages for the families of: (1)Henry ("Harry") Mintz (1882-1941), md. Minta Catherine Tart (1886-1972); (2)Leroy Mintz Sr. (1910-1984), md. Eva Catherine Chadwick (1912-1971). Also, pages for the parents of Henry Mintz (1774-1863), md. Nancy Ann Peoples sEllars (1782-1863). I appreciate this very much, as this book is very difficult to access; if any of this is too much (as I don't know how much it will be), you don't need to send it, but I will certainly appreciate whatever you can share. Thanks, Ted Brooke in Cumming, GA.

My Mintz line migrated with Charles H. Mintz to Calhoun, Alabama: today, many still reside there in Anniston and Heflin. There is a road named "Jake Mintz Road" after Charles H. Mintz's son.

His g.granddaughter Nannie Lou (b. 1930 d. 2007) married an Army Officer and moved the family north where I grew up in Maryland. Today, much of the family is still in Maryland and in neighboring Delaware.

His father was Charles Francis, son of James Marcus Mintz, son of Charles Hartford, who was a son of John B. It seems that these North Carolina Mintz's moved to South Carolina and then into Alabama. There are a lot of them in Calhoun and Talladega County Alabama where I grew up.

Hello, My name is Tammy and Im hoping you can help me..Mary janes father Robert Washington Mintz,Mints was married in 1857 in Pensacola Florida to a E C Williams b 1834(Elizabeth C Davenport Williams). R W Mints was struck by lightning 10 aug 1858 and killed.
This is where it gets fuzzy and I cant find the answers. Elizabeth Mints is shown on 1860 census for Escambi co Florida living with RW Mints' children Sarah, Mary, Francis Mints and James and John Williams from previous marriage. She then shows up again on 1870 census for Butler Alabama and has a John(I believe this name should be Francis Claude, who is on 1880 census with same age, think she just got confused). Anyways on 1880 census from Butler co Al she list two children, Francis Claude(my ggreat grandfather)
and Thomas. 1860-1920 census list her as a widow..
Heres what Im tring to figure out..If RW died in 1858 and if Elizabeth never remarried where did Francis Claude b1868 Al and Thomas b 1870 Al, come from??? Is it possible they are children of RWs children??Do you know of any children that lost their parents and could have been placed with Elizabeth to raise??Or can you tell me what became of the other Mints children so i can track them to see if theses boys belong to them??
Im pulling my hair out tring to find the answers to this mystery. Any input will be much appreciated.
Thank You
Tammy

I am a Mintz from Alabama. I grew up in Calhoun County, Alabama. My father was Audrey Mintz. His father was James Marcus (Mark) Mintz. Mark's father was Charles Hartford Mintz (Doc). Charles Hartford's father was John B. Most of the descendants of these men are still in the area. I am having problems finding the parents of Mary Mollie Howard Mintz, wife of James Marcus. She was my great grandmother. She died long before I was born, so I never knew her. I am currently living near Athens, GA, but I am planning to go to Talladega, AL to vist the graves of those relatives buried in Blue Eye, Cane Creek, and Edgemont cemeteries in Calhoun County. If I can answer any of your questions about these relatives I will try. I am old enough to have known some of my grandfather's brothers and sisters and the of some of the children of Charles Hartford.

Mark:

I work for ancestry and so I pulled up your tree easily because it is public.

Your ancestor is Alfred Burroughs MINTZ- who is the brother to my John B. Mintz. Both of these men are children of William MINTZ Sr and his wife Susannah. William is believed to be the son of Bernhard Michael MANZ.

You are my 6th Cousin.

A fact that should not be overlooked: There is NO evidence to prove that any MINTZ families other than those of William MINTZ SR lived in Western NC or Western SC Prior to 1830. There is no record of any other Mintz, and so this suggests that the MINTZ that all reside here are related. THere are no lands, no wills, no tax records that would indicate any other family line.

So by 1830 the only MINTZ families residing here were all related. The MINTZ who lived here the generation prior would have to be William's parents: and these would be Bernhard and Anna MANZ.

email me at JBrownGenealogy.com and I will reply with some information I have.

Best Regards,

Jaclynne Brown

Jaclyn, I must admit that I'm not sure how to send you my tree. In fact, I would probably need to send you two of them as I have one that I have worked backward from my immediate family as far as I could go. Then I received a large pdf file of the Manz family going back to the mid 1600's (that I'll be happy to share with you - I think that it's probably your family) that I worked forward as far as I could to the William/Wilhelm Mintz issue we're discussing.
How can I give you the link to my tree in ancestry.com?
Mark

The Jack Mintz in your request doesn't appear to be the same Jack Mintz who is a descendant of the Mintz (formerly Manz) family who immigrated to the US through Charlestown (Charleston) SC in the mid 1700's. This is a different line of Mintz's from the ones who immigrated via New York and Philadelphia just prior to the Revolutionary War (see Wilhelm Otto Mintz - one of three Mintz brothers that came during this time period; one stayed in Philadelphia, one returned to Germany and one settled in North Carolina). Sorry I can't be of more help to you....
Mark Mintz

I am researching a cousin, Rose Shushke MOED (b. ca. 1881 in or near Bialystok, Russia (present-day Poland). She married Isaac MINTZ (b. 1876 in Russia - d. July 1970 in Brooklyn, NY). They had a son, Jack MINTZ, who married Sara (last name unknown). Rose had a brother, Charles Kalman MOED, who had a grocery store in Manhattan in the 1910's. I live in Los Angeles, so cannot dig in and around New York for family data. Please tell me if this rings a bell.

Mark:

If you notice the locations of these western NC Mintz you will see many of them are very close to the South Carolina State Line: or as it is with my William Mintz SR. His son and my ancestor, John B. Mintz, settled on a plantation and started up a very successful Iron Works by the Broad River: his land was very near to where Bernhard Manz and William Manz lived in SC. This is another clue to me, that when John B. Mintz settled from NC back to SC he chose this area that tells me they are related. This is what we call in genealogy the "preponderance of the evidence" that suggests to us who our relatives are. There is a great deal of research done on the MANZ family: but all of their research follows only those that were born in Germany. The Manz family had two children born after their immigration to the states: William and Stephen. Stephen and Bernard Michael appear both in the Orangeburg 1790 census along with Bernard's nephew Gasper.

I have some Mintz information on my site: www.JBrownGenealogy.com -- however the bulk of my research I've held off to compile for a family book. I've made some screen shots of my pre-published work dealing with the early MANZ family.

Send me your tree and I'll try to see where you fold in. You can contact me privately via my site. And please do, so I can send you the screen shots of some of my research.

Best Regards

Jaclynne

Jaclynne, THANK YOU so much for your posting! This is hugely helpful! I had hit a brick wall right at this point, and therefore went down the two separate trails that you mentioned. Both trails ironically seemed to lead to the same state (NC), and so became even more confusing. There are Mintz's located in the eastern part of NC (descendants of Wilhelm Otto Mintz) and ones that are located in western NC that I've been told are descendants of William Manz whose family came to Charleston South Carolina (and eventually into NC) from southern Germany in the mid 1700's. Now that I have some clarification from what you share below, I can try and piece together which of the two is my lineage (though it looks as if you and I are probably distantly related).
I would be very interested in seeing some more of your research, if you don't mind sharing pieces of it. One of the things I am looking for is that there is apparently a Jewish bloodline in the family some where.
In any case, thanks so much again for sharing!
Mark Mintz
If you are a MINTZ in Alabama: the spelling of your name to MINCE was most likely a phonetical error.

I have a LOT of information on the Alabama MINTZ'- the original family name was MANZ from Germany: which has been verified in the German Parish Record.

Please email me:
JBrownGenealogy@verizon.net and we can compare our family trees.

I have done exhaustive research on the Mintz Line during the Colonial, Revolutionary, and Antebellum periods of America: And there are TWO William Mintz' during the Revolution.

One is the famous Hessian turned Whig Wilhelm Otto Mentz who changed his name to William Mintz to be less German- Wilhelm was born in Prussia and married Lucretia: the other is William Manz: son of Bernard Michael Manz. Bernard immigrated in 1752 with his brother Johann Casper and two sisters and they all settled along the Saluda. This William was born 1755 in South Carolina. He married Susannah.

During the Revolution the two families both changed their name to Mintz: albeit various spellings over the years the names are the same because in these times your surname was written phonetically. Therefore the same surname can have multiple spellings but be of the same family.

Wilhelm Otto Mentz changed his name to William Mintz: and the MANZ family followed suit. Bernhard Michael began going by Michael: his brother by Casper Mintz as we see on the 1790 SC Census. The immigrant children who were older also began going by Mintz.

To differentiate the two it is best to remember that William MANZ is William Mintz, SR- as he had a son named William Mintz, JR.

The two lines ARE NOT related. Simply the two families adopted the same surname. The MANZ line I have since verified in the German Parish Record.

Children of William and Susannah:

Peter Mintz
Robert Mintz
Sally Mintz
James MINTZ was born 1790 in NC and died 1850 GA
Elizabeth MINTZ was born 1805. We do not know when she died.
Alfred Burroughs MINTZ was born 1805 NC and died 1860 GA
William MINTZ Jr was born 1806 and died 1882
John B. MINTZ was born 1812 NC and died 1892 SC

John B. MINTZ is my ancestor.

Best Regards
Jaclynne Brown
JBrown Genealogy
Ancestry.com Expert Connect

Give me a few days and I will share with you a whole history that was recently given to me about the Mintz family from Germany, part of whom migrated into Georgia and Alabama I believe. If you will provide me with your e-mail address, I will forward a lengthy documentary history of the family. You won't be disappointed, I assure you.
Naturally, you'll want to do a little further research to ensure that what I'm sending you ties into YOUR family.

Mark
I live in Burgaw, a little town just northwest of Wilmington, NC.
In my line I show a Wilhelm Otto Mentz-Arens\Arene born about 1730 in Prussia and died btwn 1786 and 1790 in Brunswick Co., NC He married Lucretia Edwards abt 1769 in Cumberland Co., NC. They had John Mintz, 1770- Henry David Mintz, 1774- James Mintz, 1776- Jonas Mintz, 1778- Frances Marion Mintz, 1780- and a daughter (unnamed) Henry David was my ancestor.
We are having a Mintz fanmily reunion at the Reiglewood (NC) community center on the 18th of July if you want to come and meet some of us. We bring enough lunch for our own families and share it with all the others in a sort of "pot-luck". Come if you will. Let me know if you plan to come to the reunion and I will bring the info that I have. Can I help you anymore?
Call me and I will be glad to give you directions.
Marsha

Marsha,
Thanks for responding to my request. You can reach me at MLMintz@hotmail.com. I would like to share the info that I have with you, too. However, as I think that I may have said in my last post, I have gotten back to my great, great grandfather and hit a brick wall which one family member says takes me to the Mantz family who came to America from Kleinenstingen, Bavaria, Germany in the mid 1700's through South Carolina. However, it seems to make since to me that the Mintz family that is congregated around Wilmington, NC who are descendants of Wilhelm (William) Mintz, one of the three brothers that came to America through NY or Philadelphia prior to the Revolutionary War, would make more sense. So, I'm trying to verify the connection there (if there is one).

I am assuming that you go by Jenn, I am Marsha (Marshalleen) Mintz Williams. I am not sure that we are related but we could be. If you call me I can tell you what I have. I have found that the name Mintz is Jewish, of the priest line. I am very glad of that since it makes me Jewish on both my Mom's and Dad's side. I knew nothing of it until I started searching for our roots. My dad is deceases and my mom has alzheimers. I have 8 living siblings and cousins "up the gum stump" I can't begin to tell you how many, but I'll be to try. My no. 910-616-5296.
Marsha
